Drawing on material ecocriticism, new materialism and eco-narratology, this article proposes an analysis of the narrative structure of the novel Gli increati by Antonio Moresco as a case of “Anthropocene storytelling”. Specifically, I consider the practice of walking as a prompt for the novel complex temporal and spatial dimensions. My discussion situates within a broader reflection on the recent challenges posed by the concept of the Anthropocene to traditional modern epistemologies, based on conceptual dichotomies and linearity. I propose that the novel serves as an example of a narrative organised not by the principle of causality, but by what I call “stratigraphic logic”.

Digital pathology and microscopy image analysis are widely employed in the segmentation of digitally scanned IHC slides, primarily to identify cancer and pinpoint regions of interest (ROI) indicative of tumor presence. However, current ROI segmentation models are either stain-specific or suffer from the issues of stain and scanner variance due to different staining protocols or modalities across multiple labs. Also, tissues like Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), acini, etc. are often classified as Tumors due to their structural similarities and color compositions. In this paper, we proposed a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) based Multi-class Tissue Segmentation model for histopathology whole-slide Breast slides which classify tumors and segments other tissue regions such as Ducts, acini, DCIS, Squamous epithelium, Blood Vessels, Necrosis, etc. as a separate class. Our unique pixel-aligned non-linear merge across spatial resolutions empowers models with both local and global fields of view for accurate detection of various classes. Our proposed model is also able to separate bad regions such as folds, artifacts, blurry regions, bubbles, etc. from tissue regions using multi-level context from different resolutions of WSI. Multi-phase iterative training with context-aware augmentation and increasing noise was used to efficiently train a multi-stain generic model with partial and noisy annotations from 513 slides. Our training pipeline used 12 million patches generated using context-aware augmentations which made our model stain and scanner invariant across data sources. To extrapolate stain and scanner invariance, our model was evaluated on 23000 patches which were for a completely new stain (Hematoxylin and Eosin) from a completely new scanner (Motic) from a different lab. The mean IOU was 0.72 which is on par with model performance on other data sources and scanners.

In the context of the rise of the novel in eighteenth-century Britain, this article examines the understudied production of Elizabeth Helme (c. 1743-1814), who enjoyed a long and successful career as a writer of novels, as a translator and essayist. Special attention will be paid to Helme’s reception in the English press and the translations of her novels into Spanish and French. It will further argue that Helme’s own practice as author, translator, and translated author configured a synergy of knowledge-building that allowed her to articulate her own style as a writer and posed a critical reflection about the art of writing, particularly in her non-fiction work that remains largely unexplored. More generally, Helme’s eclectic approach is indicative of the ways in which eighteenth-century translation and writing practice can foster reflection on literary theory and criticism by confronting the author with the function of their own work.

With the wide use of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in applications such as human machine interaction, simultaneous interpretation, audio transcription, etc., its security protection becomes increasingly important. Although recent studies have brought to light the weaknesses of popular ASR systems that enable out-of-band signal attack, adversarial attack, etc., and further proposed various remedies (signal smoothing, adversarial training, etc.), a systematic understanding of ASR security (both attacks and defenses) is still missing, especially on how realistic such threats are and how general existing protection could be. In this paper, we present our systematization of knowledge for ASR security and provide a comprehensive taxonomy for existing work based on a modularized workflow. More importantly, we align the research in this domain with that on security in Image Recognition System (IRS), which has been extensively studied, using the domain knowledge in the latter to help understand where we stand in the former. Generally, both IRS and ASR are perceptual systems. Their similarities allow us to systematically study existing literature in ASR security based on the spectrum of attacks and defense solutions proposed for IRS, and pinpoint the directions of more advanced attacks and the directions potentially leading to more effective protection in ASR. In contrast, their differences, especially the complexity of ASR compared with IRS, help us learn unique challenges and opportunities in ASR security. Particularly, our experimental study shows that transfer learning across ASR models is feasible, even in the absence of knowledge about models (even their types) and training data.

Boolean calculus has been studied extensively in the past in the context of switching circuits, error-correcting codes etc. This work generalizes several approaches to defining a differential calculus for Boolean functions. A unified theory of Boolean calculus, complete with k-forms and integration, is presented through the use of Zhegalkin algebras (i.e., algebraic normal forms), culminating in a Stokes-like theorem for Boolean functions.

When minimal length uncertainty emerging from generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) is thoughtfully implemented, it is of great interest to consider its impacts on {\it "gravitational} Einstein field equations (gEFE) and to try to find out whether consequential modifications in metric manifesting properties of quantum geometry due to quantum gravity. GUP takes into account the gravitational impacts on the noncommutation relations of length (distance) and momentum operators or time and energy operators, etc. On the other hand, gEFE relates {\it classical geometry or general relativity gravity} to the energy-momentum tensors, i.e. proposing quantum equations of state. Despite the technical difficulties, we confront GUP to the metric tensor so that the line element and the geodesic equation in flat and curved space are accordingly modified. The latter apparently encompasses acceleration, jerk, and snap (jounce) of a particle in the {\it "quasi-quantized"} gravitational field. Finite higher-orders of acceleration apparently manifest phenomena such as accelerating expansion and transitions between different radii of curvature, etc.

This paper presents the results of a transdisciplinary research conducted by scholars working in the humanities and experimental psychologists in order to find an interface between the needs of a qualitative approach (mainly based on the evaluation of stylistic features) and those of a quantitative analysis, in order to find useful features for testing different reading behaviors and for new hermeneutical enquiries. The results of our research, which was conducted in two Labs (Dahlem Institute for Neuroimaging of Emotion at the FU Berlin and the NewHums – Neurocognitive and Human Studies at the University of Catania), consistently differ from previous ones, as they focus on the whole multi-layered foregrounded texture of a poem and try to evaluate predictable differences in reading, re-reading behaviour and meaning-making processes. We present the FAM, targeting foregrounding elements in three main categories: the phonological, morpho-syntactic, and rhetoric. To identify those elements, four different text levels were taken into account, the sublexical level of phonemes and syllables, the lexical level of single words, the interlexical level of word combinations across longer distance (e.g. two lines), and the supralexical level of whole stanzas or an entire poem. In contrast to previous quantitative analyses on short, isolated sentences and texts, mostly expository in nature (‘textoids’), or on single words or segments, the text is considered as a whole, marked by density fields that work as milestones along a reading route.

Motivated by the existence of binary systems where a stellar-mass black hole is bound to a normal star, we selected four red giants with large radial velocity (RV) variation from the survey of SIM grid stars and monitored their RVs for several months. None turned out to contain a massive companion above 2.5 solar masses. The red giant TYC 9299-1080-1 with a large RV and a large proper motion is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 81 days. It is an extreme halo object moving at 350 km s$^{-1}$ almost directly toward the Galactic center. HD 206092 is a double-lined binary with a short period of 4.37 days. It belongs to the rare class of active RS CVn-type binaries with evolved primary components, apparently undergoing mass transfer. The X-ray luminosity of HD 206092 is about twice as high as the most luminous coronal X-ray emitters observed by ROSAT, including II Peg and the prototype star RS CVn. HD~318347 has a variable double-peaked emission-line spectrum (not a giant), while HD~324668 has a constant RV. Despite the overall good quality of the SIM survey data confirmed by a comparison with Gaia DR2 mean radial velocities, the few large RV variations are explained, mostly, by erroneous data. We discuss the significance of the non-detection of massive companions in the SIM grid sample and the associated work.

This paper (written in Russian) presents a survey of new and earlier results on fine zonotopal tilings (briefly, cubillages) of cyclic zonotopes. The combinatorial theory of these objects is of interest in its own right and also has a connection to higher Bruhat orders, triangulations of cyclic polytopes, and Tamari-Stasheff posets applied in the study of Kadomtsev--Petviashvily equations, and etc.

The aim of the article is to ponder, from a narratological perspective, on the fictional pacts in William T. Vollmann’s Seven Dreamsseries, i.e., on the virtual contract through which the author gives the reader, whether explicitly or not, instructions about the way in which his texts should be read, and that the reader, in turn, should follow to coherently process textual contents. By focusing on The Ice-Shirt, the first novel in the series, I will try to demonstrate how such a pact proves to be a problematic one, especially in that, throughout the whole text, fictional and non-fictional elements are constantly blended. Moreover, my aim is to address how on the reader’s part a ‘flexible’ approach, i.e., an approach that recognizes and builds on such a compresence of elements, allows him to navigate a text that reveals to be hybrid in nature.

Sergey Esenin is one of the most read Russian poets and at the same time remains one of the least studied. Thus, this article is devoted to the Baku period of Esenin's life, as he lived in Azerbaijan in 1924-1925. We have studied this period on the basis of newspaper articles, contemporaries’ memoirs, as well as scientific works of 60 Azerbaijani researchers. These works are important not only for the popularization of Esenin's poetry and classical Russian poetry in general, but also for Azerbaijani-Russian literary and cultural ties.
