Abstract Background Many pregnant women and parents have concerns about vaccines. This analysis examined the impact of MomsTalkShots, an individually tailored educational application, on vaccine attitudes of pregnant women and mothers. Methods MomsTalkShots was the patient-level component of a multi-level intervention to improve maternal and infant vaccine uptake that also included provider- and practice-level interventions. The impact of these interventions was studied using a two-by-two factorial design, randomizing at both the patient- and the practice-level. Study staff recruited pregnant women from a diverse set of prenatal care practices in Colorado and Georgia between June 2017 and July 2018. All participants (n = 2087) received a baseline survey of maternal and infant vaccine intentions and attitudes, and two follow-up surveys at least 1 month and 1 year after their infant’s birth, respectively. Half of participants (n = 1041) were randomly assigned to receive educational videos through MomsTalkShots, algorithmically tailored to their vaccine intentions, attitudes, and demographics. Since the practice/provider intervention did not appear impactful, this analysis focused on MomsTalkShots regardless of the practice/provider intervention. Results By 1 month post-birth, MomsTalkShots increased perceived risk of maternal influenza disease (61% among MomsTalkShots recipients vs 55% among controls; Odds Ratio: 1.61, 95% Confidence Interval: 1.23–2.09), confidence in influenza vaccine efficacy (73% vs 63%; OR: 1.97, 95%CI: 1.47–2.65), and perceived vaccine knowledge (55% vs 48%; OR: 1.39, 95%CI: 1.13–1.72). Among those intending not to vaccinate at baseline, MomsTalkShots increased perceived risk of maternal influenza disease (38% vs 32%; OR: 2.07, 95%CI: 1.15–3.71) and confidence in influenza vaccine efficacy (44% vs 28%; OR: 2.62, 95%CI: 1.46–4.69). By 1 year post-birth, MomsTalkShots increased perceived vaccine knowledge (62% vs 50%; OR: 1.74, 95%CI: 1.36–2.24) and trust in vaccine information from obstetricians and pediatricians (64% vs 55%; OR: 1.53, 95%CI: 1.17–2.00). Among those uncertain about vaccinating at baseline, MomsTalkShots increased perceived vaccine knowledge (47% vs 12%; OR: 6.89, 95%CI: 1.52–31.25) and reduced infant vaccine safety concerns (71% vs 91%; OR: 0.24, 95%CI: 0.06–0.98). Conclusions MomsTalkShots improved pregnant women’s and mothers’ knowledge and perceptions of maternal and infant vaccines and the diseases they prevent, and offers a scalable tool to address vaccine hesitancy. SARS-CoV-2 is a highly contagious virus, which appeared in China in late 2019, spread rapidly and caused the largest pandemic in the last 100 years. Despite the intensive research, there is no specific antiviral drug currently. Effective vaccines have been developed in a short time and they are already widely used. As a RNA virus, SARS-CoV-2 mutates constantly, and several thousand genetic variants have emerged in the course of the pandemic, some of which are associated with increased infectivity, reinfection risk, reduced activity of therapeutic antibodies and reduced effectiveness of vaccines. This review highlights the features in SARS-CoV-2 structure and replication cycle that would help to understand the significance of individual mutations contained in the emerging genetic variants and to predict the impact of mutations on viral transmissibility, disease severity, diagnostics, therapeutics or immune escape. The main characteristics of the variants of concern are presented.

Background: Healthcare workers are at greater risk of acquiring measles than the general population. Transmission occurs from infected patients to staff and from infected staff to patients and colleagues. In inpatient and outpatient settings, susceptible patients suffering from other conditions, especially the elderly and severely ill patients in intensive care units are at a high risk of severe disease or death if infected with measles. The most effective preventive measure against measles is vaccination with two doses of a measles-containing vaccine. Aim: To perform a serological assessment of the presence of measles IgG antibodies among healthcare workers. Materials and Methods: The present study involves serological testing performed on samples from persons working in hospitals and Regional Health Inspectorates in the country. Screening started in connection with a reported measles outbreak in Bulgaria in 2019, and continued into early 2020. An indirect ELISA assay for the detection of specific measles IgG antibodies in serum samples was used. Results: The tested 152 healthcare workers were from 5 regions of the country, i.e. Sofia-capital (n=87), Burgas (n=6), Blagoevgrad (n=5), Dobrich (n=8) and Pazardzhik (n=46). Anti-measles IgG antibodies were detected in 85.5% of the participants (130/152). Negative results, indicating a possible lack of protective immunity against measles, were obtained primarily in samples from persons younger than 40 years of age. Conclusion: Screening to identify healthcare workers who lack presumptive evidence of protective immunity against measles should be reinforced, especially among younger healthcare workers, in order to minimize the risk of measles both among healthcare workers and among patients.

Acute respiratory infections cause significant morbidity and mortality even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic restrictions decreased circulation of many respiratory viruses but some less troubling infections such as common cold are still circulating.
 One of the most frequent causative agents of common cold are rhinoviruses. The fact that these pathogens have been able to slip through anti-COVID preventive measures raises the question of whether we really know this group of viruses and whether these viruses cause only common cold. The clinical impact of rhinoviruses seems to be underestimated.
 In searching of an answer how rhinoviruses have slipped through the anti-COVID precautions we referred to the work of infectious disease specialists, virologists and epidemiologists -much of it conducted decades before the current pandemic. A non-systematic search of the literature is performed. Some of the latest findings on rhinoviruses along with basic knowledge on their biology and clinical impact are summarized in this review.
