Deep nested U-structure network with frequency attention for building semantic segmentation

Khaled Moghalles, Zaid Al-Huda, Dalal AL-Alimi et al.

Abstract The automated segmentation of buildings from remotely sensed imagery has undergone extensive research and application across various industrial domains. Despite this, several challenges persist, including incomplete internal extraction, low accuracy in edge segmentation, and difficulties in predicting irregular targets. We have introduced a novel approach to address these issues: an end-to-end residual U-structure embedded within a U-Net, enhanced by a frequency attention module and a hybrid loss function. The novel residual U-structure is introduced to replace the encode-decode blocks of traditional U-Nets, and the hybrid loss function is utilized to guide segmentation for more complete and accurate segmentation masks. A frequency attention module is also implemented to emphasize essential features and minimize irrelevant ones. A comparison of the proposed framework with other baseline schemes was conducted on four benchmark data sets, and the experimental results demonstrate that our framework performs better segmentation than other baseline state-of-the-art schemes.

PharmaNet Deep: Real-Time Pharmaceutical Defect Detection Using Defect-Guided Feature Fusion and Uncertainty-Driven Inspection

Ajantha Vijayakumar, Joseph Abraham Sundar Koilraj, Muthaiah Rajappa

Abstract Oral dosage forms are the most widely employed method of drug delivery in therapeutic treatments. However, the presence of visual defects in blister packages can adversely affect the drug's bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy, potentially compromising treatment outcomes. Consequently, detecting tablet defects post-blister packaging in real-time represents a critical challenge in the pharmaceutical industry. Additionally, factors such as blister reflections and limited dataset size hinder the deep learning model's ability to identify defects accurately. To address these challenges, the PharmaNet deep model is developed utilizing a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, incorporating defect-guided dynamic feature fusion (DGDFF) in which the fusion process is dynamically guided by potential defect regions, allowing the model to focus on relevant features (defect areas) more efficiently, adaptive deep chain (ADC) which includes occlusion pattern generator (OPG) and residual recursive feature reconstructor (R2FR). The OPG creates multiple views of potential defect regions by systematically dividing features into blocks and creating layered occlusions. At the same time, the R2FR uses gates with ELU activation and residual connections to reconstruct detailed features from these occluded sequences, ultimately enhancing the model's ability to detect subtle defects. The model culminates in an uncertainty-aware detection head that enhances defect prediction reliability by incorporating uncertainty estimates alongside traditional class probabilities and bounding box predictions. This provides a more informed and interpretable decision-making process for pharmaceutical quality control in real-time. Empirical evaluation on the proposed model demonstrates state-of-the-art performance with 99.4% mAP on the PharmaBlister dataset and 97.2% mAP on MVTech AD, with minimal predictive uncertainty, validating its efficacy in pharmaceutical quality control applications.

AI-Based Environmental Color System in Achieving Sustainable Urban Development

Pohsun Wang, Wu Song, Junling Zhou et al.

Confronting the age of artificial intelligence, exploring art through technology has become one of the directions of interdisciplinary development. Not only does artificial intelligence technology explore sustainability on a technical level; it can also take advantage of itself to focus on the visual perception of the living environment. People frequently interpret environmental features through their eyes, and the use of intuitive eye-tracking can provide effective data that can contribute to environmental sustainability in managing the environment and color planning to enhance the image of cities. This research investigates the visual responses of people viewing the historic city of Macau through an eye movement experiment to understand how the color characteristics of the physical environment are perceived. The research reveals that the buildings and plantings in the historic district of Macau are the most visible objects in the environment, while the smaller scale of St. Dominic’s Square, the Company of Jesus Square, and St. Augustine’s Square, which have a sense of spatial extension, have also become iconic environmental landscapes. This also draws visual attention and guides the direction of travel. The overall impressions of the Historic Centre of Macau, as expressed by the participants after the eye movement experiment, were mainly described as “multiculturalism”, “architectural style”, “traditional architecture”, “color scheme”, and “garden planting”. The 60 colors representing the urban color of Macau are then organized around these deep feelings about the environment. Therefore, for future inspiration, the 60 colors can be applied through design practice to create color expressions that fit the local characteristics, and thereby enhance the overall visual image of the city.

The development of an automated lighting control system for special purpose objects

N.O. , T.M. , Yu.I. et al.

The article proposes the development of an automated lighting control system for special purpose objects, for example, a theater stage or a concert hall. Stage lighting plays an important role in the respective art and lamps are one of the types of lighting devices. The developed system is focused on modern LED lamps, which have the following advantages compared to traditional lamps: much lower power consumption, much longer average «life», much less heat dissipation. The system was built with the use of a microcontroller, which made it possible to improve its characteristics based on the well-known and mastered microcontroller architecture by supplementing it with specialized blocks implemented taking into account the features of the control object. A structural and circuit electrical scheme of the lighting control system has been developed. The basis of the scheme is the Atmel ATmega162 microcontroller of the AVR family, which has the widest set of functions. An algorithm for the lighting control system was also developed and a program for a microcontroller using the C programming language was written.

The pathobiology of select adolescent young adult lymphomas

Christian Steidl, Robert Kridel, Michael Binkley et al.

Abstract Lymphoid cancers are among the most frequent cancers diagnosed in adolescents and young adults (AYA), ranging from approximately 30%–35% of cancer diagnoses in adolescent patients (age 10–19) to approximately 10% in patients aged 30–39 years. Moreover, the specific distribution of lymphoid cancer types varies by age with substantial shifts in the subtype distributions between pediatric, AYA, adult, and older adult patients. Currently, biology studies specific to AYA lymphomas are rare and therefore insight into age‐related pathogenesis is incomplete. This review focuses on the paradigmatic epidemiology and pathogenesis of select lymphomas, occurring in the AYA patient population. With the example of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders, nodular lymphocyte‐predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, follicular lymphoma (incl. pediatric‐type follicular lymphoma), and mediastinal lymphomas (incl. classic Hodgkin lymphoma, primary mediastinal large B cell lymphoma and mediastinal gray zone lymphoma), we here illustrate the current state‐of‐the‐art in lymphoma classification, recent molecular insights including genomics, and translational opportunities. To improve outcome and quality of life, international collaboration in consortia dedicated to AYA lymphoma is needed to overcome challenges related to siloed biospecimens and data collections as well as to develop studies designed specifically for this unique population.

An Experimental Educational Approach through Teaching the History of Architecture and Heritage for a better Practice in Architectural Design

Doaa Abouelmagd, Hager Mohamed Abdelrahman Ahmed

Many architecture schools do not apply experimental learning in teaching theoretical courses like the history of architecture courses. There is a gap between what the students learn in theoretical courses like architectural styles in history courses and design practices. History classes are taught with a teacher-oriented approach, where students miss active and experimental learning. As a result, in the Egyptian urban setting, we find buildings designed using architectural styles, mostly Classical designs, without respecting the technical, aesthetic, and human factors. Furthermore, nowadays, the Egyptian government is very active in constructing the new Administrative Capital of Egypt. The new city is located 45 kilometers East of Cairo, and it is planned to be Egypt's new business and financial center. The new Downtown of the new capital city, or "The new Garden City," is planned to reassemble Khedival Cairo's peculiar value buildings with the renaissance, neo-classic, eclectic, and neo-baroque styles. As architectural education cannot be separated from current architectural practices, this paper introduces the research project results in the course "History of Architecture-level two." The course was taught in the first semester of the academic year (2018-19) in Fine arts, Cairo, Helwan University, Egypt. The students were asked to select a heritage building with a peculiar value from Khedival Cairo, analyze it with the seven principles of design, and propose a design for a building's facades in the new Capital city Downtown. This paper aims to introduce the results of the students' work, analyzing their designs, and the effect of experimental learning in developing their intellectual skills. The paper includes the results of a designed questioner answered by the students to evaluate the research project and the link between the history of architecture, heritage, and architecture design. The paper shows the importance of applying experimental learning and linking theoretical and practical courses for achieving better architecture practice.

Review of biomimetic flexible flapping foil propulsion systems on different planetary bodies

Naga Praveen Babu Mannam, Md. Mahbub Alam, P. Krishnankutty

Locomotion techniques employed by different biological animals are extremely diverse and fascinating from an engineering point of view. The explorations of planets such as Mars, Titan, Europa, Enceladus with the use of aerial, terrestrial, and underwater rovers are gaining significant interest from academia, industry, planetary scientists, robotic engineers, and international space agencies around the globe. This article presents an overview of the existing state-of-the-art investigations on recently developed flapping foil propulsion of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) for the exploration of Earth’s oceans and other terrestrial bodies such as Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, and Saturn’s moon Titan. The use of flapping foils further advances into Martian Atmospheres in the form of insect-inspired micro aerial vehicles working at low Reynolds numbers. The development of aerial vehicles mimicking insect flapping is essential in low Reynolds number environments to generate sufficient lift and thrust for carrying out future Mars missions. The Cassini mission to Titan, Voyage mission, and other flyby missions to Europa found that liquid atmosphere exists on the subsurface of Europa and on the surface of Titan in the form of liquid methane lakes. The ice-covered ocean under the Europa surface is analogous to the Antarctic ice. The developments of autonomous surface ships and underwater vehicles for the exploration of the planets in cryogenic conditions are discussed with suitable biomimetic propulsion systems. The design methodology, hydrodynamic stability, and resistance estimation in cryogenic atmospheres are presented which can act as a benchmark for future missions.

Research on the Innovative Approach of Intergrowth of Xipi Lacquer Art in Huizhou and Modern Product Design

Sun Fuliang, Shu Wei

Xipi Lacquer Art in Huizhou was once well-known all over China with the brilliant Huizhou merchants and it was once also annihilated in the river of long history. The surface of Huizhou Xipi Lacquer Art is so bright that it can serve as a mirror, and the swirling, complicated and changing patterns endow it with mysterious and gorgeous beauty. In modern times, since the technique of Huizhou Xipi Lacquer Art recovered all that was lost, its special aesthetic sense of beauty and the craftsman’s pursuit of superlative craftsmanship have led to the increasing emphasis on the objects produced by it for people to appreciate. This deviates from the public’s demand for stable quality and economic utility, and it is difficult to integrate into the consumer market. In this paper, through the in-depth analysis of the history and context of Huizhou Xipi Lacquer Art, the author combines with the theory of contemporary product design to explore the advantages and disadvantages of Huizhou Xipi Lacquer Art into modern product design. Besides, the author uses the scientific research method to find a breakthrough for the two symbiosis and concludes the approach to realize the innovation and development of the excellent traditional technology in the era of science and technology.

¿El darija como lengua «natural» del teatro marroquí?.[Darija the ‘natural’ language of Moroccan theater?]

Omar FERTAT

Targeting Inflammation With Nanosized Drug Delivery Platforms in Cardiovascular Diseases: Immune Cell Modulation in Atherosclerosis

Antonio Cervadoro, Roberto Palomba, Giuseppe Vergaro et al.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a disorder of large and medium-sized arteries; it consists in the formation of lipid-rich plaques in the intima and inner media, whose pathophysiology is mostly driven by inflammation. Currently available interventions and therapies for treating atherosclerosis are not always completely effective; side effects associated with treatments, mainly caused by immunodepression for anti-inflammatory molecules, limit the systemic administration of these and other drugs. Given the high degree of freedom in the design of nanoconstructs, in the last decades researchers have put high effort in the development of nanoparticles (NPs) formulations specifically designed for either drug delivery, visualization of atherosclerotic plaques, or possibly the combination of both these and other functionalities. Here we will present the state of the art of these subjects, the knowledge of which is necessary to rationally address the use of NPs for prevention, diagnosis, and/or treatment of AS. We will analyse the work that has been done on: (a) understanding the role of the immune system and inflammation in cardiovascular diseases, (b) the pathological and biochemical principles in atherosclerotic plaque formation, (c) the latest advances in the use of NPs for the recognition and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, (d) the cellular and animal models useful to study the interactions of NPs with the immune system cells.

Bezield door gedeelde afkeer

Jolanda van der Lee

On an international conference in Amsterdam in 1901, criminologist Arnold Aletrino explained the newest theory on homosexuality, which stated that it was not a disease or perversion, but an innate, ‘natural’ phenomenon. This theory shocked important politicians among whom Dutch prime minister Abraham Kuyper, who therefore started a political debate on legislation on homosexuality. Ultimately this debate led to art. 248 bis of the Dutch Penal Code in 1911 that prohibited – under certain circumstances – ‘indecency’ between people of the same sex. In this article I discuss how between 1901 and 1911 the aversion to homosexuality was so obvious in the Netherlands for almost everyone, that right-wing politicians could deploy the existence of the new theory on homosexuality as a stick to beat the left-wing dog. Confessional politicians used it as a means to prove that the Christian ‘Free University’ should be entitled to award academic degrees and to illustrate the dangers of public libraries and of the plans for change in the judicial system. Socialists and Liberals had no defence against this weapon, because they shared the moral judgment on homosexuality with the right-winged politicians. Therefore, in the political debate on the ‘anti-gay-article’, the dispute was not about what Troelstra called “the abhorrence of homosexuality that we all share”, but whether legislation on homosexuality was appropriate.

Nawidzenie. O kino-myśleniu poza metafizyką na przykładzie filmu Abbasa Kiarostamiego „Smak czereśni” (przypis do Jeana-Luca Nancy’ego)

Janusz Bohdziewicz

Celem tekstu jest refleksja nad możliwością myśli filmowej poza uwarunkowaniami metafizyki. Esej rozważa tę kwestię na marginesie filmu Abbasa Kiarostamiego Smak czereśni, w nawiązaniu do myśli Martina Heideggera i Jeana-Luca Nancy’ego.

BUSCAS DE INFORMAÇÕES TECNOLÓGICAS COM BASE EM DADOS DE PATENTES: ESTUDO DE CASO DOS LÍQUIDOS IÔNICOS NO BRASIL

Marcelo Gomes Speziali, Rubén Dario Sinisterra

This study describes the application of the Art of Scientific and Technological Search to strategically analyze areas of technological and industrial development. Application of scientific search strategies such as the creation of Patent Landscape has been shown to be useful for writing research projects, earning grants, publishing papers, drafting patent applications, and analyzing the market and economic potentials of a previous determined subject. The Patent Landscape regards a simplified analysis of technologies concerning ionic liquids patents applied in Brazil and published by Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial(INPI). A total of 93 patent applications using the keywords "ionic liquids" were found in the INPI database. Among these, 75% were nonresident applications and 25% were Brazilian resident applications. Interestingly, BASF, Chevron Industries, and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) were discovered as higher patent applicant assignees. Differences in the patent application areas were also observed between these applicants, with new solvents and petrochemical applications as the areas of focus for the industrial applications (BASF and Chevron Industries), and energy production, catalysis, and chemical reaction media as the focus for the university applications.

“I timidi fiori del cuore e della mente”: Verses of a V.A.D.

Ellen Patat

Vera Brittain’s Verses of a V.A.D. belongs to the war poetry genre, a predominantly male domain, and presents the reader with the thoughts of a volunteer nurse during the First World War. Not only have the emotions evoked by the verbal images of the poems in this collection marked the life of the British writer, but they also represent the feelings of many women who found themselves in similar situations and could not or did not know how to give voice to their sorrow. Through the selection of some poems, also translated in Italian, the present paper aims to explore a woman’s experience during the Great War. The dialectic life/death is reflected in the verses of the author who uses the art of poetry as a tool for mourning when deprived of her loved ones. Through poems characterized by an essential style, a simple vocabulary and brief verses, Vera Brittain puts on paper her sorrow in “shy flowers of the heart and the mind”; poems that bear witness to the passing away of many lives and to the hope to survive in a present burdened with so many losses.

General regression and representation model for classification.

Jianjun Qian, Jian Yang, Yong Xu

Recently, the regularized coding-based classification methods (e.g. SRC and CRC) show a great potential for pattern classification. However, most existing coding methods assume that the representation residuals are uncorrelated. In real-world applications, this assumption does not hold. In this paper, we take account of the correlations of the representation residuals and develop a general regression and representation model (GRR) for classification. GRR not only has advantages of CRC, but also takes full use of the prior information (e.g. the correlations between representation residuals and representation coefficients) and the specific information (weight matrix of image pixels) to enhance the classification performance. GRR uses the generalized Tikhonov regularization and K Nearest Neighbors to learn the prior information from the training data. Meanwhile, the specific information is obtained by using an iterative algorithm to update the feature (or image pixel) weights of the test sample. With the proposed model as a platform, we design two classifiers: basic general regression and representation classifier (B-GRR) and robust general regression and representation classifier (R-GRR). The experimental results demonstrate the performance advantages of proposed methods over state-of-the-art algorithms.

Slow Motion and Zoom in HD Digital Videos Using Fractals

Maurizio Murroni, Cristian Perra, Daniele D. Giusto

Slow motion replay and spatial zooming are special effects used in digital video rendering. At present, most techniques to perform digital spatial zoom and slow motion are based on interpolation for both enlarging the size of the original pictures and generating additional intermediate frames. Mainly, interpolation is done either by linear or cubic spline functions or by motion estimation/compensation which both can be applied pixel by pixel, or by partitioning frames into blocks. Purpose of this paper is to present an alternative technique combining fractals theory and wavelet decomposition to achieve spatial zoom and slow motion replay of HD digital color video sequences. Fast scene change detection, active scene detection, wavelet subband analysis, and color fractal coding based on Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) measure are used to reduce computational load and to improve visual quality. Experiments show that the proposed scheme achieves better results in terms of overall visual quality compared to the state-of-the-art techniques.
