A Novel Approach to Quantitative Characterization and Visualization of Color Fading
Woo Sik Yoo, Kitaek Kang, Jung Gon Kim
et al.
Color fading naturally occurs with time under light illumination. It is triggered by the high photon energy of light. The rate of color fading and darkening depends on the substance, lighting condition, and storage conditions. Color fading is only observed after some time has passed. The current color of objects of interest can only be compared with old photographs or the observer’s perception at the time of reference. Color fading and color darkening rates between two or more points in time in the past can only be determined using photographic images from the past. For objective characterization of color difference between two or more different times, quantification of color in either digital or printed photographs is required. A newly developed image analysis and comparison software (PicMan) has been used for color quantification and pixel-by-pixel color difference mapping in this study. Images of two copies of Japanese wood-block prints with and without color fading have been selected for the exemplary study of quantitative characterization of color fading and color darkening. The fading occurred during a long period of exposure to light. Pixel-by-pixel, line-by-line, and area-by-area comparisons of color fading and darkening between two images were very effective in quantifying color change and visualization of the phenomena. RGB, HSV, CIE L*a*b* values between images and their differences of a single pixel to areas of interest in any shape can be quantified. Color fading and darkening analysis results were presented in numerical, graphical, and image formats for completeness. All formats have their own advantages and disadvantages over the other formats in terms of data size, complexity, readability, and communication among parties of interest. This paper demonstrates various display options for color analysis, a summary of color fading, or color difference among images of interest for practical artistic, cultural heritage conservation, and museum applications. Color simulation for various moments in time was proposed and demonstrated by interpolation or extrapolation of color change between images, with and without color fading, using PicMan. The degree of color fading and color darkening over the various moments in time (past and future) can be simulated and visualized for decision-making in public display, storage, and restoration planning.
Esgrafiados barrocos en la Barcelona medieval
C. Thió i Lluch

Restoration of Peru Pavilion (Seville, 1927): selection and analysis of water-repellent treatment
Vicente Flores Alés, Francisco Javier Alejandre Sánchez, Juan Jesús Martín del Rio
et al.
The Peru Pavilion was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 in Seville. In 2017 the building presented significant alterations, mainly consisting of large quantities of dirt, many cracks and the detachment of fragments affecting the ornamental concrete and mortar elements on its façades. This was the reason why it was necessary to develop a restoration project and the subsequent intervention on the façades. This research was based on a preliminary study phase in which the main causes of alterations in the building were identified, to evaluate the most appropriate preventive treatments for its conservation. The second phase focused specifically on controlling restoration work, mainly to verify the efficacy and suitability of the treatment applied through onsite tests and instrumental analysis techniques in the laboratory.

The challenge of preserving contemporary architecture. Experiences at the MAXXI museum in Rome
Antonella Versaci, Alessio Cardaci
The fate of contemporary concrete buildings has become a growing concern because of their rapid ageing. The procedures to be implemented for their material and structural preservation require a multidisciplinary approach since they are often the result of pioneering experiments and unique challenges, both morphological and technical-constructive. However, intervention procedures have to be based on a wealth of knowledge and on operational and theoretical principles, which unfortunately do not apply to the restoration of reinforced concrete. This article focuses on the experience of conservation of the MAXXI, the National Museum of the Arts of the XXI century, made by Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) in Rome, which prematurely encountered conservation problems, and on the complex maintenance work that the museum was recently subjected to.

Virtual acoustics applied to the restoration of architectural heritage: the Cathedral of Valencia
Elena Díaz Rubio, Alicia Giménez Pérez
The Cathedral of Valencia (Spain) is the result of multiple interventions carried out throughout its history. In order to recover the appearance that it had centuries ago, a partial repristination has been made generating a new spatial configuration and variations in the coatings that influence the acoustics of the room. Religious buildings have a characteristic sound that must be the object of special protection, so it is important to determine the variations that, in terms of acoustic quality, may have occurred. To do this, through acoustic simulations, a comparative study of the acoustic behavior before and after the repristination has been performed. This methodology opens the possibility to predict the acoustic result of any intervention before its implementation. With this, architectural acoustics is proposed as a new tool to deal with the restoration of heritage.

Structural consolidation in restoration. The vaults of Palladio’s villa Poiana
Francesco Doglioni
The structural consolidation work on Villa Poiana, a unique work by Palladio designed and built using solely vaults without resorting to lineal structures, has given rise to an extraordinary interpretation of the evolution of the structural decay of the building over time. It is also a model intervention given its ability to adapt to this progressive history of lesions and deformation, designing added reinforcement based on the historic structure and its progressive reinforcements. The analysis of the damage that can be caused by interventions with reinforced concrete on historic structures is equally interesting due, among other reasons, to the great weight added to the structure.

From restoration to conservation; from aesthetics to ethics.
Amedeo Bellini
This text makes a case for monument conservation culture as an ethical attitude that, contrary to what one might think, refuses to be a prisoner of the past but rather looks to the future. The author criticises the historicism involved in the concept of restoration and cries out for conservation, which rejects hierarchies of historic values based on concise interpretations of historiography and claims the solid potential value of architectonic testimony.

The Via Traiana
Luigi Salierno
Our historic heritage also includes within its meaning all that has to do with a large geographic extension, articulated by common characteristics, by a cultural substrate or by a historic route. This is the case of the Via Traiana in the south of Italy, which has been an object of study for its historic and cultural recuperation, and has managed to gather the efforts of different institutions and link the landmarks of the Roman road in a project of great structural coherence for the territory.
