The Fallacy Guide: From the Critique of Fallacies to a Collaborative Pedagogical Approach
Nana Ariel
The longstanding tradition of fallacy education in teaching argumentation has faced significant criticism for being outdated, overly simplistic, non-contextual, and adversarial. Critics argue that fallacies are rarely encountered in real-life discourse, traditional fallacy lists are inconsistent, and the method fosters a negative, conflict-oriented mindset. This paper examines these criticisms and introduces a collaborative pedagogical model that refutes some arguments and addresses others. The alternative approach to fallacies is demonstrated by an argumentation course design at Tel Aviv University, which offers a dynamic and collaborative approach to fallacy education. The course involves three collaborative components: group analysis through collaborative reasoning, the creation of an online fallacy guide built from independently traced examples and peer feedback, and community engagement, making the course a Public Humanities project. These elements address criticisms by situating fallacies within real-life contexts, fostering critical dialogue, and promoting public participation. This applicable pedagogical model demonstrates that teaching fallacies can be effective in enhancing critical and democratic thinking in higher education, particularly amid the present-day wave of global populism. It also challenges the notion raised by opponents that the joy in learning fallacies is a superficial distraction from rigorous intellectual work.

Primo Levi and the Terrestrial Condition
Emiliano Guaraldo
In his stories, Primo Levi presents contrasting planetary visions of Earth: one depicting it as an expanding technosphere made of entangled beings, and the other as a world of disparities impacted by the agency of a mutated humanity. But Levi's ideas of planet do not solely advocate for a utopian cosmopolitanism of all living beings; he critically probes the tension between technology's promises in industrialized societies and the worldview that sees Earth merely as an exploitable resource. Moreover, his stories emphasize the divisions and the contradictions created by the planetarization of the logic of industrial modernity. This essay analyzes selected short stories from Vizio di forma, seeking to unpack Levi's intricate engagements with planetary concepts and the emergent idea of a terrestrial condition. Central to this exploration is how Levi's planetary vision reflects the inherent tensions between the individual and the collective, and between different scales and ways of existing.

Amina Houara
The aim of this article is to study the representations of simple folk’s speech (peasants), in a humorous novel: Noël Du Fail’s Propos rustiques, published in 1547. I shall examine the political implications of the creation of a homogeneous rustic language in the text, and therefore wonder to what extent does Du Fail create a paradoxical “collective idiolect” in order to promote an ideal sociological harmony in the Early Modern France society.

Making Space for What Lies in the Interstices: The Composing Practices of Single Moms
Alex Hanson
This article focuses on the composition practices of three single moms across academic ranks and single mom identities in order to expand our understanding in Composition and Rhetoric of how composing processes are influenced by lived experience and material circumstances. Drawing on composition process research, I argue for the need to give greater attention to the individual composing practices of those with marginalized identities in order to strengthen our work in Comp/Rhet as teachers, mentors, and colleagues. Written in a style that combines testimonios and analysis, this article pushes and expands our understanding of what counts as composition practice, why composition practice does not happen, and how composition practices in and out of the classroom can be valuable resources.

Re-emerging Relevance: Did we just re-live the apocalyptic novel World War Z?
Lisa Beckelhimer
An Oral History of the Zombie War, the book follows the pattern of Studs Terkel's The Good War: An Oral History of World War Two2 by reporting documentary-style on a global zombie pandemic through a series of first-person interviews with survivors. "3 Students assigned to read the novel for English composition and rhetoric class have sometimes questioned World War Z's sense of realism, arguing that while the style of writing draws comparisons to nonfiction, the outrageous events are uber-fictional. [...]isn't the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as 'the living dead'?"5 As I re-read World War Z during the Covid-19 pandemic, I considered how key scenes and characters mirrored the current and real threats to Max Brooks' notion of the "human factor," not only in a literal and physical sense through the virus, but also by diminishing our abilities to care for our most vulnerable and to interact civilly with those who hold perspectives other than our own. "12 In October 2020, the American Hospital Association called the accusations "malicious, outrageous, and completely misguided," and both they and the CDC issued lengthy explanations of how underlying medical conditions and deaths due to Covid-19 are reported.13 Early in the pandemic, Brooks was treated by media as something of an expert on apocalypse;while researching for World War Z, he had studied diseases such as the Black Death and influenza, toured the CDC, and examined disaster preparedness plans. "19 It's worth noting that quisling is a real term, meaning a traitor or one who collaborates with an enemy and named for Norwegian war-time leader Vidkun Quisling, who collaborated with Adolph Hitler.20 America 2020 exhibited many examples of this zombification of citizens' thinking: followers or supporters of a particular candidate or philosophy were called "sheep," for example, which became a social media insult complete with an animal emoji meant to inflict further offense.
Emotion in the Rhetorical Arts and Literary Culture c.1070–c.1400
Rita Copeland
Chapter 3 explores how style itself became an explosive field in the professional rhetorics of the eleventh through thirteenth centuries, the ars dictaminis and the ars poetriae. These new pragmatics of rhetorical theory trace their roots back to the epideictic teaching of late antiquity, where the whole range of emotions is a property of style. The arts of poetry and of letter-writing have proved extremely resistant to modern theoretical probing of their affective and aesthetic principles, because they stress the technical dimension of composition. But they also see rhetoric as a performance-oriented enterprise, and for them the obvious resource for generating strong emotion lies in style. This apotheosis of style is the most durable medieval tradition of teaching how to respond affectively to texts and to write affectively oneself. It manifests itself with joyful zeal in all quarters, from lowly classroom poetry and exemplary anthologies to Petrarch’s commanding high style and Chaucer’s parodies of emotive style.

Figure in movimento: José Saramago e il personaggio come rifigurazione
Carlos Reis

The union concluded at the Sejm meeting held in Lublin in 1569 established common institutions of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, thus creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which survived until 1795. Apart from the ruler elected jointly by the nobility of both countries, it established the common Sejm, foreign and defence policies, and the common coin. The army, treasury, legal systems, administration, and judiciary remained separate. From the philological point of view, the following markers are substantial for characterising the Union of Lublin act: the Polish language of the text and its stylistic affi nity, diversity of the forms of the names of the document signatories, text composition and its offi cial and rhetoric style markers determining its informative and persuasive functions.
In this work it has been analized the participation of figures or techniques of amplification described by Geoffrey of Vinsauf, norman poet from 13th century, into the classical rhetoric dimensions known as dispositio (structure) and elocutio (style), so that I can exemplify how in film industry it can be witnessed its use in form of image design through cinematography, visual composition and scenic assembly. From this study, it is also possible to notice how screenwriters and directors have been able to offer moral or emotional meaning to the viewer.

From Theatrical to Scientific Reviewing: The Case of Nikolay Blatov (1875–1942)
I. Lvova, D. Lvova
ABSTRACT This paper provides insight into the life of Nikolay Blatov, a Russian professor of accounting who was active in the early 20th century. However, this is not a biographical study in the usual sense. It attempts to apply contextual analysis to one of the aspects of Blatov's career, i.e., writing reviews for the educational literature. The paper shows that Blatov's individual style as a reviewer was determined by his cultural environment: his education and his passion for theater journalism in his young years. The study compares the figures of speech that Blatov employed in his theatrical reviews with those in his later scientific reviews. His rhetoric and style as a theater reviewer enriched his scientific reviewing. The paper also considers Blatov's contribution to developing the rules that governed the narrative of textbooks. He influenced their composition, references, style, and the boundaries within which a textbook's language would remain literary.
