Christianity without Christ?

Ever since the publication of Dohm’s Ueber die bürgerliche Verbesserung der Juden (On the Civil Improvement of the Jews) in 1781, which argued for Jewish political equality on humanitarian grounds, more and more voices joined those demands. Prominent among them was David Friedländer, a friend and disciple of Moses Mendelssohn. One of the leading figures of the Berlin Haskalah, he worked towards establishing equal legal status for Jews in Prussia. Friedländer did not accept the given view of his times, the antithesis of Jew and German. For him only the antithesis Jew–Christian existed and even that he tried to reconcile by finding common ground in a religion of reason, the groundwork of which he laid out in an Open Letter in 1799. What he proposed at that time may have been illusionary, but it certainly met with approval in enlightened Jewish circles. Friedländer therefore not only stands for those who dared to break with the traditions, but also for the generation of those who consciously aimed at the denationalization of traditional Judaism – and thus decided in favour of the confessionalization and the Germanness of the Jews.

This article presents some insights into the German developments of studying Judaism and the Jewish tradition and relates them to the ongoing development of the subject at universities in the Nordic countries in general and Norway in particular. It also aims to present some conclusions concerning why it might be interesting for Norwegian society to intensify the study of Judaism at its universities.

Egzegeza Mt 28,16-20 z hebrajskiej wersji Ewangelii wg św. Mateusza (shemtob)

The following article is an analysis of Mt 28,16-20 of the Hebrew version of the Gospel according to St. Matthew (ShemTob). The first chapter contains an original Hebrew text and Polish translation of Mt 28,16-20. The second one shows the literary structure of this fragment and the problem of the origin of MtShemTob. The main section contains a commentary on MtShemTob 28,16-20. It seems to suggest that the object of the apostolic ministry of the twelve disciples of Jesus should be only Jews.

Se presenta aquí el testimonio inédito acerca del amuleto y se plantean también algunos de los problemas que suscita: identificación de los personajes; estado del hebraísmo hacia 1496; cuestiones de texto e imagen; conocimientos del judaísmo entre los conversos después de la expulsión; singularidad de la evidencia archivística frente a los amuletos judíos sin fecha y lugar.

Introducing Teenagers to a Dialogue with Judaism as the Task of School Catechesis

This analysis proves that introducing teenagers to a dialogue with Judaism is one of catechesis’s tasks. This task has been outlined in the post-conciliar documents of the Catholic Church. It underlines the spiritual ties between Catholic people and the Jews and promotes forming an attitude of openness towards followers of the Mosaic religion. It also contributes to mitigating anti-Semitism among Catholic teenagers. At the same time, it raises interest in Jewish traditions and culture. In the religion syllabus in lower and post-secondary schools we can come across numerous references (mainly indirect) to Judaism. The focus on passing honest knowledge about Judaism can be also clearly visible. In this way, formation of the cognitive element of inter- religious dialogue takes place. On the other hand, less attention is devoted to other components of this attitude such as the emotional and behavioural elements. That is why there is a demand to complete the lacking elements by watching films and having discussions. The above mentioned multimedia materials called “The religion lesson” have been prepared to satisfy this need. Great importance is also attached to creating situations that allow Christian teenagers to participate in meetings with the Jews. It can be organized in the form of Days of Judaism and panel discussions with Jews and distinguished contemporary theologians and philosophers. Open meetings with representatives of Judaism are a great opportunity to perceive the Jews as “older brethren in the faith”. They let young people discover the cultural wealth and vision of Judaism and teach teenagers respect for the religious beliefs of the Jews. Thereby, they can contribute to the change of mentality of young participants of catechesis in their approach to Judaism. It is worth referring to the works of Jewish culture in these activities. It is the cultural heritage that comprises a great reference point to showing the strong Judaic roots of Christian culture. Thus, it is necessary, for the topics in Judaism proposed for religious syllabuses and catechetical material to be closely connected with organizing meetings of young Catholics with followers of the Mosaic religion. Only this kind of experience can contribute to an authentic inter-religious dialogue.

The image of the God to whom we pray: An evolutionary psychobiological perspective

Based on knowledge generated through our outer senses and with our use of reasoning and within the scientific discipline of evolutionary psychobiology we can make a reasonable presumption about God. The presumption concerns the image of the God to whom we pray. In the behavior that we use in the non-vocal aspect of petitioning prayer we (all persons of the three Abrahamic faiths) relate behaviorally in our «body language» to God as though He is a high status male Lord rather than how modern children relate to a loving father. We do this even though «Father» is used for God in the various English translations of the New Testament an order of magnitude more than the term «LORD». How this paradox could have developed and how it is resolved is presented
