Words about Pictures: The Narrative Art of Children's Picture Books

P. Nodelman

This book examines the special qualities of picture books-books intended to educate or tell stories to young children. Drawing from a number of aesthetic and literary sources, Perry Nodelman explores the way in which the interplay of the verbal and visual aspects of picture books conveys more narrative information and stimulation than either medium could acheive alone. Moving from "baby" books, alphabet books, and word books to such well-known children's picture books as Nancy Ekholm Burkert's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Gerald McDermott's "Arrow to the Sun," Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," and Chris Van Allsburg's "The Garden of Abdul Gasazi," reveals how picture-book design and illustration as well as by the relationships between pictures and their complementary texts.

Conceptualizing destination-community hospitality: an illustrated framework leveraging Persianate culture

Dori Davari, P. Alaedini, L. Cai

Purpose By adopting a cultural lens, this study aims to conceptualize destination-community hospitality to capture societal hospitality at the destination as an intangible asset. Destination-community hospitality comprises a set of attitudes and traits that are organically conveyed by community members and directly experienced by tourists. The paper contributes to efforts aimed at freeing hospitality from the confines of commercial lodging and food and beverage establishments. Design/methodology/approach This study proposes an affection–attention–awareness (AAA) framework by drawing on the pertinent literature and leveraging the affective–behavioral–cognitive model of attitudinal change. It focuses on the effects of cognition in conceptualizing destination-community hospitality as the core of the framework. Methodologically, the framework is illustrated with qualitative data including observational fieldwork and interviews conducted in Iran. Findings Illustration of the AAA framework in the context of Iran highlights how welcoming attitudes are leveraged at a destination as an ingrained community mindset even in the absence of formal initiatives or professional training. It underscores the hospitality advocacy role of local-community members irrespective of public-sector policy and capacity deficiencies. Practical implications Destinations that strive to attract tourists should tap into the significant wealth of intuitive hospitality within communities as an intangible resource. The ingenuity should be preserved to sustainably enhance the overall tourist experiences. The framework can serve as a guide to strategically facilitate destination-community hospitality. Originality/value Research on community-wide hospitality at destinations, as a major cultural asset in the context of strategic hospitality management, remains underdeveloped. With illustrative evidence, the findings elevate the critical role of community members as innate advocates of hospitality in developing destinations. The proposed framework of destination-community hospitality provides a new perspective and impetus for investigating hospitality beyond commercial domains.

Designing with biobased composites: understanding digital material perception through semiotic attributes

Manu Thundathil, Ali Reza Nazmi, Bahareh Shahri et al.

Biobased composites, which are considered a sustainable alternative to plastics, are yet to create a significant influence on product design and manufacturing. A key reason for this is perceptual handicaps associated with biobased composites and this study was aimed at understanding the mechanisms behind biocomposite perception, in the context of digital visuals. This study of digital biocomposite visuals demonstrated that material perception is influenced by the visual characteristics of the material. Data analysis of the perceptual attributes of the materials pointed towards clear ‘clustering’ of the materials against these attributes. Analysis shows that visual features like fibres and surface appearance may impact aesthetic and functional evaluation and there is no effect on age, gender or polymer type. We also propose a reference framework to categorise biobased composites based on visual order.

Different Types of Isomorphisms of Drawings of Complete Multipartite Graphs

Oswin Aichholzer, Birgit Vogtenhuber, Alexandra Weinberger

Simple drawings are drawings of graphs in which any two edges intersect at most once (either at a common endpoint or a proper crossing), and no edge intersects itself. We analyze several characteristics of simple drawings of complete multipartite graphs: which pairs of edges cross, in which order they cross, and the cyclic order around vertices and crossings, respectively. We consider all possible combinations of how two drawings can share some characteristics and determine which other characteristics they imply and which they do not imply. Our main results are that for simple drawings of complete multipartite graphs, the orders in which edges cross determine all other considered characteristics. Further, if all partition classes have at least three vertices, then the pairs of edges that cross determine the rotation system and the rotation around the crossings determine the extended rotation system. We also show that most other implications -- including the ones that hold for complete graphs -- do not hold for complete multipartite graphs. Using this analysis, we establish which types of isomorphisms are meaningful for simple drawings of complete multipartite graphs.

Alessandra Cirafici, Alice Palmieri

Planar Confluent Orthogonal Drawings of 4-Modal Digraphs

Sabine Cornelsen, Gregor Diatzko

In a planar confluent orthogonal drawing (PCOD) of a directed graph (digraph) vertices are drawn as points in the plane and edges as orthogonal polylines starting with a vertical segment and ending with a horizontal segment. Edges may overlap in their first or last segment, but must not intersect otherwise. PCODs can be seen as a directed variant of Kandinsky drawings or as planar L-drawings of subdivisions of digraphs. The maximum number of subdivision vertices in an edge is then the split complexity. A PCOD is upward if each edge is drawn with monotonically increasing y-coordinates and quasi-upward if no edge starts with decreasing y-coordinates. We study the split complexity of PCODs and (quasi-)upward PCODs for various classes of graphs.

QFlow: Quantitative Information Flow for Security-Aware Hardware Design in Verilog

Lennart M. Reimann, Luca Hanel, Dominik Sisejkovic et al.

The enormous amount of code required to design modern hardware implementations often leads to critical vulnerabilities being overlooked. Especially vulnerabilities that compromise the confidentiality of sensitive data, such as cryptographic keys, have a major impact on the trustworthiness of an entire system. Information flow analysis can elaborate whether information from sensitive signals flows towards outputs or untrusted components of the system. But most of these analytical strategies rely on the non-interference property, stating that the untrusted targets must not be influenced by the source's data, which is shown to be too inflexible for many applications. To address this issue, there are approaches to quantify the information flow between components such that insignificant leakage can be neglected. Due to the high computational complexity of this quantification, approximations are needed, which introduce mispredictions. To tackle those limitations, we reformulate the approximations. Further, we propose a tool QFlow with a higher detection rate than previous tools. It can be used by non-experienced users to identify data leakages in hardware designs, thus facilitating a security-aware design process.

From Tutte to Floater and Gotsman: On the Resolution of Planar Straight-line Drawings and Morphs

Giuseppe Di Battista, Fabrizio Frati

The algorithm of Tutte for constructing convex planar straight-line drawings and the algorithm of Floater and Gotsman for constructing planar straight-line morphs are among the most popular graph drawing algorithms. In this paper, focusing on maximal plane graphs, we prove upper and lower bounds on the resolution of the planar straight-line drawings produced by Floater's algorithm, which is a broad generalization of Tutte's algorithm. Further, we use such results in order to prove a lower bound on the resolution of the drawings of maximal plane graphs produced by Floater and Gotsman's morphing algorithm. Finally, we show that such a morphing algorithm might produce drawings with exponentially-small resolution, even when transforming drawings with polynomial resolution.

Numerical Design of Distributive Mixing Elements

Sebastian Hube, Marek Behr, Stefanie Elgeti et al.

This paper presents a novel shape-optimization technique for the design of mixing elements in single-screw extruders. Extruders enable the continuous production of constant-cross-section profiles. Equipped with one or several screw-shaped rotors, extruders transport polymer particles towards the outlet. Due to shear heating, melting is induced and a melt stream is created, which can be further processed. While many variants of multi-screw extruders exist, a significant share of all extrusion machines is made up of single-screw extruders due to their comparatively low operating costs and complexity. While the reduced complexity yields economic benefits, single-screw extruders' mixing capabilities, i.e., their ability to produce a melt with a homogeneous material and temperature distribution, suffer compared to multi-screw extruders. To compensate for this shortcoming, so-called mixing elements are added to the screw to enhance mixing by recurring flow reorientations. In view of the largely unintuitive flow characteristics of polymer melts, we present an optimization framework that allows designing these mixing elements numerically based on finite-element simulations of the melt flow. To reduce the computational demand required by shape optimization of a complete mixing section, we only focus on the shape optimization of a single mixing element. This paper presents advances in three aspects of numerical design: (1) A combination of free-form deformation and surface splines is presented, allowing to parameterize the mixing element's shape by very few variables. (2) The combination of this concept with a linear-elasticity-based mesh update method to deform the computational domain without the need for remeshing is demonstrated. (3) A simple yet robust and sensitive objective formulation to assess distributive mixing in laminar flows based on a measure for the interfacial area is proposed.

Post-Positivism in Health Professions Education Scholarship.

M. Young, A. Ryan

An understanding of the diversity of perspectives within the research paradigms of health professions education (HPE) is essential for rigorous research design and more purposeful engagement with the contributions of others. In this article the authors explicitly discuss the underlying assumptions, notions of good scholarship, and shortcomings of the post-positivism research paradigm. While post-positivism is likely one of the more familiar paradigms within HPE research, it is rarely formally or explicitly described. Drawing on key literature and contemporary examples, the authors describe the ontology, epistemology, methodologies, axiology, signs of rigor, and common critiques of post-positivism. A case study provides the focus for a practical illustration of how a post-positivist approach to education research could be applied. Suggestions for further reading are provided for those who are keen to delve deeper into the history and key tenants of the post-positivist stance.

Reflections on the US College Loans System: Lessons from Australia and England

N. Barr, Bruce J. Chapman, L. Dearden et al.

There is wide agreement the US student loan system faces significant problems. Seven million borrowers are in default and many more experience non-repayment. The stress of repayments faced by many students results at least in part from the design of US student loans. Specifically, loans are organised like a mortgage, with fixed monthly repayments over a fixed period of time, creating a high repayment burden on borrowers with low income. This paper draws on the experience of the income-contingent loan (ICL) systems operating in England and Australia, in which monthly repayments are related to the borrower's monthly income. By design, those systems explicitly include insurance against problems of repayment during periods of low income. We discuss the design of this type of loan in detail since such an exercise seems to be largely absent in the US literature. Drawing on data from the US Current Population Survey (CPS) we provide two main empirical contributions. First a stylised illustration of the revenue and distributional implications of different hypothetical ICL arrangements for the USA; and second an illustration of repayment problems faced by low-earning borrowers in the US loan system, including a plausible example of adverse outcomes in the Stafford loan. Importantly, we compare repayment burdens under the existing and alternative systems. Our illustrations show how US mortgage-style loans can create financial difficulties for a significant minority of US borrowers, difficulties which a well-designed ICL has significant potential to address.
