Maqāṣidī Exegesis: A Path for Promoting Gender Equality in Contemporary Islamic Discourse
Abdullah Affandi, M. Mu'tashim Billah, Muh. Syaifudin
This research explores the potential of maqāṣidī exegesis as a framework for interpreting the Qur'an that can promote gender equality in contemporary Islamic discourse. Starting from the reality that classical exegesis often reflects patriarchal social constructs, this study offers an alternative approach that emphasizes the main objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah), such as justice, welfare, and the protection of human dignity. Using qualitative content analysis, comparative analysis, and a hermeneutic approach, this study examines several key verses related to gender—including polygamy, inheritance, testimony, and qiwāmah—through the lens of maqāṣidī. The research findings indicate that this approach not only reconstructs the understanding of gender relations in Islam in a more just and equitable manner but also challenges the patriarchal interpretative legacy that has been entrenched in the tradition of exegesis. The novelty of this study lies in the systematic application of maqāṣidī exegesis to gender issues comprehensively, not merely through a feminist approach, but by asserting that the values of gender justice are inherent in maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah itself. These findings provide a conceptual contribution to the development of value-based and ethical Islamic exegesis. They are relevant for reforming Islamic law to be more responsive to contemporary social dynamics.

Purepofo: A Cutting-Edge Tool for Comprehensive Halal and ESG Screening with Multi-Faceted Stock Performance Assessment
Hazem Hamoudia, Firdaus Fanny Putera Perdana
This article examines the application of the stock screening tool “purepofo” (www.purepofo.com), which integrates Halal and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria with a comprehensive performance assessment based on widely used financial metrics. The article evaluates Purepofo’s ability to align Shariah compliance and ESG standards with performance-driven investing, addressing ethical and financial imperatives. The study presents a comparative analysis of the financial performance of stocks screened using a combined screening approach versus non-screened counterparts, while also outlining methodological limitations. Key findings reveal that Halal and ESG-screened stocks outperformed peers in several financial dimensions, including operational efficiency, dividend reliability, and resilience to market volatility. Notably, these stocks demonstrated higher Sharpe Ratios, more substantial gross margins, and consistent revenue growth, challenging the perception of a trade-off between ethical compliance and financial performance. However, limitations, such as the underrepresentation of high-growth stocks and valuation complexities, highlight the need for further methodological refinement. The discussion emphasises the potential of a customised financial metrics model to support investors in achieving competitive returns without compromising ethical integrity. The results suggest that Halal-ESG stocks offer more than symbolic ethical Value; they exhibit measurable financial resilience, governance, and sustainability strength. While alignment with Maqasid al-Shariah principles remains central, the data—rather than ideals alone—positions Islamic finance as a leader in sustainable investing. This article contributes to the growing discourse on Halal-ESG integration by offering actionable insights for Islamic finance portfolio managers, Shariah scholars, and thought leaders. Bridging ethical compliance, sustainability, and financial performance highlights the role of integrated tools in advancing innovation and inclusivity in global finance.

Dewi Ratnawati, Ahmad Zainal Abidin, Eko Zulfikar
There are at least two factors that trigger problems in the Qur`an learning in the industrial era 4.0: the rejection of changes that occur in educators and acceptance of changes, but the available technological infrastructure cannot support learning of the Qur`an into the realm of education in the era industry 4.0. This resulted in failure in learning the Qur`an. The manifestations of this failure are in the form of unsuccessful character building for students to have Qur`anic characters, fading love of students for the Qur`an, loss of students' polite behavior, and limited material received only limited to cognitive knowledge without performance abilities. The Emerging Islam in America
Sholawati Sholawati
Islam has an essential role in the development of human civilization. As a relatively new religion, Islam has developed very rapidly for over 1500 years. Currently, Islam is recorded as the second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, with followers of more than 1.5 billion. Based on several official survey institutions, in 2025, it is predicted that Muslims will reach 30% of the earth’s population and become the largest religion in the world. Islam was born in the Arabian Peninsula and has spread throughout the world. Muslims can be found in almost all countries, including underdeveloped countries, developing countries, and developed countries. Even the United States, with the most substantial economic, political, and military power globally, is inseparable from Muslims in its development process. Edward E. Curtis, in his book Muslim Americans in The Military, mentioned various historical evidence showing Muslim participation in America. According to this Professor of Religion from the University of Indianapolis, Muslims had played a significant role, from discovering the Americas to defending the north’s victories in the United States Civil War.2 Also, he added that even though Christopher Columbus was the sailor who discovered America, that discovery would be impossible to happen without Muslims.

RADIKALISASI GERAKAN JAMAAH ANSHARUT TAUHID DAN PENGARUH ISIS DI INDONESIA
Asman Abdullah
This research was a case study that observed the movement of Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid. JAT movement is a jihad movement with the aim of fighting for Islamic Sharia in Indonesia. This research uses qualitative deskriptif method in direct contact with the object under study. It gives a complete picture of the phenomenon of radical Islamic JAT movements that was religiously motivated and understand the process of dynamics and the purpose of the social change that they want. The radical changes that they expect was contradict with the regime in Indonesia. The government's refreshing action accompanies every step of the JAT jihadists. In fact, excessive force often carried out by the authorities to provide a deterrent effect. But such actions only lead to jihadist heroism and reinforce their beliefs. Two things should be explained in the JAT movement, firstly, JAT involvement in Aceh military training in 2010. This military training involved cross-tanzhim jihad in Indonesia. The alumnus of this training will form a new radical network affiliated with ISIS. Second, the influence of ISIS in Indonesia caused a split in JAT. For JAT jihadi that supports ISIS still survives under the leadership of Abu Bakar Ba'asyir and Aman Abdurrahman while those who refuse to join ISIS have to get out of tanzhim. Those who came out of JAT formed a new organisation with the name of Jamaah Anshorut Syariah (JAS) under the leadership of Muhammad Achwan.

Political Necissities of the Goal-oriented Universe from the Perspective of the Holy Quran
mohammad abedi
The study of the position of the Universe as the material world has a special significance in its purposefulness or instrumentalism in politics. The question is that whether acquiring different dimensions of Universe is the purpose of politics, or it is the mean by which politicians approach to the goals of politics. This research revealed that those who have an independent viewpoint of the universe, consider the universe as the goal of politics. Another group does not value the existence of the universe, and the third group considers it as the mean of achieving the goals beyond the prosperity of the eternal life. This study, by examining the verses of the Quran, attempts to show which group is accepted in the Quran and which is criticized.

Men in Charge? Rethinking Authority in Muslim Legal Tradition
Shehnaz Haqqani
At a time when men’s assumption of leadership roles through all-male events
and publications is a popular phenomenon, Men in Charge?, a byproduct of
a project by the women-led organization Musawah, could not have been published
at a more opportune moment. Comprising a foreword by Zainah Anwar,
Musawah’s director, an introduction by the editors, and ten chapters from academics
and activists of varied backgrounds, the book historicizes and problematizes
the Islamic idea of qiwāmah (authority) and wilāyah (guardianship),
among other legal patriarchal precepts. It successfully argues that the Islamic
legal tradition with regards to gender roles rests on the false notion of male
superiority.
Men in Charge? carries immeasurable value for scholars and students
of Islam, religion, women’s and gender studies, activists working toward gender-
egalitarianism, and (Muslim) feminists seeking empowerment within a
religious framework. It also speaks to reform leaders and lawmakers in Muslim
states, who might better understand the fundamental assumptions upon
which family laws operate and their disconnect from the reality that women
and families face. The book’s major success lies in covering several important
layers of the myth of male authority, from the theoretical gaps in the notions
of qiwāmah, wilāyah, and istikhlāf to a practical examination of the impact of
these legal principles and proposals for new and creative approaches for feminists
to apply in their vision of a gender-egalitarian Islam.
Men in Charge? can be divided into two sections: (1) a theoretical discussion
of the problems raised through fiqh rulings on gender and proposes
new ways through which Muslim feminists can approach those problems and
(2) an analysis of the established ideals’ practical impacts. Ziba Mir-Hosseini’s
discussion in the first chapter, “Muslim Legal Tradition and the Challenge
of Gender Equality,” effectively contextualizes the book’s broader
discussion: What Muslim scholars did in the early twentieth century to challenge
the legal tradition’s normative thought in an effort to move toward
more democratic and egalitarian family systems.
According to the ideas of the scholars from the past and those from the
more modern period, there appears to be an inconsistency between the two
groups’ understanding of “woman.” This suggests that the idea of woman is ...
Analisis Efisiensi Baitul Maal Wat Tamwil Dengan Pendekatan Two Stage Data Envelopment Analysis (Studi Kasus Kantor Cabang BMT MMU Dan BMT UGT Sidogiri)
Muhammad Mahbubi Ali, Ir Ascarya

JEL Classification : G21, R15

Keywords : Efisiensi, BMT, Two Stage DEA

Symposium on Muslims in Europe
Abdulaziz Sachedina
The question of a Muslim minority in the Western context has become an
important one in view of some h-and-hysteria literatu~th at continues to depict
this minority as a threat to Western liberal values and sociopolitical systems.
The conference papers were structured around a basic theme of “Muslims, Islam,
and Diaspora,” which reveals the difficulty of European scholars as well as
government officials in accurately conceptualizing the Muslim experience of
immigration in the West.
To be sure, there is no concept of an eschatological ”promised land” or “holy
land” in the Qur’an to suggest “diaspora” - the dispersion of its adherents from
it - even in the remotest sense of the term. The entire earth, according to the
Qur’an, belongs to God and has been created for humanity to seek its own
advancement towards the moral and spiritual goals wherever it so chooses, as
long as no injustices are committed against fellow humans beings. The concept
of dZir al hijrah, on the other hand, captures the spirit of Muslim emigration
to the West. It is a journey undertaken to overcome spiritual and moral
“homelessness,” a physical transferral to the sphere which holds out the promise
of deviatiog the unfavorable conditions prevalent in one’s awn place of domicile.
To this early meaning of emigration (hijrah) of a person from a particular place
or set of surroundings to seek protection is added emigration for the sake of
economic advantage, either temporanly or permanently, somewhere else. In other
words, for Muslims this sphere of emigration is not what Europe wants to
perceive, namely, a “diaspora” that would make them endeavor to return from
the “diaspora” to their “holy land” located somewhere in Arabia.
Apart from this lack of conceptual clarity in categorizing the Muslims’
perception of their spatial relationship in the West, European scholars and
administrators are faced with another difficulty. This was discussed by Reinhard
Schulze following his paper on ”International Organization and Muslims in
Europe.” Schulze pointed out the inadequacy with which Europe defines the word
“religion” and then imposes it on Islam, expecting to discover a central Islamic
“church” headed by a Muslim “bishop” with whom the government can establish
administrative relations. Even more difficult for homogenous European nations
like France, where the majority is Catholic, is to recognize the existence of other
“religions“ besides Christianity for administrative purposes. This difficulty is
self-created, because such recognition entails empowering the followers of other ...

Reconstruction of Islamic Thought and Civilization
Mohammad Mumtaz Ali
This article reviews the intellectual manifestations of Islamic revivalist
movements in general and the Islamization of Knowledge movement in
particular. The paper argues that the intellectual crisis of the Muslim
Ummah was identified by most of the earlier thinkers and leaders but it
did not receive sufficient attention. It reviews the assessment of the
intellectual crisis by Muslim thinkers, such as Iqbal and Mawdudi, and
identifies their understanding of the need and nature of ijtihad. The
paper then proceeds to reflect on the foundations and achievements of
the Islamization of Knowledge movement. The paper explores the relationship
between sociopolitical revival and intellectual revival and concludes
that the reconstruction of Islamic thought is a prerequisite to the
regeneration of Islamic civilization.
