Clinical Psychology of Religion: A Training Model

Marinus van Uden, Jos Pieper

In this paper we will show you a part of a course “Clinical Psychology of Religion” that has been developed in the Netherlands for introducing mental health professionals in the field of clinical psychology of religion. Clinical psychology of religion applies insights from general psychology of religion to the field of the clinical psychologist. Clinical psychology of religion can be defined as that part of the psychology of religion dealing with the relation between religion, worldview and mental health. Like the clinical psychologist, the clinical psychologist of religion deals with psychodiagnostics and psychotherapy, but concentrates on the role religion or worldview plays in mental health problems. The relation between religion and mental health has been a subject for study since the start of the psychology of religion at the end of the last century. A number of authors have elaborated on the ways in which religion can be beneficial or detrimental to psychological health. In recent research we have found that there is a great need among psychotherapists to become better equipped in this field.

The Value of Philosophy to Religion

The foundation a year or two ago of the British Institute of Philosophical Studies is an event of real importance in the intellectual life of our country. It is an indication of the widespread interest in ultimate problems which now exists, certainly wider than at any previous time; and it is a means of diffusing that interest more widely still. No doubt there is an almost universal tendency to distrust philosophical “systems” or ready-made interpretations of the universe; but there is a deep and wide concern about the problems with which philosophy is concerned, even if there is little expectation of satisfactory solutions. This state of affairs calls for special attention from those who are convinced of the supreme value of Religion for the guidance of life and the interpretation of the universe.

Religion, history, and philosophy

Andrew Briggs, Hans Halvorson, Andrew Steane

Abstract The chapter provides a survey of the distinction between religious and philosophical reflection, and commentary on ways that have been tried in the past of relating them to each other and to science. The word ‘religion’ itself requires definition; if different people adopt different definitions then they may, on this basis, find themselves engaged in unproductive disputes. Philosophy also can sometimes misconceive what theological discourse is. This is illustrated through reactions to Thomas Aquinas. The attempt to separate science and religion as a separation between facts and meaning, process and value (‘NOMA’), is considered. The attempt has some positive features, but ultimately fails. Deism is discussed as an historical experiment which also failed.
