The impact of ESG disclosure on firm value: evidence from the tourism industry

Iuliana Mădalina Petrică (Papuc)

In light of recent challenges, including climate change initiatives, the need for natural resource preservation, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the significance of Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) disclosure has reached new heights. The tourism industry, characterized by its reliance on natural resources and interaction with local communities, stands out as a sector where sustainability initiatives are essential not only to mitigate negative impacts but also to improve stakeholder relations. The data was collected from Thomson Reuters' Eikon platform and covers a sample of 117 tourism companies from 2020 to 2022. Using SPSS statistical software, regression modelling was applied to determine the extent to which ESG information is correlated with market value. This paper highlights the key findings, including a significant association between ESG disclosure and firm value in the tourism sector, with ESG values explaining 59.4% of the variation in market value. Positive impacts were observed in two industry subcategories- Hotels, Motels & Cruise Lines and Leisure & Recreation, while Restaurants & Bars showed no significant effect. The originality of this study consists of its examination of the impact of ESG not only within the tourism industry as a whole, but also across its three specific sub-categories, providing a comprehensive perspective on the topic. It contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable business practices and has implications for both companies and investors seeking to harmonise financial and sustainability objectives. Future research could benefit from qualitative approaches to better understand the nuanced relationship between ESG practices and corporate value.

Benefits and Costs of Working in National Park Service: Focus Group Findings

V. A. Torres, Kira Swensen, Jordan P. Lewis et al.

The various parks that make up the National Park Service (NPS) serve as popular destinations for individuals and families alike, seeking rest, relaxation and beautiful views. The work necessary to upkeep the parks across the country is extensive. These parks are maintained by approximately 20,000 employees (both permanent and temporary). However, the toll it takes has not been examined in depth. Researchers conducted qualitative thematic analysis on three focus groups of NPS employees at a remote NPS unit in southwestern United States (US). Themes found include several costs and benefits to working for NPS as well as themes for burnout and opportunities for improvement. Benefits of working for NPS included: social support, vocational balance, concrete benefits, adventure, and NPS’s strong mission statement. Costs of working for NPS included: feelings of being overworked, social costs, leadership and management issues, and the inherent dangers of the job. Based on empirical literature, researchers coded the following burnout themes:overwhelming exhaustion, a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment, and feelings of disengagement and cynicism. Opportunities for agency improvement included: increased staffing, increased mental health resources, the provision of leadership/management training, and decreasing mental health stigma. The researchers' strong background in providing peer support training to first responders and military poised them well to establish peer support for NPS employees and provide tele-mental health at no cost for workers and their family members. This paper describes the results of a first qualitative step toward cultural awareness in a program of research with the long-range aim to improve NPS workers’ behavioral health and well-being in jobs that are often more avocation than vocation.

Implications of virtual reality in developing tourism – the case of Transylvania, Romania

Iulia Ruxandra Ticau

Technological advancements are constantly changing developing industries and impacting all players in the field. Among the most well-known revolutionary technologies is virtual reality (VR), a three-dimensional concept that offers its users the possibility to simulate new environments by visualizing the real world from their own location. This research article raises the question of the extent to which such technologies can influence the tourism potential of a much-discussed region in Romania, namely Transylvania. As a result, case study research with qualitative data was conducted, leading to an extended analysis of the current topic. By adopting a threefold division of VR’ potential destination: marketing tool, planning and managerial and entertainment tool, the study aimed at providing relevant insights upon the importance of VR for both service providers in the field, but also potential beneficiaries of touristic services. The results show that VR is of great benefit to the development of the tourism industry, but that factors such as costly implementation costs and "resistance" to innovation can occur. The research findings have implications for researchers in the field, but also for stakeholders in the tourism and technology sectors.

Olha Popova, Yana Diakova

Goal. The purpose of the article is the study of modern trends in the functioning of parks and recreation areas and the formation of scientific and methodological bases for the justification of the strategy for the development of park and recreation complexes in the system of sustainable development of territories. Method. The solution of the set research tasks within the framework of the goal is implemented by using a systematic approach, methods of statistical processing of information, methods of analysis and synthesis, a dialectical approach to determine the prerequisites and basis for developing a strategy for the development of park and recreation complexes in the system of sustainable development of territories. The results. According to the results of the study of modern trends in the functioning of parks and recreation areas, the thesis is substantiated that the significant destruction of natural objects as a result of active hostilities not only leads to the loss of Ukraine's natural potential and a number of negative environmental consequences, in particular, in the form of environmental pollution, but also to a decrease national well-being, which is manifested in the deterioration of the financial and economic results of the functioning of territories and cities, the living conditions and the performance of professional functions of the community located in such locations. The analysis of statistical data showed that the last decade was accompanied by the active creation of regional landscape parks and the activation of actions by the state and local communities in the field of transferring territories and urban zones to the status of those of nature conservation importance. In these conditions, park zones received a special status, which allows to ensure the renovation of natural objects and to push and develop natural objects. As a result of active hostilities, which is accompanied by the destruction of the infrastructure of cities, the reduction of the areas of nature-protected territories, the financial, economic and social results of business entities are reduced. Therefore, in the work, taking into account the objective need to develop an effective toolkit for substantiating the strategy of the development of park and recreation complexes in the system of sustainable development of territories, recommendations for choosing a strategy, decision-making criteria and algorithms for their implementation with the simultaneous achievement of positive environmental results and the growth of economic indicators of economic processes on territory As a result, the scientific and methodological principles of substantiating the strategy of development of park and recreation complexes in the system of sustainable development of territories were formed. It was noted that the proposed developments are aimed at realizing the socio-economic and ecological potential of restoration of park areas, in particular at the level of the city and territories. Prospective directions for the development of parks have been formed, which will contribute to such processes and the formation of effective economic policy in the field of organizational and economic provision of sustainable development of city parks and other recreational and landscape areas. The information basis for achieving the set goal is the official statistical data of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the Donetsk Regional State Administration, the results of research in the field of development of cities, territories, parks and recreation areas, carried out by domestic and foreign scientists, official sources of information on the financial and economic results of the functioning of regional of landscape parks of Ukraine, provisions of strategies for the development of cities and regions of Ukraine, provisions of the Sustainable Development Strategy of Ukraine until 2030. Development of the Tourist and Recreational Sphere: Empirics of Digitalization of Public Administration

N. Boretska, G. Krapivina, I. Marchenko

The article summarizes the world experience in the digitalization of public administration in the development of the tourist-reactionary sphere and demonstrates the feasibility of introducing digitalization in the adaptation of public administration to the realities of the modern world. It is shown that in the world practice, the digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere is based on a statistical description of tourist and recreational problems; creation of models for predicting the consequences of government decisions on the development of the tourism and recreation sector; means of measuring the economic efficiency of the development of various forms of organizing the use of the free time of the population. In particular, the digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere in Israel, Turkey and Puerto Rico demonstrates the feasibility of the goal of digitalization for the state solution of the problems of managing the intensity of visitor flows from the centers of population concentration in the destination and predicting the economic effect of this. In Israel, the digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere is aimed at increasing the volume of foreign currency entering the country through tourism, and its share in budget revenues, as well as maximizing the saving of resources for the development of local tourism. The digitalization of the Turkish Ministry of Tourism allows government decisions to be made to assess the likely and optimal economic effect from the development of destinations and their qualitative structure within the regional economy; balance the maximum supply and demand of tourism and recreation projects; calculate the surplus and deficit of tourist and recreational services; to maximize the level of costs necessary for the optimal economic effect on the development of the tourist and recreational sphere; optimize the distribution of funds by destination, depending on the potential for the development of the tourist and recreational sphere in each of them; to optimize the seasonal distribution of factors of activity of the tourist and recreational sphere; Determine the latent or existing cost limit associated with changing key assumptions, inputs, and optimal outcomes for the development of destinations. The practice of digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere in Bulgaria (Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, Albena, etc.) shows that the introduction of the principle of integrated and centralized digitalization of state management of their development deserves a positive assessment. The digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sector in the Pacific Ocean region makes it possible to determine the destinations of visitors that attract visitors in different seasons, which determines the characteristics of the destinations; logistic connections and characteristics of transport and information means for realizing the possibilities of communication between the point of departure and the point of destination in a certain period of time. In the countries of the South Adriatic, the digitalization of state management of the development of the tourist and recreational sphere makes it possible to justify the estimated and project estimates for the renewal of destinations. The digitalization of public administration in the development of French destinations gives rise to government decisions on the implementation of design programs for the use of territories favorable for tourism and recreation and to regulate the main parameters of their development. In the United States, the digitalization of the National Park Service is making it possible to implement projects to create nature reserves and tourist and recreational centers in historic cities.

Applying Risk Management Concepts from CRM and the Outdoor Recreation Industry to Academic Archaeology Projects

William A. White

ABSTRACT Field safety is being taken more seriously across the cultural resource management (CRM) industry as CRM companies seek to be in compliance with their clients’ health and safety programs and to keep employees safe. Many universities also have organizational health and safety programs designed to protect students and employees, but academic archaeology is routinely conducted without adequate risk management planning. Risk management will be a workplace concern for aspiring archaeologists after graduating from college, which is why it is important for academic archaeology to meet industry standards. Archaeology can learn a great deal about fieldwork risk management from the outdoor recreation industry, which emphasizes building leadership skills rather than following proscribed rules and regulations to mitigate the myriad hazards in the field. This article provides some suggestions that academic archaeologists can use to apply risk management concepts from CRM and the outdoor recreation industry to academic projects in order to comply with university requirements and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), as well as to teach students how to be safe in the field.

Powel Maxwell Worimegbe, Agbaje Ifedayo

Organizations rebrand as the need arises. The effect of this strategic action has divergent results in the literature, depending on the measure of performance. This study examines the effect of rebranding and how it drives customers’ retention in the telecommunication sector in Nigeria. The study is premised on the corporate identity, reposition, perceived quality and product features. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. Questionnaires were administered to 400 customers of 9Mobile Nigeria who were purposively selected. Using the simple regression, the result reveals the corporate reposition, corporate identity and perceived quality significantly affects customers’ retention while the product features dimension was non-significant in explaining customers’ retention in the telecommunication industry. The study recommends that firms should pay more to repositioning their brand in order to retain their customers. Corporate identity and perceived quality should be part of firms’ strategic plan. This will foster a sense of trust in the customers and give the business a touch of personality and culture. The study contributes to knowledge by establishing how corporate rebranding can be utilized as a strategy to retain customers in an organization.

Evaluation of Efficiency in Selected Areas of Public Services in European Union Countries

Martina Halásková, Renata Halásková, Viktor Prokop

Over the past 40 years, the service sector has become the dominant area of market economies. The public sector and services financed from public financing represent a specific group within the services sector. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of EU countries and find the extent to which the volume of public services (and the respective financial allocations) can have an impact on selected economic indicators. To this end, the efficiency of public expenditure in five areas of public services (general public services; health; education; social protection; and recreation, culture, and religion) in 2009 and 2016 was evaluated in relation to selected economic indicators (GDP per capita and employment in services). In addition, the efficiency of public expenditure in EU countries was evaluated in relation to the size of the public sector and traditions of public administration. For cross-country analyses within the 27 European countries, data envelopment analysis and the input-oriented variable returns to scale (VRS) model were applied. The results demonstrated that in 2009, 13 out of 27 countries were efficient as opposed to 2016, where only seven countries were efficient. In countries with bigger size of public sector, the efficiency of public expenditure on services was not established. However, there was a similarity in the efficiency of public expenditure on services between groups of EU countries regarding the tradition of public administration.

Wild Carpathia Future Development: From Illegal Deforestation to ORV Sustainable Recreation

M. Vodă, Adrian Torpan, L. Moldovan

Romanian Wild Carpathia constitutes the ultimate pristine wilderness of the old European continent. Carpathian Mountains landscape experiences and outdoor recreation represents quite unique cultural ecosystem services. The new annotations to the Forest Law are restricting any public access in the woods without authorities’ pre-approval for organised sport, leisure and tourism activities. However, off road vehicle (ORV) recreation is a popular activity and a growing transparency concern of National Forest Administration Authorities that is not managed accordingly. Here we show that our ORV recreation frame model can securely allow public access and protect all Romanian mountains. Our results demonstrate how growing ORV recreation popularity can be used in an honest and open way if it is well organized and controlled. We anticipate our assay to be a starting point for a regional and national forest administration sustainable development plan. Furthermore, stopping illegal forest activities is a major target of the anti-logging movement. A well-defined assay for the ORV recreation frame model will be relevant for such developments.

Servant or Service? The Problem and a Conceptual Solution

Guy Hornsby, Ben Gleason, Dan Wathen et al.

The present article addresses issues within U.S. collegiate sport as it pertains to the physical preparation and health and well-being of intercollegiate athletes. Specifically, the sport coach is often perceived as “all knowing” about every facet of their sport when, in fact, they typically are not formally educated or well-trained in current methods of enhancing sport performance. Often strength and conditioning coaches, who may also be poorly trained, are tied directly (financially and administratively) to the sport coach—a situation which has led to a subservient role heavily influenced by the wishes of the sport coach. This has unfortunately resulted in the multidimensional well-being of the athlete clearly not being a primary objective in many programs.

A TEORIA DA COMPLEXIDADE E O ECOSSISTEMA DO TURISMO

Mario Carlos Beni, Marutscka Moesch
