The Concept of “Volia” in the Modern Ukrainian Language: A Corpus-Based Approach to the Analysis of Conceptual Content

Olena Levchenko, Nataliia Romanyshyn

This paper presents a corpus-based research on the concept of “volia” in modern Ukrainian language. It focuses on dynamic changes of the concept of “volia” within the context of social, political, and historical transformations of Ukrainian society in the 20th and 21st centuries. The study examines the processes of concept’s metaphorization and shifts in the semantics of concept’s verbalizers. The research utilizes the General Regionally Annotated Corpus of the Ukrainian Language (GRAC) as its empirical foundation. This analysis reveals correlations between the type of context and the concept’s frequency, displaying specific conceptual senses across different periods. Additionally, the study examines the concept’s synonymous verbalizers, including their distribution and rating position within chronological corpora. This allows us to trace tendencies in the dynamics of conceptualization. Six conceptual profiles of the “volia” concept are identified. Concordance and collocation analysis offer insights into the combinability of “volia” and its synonyms within each profile. This approach helps identify core cognitive features of the concept and highlight the specific ways in which the content of the concept has developed. Ultimately, these findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the corpus-based approach in revealing the dynamic nature of the concept’s semantics and its susceptibility to discourse influences.

Using life and death education to guide the teaching and research of mindfulness

Huy P. Phan, Bing Hiong Ngu, Si-Chi Chen et al.

Our teaching and research undertakings, facilitated by extensive international collaboration and networking, have led us to recently proposed an alternative conceptualization of mindfulness. For example, mindfulness has been predominantly interpreted through a psychological lens, often defined as an individual's capacity to be non-judgmental in the present moment. This perspective, we acknowledge, is limited as it fails to acknowledge and/or take into account the broader philosophical and spiritual dimensions of mindfulness. Our reconceptualization largely coincides with the principles of life and death education teaching, which delve into the humanistic nature of life. Life and death education encourages introspection into humanistic pursuits, such as the aspiration to achieve altruistic life ideals (e.g., a teenager's wish to help others). Such personal practices, we contend, may resonate with the deeper philosophical and spiritual teachings of mindfulness, which emphasize the importance of kindness, generosity, compassion, and similar values. Our conceptualization, as discussed in the present theoretical-conceptual article, proposes a reciprocal relationship between mindfulness and life and death education. We argue that life and death education may provide theoretical grounding to complement the teaching of mindfulness and, likewise, the nature of mindfulness may facilitate a deeper engagement with the principles taught in life and death education. Furthermore, in its current stage of development, our theoretical-conceptual premise remains formative, grounded primarily in philosophical analysis and preliminary integrative teaching practices. While conceptually promising, we recognize the present limitations in empirical validation. Accordingly, this article is intended to serve as a foundational platform to stimulate scholarly discourse and guide future lines of inquiry, including empirical examination and curriculum development. We posit that the integration of mindfulness with life and death education holds considerable potential—not only for advancing academic scholarship but also for fostering individual wellbeing, spiritual insight, and the cultivation of humanistic life ideals.

Dil, Söylem Ve İdeoloji Perspektifinden ‘Yoksul’ Filminin Eleştirisi

Burak Duman, Yusuf Devran

Populism, familialism, and borders: the interplay of family and anti-Muslim immigration policies in Hungary

Katinka Linnamäki

Immigration and the defense of national borders have played a vital role in European right-wing populist discourses since the European border crisis in 2015. Western European populist anti-immigration policies are often intertwined with gender politics (as in femonationalism and homonationalism). Research on Central and Eastern Europe offers the opportunity to examine the relationship between populist, “illiberal” family mainstreaming and anti-immigration policies. The aim of this article is to fill a gap in literature, addressing a direct connection between the Hungarian government’s family politics and anti-Muslim immigration policies. How has an ideological understanding of “family” legitimated the Hungarian government’s border politics since 2015? This question is addressed using qualitative content analysis and framing analysis to examine government material dated 2015–2023 (Modifications of the Fundamental Law, National Consultations, and material related to the Budapest Demographic Summit). The article demonstrates how border politics are informed and legitimated by discourses around Christian “families.” An antagonism between “illiberal” family policies and “liberal” immigration policies is forged around two discursive frames: economics and human rights. According to the government, pro-immigration border policies threaten the sustainability of its family policies—and indirectly the Hungarian “families” —as both are fighting for finite economic resources. Besides, it is argued that mass Muslim immigration threatens Hungary’s national self-identity, which is strongly rooted in Christianity and familialism. The results suggest that family politics, beyond serving as a biopolitical tool, provide an ideological platform on which nationalism, populism, and illiberalism are effectively merged as the foundation of the Hungarian government’s “illiberal” politics. In its ideological sense, “family” acts as a signifier for the “illiberal” political community. In this context, immigration is framed not solely as a biopolitical threat, but is used by the Hungarian government to discursively constitute a frontier of “us.” This frontier is primarily drawn between “us” and the European Union’s pro-immigration policies, and only indirectly between “us” and the immigrants themselves.

News sites and documenting media bias through photography During the Al-Aqsa Flood October 7, 202

Nassira DJEGHRI ZAROUTA

Abstract: The study raises the issue of documenting news sites for media bias through photographs that embody the Al-Aqsa flood that struck and deepened the moral and material tragedies and wounds of the Palestinians due to the occupier who disregarded all humanitarian treaties and conventions. It became clear to us after thorough analysis that the levels of this bias vary, shifting between supports and fine-tuning in visions between the East and the West. The results also confirmed that media images could be decisive in conveying geopolitical trends, conflicts, and global blocs. Undoubtedly, the current study is trying hard to stand on the representations of bias in the dealing.  Keywords: Al-Aqsa flood; news sites; media bias; photograph; geopolitical discourse

Communication monitoring as a politeness mechanism

Olga A. Leontovich, Anna V. Nikitina

The notion of politeness is closely connected with communication control as one of its important mechanisms, which, however, has not been thoroughly researched in academic literature. In the present paper, we view this mechanism through the prism of communication monitoring, defined as a social negotiation instrument aimed at the speaker’s self-control and regulation of other people’s verbal and nonverbal behaviour. The study employs a complex of qualitative methods including observation, definition analysis, discourse analysis and introspection. Drawing upon the data of over 1500 communicative situations in English and Russian, we distinguish the prognostic, diagnostic, regulative, corrective, and reflexive functions of monitoring, as well as the function of conflict resolution. The connection between monitoring and politeness is determined by the existence of social constraints and the necessity to observe established rules and norms. The presence of multiple communication variables makes it possible to distinguish different types of monitoring: (i) horizontal vs. vertical monitoring; (ii) self-monitoring vs. monitoring of others; (iii) verbal vs. nonverbal monitoring; (iv) oral vs. written monitoring; (v) explicit vs. implicit monitoring; (vi) pre-monitoring vs. concurrent monitoring vs. post-monitoring; (vii) direct vs. mediated monitoring; and (viii) overt vs. covert monitoring. (Im)politeness is manifested in all the types through the choice of words and communication strategies, observance or violation of conversational rules, and different forms of nonverbal behaviour. These findings can lead to their practical application and help to enhance the effectiveness and quality of human interaction.

Introduction to Multimodal Analysis

D. Machin

Introduction to Multimodal Analysis is a unique and accessible textbook that clearly and critically explains this groundbreaking approach to visual analysis. Each chapter outlines the tools for analysis and takes the reader through examples of analysis, providing a model that can then be followed. All visual media compositions, such as photographs, advertisements, newspapers and websites, are carefully designed. A photograph of a soldier, an advertisement for a car, a magazine cover or the opening titles to a news programme are thought out to create the appropriate effect. Designers use semiotic tools such as colour, framing, focus, positioning of elements and font style to communicate with the viewer. These choices make up a visual language that we can analyse. Multimodal analysis looks at the separate components of this language to build up a toolkit for analysing the grammar of visual design. The book includes an assessment of the claim that there is a visual grammar and important differences between images and language and the way they create meaning are identified. Including images throughout and a colour plate section, Introduction to Multimodal Analysis is an essential resource for students studying multimodality within visual communication in media and cultural studies, critical discourse analysis, journalism studies or linguistics.

Vocabulary to speak about touch: analysis of the discourse of electric guitar players

Cambourian Paul, Paté Arthur, Cance Caroline et al.

This work presents a multidisciplinary approach to vibrotactile perception, applying linguistic methods to musical acoustics. We are interested more particularly in the sense of touch as a part of the multisensory experience of playing a musical instrument. Six words and their inflections are chosen from the literature in musical acoustics dealing with vibrotactile perception: “comfort”, “dynamics”, “response”, “feeling”, “touch” and “vibration”. Their use by musicians in playing situation is analyzed. The data used in this article comes from transcripts of two previous studies, conducted in French with professional guitarists natively speaking French. The linguistic analysis of the corpus is based on different features which help to categorize the utterances according to each observed parameter, namely the relationship with the sense of touch, the object that is qualified by the words under study and the implication in discourse of the interviewee. The results permit to understand the use of the six categories of words in relationship with the sense of touch, and provide perspectives to use some of these words to focus the discourse on the sense of touch in future studies.

The Nationalist Critique of Female Double Suicide in Colonial Korea

Leighanne Yuh, Claudia Soddu

During the colonial period, the double love suicides of young “new women” were sensationalized by media outlets and became the object of discussion at a national level, triggering discourse over the role and value of women in Colonial Korea. This sense of involvement in the life and death of women was even more prominent when these suicides involved young women of child-bearing age, whose deaths could be collectively perceived as a loss of an important human resource for the country. This article will examine why the media focus was on young, educated upper-class women and how the discourse about their suicides expanded beyond a moral cautionary tale and was coopted by the Korean nationalist movement. We analyze the discourse that followed two representative female double suicides, the Yun/Kim suicide of 1926, and the Hong/Kim homosexual double suicide of 1931, focusing on the critique published mainly in the Tonga Ilbo newspaper. We also examine the response of the feminist movements, or lack thereof, and the development of the ideological conflict between feminist and nationalist movements. Female suicide was one of the many battlefields between the nationalist and the feminist movements during the colonial period. As an issue involving women at every level of society, it had the potential to challenge the Confucian patriarchal system and bring to light the new needs of Korean women. However, as this analysis has shown, it was dismissed as a personal and trivial matter compared with the urgent public issue of national liberation. The rise of women's movements in Korea, fueled by a small clique of educated women, was ultimately subsumed by the nationalist movement and relegated to the realm of the private and inconsequential.
