The Recessed Arched Mihrab Design: An Identity Marker in the Formation of Art in the Zand Era

samaneh kakavand

Each King in their respective reigns attempted to shape visual culture according to their intellectual and ideological foundations. In some periods, these changes were explicit and evident, while in others, they were implicit and gradual. The Zand era also possesses distinctive artistic characteristics, including a particular type of Mihrab design. In other words, one of the identifying components of Zand-era visual culture is a type of "Mihrab" design. The Zand Mihrab design exhibits unique visual elements that serve as an iconic representation of the visual culture of that period, along with other visual components, forming the artistic characteristics of the era. The art of the Zand era is full of innovative designs, among which the repetition of a type of frame similar to the types of altars is thought-provoking. Introducing the mentioned frame as an identity identifier and searching for its frequency and how it is manifested in the Zand heritage is the concern of this article. The design of a mihrab with a corrugation, which is often seen in the art of the Zand, is a combination of two crescent and pointed arches, which has brought the upper part, especially the crown of the arch, to the fore in a new form. The mentioned design is an innovative frame in the Zend era and has a hybrid form that is inspired by two crescent and pointed arches in the crown part. The discovery of such distinctive markers necessitates research in this field, as the lack of attention to the study framework may result in misattributing artworks to the Zand era or the early years of the Qajar period without proper identification. The adoption of Mihrab designs imprinted on dateless artifacts and handicrafts of the Zand era will serve as an identity marker of that period. While motifs inspired by arches and muqarnas are prominent in Islamic art, the present study argues that the "Mihrab" design discussed here, is a distinguished visual characteristic of Zand-era art.Research Objective: The primary objective is to introduce, classify, and study the form of the "Mihrab" frame in Zand-era artworks to define one of its visual elements and cultural markers. The secondary objective is to establish the "Zand Mihrab" as an identity marker.Research Questions: How can the unique work of the "Zand Frame" be explained as an identity marker in artworks from the second half of the 12th century and the first half of the 13th century AH? How is the identity marker of the "Zand motif" interpreted in terms of innovation in the design of the Mihrab? In terms of the hypothesis it is assumed that the "Mihrab" design is an identity marker of the art in the Zand era.Research Methodology: This research is primarily theoretical, as it aims to explore the visual phenomenon known as the "Zand Mihrab" design and to elucidate its characteristics and qualities. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing library research, document analysis, virtual observations, and field visits to collect information and concepts. Data was gathered through written texts and images, focusing on 19 samples of visual arts from the Zand period, including tiles of Vakil mosque, the pavilion, the Haft-Tanan mansion, as well as objects and artifacts such as carpets, tombstones, a wooden door located in the Qazvin Museum, and a fabric piece containing a "Mihrab" frame. Results: The quantitative findings of this research indicate a prevalence of the "Mihrab" design in the Vakil mosque compared to other architectural structures and artistic works of the mentioned period. The study of the chronological evolution of the "Zand Mihrab" design demonstrates its invention and flourishing in the second half of the 12th century AH and persisted during the first half of the 13th century AH.Another significant finding of this research is that, although the studied design carries spiritual meanings, it has been transformed in usage during the Zand period and manifested in non-religious architectural structures and artifacts. The "Mihrab" design is found in works such as the Vakil mosque (religious), the pavilion, and the Abdul Razzaq Khan mansion (palace), as well as in Vakil School (educational) and the decoration of objects and tombstones. The Zand-era artists, through innovation in the design and modern visual composition of the Mihrab arch by iterating and harmonizing the application of the motif, and ultimately the utilization of the principle of diversity, transformed the "Mihrab" design into an identity element of the Zand period. Thus, in addition to its original invention, the repetition and diverse application of this form in various arts and architectures have turned the spiritual figure of Mihrab design into a symbol of Zand's identity and an integral part of the visual culture.

Mental well-being of college students: focus on sex differences and psycho physiological indices

Yang Zhu, Wen-Ming Liang, Kai Jiang et al.

Abstract Background Questionnaires that assess psychological functioning are 21 limited by their subjective nature, while HRV can serve as a more objective 22 (but also complex) index of such functioning. This study aims to validate sex 23 differences in college students' mental well-being using psychological scales 24 and HRV, and to investigate the correlation between psychological scales 25 and HRV for each sex. Method 240 college students (120 males and 120 females, aged 18-22 27 years) were recruited via cluster sampling from 1st Sept. to 1st Nov. 2023 at 28 Zhejiang University in China. Mental well-being was assessed using the 29 Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) and the 21-item 30 version of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), while HRV 31 was measured at rest using a Polar H7 heart rate monitor. Results Comparative analyses showed that female students had higher 33 anxiety scores (DASS-21) (p = 0.033, Partial η² = 0.019) and lower mental 34 well-being scores (WEMWBS) (p = 0.047, Partial η² = 0.016) compared to 35 male students. Additionally, female students exhibited lower HRV across 36 multiple indices, including SDNN (p < 0.001, Partial η² = 0.158), RMSSD (p 37 < 0.001, Partial η² = 0.064), pNN50 (p < 0.001, Partial η² = 0.045), and 38 absolute high-frequency (HF) power (p = 0.003, Partial η² = 0.038). 39 Correlational analyses further revealed that only female students' anxiety 40 scores were negatively associated with RMSSD (r = -0.245, p = 0.008), 41 absolute HF power (r = -0.261, p = 0.005), and normalized HF power (r = - 42 0.262, p = 0.005). Conclusions Female university students exhibited poorer mental well-being 44 than male students, as indicated by both subjective and objective measures, with anxiety being particularly prominent. Combining psychological scales 46 with measures of HRV (RMSSD and HF power) may improve anxiety 47 assessment in female university students.

Long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatment: experiences of people with HIV and their healthcare providers in Uganda

Henry Zakumumpa, Adolf Alinaitwe, Marjorie Kyomuhendo et al.

Abstract Introduction Long-acting injectable antiretroviral treatment (LAI-ART) has emerged as a novel alternative to the burden of daily oral pills. The bi-monthly intramuscular injectable containing cabotegravir and rilpivirine holds the promise of improving adherence to ART. The perspectives of potential users of LAI-ART, the majority of whom reside in Eastern and Southern Africa, are still largely unexplored. We set out to understand the experiences of people with HIV (PWH) who received LAI-ART at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital in mid-Western Uganda for at least 12 months. Methods This qualitative study, conducted between July and August 2023, was nested within a larger study. We conducted four focus groups with 32 (out of 69) PWH who received intramuscular injections of cabotegravir and rilpivirine. In-depth interviews were held with six health workers who delivered LAI-ART to PWH. Data were analyzed by thematic approach broadly modeled on the five domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Results There was high acceptability of LAI-ART (30 /32 or 94%) participants requested to remain on LAI-ART even after the end of the 12-month trial. Adherence to ART was reportedly improved when compared to daily oral treatment. Participants credited LAI-ART with; superior viral load suppression, redemption from the daily psychological reminder of living with HIV, enhanced privacy in HIV care and treatment, reduced HIV-related stigma associated with taking oral pills and that it absolved them from carrying bulky medication packages. Conversely, nine participants reported pain around the injection site and a transient fever soon after administering the injection as side effects of LAI-ART. Missed appointments for receiving the bi-monthly injection were common. Providers identified health system barriers to the prospective scale-up of LAI-ART which include the perceived high cost of LAI-ART, stringent cold chain requirements, physical space limitations, and workforce skills gaps in LAI-ART delivery as potential drawbacks. Conclusion Overall, PWH strongly preferred LAI-ART and expressed a comparatively higher satisfaction with this treatment alternative. Health system barriers to potential scale-up are essential to consider if a broader population of PWH will benefit from this novel HIV treatment option in Uganda and other resource-limited settings. Design and implementation of isolated multilevel inverter with lower number of circuit devices

Ahmed Abbas, Marif Daula Siddique, Shirazul Islam et al.

Abstract Galvanic isolation is an integral part for the grid connected solar PV system. With the advancement of multilevel inverters for the grid‐connected application, the multilevel inverters having isolation are not sufficiently discussed in the literature. Here, a 15‐level isolated multilevel inverter topology requiring only 13 switches is proposed. The proposed single‐phase isolated converter requires reduced switches to generate 15‐level ac output voltage with voltage gain of 7. Comparatively, the switches connected in the proposed converter undergo less voltage stress as compared to the MLIs reported in the literature. A comparison of the proposed converter structure to the state‐of‐the art MLIs described in the literature is included. The experimental results captured on a low‐power laboratory prototype are used to validate the performance of the proposed converter. The claimed efficiency of the converter calculated using simulation results is found to be 97.1%. However, the efficiency calculated using experimental results is 95.2% at 700 W.

Development of Non-destructive Testing Method for Tube Inspection in Fin-Fan Coolers in Kazakhstan’s Oil/Gas, Chemical and Power Industries.

John P. Hansen, J V Hansen, Jonathan Hansen et al.

Many oil/gas fields in Kazakhstan contain high levels of highly corrosive H2S and CO2, sometimes at very high pressures. The management of corrosion is essential in maintaining plant safety and integrity of the processing facility. This paper describes the development of a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that improves the reliability of air-cooled heat exchangers by reducing down-time related to corrosive and erosive failure of fin-fan tubes. The project goal was to maximize the output of oil and gas plants and refineries while reducing the plant operating cost. The work first identified those NDT requirements for air-cooled heat exchangers damage assessment that would provide the greatest economic benefit for Kazakhstan industry. The main objective was to develop a state-of-an-art NDT method for air-cooled heat exchanger tubes, capable to: a) detect any damage mechanism while testing from tube internal diameter, b) accurately determine the damage in terms of wall loss, c) perform inspection quickly and expediently, d) requires minimum tube cleaning. Consequently, the method specially adapted for Kazakhstan conditions was developed based on a combination of Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) technique for flaw detection and with Hall effect measurement of wall thickness and gradual corrosion in tubes. The method has been tested in both laboratory and field conditions and the results were compared with accurate but slow ultrasonic IRIS method. High correlation was obtained, which proved that the developed technology is capable to deliver similar results at the speed almost 10 times faster and less than half the cost.

Spatio-temporal characteristics of hazardous weather affecting Chinese airports based on the ERA5/ERA5-land reanalysis dataset

Ting Lei, Chenxi Jin, Chen Qi

The growing demand for air transportation has led to increased air traffic and airline operations at airports worldwide, while hazardous weather conditions have a considerable impact on the efficiency and safety of air traffic. The long-term and high-resolution state-of-art fifth-generation reanalysis of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) (ERA5) and ERA5-land provide us a perspective on the climatological characteristics of hazardous weather conditions affecting Chinese airports. These hazardous weather conditions include low-level wind shear (LLWS), limited visibility (LIMV), thunderstorms (TSTMs), and snowfall (SNOW). The LLWS is frequent in winter but rare in summer. At the airports in the north of eastern China, managers should take more precautions about LLWS from February to March and October to November. LIMV is major hazardous weather in the south of eastern China that should be carefully monitored in winter, especially from December to January. In northwestern China, LIMV is rare, especially at Yinchuan and Lanzhou airports. TSTMs frequently occur in South China and Southwest China, especially in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and eastern Tibet. The corresponding active period is summer. SNOW frequently occurs over the Tibet Plateau and parts of Xinjiang province. SNOW is generally active in early winter (December–January) at Urumchi airport but at Lhasa airport in late winter (February–March). There is no SNOW throughout the year in the south of eastern China. The observations also verify such characteristics of the annual cycles of the four hazardous weather conditions. The trend analysis does not express many warnings on hazardous weather conditions except the SNOW. The SNOW at Lhasa airport shows an increasing trend. Considering the frequent SNOW in Lhasa, more attention should be put to monitoring this weather here.

The Last Dagestan European: Nostalgic Myth in Prose and Painting by Khalilbek Musayasul

Kazbek Kamilovich Sultanov

The article traces the milestones of the creative biography of the novelist, painter, graphic artist Khalilbek Musayasul, who left Dagestan in the twenties of the twentieth century. His book “The Land of the Last Knights” appeared in German in 1936, and reached his father’s house with a delay of sixty-three years. For the first time in Dagestan culture, the idea of artistic synthesis, which presupposes an organic combination of verbal and visual, declared itself. The three watercolors and twenty-six graphic drawings placed in the text created a special atmosphere of mutual pollination of the word and the brush, when the descriptiveness was translated into the language of the visual image and vice versa. An attempt is made to analyze the value-semantic complementarity of ethno-cultural identity and sensitivity to transcultural innovations, identity and cultural universals. Two notable novels in the twenties of the last century - “Table Mountain” by Y. Slezkin and “Smile of Dionysus” by K. Gamsakhurdia - depict a young Khalilbek, already a “European”, as stated in the first of them. The East and the West came together in his personality and creativity in the sense that Europeanism declared itself not in the loss of dissimilarity, but in the inclusion in the dialogue of supra-ethnic artistic ideas. Meditative autobiographical prose has absorbed not only ethno-uniqueness, but also worldview breadth: the mutual attraction of the hearth-house and the image of the world initiated the “elevation of the small”, which does not lose sight of “the whole”, because “he needs the whole, the whole world... ” - let us refer to the lecture “The Art of the Novel” by T. Mann, a contemporary and interlocutor of Khalilbek (in the photo of 1927 He sits in a Circassian between T. Mann and F. Rubo). At the same time, the confession story, describing rituals, customs, rituals, is focused on the resilience of tradition as a counteraction to the erosion of the cultural and genetic code. The cosmos of national life opens up in its primordial ambiguity, combining the psychomental warehouse and features of mountain etiquette with finely stylized mythological plots, with an unobtrusive resurrection of archetypes and ancient customs of clearly pre-Islamic origin. The spiritual founder of the “Land of the Last Knights” was in no hurry to write off the precepts of ancestors and traditional values according to the department of archival memory, continuing to find in them the core of a positive identity.

CMSRAS: A Novel Chaotic Multi-Specular Reflection Optimization Algorithm Considering Shared Nodes

Bing Ma, Pengmin Lu, Lufan Zhang et al.

Specular reflection algorithm (SRA) was a single population meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the physical function of mirror. However, similar to most of meta-heuristic algorithms, it had the disadvantages of weak population diversity, stagnation in local optimal and low convergence rate. In order to overcome these shortcomings, a chaotic multi-specular reflection optimization algorithm considering shared nodes (CMSRAS) was proposed by the combination of population strategy with shared node, improved Tent chaos strategy and Gaussian mutation strategy. Initially, a single population SRA was extended to the multi-population with shared node and the population was initialized by improved Tent chaos sequence to improve the quality of the initial solution and the population diversity, and to enhance the global search ability. Meanwhile, to strengthen the local search ability and the convergence accuracy, the Gaussian mutation and improved Tent chaotic disturbance strategy were introduced into SRA. And then the influence law and sensitivity analysis of the CMSRAS algorithm between the initial setting parameters were obtained based on the response surface method and the Sobol&#x2019;s method. Finally, compared with both 12 state-of-the-art algorithms and 8 well-known advanced algorithms, the performance of CMSRAS was evaluated on a comprehensive set of 32 benchmark problems. In addition, CMSRAS was applied to solve the complex optimization problems of engineering structure. The results demonstrated that proposed CMSRAS algorithm outperformed most competitive algorithms and efficiently solve the real-life global optimization problems.

Prolyl Hydroxylase Paralogs in Nicotiana benthamiana Show High Similarity With Regard to Substrate Specificity

Réka Mócsai, Kathrin Göritzer, David Stenitzer et al.

Plant glycoproteins display a characteristic type of O-glycosylation where short arabinans or larger arabinogalactans are linked to hydroxyproline. The conversion of proline to 4-hydroxyproline is accomplished by prolyl-hydroxylases (P4Hs). Eleven putative Nicotiana benthamiana P4Hs, which fall in four homology groups, have been identified by homology searches using known Arabidopsis thaliana P4H sequences. One member of each of these groups has been expressed in insect cells using the baculovirus expression system and applied to synthetic peptides representing the O-glycosylated region of erythropoietin (EPO), IgA1, Art v 1 and the Arabidopsis thaliana glycoprotein STRUBBELIG. Unlike the situation in the moss Physcomitrella patens, where one particular P4H was mainly responsible for the oxidation of erythropoietin, the tobacco P4Hs exhibited rather similar activities, albeit with biased substrate preferences and preferred sites of oxidation. From a biotechnological viewpoint, this result means that silencing/knockout of a single P4H in N. benthamiana cannot be expected to result in the abolishment of the plant-specific oxidation of prolyl residues in a recombinant protein.

“Deep Listening” in Buddhist Studies: Teaching and Learning during a Pandemic

Frances Garrett, Sophie Chase

Co-authored between a professor and student, this essay discusses how an experiential learning assignment of “deep listening” was integrated into an online course on histories of Buddhist meditation. Paired with a group art project, the work provided not only an opportunity to practice critical communication skills, but also a sense of connection and community, which is especially important during the conditions of pandemic isolation. The course design relied on pedagogical principles specifically aimed at supporting student well-being, such as trauma-informed teaching. We reflect on how grounding course design in inclusive, anti-oppressive and care-focused principles may enable new outcomes in teaching and learning beyond this pandemic year.

Chen Zegang

At present, the sports dance has entered every stage of the people’s life, has become the public’s favorite sport. Sports dance has been well developed. This article mainly uses the literature material law to carry on the detailed analysis to the sports dance constitution, elaborated in detail the sports dance artistic expression. The composition of sports dance elements; sports dance is a form of dance art show; sports dance through the dance art can be divided into three aspects, namely, form, music, shape of the expressive force. In this paper, the study will be more in-depth excavation of the cultural connotation of sports dance, and promote the development of sports dance can be more comprehensive. In 20s of last century, Chinese Sports Dance Association officially joined the International Sports Dance Association, which also makes our country’s sports dance and international exchange more frequent. However, due to China’s sports dance sports dance learning time is not long, while learning is influenced by Chinese traditional culture, the sports dance movements are too conservative, there is a very large gap and international enthusiasm, bold and unrestrained, the pursuit of individual sports dance in the dance style, music and performance hand. Sports dance originated from abroad, it is produced in the daily life of people in foreign countries. China’s domestic sports dance players in learning dance at the same time, the production and the connotation of dance is not very understanding, therefore, it is difficult to better reflect the emotional expression of sports dance. Although the sports dance is a kind of similar to the competitive projects, but it is also a kind of dance culture, and to constitute a force from the dance art show a detailed study, detailed mining playing officer of sports dance performance further, reducing China’s sports dance and international sports dance gap.

Research of leaching of disseminated copper-nickel ores in their interaction with mine waters

Svetlov A. V., Makarov D. V., Potapov S. S. et al.

A great amount of mine waste creates serious problems for economy and ecology in mining regions. Keeping of dumps and tailings storages requires huge capital costs and material inputs. Removal of overburden volumes cause ecological disequilibrium, ingress of chemical agents and heavy metals in ground and surface water have an adverse influence on eco-systems and human health. These hazards are particularly high under extreme climatic conditions, when mines create vast desert lands around themselves. Foreign researchers use the terms "acid mine drainage" (AМD) and "acid rock drainage" (ARD) when speaking on mine water oxidation and contamination of the environment with heavy metals. AMD is induced by underground mine drainage, natural sulfide-bearing rock exposures, etc. The processes occurring in the interaction the mine water with fine dust particles, as well as water filtering through the thick sulfide rocks have been studied. It has been shown that the reduction in potential environmental hazard of mine water of JSC "Kola MMC" is achieved through precipitation of heavy metals by iron hydroxide and magnesium hydrosilicate. Preliminary assessment of the feasibility of hydrometallurgical processing of disseminated copper-nickel ores has been made

Studies of Wooden Churches in Finland

Renja Suominen-Kokkonen

In this article the question of how studies of wooden churches in Finland were influenced by Strzygowski, one of the most important European art historians of his day, is also of interest from the perspective of Finnish art history. Discussion and growing interest in the old wooden church building tradition is traced in particular in the work of Lars Pettersson (1918–1993), who began his career in art-historical research in the late 1930s. Throughout his career, Pettersson studied historic wooden churches and chapels in both Finland and Russian Karelia. With reference to a few selected examples concerning the cross-plan churches of Petäjävesi and Ruovesi, my article focuses on how Pettersson’s studies reveal an alternating dialectic of acceptance of and opposition to Strzygowski’s views and ideas. A comparison of their methods reveals a number of similar trains of thought. This cannot be just a coincidence, since Pettersson was already familiar with several studies by Josef Strzygowski when he was writing his master’s thesis. Pettersson’s work as a researcher was naturally influenced by many other factors, such as working for several years for the State Archaeological Commission and the role of the Swedish architect and Professor Erik Lundberg as his doctoral supervisor. It is nonetheless necessary to consider Strzygowski’s and Pettersson’s shared methods of art-historical research which their contemporaries regarded as important.

Constituent period in theoretization of minimalism in architecture

Stevanović Vladimir

The paper analyzes architectural discourse that is formed around the term minimalism, between 1976 and 1999, a period that I consider constitutive for theorization of the term. The presentation is directed by two hypotheses: I) minimalism in architecture does not have a continuous stream of origin, development, and is not a style, direction, movement, school, genre or trend in terms of how it is defined in disciplines such as art history, aesthetics and art theory II) the fact that it's rare for an architect to declare himself a minimalist suggests that minimalism in architecture is actually a product or construct of an architectural discourse that emerged from the need to consolidate the existing obvious and widespread formal idiom in architecture partly during and after post-modernism. It is indicative that the writing of history of minimalism in architecture, in its most intensive period - the nineties, takes place mainly in three cities: London, Barcelona and Milan. In this sense, we can examine how each of these centers emphasized its role, through the ambition of minimalism in architecture to appear as an authentic local creation.

In this work, a frozen concentrated orange juice aggregate production planning is modeled taking into account uncertainty in some parameters. This generates an effective tool to support decision making. The robust optimization approach is based on a linear programming model with multiple products, stages and periods proposed by Munhoz and Morabito (2010). Besides decisions in the production, blending and storage of juices, the model also includes an orange harvesting plan, which considers orange maturation curves. A case study was developed in an orange juice company located in the State of Sao Paulo. This company has different facilities and a worldwide distribution system. The computational results obtained from this robust optimization approach, using an algebraic modeling language and a state-of-the-art optimization solver; indicate that the approach can be useful in real situations.
