Seeking safety, finding fear: Corpus-assisted discourse analysis of electoral immigration detention discourse in three countries

Linda Mussell, Sian Troath

Together, with the rise in populist politics and growing polarisation, immigration detention is a salient topic mobilised during elections to generate political support and votes in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), Australia and the United Kingdom (UK). The language used about immigration detention, refugees and asylum seekers has impacts on policy and on lives, including exclusion, criminalisation, detainment, detention and expulsion. Existing scholarship lacks research on the role election periods play in facilitating the transfer of immigration detention discourses and policy across the case countries. We ask: is there evidence that immigration detention discourses transferred between NZ, Australia and the UK during recent elections (2013–2024)? And if so, in what possible ways are these discourses reflected in subsequent policy decision-making? With focus on the examples of ‘stop the boats’ and ‘mass arrivals’ discourses, we argue there is evidence that Australia’s immigration detention rhetoric has developed roots in NZ and UK discourses and policy, echoing similar narratives of deservingness and legality, security and humanitarianism.

L’art urbain comme devenir de la participation citoyenne ?

Laura Sofía Martinez-Agudelo, Sophie Mariani-Rousset

Street art is an unofficial modality of civic participation. Its anti-establishment role and its place in the urban landscape suggest that drawing itself is a powerful and transgressive tool for reflection and communication. The choice of place/support for its realization engages a point of view and possible intended effects. During a survey carried out in 2023, we invited 48 Besançon residents to draw freely on paper supports representing 6 downtown locations/facades. Audiovisual recordings document the drawing in progress and the accompanying discourse. The aim was to mobilize collective representations and potential actions on these spaces (unknown, perceived, practiced and/or inhabited). What kind of thoughts, needs and desires do citizens have that inspire the development or detour (through drawing) of these places? A categorical analysis of the drawings and audiovisual registers reveals four modalities and pathways motivating citizen participation. In this way, under a communicative approach, this article proposes an artistic mediation device that can be incorporated into citizen consultation protocols and participatory approaches aimed at adapting or transforming urban spaces.

Specialist’s communicative competence: genre aspect

T. V. Anisimova

INTRODUCTION. For the needs of higher education, it is necessary to have a description of all the rhetorical genres in demand in the relevant professional communication, as a specialist's communicative competence directly depends on their ability to use stereotypes of institutional communication in their speech. Therefore, the aim of the study is to develop principles for selecting genre forms to create particular rhetoric necessary for forming the communicative competence of relevant specialists.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study used diagnostic and causal analyses, which were accompanied by the use of abstraction and modeling methods. The material for analysis consisted, on the one hand, of modern scientific research in the field of linguistic genre theory, and on the other hand, of extensive empirical material collected by the author in the process of writing textbooks on rhetoric.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. The research resulted in the formulation of a rhetorical approach to the construction of a genre system of particular rhetoric, which requires that first, the speech events characteristic of the work of the corresponding specialist be selected; then the obligatory (mandatory for this particular rhetoric) genres are identified. Next, poly-discursive genres (characteristic of several particular rhetorics, but having significant specific features in each rhetoric) and free genres (not tied to a particular discourse) are distinguished. Finally, peripheral genres (not mandatory for use, not tied to certain professionally significant situations) are considered last.CONCLUSION. The author concludes that in order to create genre classifications, it is necessary to use rhetorical criteria for their selection, reflecting the purpose of this discipline.

Integrating PLS-SEM and NVivo in Mixed-Methods Educational Research: A Comprehensive Evaluation of Quantitative and Qualitative Analytical Tools

Mahadi Hasan Miraz, Sanmugam Annamalah, Rohana Sham

Background/purpose. It revisits Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as a robust tool for analyzing non-normal data and small samples, offering predictive modeling advantages. This study also compares the merits, practical applications, and added value of both tools in tackling complicated research issues, notably in education and social sciences, rather than reviewing their techniques. Simultaneously, it evaluates NVivo as a leading qualitative data analysis (QDA) tool, focusing on its effectiveness in organizing, coding, querying, and visualizing diverse qualitative datasets. Materials/Methods. The study places both tools in real-world educational research settings to help researchers choose and utilize methodologies that align with their data and goals. This mixed-methods research employed two approaches. Method A utilized empirical data to assess PLS-SEM's performance using statistical metrics such as R², Q², and Composite Reliability. It compared PLS-SEM with MRA, CB-SEM, and Factor Analysis. Method B involved surveys, interviews, usability testing, and case studies to evaluate NVivo’s capabilities. NVivo was compared with ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, and Dedoose on parameters like coding flexibility, usability, visualization, and collaborative features. Results. The manuscript demonstrates how PLS-SEM can model latent concepts, such as student engagement, learning outcomes, and institutional support, while NVivo can analyze qualitative data, including interview transcripts, reflective diaries, and classroom discourse. NVivo outperformed competing QDA tools in advanced coding, data visualization, and integration features, with 72% of surveyed researchers preferring it for its effectiveness and usability. Usability testing revealed NVivo had a 30% higher task efficiency and a high user satisfaction score (8.5/10), despite a moderate learning curve. NVivo was particularly effective in thematic exploration and supported collaborative research. Conclusion. PLS-SEM proves to be a robust and adaptable statistical method for complex quantitative research, especially when data quality or sample size is constrained. NVivo stands out as a versatile and user-friendly QDA tool, enhancing the rigor and efficiency of qualitative analysis. Together, these tools offer a methodological advancement for researchers undertaking mixed-methods studies, promoting more accurate, predictive, and interpretable research outcomes across disciplines.

ANALYZING PATTERNS OF CONGRATULATORY STRATEGIES IN VIETNAMESE FACEBOOK WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Do Thanh Hien Le, Vien Truong

This study explores the patterns of congratulatory strategies related to wedding rituals on Facebook, a prominent platform within the Vietnamese community. With the increasing integration of information technology, Facebook has become a vital space for expressing emotions and fostering connections. Employing a descriptive research design, the study integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data analysis. Quantitatively, the frequency of semantic formulas used in congratulatory messages was calculated and compared across engagement and wedding announcements, with descriptive statistics applied to interpret the data. Qualitatively, an ethnographic approach was used to explore and analyze these strategies through observation and discourse analysis, identifying recurring themes and patterns. The analysis reveals seven distinct patterns, including two single-strategy patterns–using illocutionary force indicating devices (IFIDs) and offering good wishes–and five combined-strategy patterns that integrate IFIDs with offering good wishes, giving compliments, joking, and expressing positive emotions. These findings highlight linguistic and cultural features that showcase how Vietnamese users express care, pleasure, and affection in congratulatory comments, reflecting the preservation of cultural traditions in a digital context. This study contributes to the sociolinguistics field by providing insights into the intersection of social media and cultural expression, offering a novel perspective on Vietnamese culture in online communication. While the study is limited by the availability of data specific to Facebook wedding announcements, its findings offer valuable implications for understanding the role of social media in shaping and sustaining cultural practices.

Causes, manifestations, and healing strategies for psychiatric conditions in Zimbabwean Short Drama - Mari Kushinga by ZIYA Cultural Arts

Babson Ndhlovu, Vimbai M. Matiza

This paper presents a qualitative exploration of the representation of the causes, manifestations, and healing strategies of psychiatric conditions in Mari Kushinga, a contemporary Zimbabwean drama. Mental health challenges remain a pressing concern in present-day Zimbabwe, where increasing numbers of individuals exhibit symptoms of psychiatric distress. However, the underlying causes of these conditions often remain undiagnosed or are ambiguously interpreted, leading to uncertainty about appropriate therapeutic interventions. While many families turn to biomedical or postmodern methods of treatment, such as psychotropic medication, clinical counselling, and psychiatric institutionalisation, traditional explanatory models and healing systems continue to exert significant influence within communities. Drawing on Mari Kushinga (2024), a drama performed by ZIYA Cultural Arts Trust, popularly known as Vharazipi, this study interrogates how artistic performance mediates cultural understandings of mental illness. Anchored in the theoretical frameworks of postmodernism, psychiatry, and Afrocentricity, the analysis reveals that greed and the pursuit of ill-got wealth (kuromba/ukuthwala) are dramatised as principal causes of psychic disintegration. The drama further portrays traditional healing systems as central to restoring individual and communal equilibrium. The paper argues that Mari Kushinga serves not only as a mirror of contemporary Zimbabwean society but also as a critical site for negotiating the interface between indigenous epistemologies and modern psychiatric discourse.

Tacit Racism Toward Roma Students: The Case of a Turkish Public School

Ozan Uştuk

This study aims to reveal hidden racist practices within a Turkish public school and explores their perpetuation through daily interactions between teachers and Roma students. As part of an applied research project dedicated to empowering Roma children in the educational setting, the study employs discourse analysis to expose tacit racist discourses circulating within the school. Using participant observation, casual conversations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, the research reveals implicit discriminatory practices in classrooms. Teacher interviews expose a prevalent coping mechanism, i.e., denial, which reflects reluctance to acknowledge their role in perpetuating discrimination despite awareness of the structural inequalities faced by Roma students. While comprehending systemic challenges, the adherence of the teachers to the myth of meritocracy fosters cognitive dissonance, which results in a dismissive incomprehension of the realities of and occasional assignment of blame to Roma students. Cultural stereotypes and pseudogenetic explanations function as convenient means of rationalizing existing biases. Navigating cognitive dissonance, teachers frequently redirect their focus toward the behaviors of Roma people due to a sense of helplessness and the influence of the pervasive meritocratic narrative. This dynamic contributes to the perpetuation of institutional racism through the daily discourse of teachers, which inadvertently exacerbates this systemic issue.

The portrayal of diabetes in the Indonesian online press: a corpus-based discourse study

Restu Santyarini, Muchamad Sholakhuddin Al Fajri

Diabetes poses a substantial public health concern in Indonesia, standing as the third leading cause of mortality following stroke and heart disease. The media holds potential as a crucial tool for public education, influencing perceptions of health issues and dispelling stigmatization or misinformation surrounding individuals with diabetes. This article investigates the representation of diabetes in Indonesian online news articles by drawing on a corpus-assisted discourse studies framework. The study focuses on analyzing nominal and verbal collocates of diabetes. The findings reveal prevalent collocations, such as penderita (sufferer), pasien (patient) and penyakit (disease), which carry stigmatizing and derogatory connotations. Additionally, the study finds a predominant emphasis on behavioral discourses in discussions about diabetes, potentially contributing to societal stigmatization, while neglecting structural or societal representations. The media’s inclination toward individualized narratives may be driven by considerations of newsworthiness and a perceived need to enhance public awareness regarding behavioral actions linked to diabetes. The study emphasizes the importance of achieving a more balanced coverage of diabetes in Indonesian news media. Integrating portrayals that highlight structural issues into news narratives is crucial for fostering a comprehensive understanding, garnering public support for societal-level policy changes and reducing the stigma associated with people with diabetes.

Building a global community of health for all: A positive discourse analysis of COVID-19 discourse

Tayden Fung Chan, Yating Yu

‘A global community of health for all’ has become a dominant concept in China’s global health governance system. Although this concept has been investigated by several studies in different domains, little attention has been given to its discursive legitimation in China’s media communication from a linguistic perspective. To fill this gap, the present study employs positive discourse analysis to investigate how the aforementioned concept is legitimised via the predominant discourses associated with COVID-19 in state-run Chinese English-language newspapers. The findings show that the Chinese news media attempted to formulate the positive discourses, including cooperation as a win-win solution, people’s lives and well-being as the priority and science as the spirit, though the discourses may not resonate with some countries. The findings shed light on the use of language by the media in promoting official ideologies, projecting China’s national image and improving China’s international relations amid a global health crisis.

Repairing Deviant Journalistic Practice

Pauline Renaud

EN. The current iteration of the information disorder has created several challenges for news organisations, not least exacerbated pressure to identify, rapidly, false and fabricated content, which has found new impetus through social media. In the current context, the imperative is also, for many journalists, to maintain their authority as truth providers. However, when journalists, themselves, contribute to the dissemination of false information, adhering to that imperative is compromised. Prior research (Bennett et al., 1985) has shown that the media may attempt to repair problematic news stories that fail to conform to expectations of fairness, accuracy, and quality by reaffirming the boundaries of what is acceptable journalistic practice. This paper examines the case of French news outlets falsely reporting the arrest of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, a man suspected of murdering his family in April 2011. The analysis of metajournalistic discourse, or discourse about journalism, in news articles about the aftermath of the false scoop demonstrates that the French media repaired this news story through three main narrative strategies: minimisation, externalisation, and circumscription. By either mitigating their responsibility vis-à-vis this false story, distancing themselves from it, or presenting it as an isolated incident, news organisations normalise this example of journalistic misinformation as an unfortunate case of deviant professional practice in an otherwise mostly sound paradigm. However, limited reflection on greater implications for journalism and on how to prevent such shortcomings in future hint at the fact that the question of accountability is yet to form an intrinsic part of journalists’ professional identity in France. *** FR. ***

Proper Names as Demonstratives in Fiction

Maciej Tarnowski

DOI: https://doi.org/10.26333/sts.xxxvi1.05 In this article, I argue for two theses. The first is that, among different existing accounts of proper name semantics, indexicalism—a stance that treats proper names as indexical expressions—is best suited to explaining various phenomena exhibited by the use of proper names in fictional discourse. I will discuss these phenomena and compare the solutions offered by traditional descriptivist and causal-historical theories of proper name reference with those proposed by indexicalists. Subsequently, I will offer a novel account of indexicalism about proper names, which uses the apparatus of so-called hybrid expressions (Ciecierski, 2020; Künne, 1992; Predelli, 2006) as an alternative to traditional Kaplanian semantics for demonstratives. I offer an argument explaining why, among the variety of indexical views, one should favour such a hybrid theory over other available ones (e.g., Pelczar, Rainsbury, 1998; Rami, 2014) based on the analysis of “distributed utterances” (McCullagh, 2020) and statements that employ more than one fictional context.

Transcending invisible lanes through inclusion of athletics memories in archival systems in South Africa

Joseph Matshotshwane, Mpho Ngoepe

In countries like South Africa, sports have the power to transcend invisible lanes of politics and race and thus inspire citizens to come together. Sport, including athletics, has been demonstrated as an instrument of solidarity of fragmented cultures. However, while sport is of such significance, it is still minimally represented in public archival holdings in South Africa. Despite the mandate to transform the archival system, evidence suggests that much of the memories of sports heroes, especially that of athletes, have not been recorded. This qualitative study utilised oral history as a research method to explore the feasibility of building inclusive archives through the collection of sports memories. Athlete participants were identified through snowball sampling and data were collected using both oral testimony interviews from athletes with first-hand information and oral tradition augmented through document analysis. The results of the study indicated that there are stories and memories of many great South African distance runners that must be told and included in the archive repositories. Sadly, these stories have not been recorded in written words, as there is a tendency to perpetuate elitism by documenting mostly oral history of prominent members of society with political power. The study revealed that most of athletes’ memories from their running careers include certificates, trophies, medals, Springbok jerseys, newspaper clippings and pictures in their possession. It is concluded that until these sports archives and objects are considered as an important and unique element of South African history, they will forever be lost. Contribution: This study makes a contribution to the ongoing discourse of building inclusive archives in South Africa through the collection of athletics memories. The study is linked to the scope of the journal through propagating the inclusion of marginalised voices of athletics sports memories in mainstream archives.

Deixis in English Islamic Friday sermons: A pragma-discourse analysis

Asim Ayed Alkhawaldeh

Although deixis has received increasingly academic attention in linguistic research, its use in sermons, particularly in the Islamic context, has been largely underexplored. Therefore, this paper examined deixis in Islamic Friday sermons from the perspective of pragmatics and discourse analysis. Drawing on Levinson’s Framework, it aimed at analyzing three main types of deixis (personal, temporal, and spatial), focusing on their forms, features, functions, and frequency. The data were a corpus of 70 sermons compiled by the researcher from various online websites. The study employed qualitative and quantitative methods to meet the purpose of the study. The findings revealed that these three deictic types were relatively common in the language of the respective corpus with the personal type being predominant, deictically pointing to different referents whose interpretation was sensitive to the context in which they occurred. As an affectively powerful tool in the corpus, the preachers utilized deixis to serve a wide variety of functions on the discourse and pragmatic levels. In the corpus, deictic expressions worked as a discourse strategy to persuade the listeners by drawing their attention and engaging them in the message of the sermon and to signal and organize the flow of information in the ongoing discourse. They also served to enhance togetherness, intimacy, and politeness between the preachers and their audience. This study is hoped to present a good basis for further linguistic investigation of deixis in other languages and religions to illuminate how deictics work in sermonic discourse.
