Measuring public sense-of-gain with urban renewal from the low-carbon perspective: a case study of Fuzhou, China

Xiaojuan Li, Yun Lin, Jiajing Lu et al.

Abstract China’s rapid urbanization has intensified energy consumption and carbon emissions, underscoring the urgency of low-carbon urban renewal strategies. The impacts of urban renewal on the community deserve to be evaluated to inform the mode and direction of implementation. However, the knowledge base lacks a comprehensive framework for evaluating the public sense of gain (SOG). This study aims to develop and measure indicators of public SOG in low-carbon urban renewal. A questionnaire survey was conducted among residents from different occupations, and an empirical study was carried out in Fuzhou. Both traditional fuzzy and cloud model-based fuzzy comprehensive evaluation methods were applied. The results showed that the economic dimension exerted the strongest influence, with an expected value of 4.04 in the cloud model. In addition, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to perform a first-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), which validated the internal structure of the SOG evaluation system. All standardized loadings exceeded 0.6, and composite reliability (CR) values exceeded 0.8, verifying the model’s good fit. The proposed evaluation framework helps fill a methodological gap and provides a rational tool to measure public SOG in low-carbon urban renewal. The findings could support more inclusive and sustainable urban redevelopment practices and offer practical guidance for policy and implementation.

Using AI to identify moral categories in ancient taboo lists

Yitzhaq Feder

Abstract The past two decades have seen an emergence of sophisticated theories for understanding the multiplicity of concerns that characterize human morality. While these frameworks aspire to identify universal moral foundations, it is questionable whether they are adequately representing the full range of moral concerns present in non-Western societies. The present research sought to evaluate the potential of a bottom-up (data-driven) methodology for identifying moral categories based on textual evidence from traditional societies. In particular, our point of departure was the existence of ‘taboo lists’ – inventories of behaviors incurring divine punishment – that have been found in ancient (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Israel) and contemporary ethnographic sources. The extrapolation of general categories based on these lists was carried out by artificial intelligence (AI) models. The performance of this new inventory of moral categories was evaluated by human respondents and additional AI models in comparison with existing frameworks. The results of these experiments demonstrated a human-like competence of AI models to both generate and use moral categories. More importantly, the success of the novel inventory confirmed the viability of a bottom-up approach for the study of human morality.

Paintings in naked-eye virtual reality: a parallax view between the surface and volumetric depth

Yiwen Wang, Huiyu Zhang

Abstract This article explores a subgenre of naked-eye virtual reality (VR) video that features two-dimensional paintings in a three-dimensional space and is circulated on the Chinese video streaming website Bilibili. In contrast to traditional VR, which requires the spectator to wear a head-mounted display, naked-eye VR offers a stereoscopic view on the screen, eliminating the need for VR glasses. The apparent incongruity between the screen’s physical flatness and the volumetric depth of the painting becomes even more pronounced when the naked-eye VR image emphasises the painting’s inherent two-dimensionality. Employing an interdisciplinary humanities’ method that connects media archaeology, film studies, art history, and the field of science, technology, and society, this paper delves into this distinctive juxtaposition between the painting’s flatness and the volumetric depth characteristic of naked-eye VR, a subgenre that remains mostly uncharted in the field of film and media studies. Taking a media archaeological perspective, this paper introduces a parallax media history, suggesting that the aesthetics of VR can be traced not only to the stereoscope but also to scroll paintings, which are paradoxically defined by their flat compositions. In addition, naked-eye VR references pictorial traditions by generating a spatial illusion that leads spectators to feel as if they are delving beneath the surface of a painting, transitioning from spatial extensivity on the x-y axis to perceived depth along the z-axis. This oscillation between surface and depth is engendered by the horizontal parallax rooted in binocular disparity, thereby positioning naked-eye VR as a “parallax media.” In analysing the illusion created by naked-eye VR, this paper proposes a paradigmatic shift in the framework of media study from conceiving of an image as a mirror to experiencing it as a door, representing the oscillation between volumetric depth and two-dimensional surface.

Objects as Agents (Some Comments on O.L. Gubarev’s Response)

D. V. Puzanov

This article builds on the earlier discussion about the actor traits associated with North Germanic weapons. The historical theories and evidence used by O.L. Gubarev to support his approach are analyzed. It is argued that he seems to echo the historiographical tradition relying on oversimplified a priori assertions, rather than a comprehensive analysis of the concept of “living” things in certain cultures. In his polemical response, he misinterpreted some historical sources and the views of other researchers, while also presenting his own controversial ideas as undeniable facts. In conclusion, it is suggested that the beliefs in the ability of inanimate things to have person-like qualities and play an actual social role, the distinction between living and non-living nature, as well as the practice of attributing souls to non-living entities, should be regarded as separate problems that are not clearly related in all cultures.

A national study of New Zealand primary-school teaching professionals’ experiences of offensive behavior at the workplace

Mark Rahimi, Ben Arnold, Marcus Horwood

Abstract Although a reported concern, few studies have investigated both prevalence and moderating variables associated with offensive behaviors experienced by teaching professionals. This study analyzed 2866 survey responses of New Zealand teaching professionals in 991 primary schools to determine the prevalence of key offensive behaviors against teaching professionals, the main perpetrators of these offenses, and the impact key socio-demographic variables had on victimization. The findings indicate that particular groups of teaching professionals, and those in urban schools—are more likely to experience certain offensive behaviors. The varied nature of offensive behaviors experienced warrants intervention within the school and the broader community.

The qualitative characteristics of the water of Lake Habbaniyah

Yazan J. Y, Qassem A. Raml

The presence of lakes has some advantages and disadvantages, which are reflected on the quality and quality of water, and then restrict it to some different uses. Lake Habbaniyah worked on changing the properties of the water in it and raising the values of most of the elements, and it affected the water quality of the Euphrates River, as the value of the salts increased from (431) mg / liter at the entrance to the lake, to reach (597) mg / liter when it exited the lake at the canal The flies regulator, as all sites indicated bacterial contamination of the lake water, the number of colon bacteria ranged between (930-300) cells/mm. Most of the water ions fall within the permissible limits for drinking purposes (human-animal), as for biological pollutants (colon and fecal bacteria), their presence is conclusive evidence of microbial contamination of water, which restricts the use of lake water for drinking purposes. For agricultural purposes, and for building and construction purposes, as for industrial purposes, there is a limited restriction for some industries that require water of certain specifications that are not available in lake water. As for the presence of coliform and fecal bacteria, it restricted the use of lake water for some uses, especially for drinking purposes.

Co-producing knowledge in health and social care research: reflections on the challenges and ways to enable more equal relationships

Michelle Farr, Philippa Davies, Heidi Andrews et al.

Abstract Researchers are increasingly encouraged to co-produce research, involving members of the public, service users, policy makers and practitioners in more equal relationships throughout a research project. The sharing of power is often highlighted as a key principle when co-producing research. However, health and social care research, as with many other academic disciplines, is carried out within embedded hierarchies and structural inequalities in universities, public service institutions, and research funding systems—as well as in society more broadly. This poses significant challenges to ambitions for co-production. This article explores the difficulties that are faced when trying to put ideal co-production principles into practice. A reflective account is provided of an interdisciplinary project that aimed to better understand how to reduce power differentials within co-produced research. The project facilitated five workshops, involving researchers from different disciplines, health, social care and community development staff and public contributors, who all had experience in co-production within research. In the workshops, people discussed how they had attempted to enable more equal relationships and shared ideas that supported more effective and equitable co-produced research. Shared interdisciplinary learning helped the project team to iteratively develop a training course, a map of resources and reflective questions to support co-produced research. The gap between co-production principles and practice is challenging. The article examines the constraints that exist when trying to share power, informed by multidisciplinary theories of power. To bring co-production principles into practice, changes are needed within research practices, cultures and structures; in understandings of what knowledge is and how different forms of knowledge are valued. The article outlines challenges and tensions when co-producing research and describes potential ideas and resources that may help to put co-production principles into practice. We highlight that trying to maintain all principles of co-production within the real-world of structural inequalities and uneven distribution of resources is a constant challenge, often remaining for now in the realm of aspiration.

Digital studies and transcontextualization of the humanities: The case of organology

Sanela Nikolić

AbstractThis research starts from the observation that Bernard Stiegler’™s general organology draws from the philosophical rethinking of the original practice of organology in musicology. Stiegler’™s main philosophical concepts that led to the establishment of general organology, as well as the trajectory of development of Stiegler’ general organology from his musical/musicological experience are discussed and explained. The main claim of this article is that the philosophical platform of general organology has an activist potential for the revitalization of the contemporary humanities and the transformation of the humanities into digital studies. This transformation takes place in the manner of two-level transcontextualization. The first level concerns the transcontextualization of the musicological organology into the general organology as a philosophical platform for understanding the phenomenological and ontological questions of a human being in the world mediated by digital technology. The second level concerns the activist potential of the general organology in relation to the humanities. The transformation of the humanities into digital studies is enabled through the transcontextualization of the general organology as the new, revitalized philosophical ground of the humanities that are dealing with the conditions of humanity in our contemporaneity. This means that digital studies involve not only the digital mediation of the knowledge, but researching that should be implemented in improving the humans' skills, knowledge, attention, and perceptive capabilities through digital technologies.

The Christian presence in North Africa under Almoravids Rule (1040–1147 CE): Coexistence or eradication?

Tarek Ladjal

This paper attempts an introspection on the Christian presence in Almoravids North Africa (1040–1147 CE). It argues that, contrary to the thesis that the Almoravids mistreated the Christians in the Maghreb; the Christians in fact enjoyed a range of freedoms and privileges under the auspices of the Almoravids, strikingly different to the limited freedoms enjoyed during the prior rule of the Idrisids (788–974) of the Maghreb. The Christian presence in the Maghreb grew substantially under the Almoravids, and although a good number of them were uprooted and expelled from Andalusia, this paper argues that they were treated relatively well and received great support from the Almoravid administration. The paper offers insights into the Christian community in the Maghreb during Almoravid rule and the ways in which they were integrated into the social fabric of Almoravid society and the machinery of the Almoravids state.

Metodologie analizy nakładów i wydatków na badania naukowe - od wskaźników wkładu do wskaźników względnej pozycji

Benedetto Lepori
