Representing fine shape of local compacta by homotopy classes of ordinary maps

Vladislav Zemlyanoy

Fine shape, as defined by Melikhov, is an extension of the strong shape category of compacta (compact metrizable topological spaces) to all metrizable spaces, notable for being compatible with both Čech cohomology and Steenrod-Sitnikov homology. In this work we study fine shape of local compacta (locally compact separable metrizable spaces), and construct, for every local compactum $X$, a space $|X|$ unique up to a homotopy equivalence and such that fine shape classes from any locally compact metrizable space $Y$ to $X$ bijectively correspond to homotopy classes of ordinary maps from $Y$ to $|X|$. This correspondence is (contravariatly) functorial in $Y$, thus giving a representation of $Y$-dependent contravariant functor for a fixed $X$; the universal class corresponding to the identity map of $X$ is the homotopy class of a specific embedding of $X$ into $|X|$ that is a fine shape equivalence.

«Una pagina intera di storia dell’arte ricucita»

Lupi, Danilo

This paper investigates for the first time the restoration work carried out on the refectory of the monastery of San Michele in Bosco in Bologna, which was supervised by Alfonso Rubbiani between 1892 and 1895. In spite of the vast literature on the ‘restorer’, this work has so far been scarcely considered both because of the chronology of the building (mid-16th century) as well as because it did not entail radical changes. Indeed, the limited size of the room and the numerous documentary traces – carefully tracked by Rubbiani and his patron, the lawyer Giuseppe Bacchelli – were addressing the operation philologically. The discovery of unpublished archival evidence contributed to a more appropriate understanding of the overall work; in particular, it is possible to note how the initial intentions of the architect and the commissioner, which were based on erudite investigations that involved intellectuals and politicians of the time, did not, unfortunately, come to fruition.

Przestępstwa i opłaty administracyjne we wsiach prawa wołoskiego starostwa samborskiego w Inwentarzu…

Video between Architecture and Telepathy

Nicolas Holt

On 6 January 1973, Chilean media artist Juan Downey exhibited Plato Now at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York. A hybrid multichannel video installation and performance, this was Downey’s restaging of Plato’s Parable of the Cave—the “Now” registering what the myth might look like from the vantage of his own historical moment. And whereas Plato’s original operated through an inflexible division between the space of the mind and a derivative sensual reality, Plato Now explicitly sought to blur those philosophical lines by assembling a relay of invisible energies, brain waves, video signals, and telepathic communications, such that the space of mind and sensual reality became speculatively entangled. This article clarifies just how Plato Now did this, and situates its philosophical vision as a significant, if relatively unremarked, aesthetic prefiguration of the new materialist tendencies towards relationality, hybrid assemblages, and vibrant conceptions of energy and matter.

Fermi polaron fine structure in strained van der Waals heterostructures

Z. A. Iakovlev, M. M. Glazov

The fine structure of attractive Fermi polarons in van der Waals heterostructures based on monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides in the presence of elastic strain is studied theoretically. The charged excitons (trions), three particle bound states of two electrons and hole or two holes and electron, do not show any strain-induced fine structure splitting compared to neutral excitons whose radiative doublet is split by the strain into linearly polarized components. The correlation of the trions with Fermi sea holes gives rise to the attractive Fermi polarons. We show that it results in the fine structure splitting of the polaron into states polarized along the main axes of the strain tensor. The effect is related to the bosonic statistics of Fermi polarons. We develop microscopic theory of the effect and calculate the strain-induced splitting of Fermi polarons both for tungsten- and molybdenum-based monolayers identifying the role of inter- and intravalley exciton-electron interactions. The fine structure splitting of attractive Fermi polaron is proportional both to excitonic splitting and the Fermi energy. The Fermi polaron fine structure in bilayers is briefly analyzed and the role of electron and trion localization in moire potentials is discussed.

Transformation vs Tradition: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) for Arts and Humanities

Zhengliang Liu, Yiwei Li, Qian Cao et al.

Recent advances in artificial general intelligence (AGI), particularly large language models and creative image generation systems have demonstrated impressive capabilities on diverse tasks spanning the arts and humanities. However, the swift evolution of AGI has also raised critical questions about its responsible deployment in these culturally significant domains traditionally seen as profoundly human. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the applications and implications of AGI for text, graphics, audio, and video pertaining to arts and the humanities. We survey cutting-edge systems and their usage in areas ranging from poetry to history, marketing to film, and communication to classical art. We outline substantial concerns pertaining to factuality, toxicity, biases, and public safety in AGI systems, and propose mitigation strategies. The paper argues for multi-stakeholder collaboration to ensure AGI promotes creativity, knowledge, and cultural values without undermining truth or human dignity. Our timely contribution summarizes a rapidly developing field, highlighting promising directions while advocating for responsible progress centering on human flourishing. The analysis lays the groundwork for further research on aligning AGI's technological capacities with enduring social goods.

On the feasibility of structure inversions for gravity-mode pulsators

Vincent Vanlaer, Conny Aerts, Earl P. Bellinger et al.

Gravity-mode asteroseismology has significantly improved our understanding of mixing in intermediate mass stars. However, theoretical pulsation periods of stellar models remain in tension with observations, and it is often unclear how the models of these stars should be further improved. Inversions provide a path forward by directly probing the internal structure of these stars from their pulsation periods, quantifying which parts of the model are in need of improvement. This method has been used for solar-like pulsators, but has not yet been applied to main-sequence gravity-mode pulsators. Our aim is to determine whether structure inversions for gravity-mode pulsators are feasible. We focus on the case of slowly rotating SPB stars. We computed and analyzed dipole mode kernels for three variables pairs: $(ρ,c), (N^2,c)$, and $(N^2,ρ)$. We assessed the potential of these kernels by predicting the oscillation frequencies of a model after perturbing its structure. We then tested two inversion methods, RLS and SOLA, using a model grid computed with MESA and GYRE. We find that changing the stellar structure affects the oscillation frequencies in a nonlinear way. The oscillation modes for which this nonlinear dependency is the strongest are in resonance with the near-core peak in the buoyancy frequency. The near core region of the star can be probed with SOLA, while RLS requires fine tuning to obtain accurate results. Both RLS and SOLA are strongly affected by the nonlinear dependencies on the structure differences, as these methods are based on a first-order approximation. These inversion methods need to be modified for meaningful applications of inversions to SPB stars. Our results show that inversions of gravity-mode pulsators are possible in principle, but that the typical inversion methods developed for solar-like oscillators are not applicable. [abridged]

AIxArtist: A First-Person Tale of Interacting with Artificial Intelligence to Escape Creative Block

Makayla Lewis

The future of the arts and artificial intelligence (AI) is promising as technology advances. As the use of AI in design becomes more widespread, art practice may not be a human-only art form and could instead become a digitally integrated experience. With enhanced creativity and collaboration, arts and AI could work together towards creating artistic outputs that are visually appealing and meet the needs of the artist and viewer. While it is uncertain how far the integration will go, arts and AI will likely influence one another. This workshop pictorial puts forward first-person research that shares interactions between an HCI researcher and AI as they try to escape the creative block. The pictorial paper explores two questions: How can AI support artists' creativity, and what does it mean to be explainable in this context? HIs, ChatGPT and Midjourney were engaged; the result was a series of reflections that require further discussion and explorations in the XAIxArts community: Transparency of attribution, the creation process, ethics of asking, and inspiration vs copying.

An inspection technology of inner surface of the fine hole based on machine vision

Rongfang He, Weibin Zhang, Guofang Gao

Fine holes are an important structural component of industrial components, and their inner surface quality is closely related to their function. In order to detect the quality of the inner surface of the fine hole,a special optical measurement system was investigated in this paper. A sight pipe is employed to guide the external illumination light into the fine hole and output the relevant images simultaneously. A flexible light array is introduced to suit the narrow space, and the effective field of view is analyzed. Besides, the arc surface projection error and manufacturing assembly error of the device are analyzed, then compensated or ignored if small enough. In the test of prefabricated circular defects with the diameter φ0.1mm, φ0.2mm, 0.4mm distance distribution and the fissure defects with the width 0.3mm, the maximum measurement error standard deviation are all about 10μm. The minimum diameter of the measured fine hole is 4mm and the depth can reach 47mm.

Recovering Fine Details for Neural Implicit Surface Reconstruction

Decai Chen, Peng Zhang, Ingo Feldmann et al.

Recent works on implicit neural representations have made significant strides. Learning implicit neural surfaces using volume rendering has gained popularity in multi-view reconstruction without 3D supervision. However, accurately recovering fine details is still challenging, due to the underlying ambiguity of geometry and appearance representation. In this paper, we present D-NeuS, a volume rendering-base neural implicit surface reconstruction method capable to recover fine geometry details, which extends NeuS by two additional loss functions targeting enhanced reconstruction quality. First, we encourage the rendered surface points from alpha compositing to have zero signed distance values, alleviating the geometry bias arising from transforming SDF to density for volume rendering. Second, we impose multi-view feature consistency on the surface points, derived by interpolating SDF zero-crossings from sampled points along rays. Extensive quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that our method reconstructs high-accuracy surfaces with details, and outperforms the state of the art.

The use of Silicon Rubber with banana fibres and glass fibres to make Sports court ground by suitable technology to Egyptian environment

Tarek Rashed

The problem of the research conceder Inefficiency of the floors of open or closed sports fields in weather conditions such as heat and rain. also, the floors of sports fields are affected by constant pressure on them, which exposes them to damage and shredding. Most of these floors are imported from abroad and there is no Egyptian technology to produce them. The research aims to providing local qualities for sports stadium floors produced with Egyptian technology and using reinforced fillers of banana and glass fibers. In this research, a hybrid superposed material based on polymeric basis was prepared using the hand lay-up method. - 4 silicon rubber samples were produced : The first sample : 50 grams banana fiber whiskers, 1 kg silicon rubber. The second sample: 100 grams banana fibers whiskers, 1 kg silicon rubber. The third sample : 100 grams of fiberglass (1) woven layer, 1 kg of silicon paper. The fourth sample: 200 grams of fiberglass (2) woven layer, 1 kg of silicon paper. The third sample is the ideal sample for the work of the sports stadiums appropriate for the track or field for small sports, due to the increase in the strength by an appropriate amount while maintaining the highest amount of elongation, as it is one of the least samples losing weight and land resistance. These are very suitable qualities for the track and field halls and gymnasium floors, which allows a significant decrease in the percentage of sports athletes injured, and not affected by conditions of weather conditions such as high temperature, cold and rain. The important economic aspect in producing this type of stadium flooring in a simple way and in a pure Egyptian style, as the material of banana fibers was used instead of burning or disposing in a way that achieves an important environmental aspect. The glass fibers are used for reinforcement, which gives a large part of the continuity of the floor with some maintenance. As for the silicon material, it is less expensive than other materials used to cover sports fields.

Dorka Porogi

Árpád Ódry’s Art of Performance In 1896 the second-year academy student Árpád Ódry was already mentioned by critics as possessing the rare talent of being “able to speak”. The young journalist who first recognizes Ódry’s talent, Sándor Hevesi, will later become the director of the National Theatre. My research focuses on how Ódry’s methods represented an acting ideal and a new school at the beginning of the 20th century by introducing natural (but not naturalistic) performance methods. These methods have proved to have a lasting effect until the present. Ódry’s natural performance methods, however, can only be achieved with the special techniques of the acting profession.

Electrostatic control of the trion fine structure in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers

Yaroslav V. Zhumagulov, Alexei Vagov, Dmitry R. Gulevich et al.

Charged excitons (trions) are essential for the optical spectra in low dimensional doped monolayers (ML) of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDC). Using a direct diagonalization of the three-body Hamiltonian, we explore the low-lying trion states in four types of TMDC MLs. We show that the trions fine structure results from the interplay between the spin-valley fine structure of the single-particle bands and the exchange interaction between the composing particles. We demonstrate that by variations of the doping and dielectric environment, trion energy fine structure can be tuned, leading to anti-crossing of the bright and dark states with substantial implications for the optical spectra of TMDC MLs.

SkyScapes -- Fine-Grained Semantic Understanding of Aerial Scenes

Seyed Majid Azimi, Corentin Henry, Lars Sommer et al.

Understanding the complex urban infrastructure with centimeter-level accuracy is essential for many applications from autonomous driving to mapping, infrastructure monitoring, and urban management. Aerial images provide valuable information over a large area instantaneously; nevertheless, no current dataset captures the complexity of aerial scenes at the level of granularity required by real-world applications. To address this, we introduce SkyScapes, an aerial image dataset with highly-accurate, fine-grained annotations for pixel-level semantic labeling. SkyScapes provides annotations for 31 semantic categories ranging from large structures, such as buildings, roads and vegetation, to fine details, such as 12 (sub-)categories of lane markings. We have defined two main tasks on this dataset: dense semantic segmentation and multi-class lane-marking prediction. We carry out extensive experiments to evaluate state-of-the-art segmentation methods on SkyScapes. Existing methods struggle to deal with the wide range of classes, object sizes, scales, and fine details present. We therefore propose a novel multi-task model, which incorporates semantic edge detection and is better tuned for feature extraction from a wide range of scales. This model achieves notable improvements over the baselines in region outlines and level of detail on both tasks.
