We demonstrate how an iterative method for potential inversion from distribution functions developed for simple liquid systems can be generalized to polymer systems. It uses the differences in the potentials of mean force between the distribution functions generated from a guessed potential and the true distribution functions to improve the effective potential successively. The optimization algorithm is very powerful: convergence is reached for every trial function in few iterations. As an extensive test case we coarse‐grained an atomistic all‐atom model of polyisoprene (PI) using a 13:1 reduction of the degrees of freedom. This procedure was performed for PI solutions as well as for a PI melt. Comparisons of the obtained force fields are drawn. They prove that it is not possible to use a single force field for different concentration regimes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Comput Chem 13: 1624–1636, 2003

Kayum Nasyri’s work as a teacher of the Tatar language at Orthodox theological schools in Kazan during the period from 1855 to 1870 is explored. In the micro-secular society of that time, his ties to the traditional Muslim community were weakened, distancing his religious practices and everyday life from “public oversight.” At the same time, this setting integrated him into a new intellectual world that aligned with his teaching and research interests. Despite being part of the Orthodox educational system, K. Nasyri maintained his Muslim way of life, even as the absence of a strong confessional community led to a slight decline in his religious activities. His dedication to scholarship and pedagogy, along with the support from prominent figures of the Russian and Tatar intelligentsia, shaped him into an outstanding linguist, ethnographer, and methodological expert. Within this micro-secular context, his enlightenment program took form. Engaging with scholarly literature, periodicals, and discussions with Kazan’s leading Turkologists and Orientalists, K. Nasyri became one of the most educated members of the Russian intelligentsia.

Unsupervised skill discovery in reinforcement learning (RL) aims to learn diverse behaviors without relying on external rewards. However, current methods often overlook the periodic nature of learned skills, focusing instead on increasing the mutual dependence between states and skills or maximizing the distance traveled in latent space. Considering that many robotic tasks - particularly those involving locomotion - require periodic behaviors across varying timescales, the ability to discover diverse periodic skills is essential. Motivated by this, we propose Periodic Skill Discovery (PSD), a framework that discovers periodic behaviors in an unsupervised manner. The key idea of PSD is to train an encoder that maps states to a circular latent space, thereby naturally encoding periodicity in the latent representation. By capturing temporal distance, PSD can effectively learn skills with diverse periods in complex robotic tasks, even with pixel-based observations. We further show that these learned skills achieve high performance on downstream tasks such as hurdling. Moreover, integrating PSD with an existing skill discovery method offers more diverse behaviors, thus broadening the agent's repertoire. Objective To systematically analyze relevant literature on evidence-based urology (EBU) in China and abroad, and to understand their definitions and methodological research status. Methods The PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, and SinoMed were searched, JD.com and Dangdang.com engines are used to assist retrieval. The search was conducted as of August 9, 2023. The connotation and methodological research characteristics of EBU were extracted, and then used content analysis to integrate the extracted information. Results A total of 37 literature were included. There was no literature on the definition of EBU yet, and the research topics involved randomized controlled trials, systematic review, guidelines, evidence grading, Cochrane Library and PubMed database literature retrieval, evidence-based clinical decision-making, etc. 12 articles focused on 11 topics of randomized controlled trials or clinical trials such as subgroup analysis, relative and absolute effects, alternative endpoints; 5 articles introduced 4 themes of systematic review including heterogeneity, publication bias, P-value and confidence interval, and likelihood ratio; 9 literature systematically outlined the key methods of evidence-based medicine and provide evidence support for clinical questions related to the urinary system diseases. In terms of writing format, cases of urinary system diseases were used for explanation. Conclusion The definition of EBU has not yet been clarified, but it has a good foundation of development and constructionn, and the theoretical system EBU needs to be further improved. For example, starting with the complexity of the problems emerging in urology, actively proposing new ways of solving them, enriching research evidence types, innovating grading standards, expanding the clinical decision-making methods of EBU, and accelerating the optimization of subject curriculum system and talent cultivation.

The article highlights the role of Boris Hrinchenko in the events related to the construction and opening ceremony of the monument to Ivan Kotlyarevsky in Poltava on August 30-31, 1903 (old style). Until now, this episode of B. Hrinchenko’s biography has not been the subject of separate research interest. The authors’ methodological approach is the systematic and critical use of available sources, primarily the materials of the periodicals of that time and the ego-documents of the participants and contemporaries of the events (memoirs, epistolary, diaries, etc.). They contain the most factual information about B. Hrinchenko’s participation in the “festive of the Ukrainian intelligentsia” in Poltava (S. Efremov’s words), include reflections of participants and interested persons, and reproduce public and political responses to events. It was found out that B. Hrinchenko was the organizer and active participant of many events during the “Kotlyarevsky days” in Poltava in 1903. At the same time, along with examples of his organizational activities, the sources recorded episodes of his practical performances of public duties. It is shown that the cases of cooperation of B. Hrinchenko and other famous public and political actors of the older generation with representatives of the Ukrainian youth radical environment during the Poltava events proved the possibility of joint, coordinated actions against the government’s anti-Ukrainian measures. It is proved that the open protest of the Ukrainian intelligentsia at the meeting of the Poltava City Duma against the ban on the public use of the Ukrainian language with the participation of B. Hrinchenko demonstrated the national maturity of the Ukrainian intellectual forces. Together with other Ukrainian figures, B. Hrinchenko managed to make information about the Poltava events knownin Ukraine and abroad through periodicals in Russia and Austria-Hungary.

The authors reveal the peculiarities of the Soviet press coverage of the issues related to culture and education in the United States during the “Thaw” period. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the domestic press materials of the period under review showed that the rhetoric used in relation to the US cultural development share many similarities with post-war rhetoric. In their opinion, this fact is explained by the ideological confrontation of the two systems, between - the “American dream” and the “Soviet way of life,” which excluded the possibility of peaceful coexistence. The materials on the culture issue were intended, on the one hand, to demonstrate the rapid decline of art and education in the United States, and, on the other hand, the impossibility of cooperation in that area. The authors also demonstrate that the positive aspects of American art were simultaneously sharply criticized. However, despite the continuity, the press of the “thaw” period had a number of unique features. It was distinguished by greater objectivity as well as reasoning, and on reliance of facts. In addition, presented information became more meaningful and was accompanied by photographic materials. The press published statements by American politicians, public figures and ordinary Americans, which made the publications more interesting for the reader.

Abstract The skeletal dysplasias are a heterogeneous group of genetic conditions caused by abnormalities of growth, development, and maintenance of bone and cartilage. Little is known about the roles that cytokines play in the inflammatory and non‐inflammatory pathophysiology of skeletal dysplasia. We sought to test our hypothesis that cytokines would be differentially expressed in children with skeletal dysplasia as compared to typically growing controls. Cytokine levels were analyzed using the Cytokine Human Magnetic 25‐Plex Panel (Invitrogen, Waltham, MA, USA); 136 growing individuals with skeletal dysplasia and compared to a cohort of 275 healthy pediatric control subjects. We focused on the expression of 12 cytokines across nine dysplasia cohorts. The most common skeletal dysplasia diagnoses were: achondroplasia (58), osteogenesis imperfecta (19), type II collagenopathies (11), multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED: 9), diastrophic dysplasia (8), metatropic dysplasia (8), and microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPDII: 8). Of the 108 specific observations made, 45 (41.7%) demonstrated statistically significant differences of expression between controls and individuals with skeletal dysplasia. Four of the 12 analyzed cytokines demonstrated elevated expression above control levels in all of the dysplasia cohorts (interleukin 12 [IL‐12], IL‐13, interferon γ‐induced protein 10 kDa [IP‐10], regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted [RANTES]) and two demonstrated expression below control levels across all dysplasia cohorts (monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 [MCP‐1], macrophage inflammatory protein‐1β [MIP‐1β]). The highest levels of overexpression were seen in MOPDII, with expression levels of IP‐10 being increased 3.8‐fold (p < 0.0001). The lowest statistically significant levels of expressions were in type II collagenopathies, with expression levels of MCP‐1 being expressed 0.43‐fold lower (p < 0.005). With this data, we hope to lay the groundwork for future directions in dysplasia research that will enhance our understanding of these complex signaling pathways. Looking forward, validating these early trends in cytokine expression, and associating the observed variations with trends in the progression of dysplasia may offer new candidates for clinical biomarkers or even new therapeutics. © 2023 The Authors. This article considers the features of the representation of the category of “quality” in advertising texts at the turn of the twentieth century. The author refers to daily and weekly regional periodicals of the time: Ural’skaia Zhizn’, Ural’skij Listok, Ekaterinburgskaia Nedelia, Delovoi Korrespondent, and Ekaterinburgskaia Gazeta selectively reviewing issues from 1893 to 1917. Although it does not itself produce ideas and meanings as it only applies them for its own needs, advertising as a source is interesting primarily because it reflects the basic values and fashion trends of its era. The aim of the study is to analyze the possible ways of communicating about the quality of the product in a holistic way. In the course of the work, the author identifies 8 tactics for informing the potential buyer about the quality of goods, and several related categories, such as “authenticity”, “authority”, and “status”. The research focuses on the peculiarities of the language design of information about the quality, as well as the analysis of the reasons for the choice by the authors of the advertising of a particular way of presenting this information. Much attention is also paid to the general characteristics of the development of an advertising text at the turn of the twentieth century. An analysis of the tactics of informing the buyer about the quality of the goods also helps draw an approximate “portrait” of the recipient of the advertisement — from rational people, for whom practicality and utility come first, to those who are ready to succumb to manipulation and persuasion choosing a product.

We show that the set of strictly temporally periodic points of cellular automata with almost equicontinuous points is dense in the topological support of the measure. This extends a result of Lena, Margara and Dennunzio about the density of the set of strictly temporally periodic of cellular automata with equicontinuous points.

User service by means of multimedia is an actual direction of library practice. Modern forms of interaction with the user have wide functionality, attract readers, form the image of an information institution and provide comfortable service conditions. The analysis of the experience of libraries in the creation and use of multimedia products allows the identification of main trends in the use of multimedia in library practice, studying the range of existing multimedia products, their features, advantages and typical errors. The purpose of the work is to study the foreign experience of creating and using multimedia products in servicing library users. In the course of the research, the following methods were used: analysis of the document flow based on the study of foreign professional periodicals, analysis of the websites of foreign national libraries, comparative analysis of foreign and domestic experience in presenting multimedia products on library websites. Foreign experience is considered on the basis of publications presented in foreign professional periodicals and analysis of multimedia sites of foreign national libraries. Multimedia products of domestic libraries are considered based on the analysis of the assortment presented on the websites of libraries of various levels and departmental affiliation. The description of the features of the implementation of multimedia products and their specific assortment is given. The analysis of publication activity on the problem under consideration and the thematic distribution of publications are presented, foreign journals with the largest number of articles on the research topic are identified. It is established that the issues of creating and using multimedia products are relevant not only for domestic, but also for foreign library practice. The interest of foreign authors in providing services in a remote format is noted. The creation and use of multimedia products in publications is mainly presented by the example of describing the experience of national libraries and libraries of educational institutions. The paper analyzes in detail the range and features of the implementation of multimedia products on the websites of foreign libraries in comparison with domestic library practice. The common types of multimedia products presented by foreign libraries and their difference from similar domestic ones are revealed. The forms of information presentation and additional features implemented in multimedia products are considered. It can be noted that the websites of foreign libraries do not reveal unique multimedia products that are not typical for domestic library practice, at the same time, a number of features in the presentation of information and the species assortment are noted.

Small states all over the globe have peculiar challenges foisted on them by their meagre population which may make some unviable and inconsequential in the comity of nations. While this can be said to be normatively politically correct, the realities have proven otherwise. Countries like Singapore, Qatar, Oman, Switzerland, etc., have crafted enviable statecraft that positioned them in strategic socio-economic and political vantage positions. For the Caribbean country of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, the quest to succeed as a strong and virile small state has remained daunting due to a lot of intervening internal and external dynamics. This study is therefore poised to evaluate the Guyanese national trajectory towards a sustainable and stable Caribbean nation in the face of precarious post-colonial history, political alliance and nuances of intra and inter-regional influences on a country with great economic and geo-strategic potentials and the contradictions of a small population. In achieving this, the study relied on historical research design which is qualitative and explorative in nature. Study therefore relied extensively on secondary source of data via literature survey of books, reports from dailies and periodicals, government official publications, conference papers, journal publications and internet sources. Study also proffers policy options that can ameliorate the Guyanese post-colonial political challenges occasioned by the precarious colonial experiences, internal and external security challenges.

Periodicity and aperiodicity can exist in a state simultaneously and typically become quasi-periodicity and quasi-aperiodicity in a dynamically changing state. The quasi-periodic and quasi-aperiodic states existing in the periodic/aperiodic state mostly correspond to different phenomena and require different controls. For separation control of these states, this paper defines the periodic/aperiodic, quasi-periodic, and quasi-aperiodic states to construct a periodic/aperiodic separation filter that separates the periodic/aperiodic state into the quasi-periodic and quasi-aperiodic states. Based on these definitions, the linearity of periodic-pass and aperiodic-pass functions and the orthogonality of quasi-periodic and quasi-aperiodic state functions are proved. Subsequently, the periodic/aperiodic separation filter composed of periodic-pass and aperiodic-pass filters that realize the periodic-pass and aperiodic-pass functions is designed and integrated with a Kalman filter for estimation of the quasi-periodic and quasi-aperiodic states.
