Effects of Aerobic Versus Resisted Intradialytic Exercises on Quality of Life, Pain, and Physiological Outcomes in Chronic Kidney Disease

Rania Nagy Karkousha, Amira Hussin Draz, Nesreen Gharib ElNahas et al.

Purpose: Exercise improves various health outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease, but the impact of different types of exercise on chronic kidney disease patients undergoing dialysis is not well understood. This aimed to comparatively assess the impact of intradialytic resistance and aerobic exercises on urea reduction rate concentration and various quality of life dimensions in chronic kidney disease patients. Methods: In this single-blinded, randomized controlled trial with a pre-and post-test design, 30 patients (both sexes, aged 25-35 years, BMI 18-25 kg/m²) diagnosed with stage 4 chronic kidney disease  and stable on dialysis for a minimum of 2 months were enrolled. Patients were randomly assigned equally to either the resistance exercise group or the aerobic exercise group and underwent respective exercise interventions for 8 weeks. Urea reduction rate and quality of life dimensions were evaluated before and after the intervention period. Results: Both resistance and aerobic exercise modalities significantly changed urea reduction rate and quality of life dimensions in chronic kidney disease patients (p<0.05). No significant difference in post-intervention urea reduction rate levels (mg/dL) was observed between the groups (resistance group = 89.43 ± 14.29; aerobic group = 86.33 ± 14.75; p=0.563). Furthermore, all quality of life dimensions exhibited significant differences between the groups, except for physical function. The aerobic group exhibited superior general health outcomes compared to the resistance exercise group (mean = 59.98 ± 0.96 versus 56.26 ± 0.95) following the intervention. Conclusion:  Aerobic exercise showed better general health outcomes, though both modalities improved Urea reduction rate and quality of life. Integrating intradialytic exercise enhances patient wellbeing. Trial Registration: The study was retrospectively registered on the Pan African Clinical Trials Registry under registration number PACTR202112710463704.

The Efficacy of Lumbar Traction versus Spinal Mobilization with Leg Movement in Patients with Lumbar Radiculopathy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Mohamed Hussein ElGendy, Islam Tarek Abuemira, Ali Muhammad Al-Guyoushi et al.

Background and Purpose Spinal mobilization with leg movement and lumbar traction are individually recognized as evidence-based treatments for lumbar radiculopathy. However, previous studies have not compared these two modalities directly. This study aimed to compare the effects of lumbar traction versus spinal mobilization with leg movement on pain, range of motion, and disability in adults with lumbar radiculopathy. Materials and Methods In this randomized controlled trial, (n=60) patients diagnosed with lumbar radiculopathy by their orthopedist participated in this study. They were randomly divided into three groups: Experimental group (a) consisted of 20 patients who received LT and conventional treatment; Experimental group (b) consisted of 20 patients who received spinal mobilization with leg movement and conventional treatment; Control group (c) consisted of 20 patients who received only conventional treatment (ultrasound therapy, hot packs, and core stability exercises). Interventions were conducted over 12 sessions (3 sessions per week) across four weeks. Outcomes were assessed at the start and end of the fourth week using a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity, the Oswestry Disability Index for functional disability, and a back range of motion (BROM) device to measure lumbar spine flexion and extension. Results All groups showed significant improvement post-treatment compared to pre-treatment (P<0.05) across all measured variables. Group analysis revealed significant differences among the three groups in visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index scores (P=0.001), with groups A and B showing greater improvement than group C. However, there were no significant differences between the groups in back range of motion measurements (P>0.05). Conclusion Both spinal mobilization with leg movement and lumbar traction were effective in managing patients with lumbar radiculopathy. However, there was no significant difference in effectiveness between the two treatments.

Donária Coelho Duarte, Kezya Silva Coelho Lima

Measuring and analysing standardisation in the Hungarian hotel sector

Petra Gyurácz-Németh

In tourism and the hotel sector standardisation is sometimes an advantage and other times a disadvantage, though it has been mentioned several times. This research explores the topic of standardisation in the Hungarian hotels. The paper determines the level of standardisation in hotels and the extant of the relationship between the level of standardisation and the hotel affiliation, the Hotelstars Union membership, the number of rooms and the star rating. There are 81 questionnaires filled out by hotel general managers of those hotels which belong to the Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association. Only the three-, four- and five-star hotels were questioned by this survey. The results show that the level of hotel standardisation depends on the hotel chain membership but only weakly by 5%. There are also proven significant relationships with the Hotelstars Union membership, the number of rooms and the star rating of the hotels

Destination image on the DMO's platforms: official website and social media

Sebastian Molinillo, Francisco Liébana-Cabanillas, Rafael Anaya-Sánchez

Tourists usually configure and develop ideas about possible destinations based on information previously gathered from both social media and the official web of the destination management organization (DMO). In spite of the relevance of said information sources, there have not been many studies evaluating how these different sources influence the destination image. This research proposes a model intended to explain the image creation process of a destination taking into account both the DMO’s online platforms and the perceived psychological distance. The proposed model is tested with an empirical study including a questionnaire which collects data from 264 participants. The validity of the model is reviewed through PLS analysis. Results show that the psychological distance does not influence the overall destination image. In addition, the overall destination image can be estimated to a larger extent when tourists approach social media as their main source of information. Implications and conclusions are discussed.

La Trans-disciplinariedad en los Estudios Turísticos.

Maximiliano E. Korstanje

Challenges ahead for Bulgarian’s competitiveness as a mountain tourism destination

Mariya Stankova

A re-examination of the concept of tourism reveals new dimensions and draws specialists’ attention to its multi-directional social influences. Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy, fostering economic development worldwide. It is recognised that tourism must be developed and managed in a controlled, integrated and sustainable manner. With a joint effort, an attempt could be made to realise objectives like improvement of quality, competiveness and sustainability of tourism products offered regardless of the particular scale – national, regional, or international – by “pursuing” tourists’ needs. However, this paper is focused on the priority given to the tourism industry in the economic development of the Republic of Bulgaria in bid to position the country well on the international level of competitiveness. This necessitates research on the opportunities of tourism and the economy of Bulgaria to help attain the competitiveness within the context of sustainable development.
