On 6 January 1973, Chilean media artist Juan Downey exhibited Plato Now at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. A hybrid multichannel video installation and performance, this was Downey’s restaging of Plato’s Parable of the Cave—the “Now” registering what the myth might look like from the vantage of his own historical moment. And whereas Plato’s original operated through an inflexible division between the space of the mind and a derivative sensual reality, Plato Now explicitly sought to blur those philosophical lines by assembling a relay of invisible energies, brain waves, video signals, and telepathic communications, such that the space of mind and sensual reality became speculatively entangled. This article clarifies just how Plato Now did this, and situates its philosophical vision as a significant, if relatively unremarked, aesthetic prefiguration of the new materialist tendencies towards relationality, hybrid assemblages, and vibrant conceptions of energy and matter.

Abstract The archaeological heritage at Cerrillo Blanco (Porcuna, Spain) is made up of 27 sculptural ensembles and hundreds of fragments dated between the seventh and second centuries BC. They represent a fundamental milestone in Iberian art and culture. Despite their relevance, no scientific studies have been carried out to date in order to fully understand the materials, intentions and techniques that led to their creation. This is a study carried out on original pieces from the Archaeological Museum of Jaén using stereoscopic optical microscopy (SOM), polarised optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (FESEM-EDX) and spectrophotometry (SF). The results obtained provide new information on the material composition of this important legacy of the Iberian civilization as well as its main alteration factors.
The story of the missed collaboration between Alex North and Stanley Kubrick for the soundtrack of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is faced, in the light of the recently recorded North score for the film. The score highlights not only the too close analogies of North’s various music cues with the temporary tracks chosen by Kubrick but also their original position in the film; film that has suffered until the last many changes. In this research, an aspect that has not been investigated so far has emerged- that of the relationship between North’s music and that of Vaughan Williams, author of the soundtrack for Charles Frend’s film Scott of Antartic (1948). This film curiously has some similarities with Kubrick’s masterpiece, montage of photographic images with special effects, prevalence in the mixing of ‘natural’ noises over music. Furthermore, the analysis of the soundtrack, made from the composer’s point of view, does not want to question the integrity of the filmic text, but, in the light of more recent studies (Platte, 2018), open a plural perspective.

Italian language in the linguistic landscapes of Southern Austria: some remarks
Italian is widely used in the linguistic landscape of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and Graz, though there
isn’t a significant presence of Italians. Italian is used not only in the domains of fashion and gastronomy,
but also in a wider range of domains, including some subcultures. Besides a wide range of Italian lexical items, one can also find morphological and syntactical patterns. This can be seen as a proof of widespread active and passive Italian language skills in the local population. However, its use in commercial signing has in most cases only a symbolic function, while semantic information is given in German.
Green building has witnessed significant growth in the North American market in recent years. Since the construction cost of green office buildings represents a significant impact on the life cycle costs in office buildings in North America, and since green building costs are still not well understood by building owners, a linear regression model is developed in this study to enable office building owners to predict the initial cost based on the structural and envelope materials used. A multi-regression model is then developed to forecast the initial construction cost based on the use of different combinations of materials, such as concrete and steel, for the envelope and structural systems. This model estimates the cost per square foot of mid-rise office buildings according to specified predictor parameters such as building structural system, number of floors, total floor area, and floor height. The process followed modal development consists of three main phases: preliminary quality diagnostics of gathered data, model development, and model testing and validation. This model can assist office building owners in estimating the initial cost of new buildings using green structural and envelope systems, and to provide decision support in the selection among alternatives from the economic point of view.
I create murals that look like azulejos, depicting caravels and many decorative features seen in traditional azulejos, but my murals are made entirely of sugar. I make the sugar tiles and hand paint them with edible inks. I am interested in the azulejo, specifically with imagery of ships, as a symbol of colonial power and of national pride (the Nation of Portugal), but only for the means to subvert this pride. I developed this work in Brazil, addressing the country’s history of colonization and the slave trade that supported Portugal’s sugar empire. I continue to use the blue tile reference, even outside the context of Brazil, because I want to reference the general construct of colonization and slavery, showing how oppression has found new forms. I install my ephemeral murals on city walls, where they wash away, fade, crumble and decay, animating a more realistic version of history.

By introducing workers’ self-management in the 1950s, socialist Yugoslavia aimed to decentralize socio-economic planning and gradually translate into practice the Marxist-Leninist theory of the ‘withering away of the State’. Although the new planning model was intended to provide a more balanced distribution of economic opportunities across the socially diverse federal territory, in practice it prioritized exponential economic growth, contributing to a rural exodus and hyper-concentration of workforce, management capacities and resources in the urban agglomerations. As a direct response to the severe consequences of post-war urbanisation in Yugoslavia, experts from the Urban Planning Institute of Croatia developed the first Yugoslavian methodology of regional planning. With a reference to Hilberseimer’s theoretical work on regional planning, the methodology aimed to integrate rural and urban areas into a coherent regional space with a greater degree of socio-economic independence from the urban centres. This paper provides a critical overview of social and regional planning in Yugoslavia between the introduction of the communal system in 1955 and the new constitution in 1963. By following the two parallel yet interwoven planning discourses, the paper analyses the transition of the State ideology and political economy into the spatial realm. The comparison of two discourses reveals the ambiguous relationship between social and regional planning and the strategic attempts of urban planners to negotiate their ideological positions within the evolving political system. The regional plan for the Krapina district is the first manifestation of the new planning methodology, which intended to reconcile contradictions between city and countryside, centre and periphery, centralisation and decentralisation.
A toast offered in honor of Donald Preziosi on the cusp of his seventy-fifth birthday, this essay considers a range of machine metaphors, their art historical settings, and their implications. Addressing the mythography of Daedalus and his wonder machines in relation to art history’s machinic enterprises, an ancient art-archaeology seminar Preziosi directed at UCLA (in 1988) and the book, Rethinking Art History: Meditations on a Coy Science (1989) form the focus of my thinking about Preziosi’s work. At issue across the essay is the work of recursion, when machines make machines and in so doing create a recessive subjectivity for the maker. The essay ends with the speculation that art history’s disciplinary machinery may owe its generative strength to a perpetual need for replacement parts.
The paper aims to investigate and compare the web communication of two different categories of wine (a native wine – which strongly represents the cultural heritage of the area of origin – and one overall), assessing the existing gap in wine bloggers’ communication.
The work steps provided by methodology are: 1) identifi cation of the top 100 international wine blogs; 2) text mining on the blog articles in the homepage of each wine blog, in order to identify the most widely-mentioned “global” wine; 3) selection of the articles related to the two types of wines in exam, in order to deepen investigate them through the text mining analysis; 4) evaluation of the gap in the web communication of wine bloggers, through a model designed and tested in earlier work for such purpose. The analysis enables the search for information, which aims to identify similarities/differences or peculiarities in the web communication of the two different wines.

The problem regeneration of prefabricated housing in Poland is invariably the current issue. Due to a housing shortage, the demand for apartments in pre-fab housing is still high. Western Europe has begun to struggle with this problem much earlier and has a large experience in the subject of revitalization. However, the context of socio - economic development in Poland, different from the Western European, makes the transfer of complete solutions revitalization impossible . Presented examples show different strategies used in the past and now in Europe (housing revitalization Bijlmer in Amsterdam and building in Halle - Neustadt). They were based on the demolition to a lesser or greater extent. The difficult housing situation in Poland, related to the lack of sufficient amount of housing, poor infrastructure of social housing and complicated housing ownership structure of the buildings, mostly excludes demolition. However, the quality of prefabricated housing living could be significantly improved, without the need for demolition, as evidenced by the spectacular example of the revitalization of the Parisian skyscraper Tour Bois le Prêtre.
This work aims to show as occurs the construction of the heroic image of Barack
Obama for mean of the mythical speech. Thus, it is analyzed the editorial of the American
Journal The New York Times that was published in November, 5, 2008. The theoretical base to this
study supports mainly in ELIADE (2001 : 2007), that argument that prevalence some traces of
the conduct of archaic man same in the technological era, and BARTHES (2007) to whom the
myth in present is a speech. It is observed that the analyzed editorial is used mythical
representations to the construction of the Barack Obama political identity during the American
elections in 2008, seeking configure about him the image of the hero. In this sense, it is pointed
the media as mean that produce and propagate mythological archetypes in the contemporary
society.
