We discuss the conditions for extra supersymmetry of the N = (2, 2) super-symmetric vector multiplets described in arXiv:0705.3201 [hep-th] and in arXiv:0808.1535 [hep-th]. We find (4, 4) supersymmetry for the semichiral vector multiplet but not for the Large Vector Multiplet.

This proceeding is based on the paper 0905.3044 [hep‐th]. We analyze the problem of the hierarchy of masses and mixings in orientifold realizations of the Standard Model. We present a bottom‐up brane configuration that can generate such hierarchies.

Abstract Gauge/gravity dualities are investigated from the worldsheet point of view. In [H. Kawai, T. Suyama, AdS/CFT correspondence as a consequence of scale invariance, Nucl. Phys. B 789 (2008) 209, arXiv:0706.1163 [hep-th] ; H. Kawai, T. Suyama, Some implications of perturbative approach to AdS/CFT correspondence, Nucl. Phys. B 794 (2008) 1, arXiv:0708.2463 [hep-th] ], a duality between 4d SYM and supergravity on AdS 5 × S 5 has been partly explained by using an anisotropic scale invariance of worldsheet theory. In this paper, we refine the argument and generalize it to lower dimensional cases. We show the correspondence between the Wilson loops in ( p + 1 ) -d SYM and the minimal surface in the black p -brane background. Although the scale invariance does not exist in these cases, the generalized scale transformation can be utilized. We also find that the energy density of open strings can be related to the ADM mass of the p -brane without relying on this symmetry.

The auxiliary/dynamic decoupling method of Kol (2006 Preprint hep-th/0609001) applies to perturbations of any co-homogeneity 1 background (such as a spherically symmetric spacetime or a homogeneous cosmology). Here it is applied to compute the perturbations around a Schwarzschild black hole in an arbitrary dimension. The method provides a clear insight for the existence of master equations. The computation is straightforward, coincides with previous results of Regge–Wheeler, Zerilli and Kodama–Ishibashi but does not require any ingenuity in either the definition of variables or in fixing the gauge. We note that the method's emergent master fields are canonically conjugate to the standard ones. In addition, our action approach yields the auxiliary sectors.

Abstract We discuss confining k strings in four-dimensional gauge theories using D5 branes in AdS 5 × S 5 , and D3 branes in Klebanov–Strassler and Maldacena–Nunez backgrounds. We present two results: The first that confining k string tensions in N = 4 can be calculated using D5 branes in AdS 5 × S 5 with a cut-off in the bulk AdS . Using an embedding of R 2 times S 4 ⊂ S 5 , we show that the D5 brane replicates a string of rank k in the antisymmetric representation. The second result shows that the S-dual calculation to hep-th/0111078 reproduces the action in the Klebanov–Strassler and Maldacena–Nunez backgrounds exactly, while providing a more natural manifestation of the string charge k .

The second del Pezzo surface is known by work of Tian-Zhu and Wang-Zhu to admit a unique Kaehler-Ricci soliton. Applying a method described in hep-th/0703057, we use Ricci flow to numerically compute that soliton metric. We numerically compute the value of its Perelman entropy (or Gaussian density).

We study cohomological gauge theories on total spaces of holomorphic line bundles over complex manifolds and obtain their reduction to the base manifold by U(1) equivariant localization of the path integral. We exemplify this general mechanism by proving via exact path integral localization a reduction for local curves conjectured in hep-th/0411280, relevant to the calculation of black hol e entropy/Gromov-Witten invariants. Agreement with the four-dimensional gauge theory is recovered by taking into account in the latter non-trivial contributions comin g from one-loop fluctuations determinants at the boundary of the total space. We also study a class of abelian gauge theories on Calabi-Yau local surfaces, describing the quantum foam for the A-model, relevant to the calculation of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

We discuss the low energy effective theory of an M5-brane wrapped on a smooth holomorphic four-cycle of K3 × T2, including the special case of T6. In particular we give the lowest order equations of motion and resolve a puzzle concerning the counting of massless modes that was reported in hep-th/9906094. In order to find agreement with black hole entropy and anomaly inflow arguments we propose that some of the moduli become massive.

We comment on the paper of Gellas et al, nucl-th/0002027, in which heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory results for the spin polarisabilities of the nucleon are given. That paper uses a definition which is different from the one used in papers by us, hep-ph/9908526, hep-ph/9909442 and hep-ph/0002133. In this comment we show that it is the latter definition, and not that of Gellas et al, that should be compared with the values of the polarisabilities extracted from dispersion relation analyses.

Abstract We proceed further with a study of an open supermembrane on the AdS 4 / 7 × S 7 / 4 backgrounds. An open supermembrane can have an M5-brane and a 9-brane as Dirichlet branes. In AdS and pp-wave cases the configurations of Dirichlet branes are restricted. A classification of possible Dirichlet branes, which is given up to and including the fourth order of a fermionic variable θ in hep-th/0310035 , is shown to be valid even at full order of θ. We also discuss an open M5-brane on the AdS 4 / 7 × S 7 / 4 backgrounds.
