Martin Ebner, Helmut Werner

Abstract(PPh3)2Pt(η2‐CS2) (1) reagiert mit PMe3, PMe2Ph und PMePh2 zu den (Trithiocarbonato‐S,S′)platin(II)‐Komplexen (PR3)2Pt(η2‐S2CS) (2 – 4).

What math is relevant for a CS or SE student?

Dennis J. Frailey

In the Fall of 2005, Kenneth A. Williams began a discussion on the SIGCSE email list on the topic of what math is relevant for a student in the computing sciences. He began by questioning the value of differential equations, stating that he was "... unable to find a homework assignment or exam question in any Computer Science course that requires differential equations for its solution." [1] I was one of several respondents to that email. This article is a somewhat expanded version of my remarks on that topic.

Luis Carlos Monge Bogantes

Two Selenidoarsenates with Six-Membered Chalcogen Rings

M. Wachhold, W. S. Sheldrick

Abstract The methanolothermal reaction of Rb2CO3 with As2Se3 and black selenium leads to the formation of Rb3AsSe4 and the new selenidoarsenate(V) Rb3AsSe4 · 2Se6 (1), which crystallizes in the cubic space group Fd3̄ (No. 203) with a = 16.660(2) Å, V = 4624.1(1) Å , Z = 8. The structural features are isolated tetrahedral AsSe4 3- anions and Se6 rings in a chair conformation. Whereas the similar reaction with Cs2CO3 only affords the known selenides Cs3AsSe4 and Cs4Se16, replacement of As2Se3 by As2Te3 leads to a compound with similar lattice constants to 1 (Fd3̄, a = 17.275(2) A), containing disordered AsSe4 3- and As2Se4 2- anions, the latter of which exhibit a four-membered As2Se2 ring with m-positioned terminal selenium atoms. The six-membered chalcogen ring is likewise disordered with Se and Te site occupation factors of respectively 0.333 and 0.667 with the result that 2 can be formulated as Cs3AsSe4 · 2Cs2As2Se4 · 6Te4Se2. 2 provides the first example of a TexSe6-x ring to be characterized in the solid state.

Kurt O. Klepp, Norbert A. Harringer, Andreas Kolb

Single crystals of K1.10Zr2Se6, Rb0.86Zr2Se6 and Cs0.80Zr2Se6 were obtained by reacting powdered mixtures of A2Se (A = K, Rb, Cs), Zr and Se at 850 °C. K1.10Zr2Se6 and Rb0.86Zr2Se6 crystallize in space group Immm (Z = 2), with a = 3.746(3), b = 5.354(8), c = 21.929(3) Å and a = 3.756(1), b = 5.354(8), c = 22.81(1) Å , respectively. Cs0.80Zr2Se6 crystallizes in space group Cmc21 (Z = 2), with a = 3.747(1), b = 24.102(5), c = 5.332(2) Å. The compounds are characterized by complex anionic layers 2 ∞[Zr2Se6]x- with intercalated alkali cations. As in ZrSe3, the layers are built from columns of trigonal prisms 1 ∞[ZrSe3], connected by additional waist contacts, yielding an eightfold coordination for the Zr atoms. The mean Zr-Se bond lengths correspond to those found in the binary compound. The Se-Se bond lengths are significantly altered, however, indicating a reduction of the Se-Se bond order due to the electron transfer from the alkali metal.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Slab Flooring as a Barrier to Soil Gas and Radon Infiltration

AD Williamson, CS Fowler, SE McDonough

Experimental studies on the entry of soil gas and radon into slab-on-grade buildings have been carried out in instrumented, single-zone test structures. This work, as part of the Florida Radon Research Program, focused on the effectiveness of slab flooring variants as barriers to soil gas/radon entry. A second objective was the study of the role of subslab fill soil as both a potential source of and barrier to radon entry. Studies were made in well-sealed (∼600 mm2 ELA) unoccupied test buildings placed on well-characterized, radium-bearing sandy fill soil. The buildings were instrumented with data acquisition systems to continuously monitor indoor radon concentrations, differential pressures at several subsurface locations, weather conditions, and soil moisture. The response of the structures to mechanical depressurization as well as natural driving forces was measured. Limited measurements were made regarding direct diffusive transport of radon through apparently intact concrete slabs, as well as transport through cracks in the floor structure.
