Traveling through toll plazas is one of the primary causes of congestion, as identified in recent studies. Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems can mitigate this problem. This experiment focuses on enhancing the security of ETC using RFID tags and number plate verification. For number plate verification, image processing is employed, and a CNN classifier is implemented to detect vehicle registration numbers. Based on the registered number, a notification email is sent to the respective owner for toll fee payment within a specific timeframe to avoid fines. Additionally, toll fees are automatically deducted in real-time from the owner's balance. This system benefits travelers by eliminating the need to queue for toll payment, thereby reducing delays and improving convenience.

In 1780 the English translator and essayist Eliza Ball Hayley (b.1750-1797) published Essays on Friendship and Old-Age, by the Marchioness de Lambert. The text was a translation of two of the many philosophical treatises written by the French philosopher Anne-Thérèse de Lambert (1647-1733). Addressing the chronological, linguistic, and geographical distance between the authors and their philosophical thought, this article examines the motivations behind Hayley’s translation, regarding them as an act of resistance to the predominant contemporary male intellectual discourse, dismissive of de Lambert’s influence. Furthermore, it suggests that through the act of translating, Hayley is in fact recovering de Lambert and her (gendered) contribution to the history of ideas, while in parallel she is asserting her own place within this intellectual continuum by benefiting from de Lambert’s legacy, and thus contributing to, and sustaining, a female genealogy of thought.

The volume of research on fast radio bursts (FRBs) observation have been seeing a dramatic growth. To facilitate the systematic analysis of the FRB population, we established a database platform, Blinkverse (https://blinkverse.alkaidos.cn), as a central inventory of FRBs from various observatories and with published properties, particularly dynamic spectra from FAST, CHIME, GBT, Arecibo, etc. Blinkverse thus not only forms a superset of FRBCAT, TNS, and CHIME/FRB, but also provides convenient access to thousands of FRB dynamic spectra from FAST, some of which were not available before. Blinkverse is regularly maintained and will be updated by external users in the future. Data entries of FRBs can be retrieved through parameter searches through FRB location, fluence, etc., and their logical combinations. Interactive visualization was built into the platform. We analyzed the energy distribution, period analysis, and classification of FRBs based on data downloaded from Blinkverse. The energy distributions of repeaters and non-repeaters are found to be distinct from one another.
Generative information retrieval (IR) has experienced substantial growth across multiple research communities (e.g., information retrieval, computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning), and has been highly visible in the popular press. Theoretical, empirical, and actual user-facing products have been released that retrieve documents (via generation) or directly generate answers given an input request. We would like to investigate whether end-to-end generative models are just another trend or, as some claim, a paradigm change for IR. This necessitates new metrics, theoretical grounding, evaluation methods, task definitions, models, user interfaces, etc. The goal of this workshop (https://coda.io/@sigir/gen-ir) is to focus on previously explored Generative IR techniques like document retrieval and direct Grounded Answer Generation, while also offering a venue for the discussion and exploration of how Generative IR can be applied to new domains like recommendation systems, summarization, etc. The format of the workshop is interactive, including roundtable and keynote sessions and tends to avoid the one-sided dialogue of a mini-conference.
Thin film deposition technologies boost the development of modern semiconductor industries. Being a fancy variant, vapor phase deposition on metal nanoparticles (often in liquid phase) rather than on bare substrates opens novel avenues of fabricating low-dimensional nanomaterials, which renders the development of new device architectures and their applications in advanced electronics, optoelectronics and photonics, etc. Since the last twenty years, nanomaterials with various geometries (i.e. dots, wires, trees, tubes, flakes, ribbons, etc.) have been synthesized via different bottom-up methods (i.e. vapor-liquid-solid, vapor-solid-solid, in plane solid-liquid-solid, etc.) by different deposition techniques (CVD, PECVD, MOCVD, MBE, etc.). In contrast with liquid phase epitaxy where metal liquid severs as stationary reservoir that accommodates gaseous precursors, metal droplets have to be kicked off in-plane on/out-of-plane from the substrates so as to steer the growth of low-dimensional nanomaterials. In this review, we shall regard the growth process in a viewpoint of dynamic droplet evolution under vapor phase deposition. We shall summarize several key factors that affect the droplet spreading behaviors and their consequent nanofluidic transport, which involves deposition parameters, solid-liquid interfaces, crystal phases, substrate nanofacets and so on, which deterministically results in various morphologies and growth directions of the nanomaterials. Reversely, the aspects like doping profile and phase transition that are strongly dependent on the droplet transport will also be discussed.

Since the concept of “literary evolution” proposed by Yuri Tynyanov could not be applied to the late Soviet official literature, Sergei Averintsev using this concept examined the relationship between philosophy, sophistry, rhetorics and everyday consciousness in classical Greece. Tynyanov's theory of “parallel series” turned out to be productive for the reconstruction of the tasks of the ancient philosopher and for the interpretation of Plato's dialogues. According Averintsev, Plato acted within the sophistic field, creating irreducible terminology and untranslatable phrases as a moment of the entire further evolution of Western literature. Consideration of Russian formalism as the context of Averintsev's thought proves his contribution to the discussion of Platonism as a tool for posing philosophical problems and of the perspective of philosophy in the postcolonial discussion.

In recent years with the advent of high bandwidth internet access availability, the cloud computing applications have boomed. With more and more applications being run over the cloud and an increase in the overall user base of the different cloud platforms, the need for highly efficient job scheduling techniques has also increased. The task of a conventional job scheduling algorithm is to determine a sequence of execution for the jobs, which uses the least resources like time, processing, memory, etc. Generally, the user requires more services and very high efficiency. An efficient scheduling technique helps in proper utilization of the resources. In this research realm, the hybrid meta-heuristic algorithms have proven to be very effective in optimizing the task scheduling by providing better cost efficiency than when singly employed. This study presents a systematic and extensive analysis of task scheduling techniques in cloud computing using the various hybrid variants of meta-heuristic methods, like Genetic Algorithm, Tabu Search, Harmony Search, Artificial Bee Colony, Particle Swarm Optimization, etc. In this research review, a separate section discusses the use of various performance evaluation metrics throughout the literature.
In the context of networked control systems, event-triggered control (ETC) has emerged as a major topic due to its alleged resource usage reduction capabilities. However, this is mainly supported by numerical simulations, and very little is formally known about the traffic generated by ETC. This work devises a method to estimate, and in some cases to determine exactly, the minimum average inter-sample time (MAIST) generated by periodic event-triggered control (PETC) of linear systems. The method involves abstracting the traffic model using a bisimulation refinement algorithm and finding the cycle of minimum average length in the graph associated to it. This always gives a lower bound to the actual MAIST. Moreover, if this cycle turns out to be related to a periodic solution of the closed-loop PETC system, the performance metric is exact.
Terahertz (THz) technology is promising in several applications such as imaging, spectroscopy and communications. Among several methods in the generation and detection of THz waves, a THz time domain system (TDS) that is developed using photoconductive antennas (PCA) as emitter and detector presents several advantages such as simple alignment, low cost, high performance etc. In this work, we report the design, fabrication and characterization of a 2-D PCA array that is capable of detecting both the amplitude and phase of the THz pulse. The PCA array is fabricated using LT-GaAs and has 8 channels with 64 pixels (8x8). The infrared probe beam is steered and focused towards each pixel of the PCA array using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The measured photocurrent (amplitude and phase) from each channel is recorded separately and the frequencies up to 1.4 THz can be detected. Furthermore, the parameters such as directional time delay of the THz pulse, crosstalk between the channels etc., were characterized. Finally, we show that the proposed 2D PCA array design is flexible and can be used for accelerated THz spectral image acquisition.

According to Anderson’s positions on nation and nationalism as cultural artifacts, Azar Nafisi’s literary memoirs show a controversial case study, focused on the ambiguities of the exile discourse and of the so-called «imaginative knowledge». Through the lens of a recurring celebration of Western myths of freedom, a series of stereotypes and paradoxes will be examined, in relation to the censorship experienced by the author under the Islamic Republic of Iran. Moreover, Nafisi’s juxtaposition of political and literary perspectives will be shown as an ambivalent narrative strategy, despite her search for a true self without any ideological engagement. In the end, the explored duality between oriented dissertations and pure imaginative recreations will enable to reconsider Nafisi’s memoirs as committed depictions of a Westernized national legacy.

An almost Abelian Lie group is a non-Abelian Lie group with a codimension 1 Abelian normal subgroup. The majority of 3-dimensional real Lie groups are almost Abelian, and they appear in all parts of physics that deal with anisotropic media - cosmology, crystallography etc. In theoretical physics and differential geometry, almost Abelian Lie groups and their homogeneous spaces provide some of the simplest solvmanifolds on which a variety of geometric structures such as symplectic, Kähler, spin etc., are currently studied in explicit terms. Recently, almost Abelian Lie algebras were classified and studied in details. However, a systematic investigation of almost Abelian Lie groups has not been carried out yet, and the present paper is devoted to an explicit description of properties of this wide and diverse class of groups. The subject of investigation are real almost Abelian Lie groups with their Lie group theoretical aspects, such as the exponential map, faithful matrix representations, discrete and connected subgroups, quotients and automorphisms. The emphasis is put on explicit description of all technical details.

$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is a unique platform for light manipulation and versatile use in unidirectional invisibility, lasing, sensing, etc. Broken and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states in non-Hermitian open systems are described by scattering matrices. A multilayer structure, as a simplest example of the open system, has no certain definition of the scattering matrix, since the output ports can be permuted. The uncertainty in definition of the exceptional points bordering $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-broken states poses an important problem, because the exceptional points are indispensable in applications as sensing and mode discrimination. Here we derive the proper scattering matrix from the unambiguous relation between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian and scattering matrix. We reveal that the exceptional points of the scattering matrix with permuted output ports are not related to the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, they can be employed for finding a lasing onset as demonstrated in our time-domain calculations and scattering-matrix pole analysis. Our results are important for various applications of the non-Hermitian systems including encircling exceptional points, coherent perfect absorption, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric plasmonics, etc.
Recent experiments in computer vision demonstrate texture bias as the primary reason for supreme results in models employing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), conflicting with early works claiming that these networks identify objects using shape. It is believed that the cost function forces the CNN to take a greedy approach and develop a proclivity for local information like texture to increase accuracy, thus failing to explore any global statistics. We propose CognitiveCNN, a new intuitive architecture, inspired from feature integration theory in psychology to utilise human interpretable feature like shape, texture, edges etc. to reconstruct, and classify the image. We define novel metrics to quantify the "relevance" of "abstract information" present in these modalities using attention maps. We further introduce a regularisation method which ensures that each modality like shape, texture etc. gets proportionate influence in a given task, as it does for reconstruction; and perform experiments to show the resulting boost in accuracy and robustness, besides imparting explainability to these CNNs for achieving superior performance in object recognition.
