On Avicennian Reform of Aristotle’s Metaphysics: what is metaphysics?

N. V. Efremova

This is the second part of the article (the first part see in Orientalistica [1]. It comprises the analysis of the approach made by Ibn Sina (Avicenna, 980–1037) to the «Metaphysics» by Aristotle. This approach was aimed to reconsider the work by Aristotle from the point of view of monotheism and shape the metaphysics as rigorous scientific discipline. The author focuses on the analysis of the introductory chapters to the «Theology / Metaphysics» (al-Ilāhiyyāt) of Avicennian encyclopedia «The Healing» (ash-Shifā’), which sets out the philosopher’s attitude on the essence  of metaphysics as a science, primarily its subject matter and goal to achieve.

Questions and Answers: Metaphysical Explanation and the Structure of Reality

N. Thompson

ABSTRACT This paper develops an account of metaphysical explanation according to which metaphysical explanations are answers to what-makes-it-the-case-that questions. On this view, metaphysical explanations are not to be considered entirely objective, but are subject to epistemic constraints imposed by the context in which a relevant question is asked. The resultant account of metaphysical explanation is developed independently of any particular views about grounding. Toward the end of the paper an application of the view is proposed that takes metaphysical explanations conceived in this way to characterize reality's structure. According to this proposal, reality's structure is partly constituted by a projection of our explanatory practices onto reality.

Metaphysical Interdependence, Epistemic Coherentism, and Holistic Explanation

N. Thompson

This paper argues for an alternative to orthodox foundationalist accounts of metaphysical structure as characterized by grounding relations. There are good reasons to take grounding to be a non-symmetric (rather than an asymmetric) relation, and to take facts to be related in complex networks of ground. These networks are closely analogous to the networks of justified beliefs characteristic of coherentism about justification. This position is called metaphysical interdependence. The chapter argues that grounding is an explanatory relation (rather than merely a relation which backs explanations), and that there are good reasons to resist the contention that explanation is asymmetric, including cases seemingly best described as cases of holistic metaphysical explanation. Metaphysical interdependence is a promising account of the metaphysical structure of reality.

Transformational Learning in Botswana: How Culture Shapes the Process

S. Merriam, Gabo Ntseane

Transformational learning as presented by Jack Mezirow has been critiqued for its Western, rational, and cognitive orientation. This qualitative study was conducted in the African nation of Botswana and examines how that culture shaped the process. In-depth interviews were held with 12 adults who acknowledged having an experience that had profoundly changed their view of themselves and/or their perspectives on the world. Spirituality and the metaphysical world, community responsibilities and relationships, and gender roles are 3 culturally specific factors embedded in how participants constructed the meaning of their experience; these factors are also evident in their changed perspective.
