Thi Thuy Hang VU*, Hai Ha HOANG, Thi Ni Na HOANG et al.

This article comprehensively reviews recent advancements in digital transformation in rural tourism research. It analyzes prominent studies, key authors, and influential journals while identifying potential future research directions. From a bibliographic perspective, the study used data extracted from the Scopus database. Analytical methods, such as co-citation and co-occurrence keyword analyses, were employed to evaluate the content and assess research performance. These techniques revealed discernible patterns of international collaboration. Research on digital transformation in rural tourism has grown significantly since 2017, with the first papers published in Malaysia and China. The number of articles increased sharply in 2021–2023. China leads with nine papers, followed by Malaysia, Spain, Poland and the United States. During the analysis period, 36 journals published articles on digital transformation in rural tourism. Some journals that published only one article but received the most citations included Journal of Tourism Futures, Cogent Social Sciences and Environment, Development and Sustainability. With a minimum co-citation threshold of two, the paper identified a cluster with 31 prominent authors. The study identified five key clusters of digital transformation in rural tourism: (1)-Digital Folklore and Smart Travel Technology Before and After the Pandemic, examining shifts in traveller behaviour and folklore digitization driven by COVID-19 disruptions; (2)- Digital Technology Solutions Supporting Green and Sustainable Tourism Development, highlighting eco-friendly innovations enabled by digital tools; (3)-Applying Information Technology in Developing Community-Based Rural Tourism, exploring IT's role in empowering local communities; (4)-Digital Communications and Marketing for Rural Tourism, understanding the impact of digital marketing strategies on rural destinations; and (5)-Geographic Information System (GIS) and Scanning Technology in Rural Tourism, investigating the use of spatial and scanning technologies for rural tourism management. Researchers should consider incorporating data from additional databases, such as Web of Science (WOS), Dimensions, and PubMed, to enhance the depth and comprehensiveness of future studies. Expanding the scope of bibliographic analysis to emerging digitalization areas within tourism could further strengthen the field’s relevance and scholarly value.

Ślady społeczności żydowskiej w Gniewoszowie. Perspektywa archeologii współczesności

Angelika Bachanek

Culture Hero Sartakpai: The Image in Altaian Folklore Revisited

Tamara M. Sadalova, Tatuna N. Pashtakova

Introduction. Altaian mythology is a distinct religious and mythological system, since historical and cultural ties of the Altai people go deep into the ancient and medieval history of Central Asian Turks and Mongols. The article analyzes Altaian myths centered around the culture hero Sartakpai whose image is widely known in folklore traditions of Southern Siberia and Mongolia. Goals. The work aims to identify mythological foundations in the system of cultural landscapes (or ethnocultural space) inherent to the Altai people. Materials and methods. To facilitate this, it is urgent to reveal mechanisms that sustain the religious and mythological tradition, and serve to select, preserve or remove certain elements in plots of myths, folktales, and legends. So, it is a combination of traditional folklore research methods and an interdisciplinary approach that proves instrumental therein. The paper examines multi-genre texts of Altaian folklore from a comparative perspective, and involves comparative materials of related cultures. This makes it possible to consider the Altaian religious and mythological system in its close relationship with the mythological world view, identify some new dimensions, and actualize relations between its ‘ancient’ and ‘new’ layers. Results. It is generally agreed that Altaian mythology is largely etiological by nature and tends to express worldviews and attitudes of the people’s distant ancestors. The Altaian system of cultural landscapes (or ethnic space) comprises a concept of its mythological development. Hierarchically arranged deities and spirits — each occupying a special niche in three-dimensional space — co-exist with culture heroes that had arranged (developed) certain places, rivers, lakes in the Middle World. And it is Sartakpai who proves a most popular hero of Altaian folklore and whose name is associated with origins of some natural objects. In Altaian mythology, he is viewed as a most active builder of the human-inhabited Middle World — and a native of the Altai. His image is creative, and it is him who had left behind lots of productive evidence in cultural heritage of the Altai people that survive to date, the culture hero himself being still perceived as a glorified historical figure rather than a mythological character. Therefore, the image of Sartakpai persists in present-day ethnocultural processes and discourse.

Tetracarpidium conophorum seed extract reduces intestinal absorption, and increases cellular trapping of glucose

Bamidele Stephen Ajilore, Olubukola Sinbad Olorunnisola, Abiodun Olusoji Owoade

Abstract Background Tetracarpidium conophorum is one of the numerous folklore medicinal plants for managing diabetes but the mode of action and bioactive compounds responsible for the antihyperglycemic property are missing in literatures. This study aimed at investigating the possible modes of its antihyperglycemic action using both in-vitro and ex-vivo methods. Powdered Tetracarpidium conophorum seed (TECOSE) was extracted with methanol using standard extraction procedure. Gas chromatography- Mass spectrometry (GCMS) analysis of the extract, and its effects on tissue glucose uptake, α-amylase, α-glucosidase and glucokinase enzymes were assessed using standard laboratory procedures. Results Seven heterocyclic compounds were identified by GCMS of which one is structurally related to sulphonylurea. TECOSE strongly inhibited α-glucosidase (IC50 = 1.90 mg/ml) but partially inhibited α-amylase (IC50 = 7.20 mg/ml) activities. Also, glucokinase activity and tissue glucose uptakes were significantly (p < 0.05) increased by TECOSE. Conclusions The results obtained deduced that antihyperglycemic action of TECOSE could be due to modulation of postprandial hyperglycaemia through inhibition of intestinal α-glucosidase, increasing glucokinase activity, improving peripheral glucose uptake by mimicking sulfonylurea action.

Tírdhreach, Teanga agus Taise Chríostaí: Gné na hInsinte i bhFilíocht Derry O’Sullivan

Máirín Nic Eoin

Is é cuspóir na haiste seo gné na hinsinte d’ealaín an fhile Derry O’Sullivan a chíoradh trí anailís a dhéanamh ar raon dánta as na cnuasaigh dá chuid: Cá bhfuil do Iúdás? (1987), Cá bhfuil Tiarna Talún L’Univers? (1994), “An Bhfuil Cead Agam Dul Amach, Más é do Thoil é?” (2009), Dúnann Dia a Dhoras Dé Domhnaigh (2014) agus Siúlóir Tine is Dánta Eile (2019). Aithnítear luach an idirdhealaithe a rinne Seán Ó Ríordáin nuair a mhaígh sé nach ‘insint dán ach bheith’, ach áitítear san aiste seo gur gné thábhachtach den nuafhilíocht í an insint mar sin féin, agus gur modh léirithe atá lárnach go maith i saothar Derry O’Sullivan í. Trí dhíriú ar dhánta a bhfuil an fócas ar shonraí fisiciúla nó ar ghnéithe den tírdhreach, feictear gur minic gurb í timpeallacht ábhartha ‘eachtraí’ an dáin an t-ardán a chuireann ar chumas an fhile scód a scaoileadh lena shamhlaíocht bhisiúil. Tarraingíonn O’Sullivan ar ábhar dírbheathaisnéiseach go minic, ach ní hí an mhiméis ná an fhéinfhaisnéis is feidhm don fhilíocht aige. Ina ionad sin, is amhlaidh a bhíonn a chur chuige cumadóireachta ag claonadh go láidir i dtreo an osréalachais, agus an t-eispéireas comónta á chlaochlú ina eachtra mhéaldrámata nó ina bhraistint aduaine. Pléitear an ghné láidir fhísiúil sna dánta agus an earraíocht a bhaintear as íomhánna agus tuiscintí Críostaí. Críochnaíonn an aiste le háiteamh gur mhithid a thuilleadh airde a thabhairt ar fhilíocht O’Sullivan, duine de bhuíon filí Gaeilge atá ar imeall na canóna.

Toxicity and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of a polyherbal formulation commonly used in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria

O.M. Ighodaro, T.S. Ujomu, F.O. Asejeje et al.

A polyherbal formulation mainly composed of Hibiscus sabdariffa and Aloe barbadensis commonly patronized by some staff and students of a College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria was evaluated for its toxicity status and bioactive constituents. Its safety was assessed using acute and sub-chronic toxicity models in Wistar rats while Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS) was used to identify the bioactive constituents. Findings showed that oral administration of the polyherbal formulation did not cause any notable behavioral changes or mortality in the animals during the acute toxicity testing. Similarly, statistical analysis of the data obtained showed that sub-chronic administration of the polyherbal formulation did not cause any significant changes in the serum activities of liver-function enzymes, hematological markers, serum electrolytes and other evaluated blood-chemistry indices in the experimental animals compared to those of their control counterparts. These observations were substantiated by the liver photomicrographs which showed that treatment of animals with the polyherbal mixture did not induce any visible lesions or derangements in the examined organ. Besides, GC–MS screening of the polyherbal formulation revealed compounds with known biological effects which are associable with the locally acclaimed therapeutic applications of the formulation. The outcome of this study therefore suggests high safety for the investigated polyherbal mixture and thus supports its usage in folklore medicine.

The Hagionym Khyzir-Ilyas in the Local Traditions of Tatars

Guzaliya S. Khaziyeva

The article examines the hagionym Khizir-Ilyas featured in the Tatar folk culture. The study of folklore and ethnographic data, primarily texts of charms, suggests that there are several other local variants of this name: Gөzer-Ilyas, Kozer-Ilyas, Khuzer-Ilyas, Khser-Ilyas, Khyzyr-Ilyas, Kodyrata, Kydyr ata, Kodyrat babai. An ethnolinguistic analysis enables to restore the folk image of the corresponding character by revealing its functional traits, individual features and background. In the texts of local Tatar traditions, Khyzyr-Ilyas is the spirit of the road, a mysterious invisible stranger helping those in need. In addition to patronizing travelers, Khizir-Ilyas also performs other functions: he serves as an intermediary between man and Allah, protects people from illness and misfortune, provides them with prosperity and good luck. The most essential attributes of Khizir-Ilyas are his white clothes and a whip, which is a symbol of the expulsion of all evil. According to popular beliefs, Khyzyr-Ilyas lives in fields, and appears in person on Fridays, which is a distinctive temporal mark. The study traces the parallels of the image of Khyzyr-Ilyas in the cultures of some other Turkic-speaking peoples.

Perception of Woman in Proverbs in Terms of Gender

Hanife Nâlân Genç

In the course of time, observations, experiences, and impressions about the general attitudes and behaviors of an individual become stereotyped and turn into the words which characterize a certain situation and/or events. These words reflect the viewpoint of one person against another, the world, and the society of which s/he is a member. From this perspective, proverbs and idioms contain the viewpoints, evaluations, and judgements about concepts, situations, and facts which societies develop within the context of socio-cultural issues. This research is based on the general screening model and emphasizes the perception of women in terms of gender in proverbs. The research analyzes how women are perceived in individual, domestic and social life or how they are made to be perceived by society. It is clearly seen from the research that proverbs and phrases about women are frequently evaluated within a domestic sphere and familial relationships. The perspective of a society toward women becomes integrated with the roles of women in social and domestic life. The gender perception of women in society has religious, economic, political, social, and cultural differences. There are also different perceptions about women’s sexuality, education, and familial bonds. Within this criteria, the thoughts and judgements about the concept of women in proverbs are either affirmative, negative, or a combination of the two. This research finds that the situation of women in proverbs is mostly determined by a brother, father and/or a husband in a male dominated famil

The wolf's jaw: an astronomical interpretation of Ragnarok

Langer, J.

This paper aims to explain the eschatological outbreak that occurred during the X century in Scandinavia and northern Europe, which gave rise to a great iconography of Ragnarok, stemmed primarily from the Old Norse mythology. Our basic hypothesis is that various astronomical phenomena which occurred during in the VIII and IX centuries (total eclipses of the sun and passages of comets, both related to the constellation of Wolf?s Jaw - the Hyades) have aroused in the Nordic man his eschatological fears, impelling him to create a large amount apocalyptic images close of the year 1000 AD. We identified thirteen celestial phenomena (comet passages and total eclipses of the Sun) that may have been collected in the construction of the Ragnarok image among the ancient Norsemen. Our main methodology is the Cultural Astronomy, coupled with the prospects of the cultural history of myths. Aided by several studies on medieval astronomical folklore, especially those related to comets and eclipses. We also use some recent research on the theme of celestial myths and Old Norse Astronomy developed by European and American scholars, such as Gisli Sigur?sson, Thomas DuBois, Christan Etheridge and Dorian Knight.

School and the value of knowledge: Transformations in Belarusian jokes about education

Anastasiya Fiadotava

Over the past century Belarus has experienced a dramatic increase in educational level. Obtaining secondary education is now considered normal, getting a university degree is prestigious. However, such an attitude is relatively new to Belarusian society. Joke texts that date back to the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century indicate that formal education was widely considered useless, as it did not equip children with skills they needed in real life. Formal education was often contrasted with learning necessary skills at home, invariably in favour of the latter. In the Soviet era, formal education was made compulsory and suddenly became an integral part of people’s lives, but it still lacked a link with children’s future careers. Parents could not always appreciate the benefits of education, but had to send their children to school anyway.  The clash between the “old” attitude and the “new” reality produced jokes. Jokes that have emerged in the post-Soviet era reflect the omnipresence of education in contemporary Belarusian society. Some school jokes point to a greater understanding of the value of knowledge in modern children―yet it is often not the formal knowledge they are expected to get in school. Overall, school in jokes has become a setting where issues prominent in society at large come to the fore, even if this goes against the will of the educators.

Semiotics of Otherness in Japanese Mythology

Yoshiko Okuyama

This article examines the tropes of "otherness" embedded in Japanese myths and legends in which the protagonist has a physical or intellectual disability to uncover the sociohistorical attitudes toward such people in Japan. Using the theory of semiotics, I will explicate the narrative signifiers of "the Other" represented in Japanese mythology; examine the binary perceptions of disability in ancient myths, medieval literature, and latter-day folklore in Japan; and demonstrate how perceptions have changed historically. I argue that some of these antique perceptions of the Other that have survived in contemporary Japanese consciousness may be hampering our effort to understand human variation.
