S Al-Shammari, C P L Berry, C E A Chapman-Bird
et al.
Gravitational physics and astronomy have developed rapidly over the last decade, driven by new observations and theoretical breakthroughs. As new as the science and technology of this field are, its greatest asset may be the body of early-career researchers actively engaged in driving it forward. With the aim of bringing together this community of enthusiastic scientists from a broad array of disciplines, the organisers of the GR-Amaldi meeting joined with the Gravitational-Wave Early Career Scientists organisation to create a three-day event: the Early Career Workshop. The Workshop aimed to provide a broad overview of the field's diverse scientific possibilities and introduce key theoretical foundations underpinning its science. To complement developing technical skills, the Workshop also sought to provide participants with transferable skills to aid them in their future careers. The Workshop emphasized networking and community building, offering participants opportunities to engage with peers and mentors. It encouraged interdisciplinary exchanges and cross-institutional collaboration, fostering connections across different research efforts. Collectively, these initiatives aimed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the field's research and to build a more cohesive, collaborative community of early-career researchers. We summarise key points and conclusion from the carious activities carried out as part of the Workshop.

KARRIEREWEGE: A Large Scale Career Path Prediction Dataset
Elena Senger, Yuri Campbell, Rob van der Goot
et al.
Accurate career path prediction can support many stakeholders, like job seekers, recruiters, HR, and project managers. However, publicly available data and tools for career path prediction are scarce. In this work, we introduce KARRIEREWEGE, a comprehensive, publicly available dataset containing over 500k career paths, significantly surpassing the size of previously available datasets. We link the dataset to the ESCO taxonomy to offer a valuable resource for predicting career trajectories. To tackle the problem of free-text inputs typically found in resumes, we enhance it by synthesizing job titles and descriptions resulting in KARRIEREWEGE+. This allows for accurate predictions from unstructured data, closely aligning with real-world application challenges. We benchmark existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) models on our dataset and a prior benchmark and observe improved performance and robustness, particularly for free-text use cases, due to the synthesized data.
The Career Interests of Large Language Models
Meng Hua, Yuan Cheng, Hengshu Zhu
Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly extended their capabilities, evolving from basic text generation to complex, human-like interactions. In light of the possibilities that LLMs could assume significant workplace responsibilities, it becomes imminently necessary to explore LLMs' capacities as professional assistants. This study focuses on the aspect of career interests by applying the Occupation Network's Interest Profiler short form to LLMs as if they were human participants and investigates their hypothetical career interests and competence, examining how these vary with language changes and model advancements. We analyzed the answers using a general linear mixed model approach and found distinct career interest inclinations among LLMs, particularly towards the social and artistic domains. Interestingly, these preferences did not align with the occupations where LLMs exhibited higher competence. This novel approach of using psychometric instruments and sophisticated statistical tools on LLMs unveils fresh perspectives on their integration into professional environments, highlighting human-like tendencies and promoting a reevaluation of LLMs' self-perception and competency alignment in the workforce.
Initial Burst of Disruptive Efforts Ensuring Scientific Career Viability
Shuang Zhang, Feifan Liu, Haoxiang Xia
Despite persistent efforts to understand the dynamics of creativity of scientists over careers in terms of productivity, impact, and prize, little is known about the dynamics of scientists' disruptive efforts that affect individual academic careers and drive scientific advance. Drawing on millions of data over six decades and across nineteen disciplines, associating the publication records of individual scientists with the disruption index, we systematically quantify the temporal pattern of disruptive ideas over individual scientific careers, providing a detailed understanding of the macro phenomenon of scientific stagnation from the individual perspective. We start by checking the relationship between disruption-based and citation-based publication profiles. Next, we observe the finite inequality in the disruptive productivity of scientists, diminishing gradually as the level of disruption increases. We then identify the initial burst phenomenon in disruption dynamics. It is further revealed that while early engagement in high disruption frictions away initial productivity, compared to initial advantage in productivity or impact, initial high disruption ensures more subsequent academic viability evidenced by a longer career span and relatively final higher productivity, but does not necessarily guarantee academic success throughout careers. Further analysis shows that increasing disruptive work is uncorrelated to overall productivity but negatively correlated with the overall impact. However, increasing disruptive work in the early career is associated with higher overall productivity, yet lower overall productivity in the later career. Our research underscores the urgent need for a policy shift that encourages a balance between the pursuit of disruptive efforts and the achievement of impactful outcomes.
Queering the role of hostel carers within the sexuality education of visually impaired learners
Lindokuhle M. Ubisi
Background: Literature suggests that the comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) of children with disabilities (CwDs) remains located within parental and educators’ ecologies. However, very little focus has been given to the role of hostel carers, especially given that most special schools are mainly residential schools. As such, there is no policy, guidance, or training consideration for support staff such as hostel carers who equally play a care and support role for the CSE needs of CwDs.
Objectives: The aim of this article was to explore how hostel carers in South African residential schools for the blind (SFB) perceived and responded to their role in providing CSE to visually impaired learners.
Methods: Thirty-six hostel carers from three SFB were conveniently sampled and interviewed in separate focus group discussions. Queer theory underpinned this study, while the data generated was analysed thematically.
Results: Given that visually impaired learners spend 9 months of the year in hostels to be given holistic institutional support, hostel carers reported assuming a major role in their CSE. But because they saw themselves as unqualified, outnumbered by learners, and inundated by other responsibilities (e.g. cooking and cleaning), they reported being powerless and incapable to sufficiently cater for the CSE needs of visually impaired learners.
Conclusion: The study suggests that hostel carers have been neglected as care and support agents, despite playing a crucial role in the growing psychosexual needs of visually impaired learners.
Contribution: A holistic approach to providing CSE to visually impaired learners incorporating carers is provided.

ChatGPT is all you need to decolonize sub-Saharan Vocational Education
Isidora Tourni, Georgios Grigorakis, Isidoros Marougkas
et al.
The advances of Generative AI models with interactive capabilities over the past few years offer unique opportunities for socioeconomic mobility. Their potential for scalability, accessibility, affordability, personalizing and convenience sets a first-class opportunity for poverty-stricken countries to adapt and modernize their educational order. As a result, this position paper makes the case for an educational policy framework that would succeed in this transformation by prioritizing vocational and technical training over academic education in sub-Saharan African countries. We highlight substantial applications of Large Language Models, tailor-made to their respective cultural background(s) and needs, that would reinforce their systemic decolonization. Lastly, we provide specific historical examples of diverse states successfully implementing such policies in the elementary steps of their socioeconomic transformation, in order to corroborate our proposal to sub-Saharan African countries to follow their lead.
Intelligent System for Assessing University Student Personality Development and Career Readiness
Izbassar Assylzhan, Muragul Muratbekova, Daniyar Amangeldi
et al.
While academic metrics such as transcripts and GPA are commonly used to evaluate students' knowledge acquisition, there is a lack of comprehensive metrics to measure their preparedness for the challenges of post-graduation life. This research paper explores the impact of various factors on university students' readiness for change and transition, with a focus on their preparedness for careers. The methodology employed in this study involves designing a survey based on Paul J. Mayer's "The Balance Wheel" to capture students' sentiments on various life aspects, including satisfaction with the educational process and expectations of salary. The collected data from a KBTU student survey (n=47) were processed through machine learning models: Linear Regression, Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest Regression. Subsequently, an intelligent system was built using these models and fuzzy sets. The system is capable of evaluating graduates' readiness for their future careers and demonstrates a high predictive power. The findings of this research have practical implications for educational institutions. Such an intelligent system can serve as a valuable tool for universities to assess and enhance students' preparedness for post-graduation challenges. By recognizing the factors contributing to students' readiness for change, universities can refine curricula and processes to better prepare students for their career journeys.
Danish Supervisors’ Reasons for Hosting Lower Secondary Students in Work Experience Placements
Randi Boelskifte Skovhus, Kristina Mariager-Anderson, Trine Kokholm
The article explores placement supervisors’ reasons for hosting lower secondary students (ages 13-16) in work experience placements (WEP) in Denmark. The theoretical framework employs critical psychology to examine societal conditions, subjects’ interpretations of these, and their reasons for actions, focusing on the perspective of placement supervisors as participants. Based on interviews with five supervisors who have hosted WEP, we describe five thematic groupings of reasons: providing an insight into the world of work; expanding young people’s horizons and basis for making educational and vocational choices; recruiting apprentices and employees to the company and the field of work; added value for the company’s activities; a sense of community responsibility. The reasons seem intertwined and not directly attributed to the interests of either the lower secondary students, the host companies or society. Finally, we discuss implications for practice and underline the significance of understanding supervisors’ reasons for hosting lower secondary students in WEP. Abstrakt Artiklen undersøger praktikværters begrundelser for at modtage skoleelever (13-16 år) i erhvervspraktik. Analysis of influencing factors of subjective career unsuccessfulness of vocational college graduates from the Department of Navigation in China
L. Wang, J. Ye, Yi-Sang Lee
et al.
The marine talent cultivation and output in higher vocational colleges is an important support to build a strong maritime country and ensure the steady development of the shipping business industry. Vocational colleges should ensure effective career preparation and career guidance education for their students, and train them to acquire the professional abilities to work and adapt effectively and quickly in the future. Some studies show that many crew members experience a decline in job satisfaction, a low sense of achievement, and a series of negative subjective career feelings. Even more, some crew members have poor work performance or unsuccessful career development behaviors such as career change or resignation. This study examined the causes and influencing factors of these circumstances and might be a reference for schools to strengthen the quality of their training programs in the future. In-depth interviews with 12 vocational marine navigation college graduates were conducted, and grounded theory was used to code and analyze the collected interview information. Four types of influencing factors were identified: adaptation preparation, career adaptability, adaptation action, and the situational factor. The adaptation preparation factor could be categorized into psychology, determination, lack of certificates, and simple work; the career adaptability factor could be categorized into boring work, busyness, a big gap between expectations and reality, danger, promotion difficulty, poor interpersonal relationships, high pressure, and maladaptation to the surroundings; the adaptation action factor could be categorized into passive fatigue, lack of training, competition, confidence, and planning; while the situational factor could be categorized into the impact of the epidemic, low social status, lack of support from family, and advantages of living on land. To help the marine navigation students better adapt to their jobs and avoid subjective career unsuccessfulness, higher vocational colleges need to strengthen students’ mental health education, consolidate knowledge and skills training, encourage students to obtain more vocational competency certificates, enhance their interpersonal communication skills, do effective career planning, pay attention to physical exercise and safety awareness training, and adopt other career management and counseling suggestions.
THE APPLICATION OF THE CUSTOMIZED SERVQUAL MODEL FOR CAREER GUIDANCE TRAINING: INDUSTRY 4.0 CHALLENGES
A. Kononiuk, Alicja E. Gudanowska
The importance of vocational guidance is growing, and the focus on modern tools enabling the development of competences such as flexibility, the ability to identify trends shaping the labour market and considering different scenarios of its development seem to be indispensable to survive in the world of work. The goal of the paper is to demonstrate a methodology and the outcomes of a research focused on the difference between the ideal characteristics and impressions of completed education by career counsellors in Poland. The research methods used are: the literature review, bibliometric analysis and the analysis and logical construction method. To diagnose the educational offerings the authors applied a modified SERVQUAL model. The observed gaps demonstrate the presence of significant discrepancies between the evaluation of the completed courses and the expectations of the respondents. Therefore, the expectations of those who took part in the survey about the quality of education in the field of vocational guidance are not fulfilled. The results of the analysis allow also to conclude that curricula only take little account of trend and scenario analysis tools specific to Industry 4.0; and this demonstrates a major challenge for including this curriculum content in the area of vocational guidance.
Computer-assisted Career Guidance Systems User Impact: An Evaluation study
Fatima E. Hamdani, Marie Gribouval, Barbara Moissa
et al.
Computer-assisted Career Guidance Systems (CACGs) have become extremely important; they support users, particularly, high school students to develop self-understanding, vocational understanding, and beyond. Notwithstanding all the progress and interest ported to the development of innovative and efficient career and vocational guidance, in the human-computer interaction domain, several questions remain unanswered. One of these questions regards the direct and indirect effects such systems can have on the user's decision-making process during his vocational and/or career projects. So far, the evaluation of user impact evaluation is limited, making it an area that needs further investigation. In this context, this work presents a survey instrument to evaluate the impact of CACGs on high school students based on the system utility attributes, hedonic attributes, and social/engagement attributes. This study contributes to the general body of knowledge on Computer-assisted Career Guidance Systems by providing a comprehensive theoretical foundation and practical implications that illuminate the sustained use of CACGs.
Human in the loop approaches in multi-modal conversational task guidance system development
Ramesh Manuvinakurike, Sovan Biswas, Giuseppe Raffa
et al.
Development of task guidance systems for aiding humans in a situated task remains a challenging problem. The role of search (information retrieval) and conversational systems for task guidance has immense potential to help the task performers achieve various goals. However, there are several technical challenges that need to be addressed to deliver such conversational systems, where common supervised approaches fail to deliver the expected results in terms of overall performance, user experience and adaptation to realistic conditions. In this preliminary work we first highlight some of the challenges involved during the development of such systems. We then provide an overview of existing datasets available and highlight their limitations. We finally develop a model-in-the-loop wizard-of-oz based data collection tool and perform a pilot experiment.
