A novel five-level neutral-point-clamped inverter with an auxiliary DC source

Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Vinh Long University of Technology Education, Vietnam, Loc Phuoc Nguyen, Hiếu Thanh Bùi et al.

Multi-level inverters have drawn much intention from researchers and industry, in which 3-level inverters have been widely used in practice. One of the most interesting issues is to increase the number of levels to achieve higher performances such as large power, high voltage and low harmonic distortion. Basic multilevel inverter configurations such as neutral point clamping diodes, flying capacitor clamping, and cascaded inverters have their own disadvantages when increasing the number of levels. To overcome these problems, different hybrid multilevel inverters have been proposed. As results, there are a lot of five-level hybrid inverters designed for practical applications. This paper proposes a new hybrid 5-level neutral point clamped inverter by adding auxiliary DC source. The novel hybrid inverter shows its performances comparable to the ideal NPC inverter fed by 4 ideal DC sources, and requires hardware simpler than cascaded and flying multilevel inverters. It has a good ability of self-balancing of the voltages across the DC capacitors. Consequently, simple and effective PWM control strategies can be utilized that enables achieving high working performances. The paper content consists of analyzing of the proposed hybrid inverter configuration, investigating the voltage balance on the DC capacitors, validating control characteristics and studying output performance when applying the carrier based pulse width modulation control. The analysis and characteristics of the proposed configuration are verified through simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Together – Physical Culture and Sports, Information Technologies, Bulgarian Language and Literature

Vocational School of Electrical Engineering and Electronics – Plovdiv, Neli Minkova, Kuzman Danew et al.

The article presents a non-traditional pedagogical practice, which allows to combine the study of traditional Bulgarian folklore dances in the classes of physical education and sports with the knowledge and skills acquired in Bulgarian language and literature and in IT classes. The increase of the physical capacity combines with upgrading students' abilities to select, analyze and synthesize data on Bulgarian folklore, as well as to improve their digital culture.

Design and Optimization of Genetic Algorithm (GA) based High Gain and Directive CPW-Fed Slot Dipole Antenna for Wideband Applications

Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun , India, Raj Gaurav Mishra, Ranjan Mishra et al.

Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed in this paper for the design of a wide bandwidth, high gain and directive CPW-fed slot-dipole antenna. The proposed antenna is built on a FR4 substrate that is cheap and easy to produce. Genetic Algorithm is used to select parameters that reflect antenna geometry to achieve wider bandwidth and reduced return loss (parameter S11) and high gain values at resonant frequency. The antenna design shows a wide operating bandwidth of 1.4 GHz (simulated) and 1.3 GHz (measured) over the X-band, a return loss (S11) of -25.83 dB (simulated) and -23.08 (measured) and a gain and directivity of 5.61 dB (simulated) and 11.87 dB (simulated) at 10.5 GHz resonating frequencies. In this work, all simulations were performed using the ANSYS HFSS v14.0 software. A prototype antenna was produced and then characterized using VNA to validate the design. Measurement results were in good agreement with the results simulated using ANSYS HFSS.
