A Multidimensional Analysis of Identity Construction Among University Youth: An Evaluation in the Context of Tradition, Modernization, and Belonging

İbrahim Akkaş

This study examines the multifaceted nature of identity attitudes among university students within the context of modernization and social transformation. Drawing on sociological approaches developed by Erik Erikson, Henri Tajfel, Pierre Bourdieu, Stuart Hall, and Anthony Giddens, identity is conceptualized as a dynamic and socially constructed process shaped by multiple forms of belonging, such as ethnicity, nation, religion, politics, and gender. The university environment is considered a critical social space where these dimensions of identity are negotiated and reproduced. The relationships between students’ demographic characteristics (such as gender, age, faculty, and academic year) and their identity attitudes were investigated. The study concluded that family and societal values play a significant role in shaping students’ identity perceptions, and that trends towards modernization and individualization also have a considerable impact on identity attitudes. The study found no statistically significant differences in identity attitudes based on variables such as gender, age, marital status, or faculty. However, a significant difference was found in terms of nationality and ethnicity. Overall, the findings indicate that students maintain traditional forms of belonging while simultaneously pursuing their individual identity quests.

Can We Mention About an Idea Called “Abstract Symbolic Style” in Turkish Art?

Yunus Aslan

Symbols play a crucial role in various domains, serving as conveyors of meaning through concrete signs with abstract significance. In some periods, it is seen that certain symbols stand out uniquely to that period and some symbols are used repeatedly or transformed throughout history. It is very difficult to reach definite conclusions about the origin of symbols in the history of art. However, the external and internal factors that influence the art, of course, shape the symbols that the work contains, as well as the work. A work of art, which is the product of a collective process is affected by many conditions such as the social environment, economy, material supply, geographical variables, the government, the wishes of the administrator and the artist, the understanding and style of art of the period, religion and sacred elements, the artist’s experience and inner world. The work, which is formed by selection among all these variables is a cornerstone of the general art style. Anatolian Medieval art can be interpreted as the art of societies, not the art of individuals like modern art. In this respect, in Turkish art and symbolism, where the state, religion and social powers come to the fore, these mentioned elements appear as the dominant and guiding power. Should the idea of “abstract symbolic style” be mentioned in Turkish art? Which factors influenced art and style? What is the place of stamps in the transformation of ancient symbols into art? In this study, answers to these questions and problems are sought.

What is engagement?

Balibar Etienne

This text explores the nuances of choice and consequence through the philosophical lenses of Pascal and Sartre. It contrasts Pascal’s transcendental faith-based approach with Sartre’s terrestrial decision-making, emphasizing the inherent paradox of engagement beginning before choice. It argues that authentic choice demands embracing the unknown and its extreme consequences, rejecting the spectator’s role for active participation. The text also examines the intellectual’s duality, caught between bourgeois origins and subaltern solidarity, and the antinomy of integrating science and revolution. It concludes with reflections on the intellectual’s role in revolutionary movements, highlighting the necessity of continuous critical engagement and the interplay of truth and error.

Towards Ecumenical Dialogue between African Pentecostalism and Roman Catholic

Mookgo Solomon Kgatle, Mokone Bruno Lephoto

There are undoubtedly differences between Roman Catholic and African Pentecostalism such as doctrinal issues and salvific conceptualisations. Besides non-Catholics, specifically Pentecostal churches have always been perceived as non-churches and lacking the real salvation by Roman Catholics. Thus, Roman Catholics have looked at Pentecostals with the eye of suspicion regardless of ecumenical efforts made to bring the two together. Similarly, Pentecostals have perceived Catholics as carrying a non-transformative doctrine, lacking the Spirit, and leaning towards political institutions and systems. Hence, the relationship between these two movements has been perceived as irreconcilable and incompatible with some leaders giving up on ecumenical engagements. However, a literature review on the relationship between Roman Catholic and African Pentecostalism reveals some similarities between the two movements through the ecumenical dialogue model. In other words, as much as the two movements do not see eye to eye, they have commonalities such as the use of sacramentals, common foundational beliefs, and salvation through Jesus. These similarities can be used as a starting point toward ecumenism and helping the two movements to move towards unity.

Rich Get Richer: Extraversion Statistically Predicts Reduced Internet Addiction through Less Online Anonymity Preference and Extraversion Compensation

Shaozhen Zhang, Wenliang Su, Xiaoli Han et al.

Internet addiction may arise from multiple factors and personality tendencies have been previously implicated. Prior studies have found that extraversion may be a protective factor mitigating against internet addiction, yielding a “rich-get-richer” effect. However, few studies have explored how extraversion may influence internet addiction from the perspective of online-offline integration. Drawing on a sample of 428 college students, the current study examined a serial mediation model exploring the underlying mechanisms of how extraversion may statistically predict internet addiction through online-offline integration and antecedent factors. The serial mediation model analyses indicated that extraverted internet users exhibited a weaker preference for online anonymity and less online extraversion compensation, thus formulating a higher level of online-offline integration than introverted individuals, which, in turn, appeared to reduce the risk of internet addiction. In contrast, with regard to specific components of online-offline integration, introverted internet users preferred online anonymity, which reduced their relationship integration and increased their likelihood of internet addiction; similarly, the introverted individuals were also more likely to exhibit an extraversion compensation effect. That is, they were more extraverted on the internet than in general; hence, they had a lower level of self-identity integration, resulting in a greater likelihood of experiencing internet addiction. These results highlight the importance of online-offline integration that may account for personality variations in social and psychological outcomes related to internet use, and suggest a role for online anonymity preference and extraversion compensation in influencing specific components of integration.

JÓZEF MARIA BOCHEŃSKI’S FORMAL ANALYSIS OF THE PRIMA VIA FROM 1953

MAREK PORWOLIK

Abstract J.M. Bocheński (1902-1995) together with J. Salamucha, B. Sobociński, and J.F. Drewnowski formed the so-called Cracow Circle in the 30s of the previous century. Its main aim was to utilize contemporary logic in theology and philosophy of God. The first work in this area was Salamucha’s formal analysis of the prima via, published in 1934. The article was reviewed by Bocheński, who provided a number of remarks concerning Salamucha’s analysis. At that time he did not decide to conduct a holistic research into the prima via. That was done by him only at the end of his life as part of the logical analysis of the quinque viae. This paper aims at presenting Bocheński’s unpublished formal analysis of the prima via from 1953 and proving that it constitutes a valuable completion of his published formal analyses, which come from the 1980s and 1990s. Above all, they provide a more insightful analysis of the notion of movement in the prima via, as well as the form of axiom expressing the lack of regress into infinity. In the formalizations of 1953 there are also interesting analyses concerning the ancestral closure of three-argument relations.

A competency-based approach: training specialists with higher education in Kazakhstan

G. G. Ismukhanova, A. R. Sansyzbayeva

This article provides a theoretical analysis of the scientific literature on the issue of competence, on the basis of which are provided definitions and applications of the terms competency, competence, competitive, qualification, experience, ability, and skill, including the concept of hard skills and soft skills. The theoretical foundation of the article is based on the scientific developments of international, Russian, and Kazakhstani scientists who have studied workforce preparation and the transitioning from a «qualification-based» approach to a «competency-based» model of education. The issue is a timely one, due to the need to produce competitive and competent specialists in the context of current forms in Kazakhstan’s higher education system. The primary benefit of adopting a competency-based model is meeting the needs of the labor market while providing jobs for new graduates. This article describes key opportunities, recommendations, and principles for the development of professional competence, including criteria and indicators for professional competency develop-ment among students, the personalization of education, and the development of cre-ative abilities. The primary objective of this article is to provide a theoretical basis for the grad-ual adoption of a competency-based model in the Kazakhstan’s higher education system. The development of a competency-based model in the national context will contribute to the success of further modernization of the higher education system as the central link to the national economy. At this stage, the authors have focused on competencies and competent undergraduates, graduates, and PhD students. The ar-ticle includes significant discussion of the opportunity to establish evaluation criteria for the professional competence of students based on the competence ladder, which broadens the function of the educational system as a three-sided process, with par-ties connected through both vertical and horizontal relationships. The future marker of students’ professional competence will be their ability to create new knowledge, characterized as creative conscious competence, expanding on the traditional five levels of competence which limit the process of acquiring competencies to learning from a teacher and mentor. Returning science to the university will contribute to the integration of specialists into international projects. This will in turn allow them to independently develop their own areas of study and schools, capable of collaborat-ing with international partners and universities. The conclusion considers key approaches for adopting and piloting a compe-tency-based model in the system of higher education in Kazakhstan.

Historia de las ciencias en la enseñanza de las ciencias

The law of the leading digits and the world religions

Tariq Ahmad Mir

Benford’s law states that the occurrence of significant digits in many data sets is not uniform but tends to follow a logarithmic distribution such that the smaller digits appear as first significant digits more frequently than the larger ones. We investigate here numerical data on the country-wise adherent distribution of seven major world religions i.e. Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Baha’ism to see if the proportion of the leading digits occurring in the distribution conforms to Benford’s law. We find that the adherent data of all the religions, except Christianity, excellently does conform to Benford’s law. Furthermore, unlike the adherent data on Christianity, the significant digit distribution of the three major Christian denominations i.e. Catholicism, Protestantism and Orthodoxy obeys the law. Thus in spite of their complexity general laws can be established for the evolution of religious groups.
