Identification of a cytokinin-responsive core promoter and interacting transcription factors of MtCKX1 in Medicago truncatula
Yinruizhi Li, Mengdi Wang, Can Zhu
et al.
Abstract Background Cytokinin oxidases/dehydrogenases (CKXs) are key enzymes regulating cytokinin homeostasis and plant development, yet their transcriptional regulation remains poorly characterized, especially in legumes. Results Here, we combined promoter truncation, transgenic analysis, and DNA-protein interaction assays to dissect the regulatory mechanism of MtCKX1 in Medicago truncatula. A 1789 bp promoter region was identified, harboring multiple cis-elements responsive to hormones (CK, IAA, ABA, JA, GA) and stresses. Truncation analysis and GUS assay revealed a core cytokinin-responsive region (− 1789 to − 1125 bp), with one construct (CKXp2) functioning as a strong, specific cytokinin-inducible promoter throughout plant development. Using DNA pull-down mass spectrometry, yeast one-hybrid assays, and dual-luciferase reporter, we further demonstrated that C2H2 and GRF transcription factors directly bind to the MtCKX1 promoter. Conclusions These findings provide novel insights into the transcriptional regulation of CKX genes and highlight the potential of engineered promoters for precise spatiotemporal control of gene expression in biotechnology applications.
An Initial Survey of Unionid Mussels in Lakes East of the Missouri River in South Dakota, USA
Riley E. Henderson, Katherine M. Wollman, Chelsey A. Pasbrig
et al.
This study surveyed freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) in 116 lakes and reservoirs east of the Missouri River in South Dakota, USA, during 2017. Using two-person–hour/site timed searches, evidence of a total of 1789 mussels, including 1053 live mussels, was obtained from 50 waters. Nine species, from two different orders, were found in lakes and reservoirs throughout five of the six major river drainages east of the Missouri River. The native species observed included Giant Floater Pyganodon grandis, Fatmucket Lampsilis siliquoidea, Threeridge Amblema plicata, White Heelsplitter Lasmigona complanata, Wabash Pigtoe Fusconaia flava, Deertoe Truncilla truncata, and Pink Heelsplitter Potamilus alatus. Giant Floater was the most widespread and abundant species observed, representing 63.3% of the live mussels sampled. Two non-native species, Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha and Chinese Basket Clam Corbicula fluminea, were also documented from three water bodies in the lower Missouri River drainage. Overall, mussel abundance was negatively correlated with lake water conductivity and positively correlated with turbidity. No significant correlations were observed between species abundance and water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, or substrate particle size.

Krzysztof Prabucki
Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na wciąż niedocenioną w badaniach nad literaturą osiemnastego wieku postać Wojciecha Turskiego, której przedstawienie okazuje się inspirującą podstawą do rozważań nad polskim sarmatyzmem. W tym celu zostały omówione dzieła Alberta Sarmaty m. in.
Efficacy and Safety of Fractional CO2 Laser Combined with Halometasone Cream for Treatment of Moderate-to-Severe Chronic Hand Eczema: A Prospective, Single-Center, Parallel-Group, Open-Label Randomized Trial
Gongfeng Tang, Yuan Chang, Haixuan Wu
et al.
Abstract Introduction The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of fractional CO2 laser combined with halometasone cream in patients with moderate-to-severe chronic hand eczema (CHE). Methods A prospective, single-center, parallel-group, open-label randomized trial including 67 patients with moderate-to-severe CHE was carried out. Patients were randomly assigned to group A (n = 33, fractional CO2 laser once every 4 weeks 1–2 times and halometasone cream twice daily for 8 weeks) or group B (n = 34, halometasone cream alone twice daily for 8 weeks). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving treatment success at week 12 in each group. Secondary endpoints included differences between groups in the change of hand eczema severity index (HECSI), patient global assessment (PaGA), dermatology life quality index (DLQI), and quality of life in hand eczema questionnaire (QOLHEQ) from baseline to week 12. Relapse rate and adverse effects were also recorded. Results A total of 29 patients in each group completed the trial. At week 12, the treatment success rate was 62.1% (18/29) in group A and 27.6% (8/29) in group B (p = 0.009). At week 12, HECSI, PaGA, DLQI, and QOLHEQ all decreased compared with baseline in both groups (p < 0.05). HECSI, DLQI, and QOLHEQ decreased more in group A than group B (p = 0.014, 0.010, and 0.014, respectively), but there was no significant difference in change of PaGA between the two groups (1.0 versus 3.0, p = 0.419). Among patients achieving treatment success, 11.1% (2/18) patients in group A and 50.0% (4/8) patients in group B relapsed at week 24 (p = 0.011). Skin pigmentation was the most common adverse effect. Conclusions For patients with moderate-to-severe CHE, fractional CO2 laser combined with halometasone cream is more effective than halometasone cream alone, with few adverse effects. Trial Registration Number ChiCTR2100051948.

Accounting for gender research performance differences in ranking universities
Giovanni Abramo, Ciriaco Andrea D'Angelo
The literature on the theme of gender differences in research performance indicates a quite evident gap in favor of men over women. Beyond the understanding of the factors that could be at the basis of this phenomenon, it is worthwhile understanding if it would be appropriate to conduct the evaluation per population in a manner distinguished by gender. In fact if there is some factor that structurally determines a penalization of performance by women researchers compared to men then the comparative evaluation of organizations' performance that does not take gender into account will lead to an advantage for those that employ more men, under parity in the capacities of their staffs. In this work we measure the differences of the performance and the rank of research institutions as observed when gender is taken into account compared to when it is ignored. The study population consists of all Italian universities and the performance measured in the hard sciences for the period 2006-2010.
Europa en el siglo XXI. Anatomía de una crisis
Antonio Moreno Juste

Marx vs. Buda: Colonialism, War, and the Roots of the Communist Party of Burma (1930-1945)
Daniel Gomà
The purpose of this article is to determine the building process of Burmese Marxism and its relation to other ideologies of the anticolonial movement, and the consequences of the founding of the Communist Party of Burma (CPB). We will analyze the formative period of the PCB and its difficulties to consolidate its ideology in a complex political, social and cultural environment and how its actions during World War II will permit the party to become the country’s main political force. But the opportunity of having absolute power in its hands will be missed and will mark the beginning of his political decline.

Characterizing Honeypot-Captured Cyber Attacks: Statistical Framework and Case Study
Zhenxin Zhan, Maochao Xu, Shouhuai Xu
Rigorously characterizing the statistical properties of cyber attacks is an important problem. In this paper, we propose the {\em first} statistical framework for rigorously analyzing honeypot-captured cyber attack data. The framework is built on the novel concept of {\em stochastic cyber attack process}, a new kind of mathematical objects for describing cyber attacks. To demonstrate use of the framework, we apply it to analyze a low-interaction honeypot dataset, while noting that the framework can be equally applied to analyze high-interaction honeypot data that contains richer information about the attacks. The case study finds, for the first time, that Long-Range Dependence (LRD) is exhibited by honeypot-captured cyber attacks. The case study confirms that by exploiting the statistical properties (LRD in this case), it is feasible to predict cyber attacks (at least in terms of attack rate) with good accuracy. This kind of prediction capability would provide sufficient early-warning time for defenders to adjust their defense configurations or resource allocations. The idea of "gray-box" (rather than "black-box") prediction is central to the utility of the statistical framework, and represents a significant step towards ultimately understanding (the degree of) the {\em predictability} of cyber attacks.

Historical overview of the literature on business performance measurement from the beginning to the present
Kinga Emese Zsidó
The paper summarizes the concept of business performance and the performance measurement. The concept of business performance has changed a lot over the past decades. The managers have understood that in order to achieve organizational goals, more emphasis should be placed outside the owners, on other market participants, on the stakeholders (eg: customers, clients, employees, suppliers and other partners, local communities, …). The ’90s are also called „The performance measurement revolution”, because a lot of new performance measurement methods, systems appeared. The performance measurements have the prominent role: to collect information about where we are going to achieve the goals, if needed for intervention.

Waterborne outbreak of gastroenteritis: effects on sick leaves and cost of lost workdays.
Jaana I Halonen, Mika Kivimäki, Tuula Oksanen
et al.

Background
In 2007, part of a drinking water distribution system was accidentally contaminated with waste water effluent causing a gastroenteritis outbreak in a Finnish town. We examined the acute and cumulative effects of this incidence on sick leaves among public sector employees residing in the clean and contaminated areas, and the additional costs of lost workdays due to the incidence.
Methods
Daily information on sick leaves of 1789 Finnish Public Sector Study participants was obtained from employers' registers. Global Positioning System-coordinates were used for linking participants to the clean and contaminated areas. Prevalence ratios (PR) for weekly sickness absences were calculated using binomial regression analysis. Calculations for the costs were based on prior studies.
Results
Among those living in the contaminated areas, the prevalence of participants on sick leave was 3.54 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.97-4.22) times higher on the week following the incidence compared to the reference period. Those living and working in the clean area were basically not affected, the corresponding PR for sick leaves was 1.12, 95% CI 0.73-1.73. No cumulative effects on sick leaves were observed among the exposed. The estimated additional costs of lost workdays due to the incidence were 1.8-2.1 million euros.
Conclusions
The prevalence of sickness absences among public sector employees residing in affected areas increased shortly after drinking water distribution system was contaminated, but no long-term effects were observed. The estimated costs of lost workdays were remarkable, thus, the cost-benefits of better monitoring systems for the water distribution systems should be evaluated.

The Transformation of the Ottoman State, 1789-1908
K. H. Karpat
The study of the Ottoman state in tĥe latter part of the eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth demands a broader analytical framework than hitherto used if its transformation and the social and political history of the Middle East, the Balkans, and even North Africa, which were parts of the Ottoman State at one time or other, are to be properly evaluated and interpreted.
