Digitalisation and rural tourism development in Europe

Nuria Alonso Gallo , Lucía Vicent , David Trillo

This work presents an analysis of the digitalisation of the tourism sector and evaluates the potential of this process for rural areas of the European Union (EU). To do this, we explore aspects of both the supply and demand of rural tourism, proposing a regression model that incorporates indicators that relate the advance of digitalisation with changes in the weight and characteristics of the sector in the regions with low population density included in the NUTS level 2. The research results indicate a positive relationship between the digitalisation of the sector and the supply of rural accommodation, as well as a positive impact on the demand for these facilities. In addition, the study has made it possible to address the potential competition between traditional accommodations and digital platforms, revealing that the greater use of digital platforms for reservations does not negatively affect hotel occupancy rates. The findings underline the importance of digitalisation in the development of rural tourism and suggest possible lines of political action for promoting digital platforms in rural areas.

Comparing the effect of rhythmic stabilization and combination of isotonic technique on grip strength, pinch strength and dexterity of hand among middle aged healthy individuals - a randomized clinical trial

Sanjiv Kumar, Apoorva Dattatray Nale

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the effects of Rhythmic Stabilization and a combination of isotonic technique on grip  strength, pinch strength, and dexterity of hand among middle aged healthy individuals. Methods Forty middle aged healthy individuals were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were randomly allocated to two groups, with 20 in group A (Rhythmic Stabilization) and 20 in group B (Combination of Isotonic Technique). Treatment was given for 4 weeks, thrice a week. Outcome measures: grip strength, pinch strength, and dexterity were assessed by the Jamar hand dynamometer, the Pinch gauge, and the Perdue peg board, respectively. Outcome measures were assessed at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment. Results Notably, Group A participants showed a significant improvement in all outcome measures compared to Group B (p<0.05) when compared. Both the interventions were effective for dexterity outcome in both groups (p<0.05).  Conclusion: This study provides evidence that application of Rhythmic Stabilization improves grip strength and pinch strength.  This suggests that static Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) exercises performed on the fingers can improve dexterity, grip strength, and pinch strength in the middle-aged population. Highlights As age increases, there is decrease in grip strength and dexterity of a person. The grip strength, finger strength and dexterity are inter-related. The Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation increases strength of muscles. The static PNF exercises are more effective than the dynamic PNF exercises to improve strength of grip strength, finger strength and dexterity.

Individual cultural values as determinants of the attitudinal process in the restaurant: a different perspective for understanding brand equity formation

María Eugenia Rodríguez-López , Juan Miguel Alcántara-Pilar, Salvador Del Barrio-García

In an increasingly innovative competitive environment, it is necessary to know the customer in depth and to understand the intrinsic determinants of customer loyalty to the restaurant and brand equity. Culture is a fundamental factor in understanding behaviour, which has often attracted interest because of its moderating rather than determining role. The objective of this research is to examine the determinant role of customers' cultural values (long-term orientation, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance) on the customer's attitudinal process in the restaurant (satisfaction and loyalty) in order to understand how it indirectly affects through the attitudinal process the formation of a restaurant's brand equity. A sample of 540 customers was used, and a SEM model was estimated. The results indicate that cultural values, except for power distance, strongly determine the attitudinal process. Therefore, culture indirectly affects the formation of the restaurant's brand equity.

Mapping intangibilities in creative tourism territories through tangible objects: a methodological approach for developing creative tourism offers

Sónia Moreira Cabeça, Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, João Filipe Marques et al.

What can people express about their places through the objects that they valorise and link to their territory? Can objects create narratives about a place’s identity and collect significant cultural information that locate people in their places? Can such cultural mapping be a useful tool in the design of creative tourist offers? The Project CREATOUR held a series of Idea Laboratories with several entities that provide creative tourism experiences, approaching cultural mapping through objects as a tool for regional actors to discover what is ‘so special’ about their places, a way to link tourism offers with the community where they take place. These exercise lead participants to remark on the importance and idiosyncrasy of their regions and evidenced the importance of cultural mapping to a more sustainable offer and the overall marketing of destinations. Mapping intangibilities through tangible objects helped to capture what gives meaning to particular places

The aim of this paper is to debate the IT concept from the perception different agents of the tourism sector have about it and to see to what extent there is agreement or disagreement in the definition of the concept itself, its influence on the competitive improvement of destinations and future trends. In short, it intends to analyze the potential, but also to understand the risks and main challenges that the incorporation of IT can cause over current destinations. The work procedure involves asking experts in the tourism sector and in the academic world about the different thematic areas on IT and ITD: the definition of the concept and the welfare of its evolution in the immediate future, the characteristics and components of an ITD system, the role of the technological components in an ITD, the linking of IT with sustainability, the limits and risks of IT display, and the determinants and conditionings that destinations have for the development of IT strategies. The collected information has been obtained from the opinion of around thirty experts, with the purpose of gathering different points of view through the Delphi method: the academic specialists (belonging to national and international universities), those affected (from the case of study of the tourist municipalities of the province of Barcelona) and the facilitators (companies and organizations involved in the use of technologies to promote IT).

Economic and image impacts of summer Olympic games in tourist destinations: a literature review

Luciana Brandão Ferreira, Marina Toledo de Arruda Lourenção, Janaina de Moura Engracia Giraldi et al.

This article aims to verify in the literature related to the Summer Olympics the main economic and image implications for the destination hosting it. A qualitative exploratory research was carried out with the survey of scientific articles of the last twenty-five years in five different databases. The studies indicate economic and image gains and losses from hosting the games. As positive aspects, most of the studies mention those coming from Olympic spending that provided long-term gains for the resident population in the host locality and related to tourist activity. The most cited negative aspects are related to investments that generated benefits only in the short term or lack of investment in infrastructure. It is concluded that the preparation and implementation processes in each country are too different for the results to be uniform. In addition, the diverse methodological aspects of the articles also influence their results.

A pesquisa é exploratória e bibliográfica.
