Engaging with Film to Teach Students About Virtuous Outsourcing of Cognitive Tasks to LLMs

William Gopal, Michael Quinn

Abstract Recently there has been a call to deploy AI technologies in secondary education. An accompanying worry is that if students became overly reliant on LLMs, they would become cognitively deskilled - and this would be an impediment to the growth of their cognitive character. One pedagogical approach aiming to offset this worry consists of teaching students how to critically evaluate the outputs of LLMs while they are using them – the Use-First Critical Thinking approach (UFCT). We argue that UFCT alone cannot assuage this worry insofar as it misses an important, prior step in equipping students with the skills to be aware of, and reflect upon, by what lights decisions whether to delegate tasks to LLMs are appropriate. We propose an alternative pedagogical approach involving film, specifically Memento , which allows students to identify delegative choice points and what (in)appropriate delegation looks like.

Literary Translingualism in the United Arab Emirates: Anglophone Emirati prose and poetry

Doris Hambuch, Moza Al Tenaijy, Aisha Khamis Aldarmaki et al.

This study investigates the motivations of Emirati creative writers to choose the global language, English, rather than the UAE’s official language, Arabic, for their literary texts. Much scholarship has been dedicated to the role of English in the Gulf region, but hardly any of this research focusses on the arts. Drawing upon studies of anglophone literature from other countries where English is not an official language, content analysis, and a case study, this article identifies the reach for international audiences as the main motivation, followed by personal language command. Literary influence and genre selection are minor reasons causing Emirati writers to published in English. Situating the small but steadily growing translingual, or exophonic Emirati canon within the short local literary history as well as within a global anglophone context, the article also demonstrates that innovative uses of language may occur. Regional efforts to promote local authors along with changing publishing conditions will likely lead to an expansion of the studied canon in the near future.

Is This the Gate?: J. M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello and Its Operatic Adaptation

Xingyu Lin

Premiered at the 2024 Adelaide Festival, Is This the Gate? is an opera excerpt composed by Nicholas Lens and set to a libretto written by J. M. Coetzee. It is adapted from the last section of Coetzee’s novel Elizabeth Costello (2003), revolving around the eponymous character’s trial before the gate in the afterworld. This article explores the literary, musical and dramaturgical elements of Is This the Gate? and contends that the adaptation, despite its brevity and incompleteness, indexes and reworks some of the most important intertexts, localities and motifs that connect Coetzee’s early and late works. Allusions to Kafka and Dante frame the scenario for Costello in limbo—a state mirroring a writer’s late-in-life predicament—while references to Australia’s weather and fauna reflect Coetzee’s relationship to his South African roots and adopted home. Further, Costello’s conviction that she is “a secretary of the invisible” holds clues to Coetzee’s deployment of voices and fictional personae since his debut, Dusklands (1974). The last few acts of the opera excerpt evoke themes of desire and mortality that chime with Coetzee’s other Costello narratives, including his latest collection, The Pole and Other Stories (2023). The adaptation ends with Costello’s declaration of her subjectivity, which suggests a writer’s yearning and resolution to go beyond the threshold of life and death.

Defining digital humanities and examining its relationship with linguistics through the lens of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities

Jianwei Yan, Qidi Li, Haitao Liu

Abstract Digital humanities (DH) is an emerging interdisciplinary academic field that has gained prominence in recent decades. This study explores the evolution of topics, research impact, and attractiveness of DH through the lens of the journal Digital Scholarship in the Humanities (DSH), a leading platform for DH research, from 1986 to 2023 (in three phases: 1986–2003, 2004–2014, and 2015–2023). The study also examines the role of linguistic research in DH. The results reveal that: (1) the primary themes and trends in DH research have evolved from text encoding and analysis to critical studies of technology, infrastructure, and knowledge production; (2) the citation patterns demonstrate the growing influence and recognition of DH within the humanities and computer sciences; (3) European and North American scholars have dominated DH networks, but new centers and scholars are emerging in Asia, South America, and Oceania; and (4) linguistics-related publications have given less attention to specific linguistic features but have provided vital intellectual support for DH. This study provides a data-based perspective on the development and direction of DH, and demonstrates the value of linguistic methods for mapping scholarly fields over time. Based on these findings, suggestions are made for scholars interested in DH.

Are Digital Humanities platforms facilitating sufficient diversity in research? A study of the Transkribus Scholarship Programme

Joseph Nockels, Paul Gooding, Melissa Terras

Abstract To what extent do Digital Humanities (DH) platforms support access to diverse user cohorts? We take, as a case study, the Automated Text Recognition (ATR) platform Transkribus and its Transkribus Scholarship Programme (TSP), which provides free processing credits to eligible users. Using a mixed methods approach we address the following questions: What are the demographics of those using the TSP scheme? What work is enabled by such a scheme? How can this inform more equitable access to DH platforms? The findings demonstrate how ATR tools are currently used and made accessible. TSP applicants are overwhelmingly students (n = 111/156, 71.15 per cent) drawn from universities and research institutes, mostly in Europe, but are globally distributed; representing institutions that do not hold shares in Transkribus, and indicating a diverse user pipeline. Further work is required to increase potential benefits of the scholarship and to ensure sustainability. Increased dialogue between the Recognition and Enrichment of Archival Document-COOP and applicants would assist in the calculation of processing costs. We show financial—or in-kind—support is necessary to increase access to paid-for platforms, ensuring a diversity of DH research. We also provide recommendations for platform providers and funding bodies regarding access and the impact this can have, including locating a sustainable balance between absorbing the costs of maintaining DH or digital scholarship tools and providing sufficient support and training to further enable diverse research.

Determinants of the coproduction of public health during the COVID-19 pandemic: A mixed-methods study of students behaviors on a university campus

Benjamin Y. Clark, Robert Parker

This article explores the effectiveness of coproduction and co-delivery in public health, specifically in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic on a university campus. We investigate the types of cooperation between students and their university (a government entity) to promote and maintain public health during the pandemic, focusing on people's willingness to engage in coproduction activities and the effectiveness of these measures in reducing virus transmission. The study examines college students' behaviors and attitudes toward public health measures like masks, social distancing, and vaccinations. Our goal is to generate knowledge about coproduction's potential in supporting public health efforts in an institutional and congregant living setting during future emergencies. Evaluating observational and survey data from Oregon, the study finds that students were more likely than the general public to participate in coproduction activities. It also highlights the unique challenges and opportunities for coproduction on college campuses. The article concludes by guiding future university administrators on effective communication channels to enhance responses during future pandemics.

Index of healthy eating and emotional eating in relation to psychological inflexibility in dance students

Félix Arbinaga, María-Isabel Mendoza-Sierra, Gabriela Fernández-Acosta

Abstract Dance places significant physical and cognitive demands on both students and professionals. These demands increase dancers’ susceptibility to a variety of problems. Between them, the prevalence of eating disorders in dancers of various dance genres is significant. In this context, emotional eating is a common problem among people struggling with weight issues. On the other hand, a construct that has been shown to be relevant is Psychological inflexibility. Psychological flexibility refers to the possibility of fully embracing unpleasant private events in the present, without attempting to modify them. The aim of this paper is to determine the different components of emotional eating and the healthy eating index as a function of psychological inflexibility in dance students. This was a cross-sectional study using non-probabilistic sampling. One hundred fourteen dance students enrolled in conservatories or dance schools participated in the study. Evaluations were conducted using the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, the Healthy Eating Index for the Spanish population, and the Eating and Appraisal Due to Emotions and Stress Questionnaire. Data were collected in person and online format. No differences in psychological inflexibility were observed between men and women. While women showed greater utilization of food to regulate emotions, they did not differ from men in scores on the healthy eating index. Students with high psychological inflexibility reported greater utilization of food as a regulator of emotions. No differences were found in healthy eating according to psychological inflexibility. It is recommended to transform dance conservatories into healthy spaces by promoting habits that facilitate students’ well-being. Faculties can help in the pursuit of excellence by aligning performance goals with research findings and improving holistic care.

Critique of Suha's theory about assigning Anfal to the Prophet (may God bless him and his household and give them peace) based on verse 1 of Surah Anfal

Najmeh Ansari, Alireza Mokhtari, Mohsen Jliani

The Anfal is one of the most important economic issues in Islam, and it constitutes a large part of the wealth of society, and the issue of ownership and the right to own property, as it has a special economic importance, and in fact the Anfal is one of the largest financial resources of the Islamic government, which is identified in the first verse of Surat Al-Anfal In this research, we have used the descriptive analytical method of Suha's theory and its forms in the book of Qur'anic criticism, that "the Anfal includes prominent things and the price of the spoils that the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, chose for himself as a sword", "a beautiful and expensive woman, luxurious clothes, wonderful horses and the like", The research came as an answer and criticism of that theory, based on the significance of the Qur’anic verses and their narrations, the dignity of revelation and the context of the verse, and we concluded an important conclusion in this article that is summed up in the fact that the Anfal is the property of the Prophet (may God bless him and grant him peace and his family) and the people of the house (peace be upon them) in the name of the imam, but for the benefit of the people

Evolution of free indirect speech structures in English, American, and Russian literature

A.D. Alimova

Changes that free indirect speech underwent in English, American, and Russian literature during the 20th century were investigated. Both general and more specific (qualitative and quantitative) trends in the free indirect speech development were discussed. Free indirect speech was considered from a diachronic point of view, i.e., the study aims to identify a correlation between the patterns that could be relevant for literary translation from English into Russian and vice versa. Based on the results of the quantitative and qualitative analysis of free indirect speech contexts, it was demonstrated that free indirect speech has evolved. A notable increase in the degree of textual interference and in the variety of models employed was observed. Interestingly, the frequency of occurrence of free indirect speech structures in literary texts varies from decade to decade. Although there are some common trends in free indirect speech usage following the global tendencies in literature, its evolution depends on particular national literary traditions as well. The data obtained show that the most intense usage of free indirect speech segments is typical for the English literature. From the translation perspective, it is important that the general frequency and functional models of indirect speech usage can slightly differ even in texts of the same period or among the writers.
