Rethinking Scholarly Digital Objects as Cultural Heritage: the KNOT Project

The KNOT project is a three-year pilot tasked with investigating ways to integrate the digital cultural heritage (DCH) of Italian universities within the national infrastructure being developed by the Ministry of Culture. To do this, KNOT argues for rethinking the digital objects produced by academic research projects as interesting and, so far, unexplored examples of this DCH deserving of more attention and worthy of integration into the national infrastructure. This article discusses the key steps in the development of a conceptual framework in support of this argument starting with 1) the definition of these objects and identification of the potential heritage values they hold, 2) the selection of the humanities, and in particular the digital humanities, as the academic field from which to select them, 3) the development and publication of a data model and catalogue, and 4) some of the key issues that arose during this work around the classification, documentation, and visibility of these objects.

The Role of Andragogy Strategies in Enhancing Lifelong Learning in Community Education

The role of andragogy strategies in enhancing lifelong learning in community education is increasingly recognized as critical in today’s rapidly changing society. This study aims to explore the impact and effectiveness of andragogical approaches in fostering lifelong learning within community education settings. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this research employs a comprehensive literature review (library research) to analyze existing studies and theoretical frameworks related to adult learning. The study focuses on key andragogical principles, including learner self-direction, experiential learning, readiness to learn, and the role of motivation in adult education. Findings indicate that effective application of andragogical strategies significantly enhances learner engagement, autonomy, and practical knowledge application, thereby promoting continuous learning beyond formal education. The study also highlights challenges, such as varying levels of digital literacy and diverse learning motivations, which must be addressed to optimize andragogical approaches. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of adaptive teaching methods and supportive learning environments that align with adult learners' unique needs and life experiences, ultimately contributing to more resilient and informed communities. Future research should focus on integrating digital tools and personalized learning pathways to further enhance adult learning outcomes in community settings.

Exploring the Representation of Women in Technical Roles at a South African Performing Arts Entity

Low levels of female representation are found when it comes to technical roles within the South African performing arts industry despite improved numbers in the overall representation of females within the industry across different occupational categories. Employment in the core functions of the performing arts entities is therefore still predominantly male. The research aimed to explore the representation of women in a performing arts entity. The feminist, social dominance and patriarchy theories were used to conceptualize the research phenomena and interrogate the findings in this study. The research adopted a qualitative case study approach, using one-on-one in-depth interviews. The sample of participants included management and employees in the technical business unit, selected through convenience sampling and a complementary snowball sampling technique. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data, which engendered themes and sub-themes, substantiated by verbatim quotes from the interviews. Although the research findings indicated an unequal representation of females in technical roles and their absence in management positions within the entity, female presence was found to enhance teamwork and diverse views, which consequently improved team performance. The study found that barriers to female representation include unequal gender representation, the nature of work, and the work-life balance. The study established policy recommendations for the industry, including flexible-hour strategies and childcare facilities, among others.

The Effectiveness of Youtube Channel as Learning Media at Conversation Class

This study aimed to figure out how effective the use of Youtube as a learning media in teaching English for conversation class. The method of the study used was descriptive qualitative. The use of Youtube was considered as a good media to use for teaching English because by Youtube, an English lecturer or teacher can download many interesting videos to present at class. The use of Youtube was also able to avoid the boringness that often comes to the students when learning English. It was proved by the result of this study which revealed that 84% of the students extremely agreed using Youtube as the learning source and media. And 16% of the students agreed using Youtube and considered Youtube as interesting learning source. So, it was concluded that the videos downloaded from Youtube was effective to use in teaching English particularly for speaking

2. Mapping Digital Humanities at Western Sydney University

This chapter discusses efforts to build research capacity in Digital Humanities at Western Sydney University. Western Sydney University is a particularly appropriate subject for such a study because it was the site of the first Chair and earliest formally constituted research cluster in its field in Australia. The chapter charts the challenges, triumphs and disappointments of the university’s Digital Humanities Research Group from formation to maturity, as the group has sought to establish financial stability whilst nurturing an emerging and diverse group of digitally empowered projects. In particular, it focuses on how the group’s leadership has leveraged conferencing, training and networking to build trajectory, reputation and velocity, and has strategically targeted seed-corn funding to support emerging Digital Humanities scholars. It also explores how my own award winning and, by the standards of the field, positively venerable, project on the ‘French Book Trade in Enlightenment Europe’ has drawn on and developed the expertise and activities of colleagues, stakeholders and external collaborators, to bring training, research and funding opportunities to group members and students, and embed us in an ecosystem of ‘like-minded projects’. In these ways, it is hoped that the Digital Humanities Research Group might be viewed as a living laboratory, and its experience serve as a guide to the perils and opportunities inherent in developing Digital Humanities.

Inferring links in directed complex networks through feed forward loop motifs

Abstract Complex networks are mathematical abstractions of real-world systems using sets of nodes and edges representing the entities and their interactions. Prediction of unknown interactions in such networks is a problem of interest in biology, sociology, physics, engineering, etc. Most complex networks exhibit the recurrence of subnetworks, called network motifs. Within the realm of social science, link prediction (LP) models are employed to model opinions, trust, privacy, rumor spreading in social media, academic and corporate collaborations, liaisons among lawbreakers, and human mobility resulting in contagion. We present an LP metric based on a motif in directed complex networks, called feed-forward loop (FFL). Unlike nearest neighbor-based metrics and machine learning-based techniques that gauge the likelihood of a link based on node similarity, the proposed approach leverages a known dichotomy in the motif distribution of directed networks. Complex networks are sparse, causing most nodes and their associated links to have low motif participation. Yet, due to intrinsic network motif-richness, few links participate in many distinct motif substructures. Thus, the FFL-based metric combines the presence and absence of motifs as a signature to outperform baseline metrics on ten directed social and biological network datasets. We conclude with the future of the FFL-based metric in dynamic network inference as well as its use in designing combined metrics using network motifs of varying orders as features.

محددات تدفق الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر دراسة قياسية تحليلية لعينة من الدول النامية للمدة (1996-2020)

تهدف هذه الدراسة الى قياس العوامل المحددة للإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر في الدول النامية ذات الدخل المتوسط الاعلى ضمن تصنيفات الدخل للبنك الدولي وتشمل خمسة دول وهي (المكسيك, البرازيل, ماليزيا, رومانيا والصين) للمدة 1996-2020. ولغرض التعرف على اهم عوامل جذب هذا النوع من الاستثمار في هذه الدول إعتمدت الدراسة على الأسلوب الكمي بإستخدام نموذج الإنحدار الذاتي للإبطاء الموزع والمتعلق بمعطيات بيانات البانل المتوازنة (Panel-ARDL) وذلك لتقدير معلمات تلك العوامل المحددة تدفق الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر على المديين القصير والطويل والمتمثلة في كل من (معدل نمو الناتج المحلي الإجمالي, الاستقرار السياسي, إجمالي تكوين رأس المال, معدل التضخم وسعر الصرف). وتبين من نتائج الدراسة بأنه على المدى القصير لا يوجد تأثير معنوي ذو دلالة احصائية بين الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر والمتغيرات المفسرة له, أما نتائج التقدير على المدى الطويل لقد أظهرت علاقة إيجابية ذات تأثير معنوي بين الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر وكل من معدل نمو الناتج المحلي الإجمالي والاستقرار السياسي وإجمالي تكوين رأس المال في دول عينة الدراسة خلال المدة التي غطتها الدراسة. اما المتغيرات التي أثرت بشكل سلبي على الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر فهما كل من متغير سعر الصرف ومعدل التضخم, فالأول كان ذات تأثير سلبي ومعنوي أما الثاني فكان ذو اثر سلبي ولكن غير معنوي, وكان متغير معدل نمو الناتج المحلي الاجمالي هو الأكثر تأثيرا في جذب الإستثمار الأجنبي المباشر, وتقترح الدراسة بأنه على دول الدراسة ان تواصل خطواتها في إطار المحافظة على الاستقرار الإقتصادي, وإعداد خطة إستثمارية شاملة وواقعية لجميع الفرص الاستثمارية, وكذلك العمل على إستقرار الأوضاع السياسية والتي تعد من العوامل المهمة في تحقيق الحجم المرغوب لتدفق رؤوس الأموال الأجنبية في دول الدراسة.

Keep that mask on: will Germans become more like East Asians?

Abstract We study planned changes in protective routines after the COVID-19 pandemic: in a survey in Germany among >650 respondents, we find that the majority plans to use face masks in certain situations even after the end of the pandemic. We observe that this willingness is strongly related to the perception that there is something to be learned from East Asians’ handling of pandemics, even when controlling for perceived protection by wearing masks. Given strong empirical evidence that face masks help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases and given the considerable estimated health and economic costs of such diseases even pre-Corona, this would be a very positive side effect of the current crisis.

Dialectical democracy: Indian Muslims and the politics of resistance

Majoritarian regimes use perfectly legal and democratically uncensurable strategies to subordinate dissenters and unpopular minorities with the consent of their electorally significant mass of supporters. The anxieties ensuing from democratic subordination can be mitigated only through democratically workable participative cultural productions, the Hegelian concept of Bildung of the subordinated, recognised as legitimate by civil society and as uncensurable by the majoritarian state. Employing the illustrative case of Indian Muslims and Hegel’s master-servant dialectic, this paper argues that the fragile essence of democracy itself must be understood in terms of the dialectical relation between the citizen’s particularities and the state’s universality.

يعتبر التقليد بعد القرآن الكريم من أكثر الوثائق موثوقية لتقديم الشعائر الإسلامية و أبوهريرة من أكثر الشخصيات التي اقتسبت من أحاديث رسول الله () في بداية الإسلام لقد تركه من خمسة آلاف و سبعمائة حديث تعرض لإنتقادات شديدة و معارضة من زوايا مختلفة منذ الأيام الأولي. بسبب قلة الوعي و سطحية الناس إنتشرت أحاديث أبي هريرة بسرعة بين الناس و تغلغلت في كتب التفسير و الدين و التأريخ و قد أدت هذه الأحاديث الجعلية إلي آثار سلبية علي بعض المعتقدات و القضايا السياسية و الإجتماعية و الثقافية. نعتزم في هذا المقال أستخدام أسلوب تحليلي لمقارنة مصداقية أبوهريرة من وجهة نظر شرف الدين عاملي و محمود أبوريه و من معايير هاتين الشخصيتين، عدم معارضة القرآن و التقاليد المحددة و العقل و عدم معارضة ما يقره العلم و سننظر في هذه الحالات من أجل التقييم الكمي و النوعي لأحاديث أبي هريرة لتوضيح حقيقة هذا الراوي. أجري هذا البحث بالمنهج الوصفي التحليلي و أدوات الدراسة المكتبية.

How has the invention of printing press influenced the Russian icon painting? Printed icons in Russia at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries

The purpose of this article is to comprehensively present a “printed icon”, such characteristic phenomenon of Russia at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The article indicates origins and typical features of this phenomenon, analyses the main stages of its development. The author tries to point out the reasons for the special popularity of “printed icons”. The article also describes the criticism of the Russian intelligentsia against “printed icons”.

THE DISCUSSION ON THE ADMINISTRATIVE CENTER OF MYASNIKOVSKY DISTRICT (1920s)

The article discusses the status of the city of Nakh-ichevan-on-Don. The city was founded by the Crimean Armenians in 1779, and in 1926-1928 it was the administrative center of the Armenian Myasnikovsky district. No single national district in the South of Russia had an administrative center in the city. Proclamation of Nakhichevan as the administrative center of the district enjoyed support among not only local officials and members of their families but the public at large, as they believed it conveyed deep national meaning. The leaders of the region and the district pursued a different goal. Having proclaimed Nakhichevan the center of the district, they tried to prevent the supporters of the Gadzievs clan that used to hold leading official positions in the district from regaining them. It was planned to relocate the center to Chaltyr or the Crimea as soon as Gadzievs's influence was eliminated. The author shows that in the year following the creation of Myasnikovsky district the higher management began to exert pressure on the Armenian authorities with the aim of making their own decisions about the transfer of the center of New Na-khchivan in one of large villages. In the discussion on the status of Nakhichevan as a district centre the fate of the city was under question. Without the consent of indigenous Armenian population of the Don, in 1928 the Central district of Nakhichevan was moved to the village of Crimea, and then to Chaltyr. In the same year, Nakhichevan was annexed to the city of Rostov-on-Don.

After more than forty years of organised and institutionalised philosophy of sport, the establishment of Philosophic Society for the Study of Sport (PSSS) in 1972 (today International Association for the Philosophy of Sport – IAPS), and several pioneering symposiums the same year (Munich, Brockport New York, Ontario, and again New York), the discipline deserved its first broad overview edition. Mike McNamee and Bill Morgan, two of the most prominent, distinguished and influential scholars in the field, carriers and promoters of the discipline and its academic strivings, not only in Great Britain (McNamee) and North America (Morgan), but in global terms as well, are the most obvious and in fact unerring choice for being an editors of this edition. I assume that every scholar dealing with sportphilosophy has welcomed this unique edition with acclamation. It is a requisite introspection of the discipline,seeming to have a crucial role in the further development of the discipline for several reasons.

Resumen Dada la actual crisis en formación general humanista en las universidades públi[1]cas, región Junín, habría que preguntarse ¿Cómo se desarrolla la formación general humanista en universidades públicas para incrementar eficientes interrelaciones personales y sociales en la población? El propósito es conocer, la formación general humanista en universidades públicas para incrementar eficientes interrelaciones personales y sociales en la población. Se hace una reflexión en torno a, si la formación general humanista es integral; entonces se logra incrementar eficientes interrelaciones personales y sociales en la población. Se aborda puntualmente la formación en conocimientos y profesional. Por lo que, un estudiante universitario, formado fundamentalmente solo en los saberes de su propia especialidad, posee una idea limitada de los fenómenos sociales y una visión empobrecida de la experiencia humana. Abstract Once the present-day crisis in general formation was given humanist at the public universities region Junín, would he be necessary to ask itself as the humanist at public universities to increment efficient personal and social interrelations in the population develops the general formation? The purpose is to know, the general formation humanist al public universities to increment efficient personal and social interrelations in the population. The formation in knowledge and professional are approached punctually. Espaço do Ensino na Formação Docente

O sistema de ensino enfrenta diversos problemas quanto ao seu desempenho, seja pelo grande número de abandonos, reprovações ou mesmo pelas aprovações na qual os alunos não aprendem o mínimo esperado. Logo, percebe-se que a formação inicial de professores pode desempenhar um papel preponderante nesta mudança, e que o ensinar a ensinar é parte importante na fundamentação teórica desta formação. Por esse motivo este trabalho tem o objetivo de investigar as publicações que abordem como as teorias de ensino estão sendo trabalhadas em cursos de licenciaturas em universidades públicas do Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se uma busca, na Scielo, que não recuperou artigos, e no Google Acadêmico que recuperou 74 artigos. Em ambas as buscas foram utilizada a expressão: “teorias de ensino” AND “curso de licenciatura” AND “universidade pública”. Após refinamento da busca, foram selecionados seis artigos, que posteriormente foram analisados através da Análise de Conteúdo. Da análise emergiram duas categorias: Espaço do ensino nos currículos de licenciatura, que aborda o ensino das disciplinas de didática e psicologia da educação em universidades; e Formação de professores, que aborda a formação de professores em diferentes licenciaturas. Através desse estudo, conclui-se que, apesar da importância do tema, há uma carência de publicações que tratem sobre as teorias de ensino nos cursos de licenciatura.

Simulations and difficult problems

AbstractAn authorship attribution investigation ideally begins with a well-defined set of possible authors and an adequate number of firmly attributed roughly contemporaneous long texts in the same genre by those authors. Many significant or intriguing problems, however, suffer from deficiencies or limitations that reduce the effectiveness or validity of some kinds of analysis and make others impossible. These problematic situations can be approached by creating simulations that are designed to overcome or mitigate the difficulties of the problems. The results of the simulations can be used to suggest at least tentative solutions. Here, simulations are used to investigate four difficult problems. One involves fewer and shorter texts than would be ideal–texts that are also chronologically earlier than the known texts by the target author. The second involves too small a number of well attributed texts by the authors in question, and initial uncertainty about the genres of the texts, the number of authors involved, and their genders. The third is a tricky case of co-authorship with only relatively vague and uncertain evidence about the nature and extent of each author’s contribution; here simulations with sections of well-attributed texts by the two authors are used to test Rolling Classify. The fourth addresses the sparsity of well-attributed and confidently-dated Early Modern plays, using simulations to evaluate Brian Vickers’ rare n-gram approach to the attribution of such plays.
