Our Good Neighbors' Forestry

M. A. Huberman

Abstract The Forestry Division of Food and Agriculture Organization in the United Nations is committed to help all countries desiring aid to survey their forest resources and work out policies for long-term use on a sound basis. Preliminary to such aid it is necessary to collect information generally on the forests and their use in several countries. Herein the author reports on a quick trip around South America in which he visited eleven countries. Though vast difficulties must be overcome he is optimistic over the future development of the forests of our southern neighbors. The need for technical aid is vast. Much it is felt can be accomplished by working with the several governments through the Food and Agriculture Organization.

Forestry in Sierra Leone

W. D. MacGregor

Abstract Small tropical colonies often go through the cycles of heavy forest exploitation, "shifting cultivation," severe soil erosion, creation of open forests and grasslands, and even desert and wastelands, followed by heroic measures of forest restoration and soil conservation within a time span of a few decades. Similar cycles in larger lands of temperate climes may require a century or more. The writer describes such a land exploitation cycle on Sierra Leone. It carries an important message of interest not only to those concerned with tropical forest policies, but also to those who must work with an unschooled population to carry out impressive conservation programs.
