The impact of self-centered factors on skepticism towards CSR claims during large-scale external crises

External crises create opportunities to strengthen companies’ commitment to society through CSR claims; however, consumers often perceive them as opportunistic. This study leverages the unique setting of COVID-19 to determine the power of consumer self-centered factors (i.e., concern about the crisis, personal impact, and political ideology) to predict situational skepticism towards CSR communication during a large-scale external crisis. An online survey of 1,000 consumers, analyzed using structural equation modeling, revealed that self-centered variables are key determinants to predict skepticism during external events. This effect is mediated by the inferential process of attributing motives. Their predictive power is consistent across the four CSR domains (i.e., customer, environment, employees, philanthropy). This study moves forward on the egocentric pattern projection and the attribution theories by addressing reactive CSR to external crises, a type of crisis that has been overlooked, and supports managerial decisions to mitigate CSR skepticism for potential external crises to come.

Facial graceful coloring of plane graphs

Let \(G\) be a plane graph. Two edges of \(G\) are facially adjacent if they are consecutive on the boundary walk of a face of \(G\). A facial edge coloring of \(G\) is an edge coloring such that any two facially adjacent edges receive different colors. A facial graceful \(k\)-coloring of \(G\) is a proper vertex coloring \(c:V(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\dots,k\}\) such that the induced edge coloring \(c^{\prime}:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\dots,k-1\}\) defined by \(c^{\prime(uv)}=|c(u)-c(v)|\) is a facial edge coloring. The minimum integer \(k\) for which \(G\) has a facial graceful \(k\)-coloring is denoted by \(\chi_{fg}(G)\). In this paper we prove that \(\chi_{fg}(G)\leq 14\) for every plane graph \(G\) and \(\chi_{fg}(H)\leq 9\) for every outerplane graph \(H\). Moreover, we give exact bounds for cacti and trees.

Factors Contributing to Quarter Life Crisis on Early Adulthood: A Systematic Literature Review

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was used for this research’s systematic review. We browsed a variety of academic studies that had been published in English language, published in PubMed, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, and Semantic Scholars that examine quarter life crisis. The literature search generated a total of 3100 publications. After removing duplicates and screening titles, abstracts, and full-text evaluation, there were 14 articles were included in the final analysis. The results were validated and examined. There were internal and external factors impacting quarter life crisis. The most powerful internal influences were commitment to purpose, spirituality, and anxiety. Meanwhile, social support, age, and gender were the most important external influences.Keywords: quarter life crisis, early adulthood, systematic literature review

Tourism Development and Rural Land Transfer-Out: Evidence from China Family Panel Studies

For a long time, the decline in agricultural comparative returns and the urban–rural development gap in China have prompted the outflow of rural labor. Land transfer policies, which allow farmers to retain their land contracting rights while transferring their management rights, were instituted to mitigate the impact of labor outflow on land use and agricultural production. In recent years, tourism has contributed to the diversification of the rural economy and has had an essential impact on the urban–rural allocation of elements such as labor. In this paper, we adopt a probit model to investigate the impact of tourism development on rural land transfer-out by using data from the China Family Panel Studies. The results show that the marginal effect of tourism development is significantly negative, indicating that the probability of rural land transfer-out was significantly reduced with tourism development. The results are still valid after a series of robustness tests. A mechanism analysis indicates that tourism development inhibits land transfer by enhancing local vitality, such as increasing the local employment of rural labor and promoting participation in agricultural production. Moreover, from the perspective of rural welfare and asset prices, further research finds that tourism development contributes to poverty alleviation and increases land value. These results suggest that tourism development inhibits land transfer while promoting rural sustainable development, helping to understand the impact of tourism on rural land use and household asset allocation from a more comprehensive perspective.

Analysis of Innovations in Russian Entrepreneurship / Анализ инноваций в российском предпринимательстве

In the context of increasing competition in the global world, the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, toughening economic sanctions, the role of innovation in the formation of competitive advantages of business entities, as well as regions and the Russian economy, is increasing. The purpose of this study is to analyze the innovations in Russian entrepreneurship, identifying the main trends and causes that constrain their development. Therefore, for the period of 2015-2019, large and medium-sized businesses have shown a steady negative dynamic of expenditures on innovative activities and the volume of innovative products. However, despite the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were positive trends in the development of innovation in 2020. Compared to 2019, the volume of investment in innovation increased by 8.2% and amounted to 2.1 trillion rubles, which led to an increase in the volume of innovative products by 5.7% and its achievement to 5.2 trillion rubles. The level of innovation activity has also increased and amounted to 10.8%. While in terms of intensity of innovation expenditures Russia ranks among the Top-10 European countries, in terms of innovation performance it is significantly behind other countries of the world. Russia's stable position in the Global Innovation Index is due to the strengths of innovation activity – high level of generation of new knowledge and staffing of the economy. The weak side is low innovative activity of entrepreneurship. On the contrary, there is a positive tendency in development of innovations in small business: growth of expenses on development and implementation of innovations, volumes of innovative goods, level of innovative activity. However, on the level of these indicators, small business is far below large and medium business in the country. For example, the intensity of costs in small business is less than 1%, the share of innovative products in its total volume is only 2.4%. Almost 2/3 of innovations fall on the share of product innovations. More attention is paid to product innovation, less to updating business process methods and management improvement. The main reasons restraining the development of innovations in Russian entrepreneurship are lack of own funds, high cost of innovations, imperfect mechanisms of interaction of small businesses with large and medium-sized businesses, with the academic sector, as well as inefficient innovation management system. Formation of effective system of innovation management considering strengths and weaknesses of innovation activity in the country, conditions of competitive environment should be considered as an important factor of increasing innovative activity of small and medium business and development of their innovative potential. / В условиях нарастающей конкуренции в глобальном мире, отрицательных последствий пандемии COVID-19, ужесточения экономических санкций возрастает роль инноваций в формировании конкурентных преимуществ субъектов предпринимательства, а также регионов и российской экономики целом. Целью настоящего исследования является анализ инноваций в российском предпринимательстве, определение основных тенденций и причин, сдерживающих их развитие. Так, за период 2015-2019 гг. в крупном и среднем бизнесе наблюдалась устойчивая отрицательная динамика затрат на инновационную деятельность и объемов инновационной продукции. Однако, несмотря на отрицательное влияние пандемии COVID-19, в 2020 г. в развитии инноваций наметились положительные тенденции. По сравнению с 2019 г. объем инвестиций в инновации увеличился на 8.2% и составил 2.1 трлн. руб., что и обусловило рост объема инновационной продукции на 5.7% и его достижение до 5.2 трлн. руб. Уровень инновационной активности также увеличился и составил 10.8%. Если по интенсивности затрат на инновации Россия входит в Топ-10 европейских стран, то по результативности инноваций значительно уступает другим странам мира. Стабильные позиции России в Глобальном инновационном индексе связаны с сильными сторонами инновационной деятельности – высоким уровнем генерации новых знаний и кадрового обеспечения экономики. Слабая сторона – низкая инновационная активность предпринимательства. В развитии инноваций в малом бизнесе, наоборот, отмечается положительная тенденция: рост затрат на разработку и внедрение инноваций, объемов инновационных товаров, уровня инновационной активности. Однако, по уровню этих показателей малый бизнес значительно уступает крупному и среднему бизнесу в стране. Так, интенсивность затрат в малом бизнесе составляет менее 1%, доля инновационной продукции в общем ее объеме – лишь 2.4%. На долю продуктовых инноваций приходится почти 2/3 инноваций. В большей мере внимание уделяется обновлению продукции, в меньшей – обновлению методов ведения бизнес-процессов и совершенствованию управления. Основными причинами, сдерживающими развитие инноваций в российском предпринимательстве, являются: недостаток собственных средств, высокая стоимость нововведений, несовершенство механизмов взаимодействия малого бизнеса с крупным и средним бизнесом, с академическим сектором, а также неэффективная система управления инновациями. Формирование эффективной системы управления инновациями с учетом сильных и слабых сторон инновационной деятельности в стране, условий конкурентной среды следует рассматривать как важный фактор повышения инновационной активности субъектов малого и среднего предпринимательства и развития их инновационного потенциала.

The Effect of Healthcare Data Analytics Training on Knowledge Management: A Quasi-Experimental Field Study

This study aims to provide practice-oriented evidence regarding the implementation of healthcare data analytics and its impact on the use of new data analytics tools and relevant analytical skills improvement. A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test controlled study was conducted in a large medical system in the eastern United States. Healthcare data analytics training program participants (N = 21) and a comparison group comprising trainee-identified peers completing comparable work (N = 27) were compared at the start of training and one year later. Results showed that both trainees and peers demonstrated improved healthcare data analytics skills over time, related to concomitant increases in their healthcare data analytics-related learning and performance goals. This study suggests that healthcare organizations aiming at successfully implementing a new data analytics infrastructure should provide well-designed training that enables trainees to develop specific learning and performance goals as well as improve relevant skills and ability to use new tools.

THE EFFECT OF MANDATORY IFRS ADOPTION ON EARNING MANAGEMENT AND POLITICAL CONNECTION AS MODERATION VARIABLES IN COMPANIES LISTED IN INDONESIA STOCK EXCHANGE

This study aims to look at the effect of IFRS mandatory adoption role on earnings management and to see the effect of political connections in influencing IFRS adoption of earnings management. The data used in this study came from companies listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2010-2015. This research uses a quantitative approach, using moderation regression and independent t-test to answer the research hypothesis. Discretionary accruals are used as earnings management proxies. To test the influence of political connections in strengthening IFRS adoption of earnings management, moderation regression was used as the model. The independent t-test results showed that there are insignificant differences in earning management after three years mandatory IFRS adoption in Indonesia. The first regression equation result shows that adoption of IFRS in companies listed on the IDX had a insignificant effect on earnings management. The results of the second regression equation show that political connections have a significant influence on management earnings. The third regression equation shows that political connection moderation variables significantly influenced IFRS adoption of earnings management.

A study on mediating effect of institute reputation on relationship between institute social responsibility and student loyalty: Exploring concerns in Pakistani private HEIs

The aim of this study is to determine the mediating role of the institute reputation between institute social responsibility and student loyalty. The present study uses a multi-stage sampling technique, which first creates four clusters; including Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, and Lahore, and picks one cluster; namely Lahore, randomly for the purpose of the study. Second, proportionate sampling technique is used to calculate the proportionate values of every individual educational institute. Finally, systematic sampling is used to compute the sampling interval kth number of individual univer-sities. Data are collected from the provincial capital city of Punjab province (Lahore) and a total of 511 questionnaires are distributed among postgraduate students under business education discipline of private HEIs, 206 questionnaires are excluded from the sample due to some missing and misleading values, and final analysis is run by using SmartPLS 3.2.8 on 345 questionnaires. Findings elucidate that institutes social responsibility did not have any direct relationship with student loyalty. However, institute social responsibility has indirect relationship with student loyalty thru the mediating variable of institute reputation. Institute reputation also has a significant and positive influence on student loyalty.

Bank responses to corporate reorganization: Evidence from an emerging economy

This study analyzes a unique dataset of 125 corporate reorganization filings in Brazil from 2006 to 2016 to understand the role of bank creditor seniority in bankruptcy outcomes of small- and medium-sized companies. We find that conflict between bank creditor classes is relevant for explaining reorganization outcomes and that it occurs when organizations are in the money. Additionally, bank seniority matters more than the bank’s debt share for explaining bankruptcy outcomes in creditor-oriented regimes. Finally, we find a concave relationship between favorable votes and the number of banks involved and between favorable votes and a company’s age.

La comunicación interna como herramienta de prevención y gestión del conflicto en las organizaciones hoteleras

Este artículo difunde el estado del arte en términos de manejo de conflictos en las organizaciones en general y de cómo la comunicación interna dentro de éstas resulta una herramienta clave para ello, para luego enfocar la investigación en la revisión de la literatura sobre el manejo de conflictos laborales en las organizaciones hoteleras y su relevancia para generar ventajas competitivas ya que en la actualidad resulta relevante el uso de las nuevas tecnologías por parte de los clientes para contrastar opiniones de otros usuarios a cerca del hotel en el que van a elegir alojarse. Si el conflicto aflora entre el personal laboral de la organización, el cliente lo percibirá, su opinión será negativa en las redes y afectará finalmente a la cuenta de resultados. Para ello, se analizaron libros, publicaciones de divulgación e investigación científica, tesis doctorales y sitios contrastados para asegurar su fiabilidad, introduciendo varias ecuaciones de búsqueda selectiva que permitieron seleccionar los documentos más relevantes para la investigación. Los resultados indican que, aunque existen numerosos estudios sobre la gestión de conflictos en las organizaciones y otros muchos estudios sobre comunicación interna, muy pocos se centran en el análisis de la comunicación interna como uno de los elementos que contribuyen a la prevención y gestión del conflicto y aún menos en el sector turístico, detectando así la necesidad de profundizar en este importante motor de la economía.
