Providing a Multidimensional Framework for Measuring and Quantifying Gig Workers Commitment

Habib Roodsaz

The expansion of the gig economy and the widespread transformations in employment patterns have highlighted the necessity of revisiting traditional human resource management concepts, particularly in assessing employee commitment. In this dynamic context, identifying the dimensions and indicators of gig workers' commitment especially from the employer’s perspective، plays a crucial role in improving the management and retention of this flexible and project-based workforce. The aim of this study is to develop a multidimensional framework for measuring and quantifying gig worker commitment from the employer’s viewpoint, based on objective and data-driven indicators. The research was conducted in two phases. First, through a systematic literature review, relevant indicators for commitment assessment were identified. Then, using the Best-Worst Method (BWM), a multi-criteria decision-making approach, these indicators were weighted and prioritized. The findings of the study revealed five key dimensions, ranked in order of weight, as the most important components for assessing gig workers' commitment from the employer's perspective: stability and reliability of work, performance and work quality, engagement and proactiveness, professionalism and ethical behavior, and work relationship persistence. This framework provides a structured basis for designing targeted performance evaluation systems and developing more effective management policies for organizations operating within the gig economy.

The components and capacities of Persian language in Iranian cultural diplomacy

mahdi zolfaghari, ali gholamali

Introduction Cultural diplomacy, in the contemporary era, is considered as an important factor in decision making among countries in various fields. Therefore, world countries cannot, as before, merely depend on governmental interactions among governments in the framework of conventional diplomacy. They need in order to increase efficiency, to follow meaningful communication with the public, particularly the educated elite, and in this view, deploy various approaches and methods in this regard (Samiei Isfahani & Fathi Mozafari, 2012, p.146).According to Marshal Maclohan, the process of life in the information and communication era, due to the rapid communication and cultural exchanges, has resulted in the noticeable participation of people, and inevitably more consideration of public diplomacy capacities, and consequently more involvement of nations in the international processes. In this way cultural diplomacy has earned a special new position in the foreign policy trends of governments. This essential task has so much evolved, that in addition to the different dimensions and scientific, cultural grounds, has intensely structurally affected the foreign policies of governments.Among the cultural elements of the country's foreign policies, the language and literature factors, are the most effective and influential players for the realization of other objectives. The reason for the emerging importance of cultural diplomacy is to attain a higher level of possibilities and capabilities as compared to the traditional diplomacy. This task is deployed with full capacity, can help attract public confidence, increase the role of identity making, and establish effective socio-cultural stability. For this reason, the government attempt, in line with the realization of cultural diplomacy, to convey most of the information and cultural efficiency criteria in order to create trust and provide national interests. Methodology The basis of this paper’s methodology is analytical descriptive, a library type which is objective oriented and seeks through surveying the capacities of the country's cultural diplomacy criteria to have access to ways for the utilization of the Persian language capacities vis-a-vis cultural diplomacy to achieve ultimate national interests. In this way the procedures deployed will be used in designing efficient cultural diplomacy’s practical and strategic programs and plans. The article's main question is to seek the components of the Persian language soft power capacities in the cultural diplomacy context. It is attempted, in this line, upon examining the theoretical dimensions of cultural diplomacy, through reasoning based upon studies of library sources, to derive the capacities and components of the Persian language soft power in cultural diplomacy. Therefore, the hypothesis of the article is also composed of the fact that Iran enjoys the essential, necessary capacities of Persian language literature and linguistic for the promotion of cultural diplomacy for the sake of materializing national interest’s objectives and consequently influence other governments approach in this regard. Concerning the role of language in cultural diplomacy, Persian language and Persian literature are the most important recognized criteria. This fact is due to various dimensions of art, such as painting which throughout Iran's cultural development has so much mingled with the content of Persian language and literature, that its essence cannot be known without understanding the Persian language heritage. Discussion The important role of language and cultural diplomacy in the information era, simultaneous with the political-cultural domination of the bipolar world order, and its replacement with the soft power instead of hard power, enjoys a special status and position. The writer of this article through the concepts of Persian language and cultural diplomacy studies the cultural interaction in this respect with other nations. As mentioned earlier, language and literature play a key role in cultural diplomacy and are influential for the relations of objectives and national interests of other countries. Due to such facts, in the contemporary world, cultural diplomacy with the objective of influencing the public opinion and consequently affecting the implementation of foreign policy goals, receives more focus than mere conventional diplomacy. In this way the main goal of cultural diplomacy is to impress the general public opinion of nations, organizations and NGOS, through cultural exchanges and offering a positive impression of the countries’ intentions. Based on this reason, ignoring this fact can cause weakness in the country's foreign policies and, as a result, with respect to their relevant position in the international arena. This article; moreover, intends to explain the components and capacities of the Persian language in the soft power of Iran cultural diplomacy. Regarding the Islamic republic of Iran, although foreign policy is intermingled with ideology and geopolitical issues, but relying on the promotion of Iran's international status through the composition and recognition of the cultural diplomacy, observing historical, social and Persian language heritage, can undoubtedly influence the realization of Iran's soft power abilities.Iran, considering its civilization, historical, literature, cultural and religious background enjoys adequate soft power resources that if reaching planned for fruitful objectives and utilizing potential resources can become one of the successful countries in the application of cultural diplomacy in the region and the world (Dadandish & Ahadi, 2011, p.146).The effects of the Persian language over cultural diplomacy is a reality derived from the Iranian history which can be considered as the greatest Persian language capacity for transferring the cultural, civilization values of Iran to other nations. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been able to introduce such concepts to the world within relevant socio-cultural and political context by conveying new concepts in cultural diplomacy which in addition to its Iranian values has Islamic identity. The components exhibit both rich Islamic cultural teaching as well as genuine Iranian cultural values, because the cultural language and literature is an effective media that can be instrumental in strengthening cultural interaction among countries. Conclusion With the fading out of the role of war and emergence of the information and communication of global village, more can be written on cultural diplomacy and its side effects.Cultural diplomacy through conveying the governments and nations the capacities of the relevant cultural concepts, and establishing private, intimate interaction among nations, will provide the possibility of making the related policies and programmers seem more attractive to the world public opinion, and have always been paid attention by the governments. It is unwise, at this juncture of time that cultural diplomacy with such privileges in the communication, information era, being the main priority for advancing international objectives, the Islamic republic of Iran be deprived from this benefit and not take it into its services. Not taking advantage of this opportunity will carry irreparable damage and consequences, and in the long run, will influence the realization of Iran's cultural, political and strategies interests.Cultural diplomacy, on one hand, serves as an instrument for realization of international diplomacy, and on the other hand, is a branch of diplomacy that should be paid attention to by the politicians. The privileges of this sort of activity include, relatively low cost, the software positive nature and public admission, as well as, benefits from the expanded ground of interaction and non-political management.Cultural diplomacy is based on soft power resources as a new method of means for the success of governments in foreign policy. Therefore, recognizing the components and capacities of the Islamic republic of Iran, cultural diplomacy and its timely correct deployment is necessary for the success of its foreign policy. The proper and optimum usage of such resources demands planning and following precise instruction. The Persian literature and Persian language are a valuable, unifying and identity making heritage in the history of this land. Despite the existence of various religions and ethnicities, the unifying factor of Iranian identity is the Persian language. This factor has so much infiltrated of the Iranian society that chapter 2 and article 15 of the constitution has expressly indicated on it. The importance and reflection of Persian language at junctures of time was influential in the expansion of socio-political exchanges, and acted to turn it to the language of science and knowledge in its respective geographic area, as well as a means of international exchange in its related time. In the contemporary time also, the admirers of the rich Iranian culture and literature in other parts of the world, are interested in studying this culture in a way that some universities in Europe and America have offered language study opportunities in this field. This essential possibility, combined with using public and cultural diplomacy, can demonstrate the software power aspects based on cultural attraction, and in this way make the utmost usage of such capacity in the neighboring sphere. The geographical proximity in the Central Asian and Caucasus region demonstrate the deep influence of Persian culture and language in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Due to the expansion of social developments and communication, since the past time up to now, a noticeable part of people in Iraq, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Pakistan use this language, or at least are familiar with it. This is not merely related to the verbal communication, but considering the link between language effects and cultural transfer, as aspects of soft power, then we can firmly point to the ultra-regional influence of Persian culture in the Muslim world and even the European geographical areas.

Pre-COVID Performance and Risk Assessment of Asset Management Companies; Evidence from an Emerging Market

Fouzia Hadi Ali, Javeria Barkaat, Majid Ali et al.

By using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL), and the Emerging Market Z-Score Model, we have examined the performance and factor of riskiness of Pakistan's asset management companies, for the years pertaining to 2013-2018. Moreover, we also tested the stability of the ARDL model. The findings reveal that microeconomic and macroeconomic factors have a long-run impact on the performance of asset management companies (AMCs). Besides this, the Emerging Market Z-Score Model also categorizes the asset management industry in the safe zone, which indicates that the industry has no probability of default. This study was delimited to Pre-COVID data available for asset management companies that were taken into consideration. We can arguably conclude that the Post-COVID performance, and riskiness of AMCs might have inconsistent outcomes with our study. This study's findings may encourage, and aid investors, fund managers, and market makers to revisit their long-term investment patterns, keeping in mind the post-COVID short term volatility dynamics of the industry, which was the primary limitation of this study.

The Partnership Paradigm Is A Unified Field Theory For Human Betterment: How It Works in the Minnesota Climate Crisis Movement

Terry W Hokenson

“Intersectionality” is a byword of activists today. While we continue to ply our special causes and organize our various turfs, we are no longer content or even able to isolate ourselves within them as if they were solitary silos. These days most of us realize our causes and constituencies intersect. We attend each others' hearings, workshops and marches, trade ideas across the spectrum, form coalitions, and share hearts and minds on a digital scale that collapses time. We connect dots innumerable as the pixels in a picture, while the clouds grow darker and the lightning strikes nearer.

Environmental innovation in chains and networks : assessing determinants and performance implications in Dutch food and beverage firms

E. Grekova

Challenged by the increasing scale of environmental degradation and corresponding stakeholders’ pressure, firms are increasingly integrating environmental concerns into their operations and into the relationships with external partners. Mainly through the theoretical lens of the Resource-based view and its spins-offs, this dissertation focuses on environmental innovation and environmental management (EM) that involves supply chain partners as means of promoting sustainable industry growth, using the Dutch food and beverage processors as a subject of the study. In–house environmental innovation and supply chain-oriented EM have a promising potential to induce sustainable growth in the industry because they are increasingly connected not only to improved environmental but also to an improved economic performance. However, the implications of environmental innovation and supply chain-oriented EM for the firm performance are not clear-cut and require further investigation. Prompted by the promising potential of environmental innovation and supply chain-oriented EM, the current research agenda focuses on their determinants: internal organizational capabilities and external factors (such as the roles of public policies, consumer demand, and other stakeholder pressures). Therefore, the present dissertation aims to investigate determinants of environmental innovation and of supply chain-oriented EM and their impact on firm performance. Chapter 2 illustrates in a dynamic perspective how changing institutional pressures and internal organizational factors influence the development of chain-oriented EM. Overall, institutional pressures are proven to be an important determinant. However, pressures on different levels vary considerably with respect to their impact. We found that pressures from supply chain partners and increasingly from long-term public–private environmental covenants significantly influence the implementation of supply chain-oriented EM. Interestingly, regulative institutional pressure from public authorities appeared to have no impact on supply chain-oriented EM. These findings are of particular interest as they suggest that Dutch public policy has chosen to rely on a responsibility culture, initiative, and self-organization, rather than on direct steering. This policy setting seems to work since our data evidence a progress in the implementation of supply chain-oriented EM. Furthermore, the findings show that food processors with more developed EM systems, associated with the presence of continuous improvement capabilities, are more likely to advance their EM by implementing supply chain-oriented EM. In course of time, as firms increasingly consider the implementation of supply chain-oriented EM as appropriate behaviour, institutional pressures become less influential and internal organizational factors become crucial to enable the implementation of supply chain-oriented EM. Chapter 3 offers further insights into organizational capabilities for supply chain-oriented EM. Prior research rarely considered how firms use their existing capabilities and the capabilities developed within their environmental strategy to come up with new and better ways to reduce the environmental impact. We investigate whether the integration of environmental concerns within the firm can provide an additional impetus to the implementation of supply chain-oriented EM, when combined with innovative orientation. In this context, we assess performance implications of capabilities for supply chain-oriented EM. Compared with the past research, we consider supply chain-oriented EM as an organizational capability for the integration of supply chain partners into EM, not as a set of environmental practices. The findings show that the development of supply chain-oriented EM is supported by both capabilities of innovative orientation and environmental integration and is accelerated by their combination. Furthermore, integration capabilities on in-house and supply chain levels appeared to be interconnected. The capability to integrate environmental concerns within the firm induces the integration of environmental concerns in the supply chain relationships. Finally, it is shown that the overarching capability to engage supply chain in EM pays off. This capability is induced by the implementation of interconnected environmental practices that involve supply chain partners (green purchasing, environmental collaboration with customers, and eco-design). Chapter 4 advances the understanding of the impact of supply chain-oriented EM on firm performance by introducing in environmental research the problem of appropriation of benefits created by the partners. Grounded in the Resource based view spin-offs, we claim that supply chain-oriented EM can enhance the performance of the focal firm not only directly, but also indirectly. The indirect relationship implies that supply chain-oriented EM stimulates the focal firm to implement more environmentally sustainable processes that in turn contribute to firm's performance. We found that supply chain-oriented EM involving customers can induce in-house environmental innovation that results in strong performance improvements. Interestingly, supply chain-oriented EM involving suppliers brings about weak performance improvements as a result of appropriation of the advantage realized by suppliers. Therefore, supply chain-oriented EM involving suppliers has a limited value and potential for Dutch food processors. Possibly, supply chain-oriented EM involving suppliers can induce process changes among suppliers, not focal firms. In this context, Chapter 4 illustrates the necessity to integrate the characteristics of supply chain actors into the research on the implications of supply chain-oriented EM. The findings regarding the impact of supply chain-oriented EM on the sustainability of internal operations have a link with firm performance. Supply chain-oriented EM that involves suppliers was shown to induce no significant improvements in environmental sustainability of operations among food processors. Unlike supply chain-oriented EM involving suppliers, supply chain-oriented EM involving customers has an indirect effect on the firm performance via environmental innovation. Firm’s network can be seen as a rich source of knowledge. Having access to knowledge and resources of the partners in supply chains and networks does not imply that a firm can appropriate (i.e. capture) corresponding benefits that could enhance environmental sustainability of in-house operations and performance. The exploitation of external knowledge requires the development of organizational capability to realize the value of new external knowledge, assimilate it and ultimately exploit it – absorptive capacity. Chapter 5 brings absorptive capacity into the discussion regarding the role of external partners in environmental innovation. Environmental innovation can also rely on internal knowledge sources. Development and accumulation of internal knowledge can be supported by the continuous improvement capability vested in the EM system. Therefore, Chapter 5 informs the discussion of the roles of internal and external knowledge for environmental innovation by considering organizational capabilities for knowledge sourcing: absorptive capacity to exploit external knowledge and continuous improvement to develop and accumulate internal environmental knowledge. The findings demonstrate that Dutch food processors develop environmental innovations relying on both external knowledge in their network tapped with the help of absorptive capacity and on internal knowledge built within the EM system with the help of continuous improvement capabilities. These findings challenge the presence of a substitution effect between internal and external knowledge. We expand the research on the determinants of environmental innovation by considering not only different knowledge sources but by providing insights into the knowledge sourcing process. Overall, the dissertation evidences an increasing importance of internal organizational capabilities to enable sustainable industry growth. Internal organizational capabilities appeared to be decisive to induce environmental innovation and supply chain-oriented EM. Also the appropriation of benefits created in cooperation with external partners and exploitation of external knowledge require certain organizational capabilities. In the earlier periods of corporate environmentalism, external pressures were of primary importance to induce the reduction of the environmental impact. Nowadays, the increasing role of organizational capabilities implies that a lot of power is concentrated in the hands of managers. For public policy, these findings suggest a focus on the development of instruments to stimulate the accumulation of organizational capabilities and capacity building.
