The Causal Second Law

I argue that if a special science satisfies certain key assumptions that are familiar from physicalist accounts of the special sciences and from physics, then its causal regularities have an associated notion of entropy, and that this causal entropy cannot decrease from a robust cause to its effect. Due to its analogy with the second laws of thermodynamics and statistical physics, I call the latter conclusion the causal second law. In this paper, I clarify the key assumptions, prove the causal second law, give sufficient conditions for causal entropy increase, relate the causal second law to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, and argue that the reversibility objection does not threaten it. In addition, I claim that the causal second law is compatible with a non-metaphysical understanding of supervenience and the open systems view, argue that it does not imply a causal time arrow, reflect on relaxing the robustness condition, question whether it is necessary to invoke thermodynamics to show that special sciences' time arrows exist, and discuss a transition-relative-frequency-based, special-science-internal characterization of causal regularities.

RephQA: Evaluating Readability of Large Language Models in Public Health Question Answering

Large Language Models (LLMs) hold promise in addressing complex medical problems. However, while most prior studies focus on improving accuracy and reasoning abilities, a significant bottleneck in developing effective healthcare agents lies in the readability of LLM-generated responses, specifically, their ability to answer public health problems clearly and simply to people without medical backgrounds. In this work, we introduce RephQA, a benchmark for evaluating the readability of LLMs in public health question answering (QA). It contains 533 expert-reviewed QA pairs from 27 sources across 13 topics, and includes a proxy multiple-choice task to assess informativeness, along with two readability metrics: Flesch-Kincaid grade level and professional score. Evaluation of 25 LLMs reveals that most fail to meet readability standards, highlighting a gap between reasoning and effective communication. To address this, we explore four readability-enhancing strategies-standard prompting, chain-of-thought prompting, Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), and a token-adapted variant. Token-adapted GRPO achieves the best results, advancing the development of more practical and user-friendly public health agents. These results represent a step toward building more practical agents for public health.

On the Optimization of Benefit to Cost Ratios for Public Sector Decision Making

Decision making in the public sector centers on delivering resources and services for the common good, emphasizing an expansive set of objectives such as equity and efficiency, beyond immediate short term returns to reflect the broader cares of society and public beneficiaries. Cost-benefit analysis is a prevailing decision-making framework in the public sector that often uses the benefit to cost ratio (BCR) to compare viable alternatives, yet no systematic framework exists for evaluating many alternatives beyond the status quo of doing nothing. We propose a new framework to maximize the BCR for public sector decisions, seeking the largest improvement per marginal deployment of capacity. Requiring a status quo representable through (constrained) decision variables, the framework is generally applicable and useful to a broad set of decision contexts that involve maximizing the BCR for marginal deployments of resources. We demonstrate the applicability of our framework on a compelling case study for the New York City runaway and homeless youth shelter system, an area of high societal need. We represent this problem as a mixed integer linear fractional program (MILFP) and employ Dinkelbach's algorithm that converts the MILFP to a series of linearized mixed-integer optimization problems, making our approach tractable for fairly large problem instances. Our optimization-based algorithmic framework yields data-informed recommendations for making New York City shelter expansion decisions to better serve runaway and homeless youth, and generalizes to reveal managerial insights for optimizing the BCR. More broadly, our algorithmic decision making framework allows for iteration and comparison across multiple potential constraints ensuring action away from the status quo, thereby empowering effective assessment of marginal deployment of additional resources.

Opinion dynamics: Public and private

We study here the dynamics of opinion formation in a society where we take into account of the internally held beliefs and externally expressed opinions of the individuals, which are not necessarily the same at all times. While these two components can influence one another, their difference, both in dynamics and in the steady state, poses interesting scenarios in terms of the transition to consensus in the society and characterizations of such consensus. Here we study this public and private opinion dynamics and the critical behavior of the consensus forming transitions, using a kinetic exchange model.

Real-space nanoimaging of THz polaritons in the topological insulator Bi2Se3

Plasmon polaritons in topological insulators attract attention from a fundamental perspective and for potential THz photonic applications. Although polaritons have been observed by THz far-field spectroscopy on topological insulator microstructures, real-space imaging of propagating THz polaritons has been elusive so far. Here, we show spectroscopic THz near-field images of thin Bi2Se3 layers (prototypical topological insulators) revealing polaritons with up to 12 times increased momenta as compared to photons of the same energy and decay times of about 0.48 ps, yet short propagation lengths. From the images we determine and analyze the polariton dispersion, showing that the polaritons can be explained by the coupling of THz radiation to various combinations of Dirac and massive carriers at the Bi2Se3 surfaces, massive bulk carriers and optical phonons. Our work provides critical insights into the nature of THz polaritons in topological insulators and establishes instrumentation and methodology for imaging of THz polaritons.

Quantum Indistinguishability for Public Key Encryption

In this work we study the quantum security of public key encryption schemes (PKE). Boneh and Zhandry (CRYPTO'13) initiated this research area for PKE and symmetric key encryption (SKE), albeit restricted to a classical indistinguishability phase. Gagliardoni et al. (CRYPTO'16) advanced the study of quantum security by giving, for SKE, the first definition with a quantum indistinguishability phase. For PKE, on the other hand, no notion of quantum security with a quantum indistinguishability phase exists. Our main result is a novel quantum security notion (qIND-qCPA) for PKE with a quantum indistinguishability phase, which closes the aforementioned gap. We show a distinguishing attack against code-based schemes and against LWE-based schemes with certain parameters. We also show that the canonical hybrid PKE-SKE encryption construction is qIND-qCPA-secure, even if the underlying PKE scheme by itself is not. Finally, we classify quantum-resistant PKE schemes based on the applicability of our security notion. Our core idea follows the approach of Gagliardoni et al. by using so-called type-2 operators for encrypting the challenge message. At first glance, type-2 operators appear unnatural for PKE, as the canonical way of building them requires both the secret and the public key. However, we identify a class of PKE schemes - which we call recoverable - and show that for this class type-2 operators require merely the public key. Moreover, recoverable schemes allow to realise type-2 operators even if they suffer from decryption failures, which in general thwarts the reversibility mandated by type-2 operators. Our work reveals that many real-world quantum-resistant PKE schemes, including most NIST PQC candidates and the canonical hybrid construction, are indeed recoverable.

Experimenting Touchless Gestural Interaction for a University Public Web-based Display

Interest in and development of touchless gestural interfaces has recently exploded, fueled by the diffusion of both commercial midair gesture platforms and public interactive displays. This paper focuses on an application based on Microsoft Kinect that allows students to browse a university website, hosted on a public display, through simple gestures. We present two empirical evaluations where we evaluated how users react to this new way of interaction. In addition to confirming the current lack of standards, our results provide some inspiration for the design of touchless interaction.

Public Concern and the Financial Markets during the COVID-19 outbreak

We measure the public concern during the outbreak of COVID-19 disease using three data sources from Google Trends (YouTube, Google News, and Google Search). Our findings are three-fold. First, the public concern in Italy is found to be a driver of the concerns in other countries. Second, we document that Google Trends data for Italy better explains the stock index returns of France, Germany, Great Britain, the United States, and Spain with respect to their country-based indicators. Finally, we perform a time-varying analysis and identify that the most severe impacts in the financial markets occur at each step of the Italian lock-down process.

Comment on "Direct photodetachment of F$^-$ by mid-infrared few-cycle femtosecond laser pulses"

Multiphoton detachment of F$^-$ by strong few-cycle laser pulses was studied by Shearer and Monteith using a Keldysh-type approach [Phys. Rev. A 88, 033415 (2013)]. We believe that this work contained errors in the calculation of the detachment amplitude and photoelectron spectra. We describe the necessary corrections to the theory and show that the results, in particular, the interference features of the photoelectron spectra, appear noticeably different.

Trip-Based Public Transit Routing

We study the problem of computing all Pareto-optimal journeys in a public transit network regarding the two criteria of arrival time and number of transfers taken. We take a novel approach, focusing on trips and transfers between them, allowing fine-grained modeling. Our experiments on the metropolitan network of London show that the algorithm computes full 24-hour profiles in 70 ms after a preprocessing phase of 30 s, allowing fast queries in dynamic scenarios.

Investigation of the strongly correlated one-dimensional magnetic behavior of NiTa2O6

The magnetic properties of NiTa$_2$O$_6$ were investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electron paramagnetic resonance, neutron powder diffraction and pulse field magnetization measurements. Accompanying \textit{ab initio} DFT calculations of the spin-exchange constants complemented and supported our experimental findings that NiTa$_2$O$_6$ must be described as a quasi-1D Heisenberg $S$ = 1 spin chain system with a nearest-neighbor only anti-ferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction of 18.92(2) K. Inter-chain coupling is by about two orders of magnitude smaller. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on Mg$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Ta$_2$O$_6$ ($x \approx$ $1\%$) polycrystalline samples enabled us to estimate the single-ion zero-field splitting of the $S$ = 1 states which amounts to less than $4\%$ of the nearest-neighbor spin-exchange interaction. At 0 T NiTa$_2$O$_6$ undergoes long-range anti-ferromagnetic ordering at 10.3(1) K evidenced by a $λ$-type anomaly in the specific heat capacity. On application of a magnetic field the specific heat anomaly is smeared out. We confirmed the magnetic structure by neutron powder diffraction measurements and at 2.00(1) K refined a magnetic moment of 1.93(5) $μ_{\rm{B}}$ per Ni$^{2+}$ ion. Additionally, we followed the magnetic order parameter as a function of temperature. Lastly we found saturation of the magnetic moment at 55.5(5) T with a $g$-factor of 2.14(1), with an additional high field phase above 12.8(1) T. The onset of the new high field phase is not greatly effected by temperature, but rather smears out as one approaches the long-range ordering temperature.

We show that, under some general assumptions on the entries of a random complex $n \times n$ matrix $X_n$, the empirical spectral distribution of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} X_n$ converges to the uniform law of an ellipsoid as $n$ tends to infinity. This generalizes the well-known circular law in random matrix theory.

Evolution of cooperation in multilevel public goods games with community structures

In a community-structured population, public goods games (PGG) occur both within and between communities. Such type of PGG is referred as multilevel public goods games (MPGG). We propose a minimalist evolutionary model of the MPGG and analytically study the evolution of cooperation. We demonstrate that in the case of sufficiently large community size and community number, if the imitation strength within community is weak, i.e., an individual imitates another one in the same community almost randomly, cooperation as well as punishment are more abundant than defection in the long run; if the imitation strength between communities is strong, i.e., the more successful strategy in two individuals from distinct communities is always imitated, cooperation and punishment are also more abundant. However, when both of the two imitation intensities are strong, defection becomes the most abundant strategy in the population. Our model provides insight into the investigation of the large-scale cooperation in public social dilemma among contemporary communities.

Mapping Between Generalized Nonlinear Schroedinger Equations and Neutral Scalar Field Theories and New Solutions of the Cubic-Quintic NLS Equation

We highlight an interesting mapping between the moving breather solutions of the generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations and the static solutions of neutral scalar field theories. Using this connection, we then obtain several new moving breather solutions of the cubic-quintic NLS equation both with and without uniform phase in space. The stability of some stationary solutions is investigated numerically and the results confirmed via dynamical evolution.

Disentangling Social and Group heterogeneities: Public Goods games on Complex Networks

In this Letter we present a new perspective for the study of the Public Goods games on complex networks. The idea of our approach is to consider a realistic structure for the groups in which Public goods games are played. Instead of assuming that the social network of contacts self-defines a group structure with identical topological properties, we disentangle these two interaction patterns so to deal with systems having groups of definite sizes embedded in social networks with a tunable degree of heterogeneity. Surpisingly, this realistic framework, reveals that social heterogeneity may not foster cooperation depending on the game setting and the updating rule.

Public and private resource trade-offs for a quantum channel

Collins and Popescu realized a powerful analogy between several resources in classical and quantum information theory. The Collins-Popescu analogy states that public classical communication, private classical communication, and secret key interact with one another somewhat similarly to the way that classical communication, quantum communication, and entanglement interact. This paper discusses the information-theoretic treatment of this analogy for the case of noisy quantum channels. We determine a capacity region for a quantum channel interacting with the noiseless resources of public classical communication, private classical communication, and secret key. We then compare this region with the classical-quantum-entanglement region from our prior efforts and explicitly observe the information-theoretic consequences of the strong correlations in entanglement and the lack of a super-dense coding protocol in the public-private-secret-key setting. The region simplifies for several realistic, physically-motivated channels such as entanglement-breaking channels, Hadamard channels, and quantum erasure channels, and we are able to compute and plot the region for several examples of these channels.

Stable structures with high topological charge in nonlinear photonic quasicrystals

Stable vortices with topological charge of 3 and 4 are examined numerically and analytically in photonic quasicrystals created by interference of 5 as well as 8 beams, in the cases of cubic as well as saturable nonlinearities. These structures are experimentally realizable, including a prototypical example of a stable charge 4 vortex. Direct numerical simulations corroborate the analytical and numerical linear stability analysis predictions.
