Earned Print and Digital Media in Advancing Hypertension Management Services in Punjab, India: A Descriptive Study

Kritika Upadhyay, Sonu Goel, Nidhi Jaswal et al.

Background: Most often, the role of media in the wider dissemination of information about health and diseases is underscored. The present study aims to systematically analyze and describe the outreach of print and online-earned media generated during a “hypertension control project” undertaken in a state of North India. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional analysis was conducted. All earned news stories published in print and online as part of the hypertension control project from January to November 2021 were included in the study. An integrated model of media communication was employed as an intervention method, which was created through a comprehensive literature study and Delphi methodology. Following a quantitative content analysis of earned media, a hypothetical value (in Indian Rupee) for print and online media was calculated. Results: Two hundred and eighty-five news items (154 print and 131 online) in total were published over an 11-month period, primarily (n = 153, 53.6%) in newspapers with over 70,000 readership. The earned media steadily increased over time, peaking in June and July. Most news items were feature articles (62.5%) followed by case stories (37.5%), with a prime focus on awareness generation (41.4%) among the public and increasing the capacity of stakeholders (35.1%). Press releases were highest at 53%, followed by press conferences (33.7%) and one-to-one interaction (13.3%). Most articles were focused on core hypertension (55%) and transfats (40.7%). The print and online news had a hypothetical cost of 152,970 US$ and 7,280 US$, respectively, which surpassed the resources spent on all project events. Conclusions: In the absence of financial support for paid media, earned media was strategically used to promote awareness about hypertension control.

A systematic approach to the quality assessment of printed products

Havenko Svitlana , Labetska Marta , Havenko Mykola et al.

Quality standards for the technological processes of the production of finished products are used in all countries of the world. Consumers of printing and packaging products are increasingly demanding ISO 9001 quality system certificates from manufacturing companies. It should be noted that international and national standards use different approaches to the standardization of processes and products, and the content of project management. To meet the demands of consumers, which are constantly increasing, quality management should be carried out based on a set of scientifically based principles, which can be divided into system-wide and special. The problem is relevant for modern Ukrainian enterprises, where, on the one hand, they need serious changes in the organizational structure, corporate culture, style and methods of project management; and on the other hand, compliance with the ratio of responsibility for quality between the management system and performers. Evaluation of the quality of printed products at the current stage requires the application of the principles of a systematic approach, based on the principles of which it is possible to build a coherent, logically completed methodological system of quality indicators of a specific type of product. This will also make it possible to justify the problem of choosing certain methods and will give a normative and regulatory character to those indicators that are not reflected in the standards but are important for the practical use of products. To create one or another model of the system, it is first necessary to carry out its verbal and informational description and tuple recording. The components of a verbal informational description usually reflect a description of the external environment, and the system’s connections with it; identification of the relationship between factors, characteristics of the variability of factors; elementary composition of the system, and its parts; description of connections between elements of the system and subsystems; operation of the system, i.e. description of the process of functioning and development of the system. The tuple record of the system model of the quality assessment takes into account the classification characteristics of products, the set of “inputs” and “outputs” of the system; а set of variable parameters and processes. The goals of quality management at each stage of the technological process for each specific type of printed product can be individual. To cover the management of all stages of the life cycle of media or packaging products within the subsystems of the quality system, it is necessary to perform a full set of special (specific) quality management functions. The matrix method or elements of the ISO 9000 series system can be used to form these functions.

The Print Room at Woodhall Park

Kate Retford

This article explores the exemplary surviving print room at Woodhall Park in Hertfordshire, created in 1782 for Sir Thomas Rumbold. A professional named “R. Parker” pasted more than 350 prints around the walls of this interior; the results were then carefully recorded in a catalogue and set of elevation diagrams. The first section, “Space”, analyses the print room within the broader context of the house, in order to connect exterior and interior, explore the relative qualities of “public” and “private” space, and consider neoclassical style as worked out in various media. The second, “Display”, unpacks the pasted scheme, looking at the relationship between “background” images and “starring” works, and that between iconography and pattern-making. The final part explores “Making”, analysing the processes by which prints were selected, trimmed, given paper borders, and arranged around the walls. This discussion considers both the degree to which the intermedial object of the reproductive print was translated into a trompe l’œil painting or sculpture in such schemes, and the creative work of collaging at play. The analysis in this article weaves together textual discussion with still and moving images, film, and animation. Combining these techniques, it aims to provide full documentation and analysis of the scheme, and to engage with embodied, mobile, and the temporally determined viewing experience in both the house and the print room.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic: The Role of Printing Media in Asian Countries

Gulsan Ara Parvin, Reazul Ahsan, Md. Habibur Rahman et al.

During all critical incidents, the media frame our understanding and create powerful forces at both individual and societal levels. The mental health of readers and viewers can also be affected by the media after tragic events. Potentially, the media have a proactive role in shaping the actions of the mass population and thereby influencing policy actions. The print media especially are considered a key avenue for taking information to the masses. However, in this information and communications technology (ICT) era, people are increasingly reluctant to carry hard-copy newspapers, instead preferring e-newspapers. At the present time, entire newspapers, and especially their opinion sections, are deluged by concerns about the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. After China and Japan first encountered COVID-19, other Asian countries began their COVID-19 fight at different times between January and March 2020. All affected countries sought to manage the pandemic in their own way, following lessons learned from China and Japan. Every form of media in affected countries highlighted concerns by presenting news, perceptions, and opinions related to the pandemic. With opinion sections and editorials, the key sections of e-newspapers to reflect experts' perceptions and thoughts, this study aims to examine experts' views in the e-newspapers of five different countries in Asia, in relation to China and Japan. Considering the diversity of socioeconomic and geopolitical settings, five countries—South Korea, Singapore, Iran, India, and Bangladesh—are selected, each represented by one leading English-language e-newspaper. This study explores how experts' perceptions in the studied countries present different aspects of life. It also examines which e-newspaper emphasized which aspect of life and in which period of the outbreak. By intensive text mining in each selected e-newspaper, the study found that experts' opinions addressed diverse issues with regard to COVID-19. These issues are grouped under the following eight categories: health and drugs, preparedness and awareness, social welfare and humanity, the economy, governance and institutions, politics, the environment and wildlife, and innovation and technology. This pioneering study of five different e-newspapers in Asian countries from January to March 2020 presents a similar picture of experts' concerns and their roles in shaping responses to health crises; thus, it plays a role in contributing to policy actions.

Measuring User Assessments and Expectations: The Use of WebQual 4.0 Method and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to Evaluate the Quality of School Websites

Aulia Akhrian Syahidi, Arifin Noor Asyikin, Subandi Subandi

As time goes by and technology advances, any information can be easily obtained from many media, both from various print media or digital electronic media. One of the fastest growing digital media and the main choice for individuals or agencies to get fast and accurate information is the website. One of the benefits of the website is that it can be used as an effective promotional media because it can be accessed by anyone and at any time. This study discusses the evaluation of school websites with a case study at the SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Banjarmasin using the WebQual 4.0 and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) methods. This study aims to measure user ratings of performance and expectations of users/visitors to the website of the SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Banjarmasin. The data in this study were obtained from the questionnaire using a sample of web visitors themselves, both through online based questionnaires and offline questionnaires with paper. This study uses data processing software, namely Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) 2.0. It can be concluded that in this study the results are measured by the level of performance (actual) and the level of importance (expectations) which shows that there is an overall gap for all dimensions -0.38 ie the website needs improvement and tends to still not be as expected. The biggest gap is in the Usability dimension with the largest value being -1.07 on USE5 variables, which means that the appearance of this website tends to be unattractive, not in line with expectations, and needs improvement. Then the acquisition of the value of R Square for the variable user satisfaction is 0.61, which means that the value indicates that the variable user satisfaction can be explained by usability, information quality, and service interaction with a value of 67.7%, while the remaining 32.3% is influenced by variables others not found in the research model.

‘Do you care about the river?' A critical discourse analysis and lessons for management of social conflict over Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) conservation in the case of voluntary stocking in Wales

Hannah L. Harrison, Sophia Kochalski, Robert Arlinghaus et al.

Abstract Stakeholders with shared interests in fish conservation often disagree about which specific conservation measures are appropriate, leading to conflicts with sometimes long‐lasting and disruptive social and political effects. Managers are challenged to balance opposing stakeholder preferences with their own mandates in a charged environment. Using the 2014 termination of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocking in Wales as a case, we conducted a critical discourse analysis of interview data, online print media, social media and policy documents to examine conflict and its mechanisms over time. The data sources represented four discourse planes: the social, media, social media and policy planes. We report five key findings: The conflict around salmon stocking took place in three stages, beginning with a negotiated, manifest conflict that escalated during the 2014 policy process that terminated stocking, creating a persistent spin‐off conflict. The stocking debate was shaped by two discourse coalitions promoting either pro‐ or anti‐hatchery arguments, and an emerging third coalition advocating for compromise. The coalitions disagreed on the effectiveness of stocking, the status of the salmon stock and had different management goals, revealing that the pro‐ or anti‐stocking debate was caused by complex, intertwined and partly opposing beliefs and values. Different elements of the discourses emerged on different planes and arguments were mobile across the planes over time, explaining how selected key arguments were able to persist, gain dominance, re‐appear over time, thus dynamically fuelling and (re)shaping the conflict. The policy change decision to terminate stocking in Wales institutionalized anti‐stocking discourses. It forced all stakeholder groups to acquiesce to one perspective of stocking, creating a win‐lose situation for some stakeholders. The handling and result of the policy change led to the alienation of some stakeholder groups. Ecological management goals were achieved in the short term, but the acrimonious and yet‐unsettled social side effects affected the long‐term relationships and may negatively impact future conservation issues in the area. We conclude that transdisciplinary active management designed for joint learning about stocking trade‐offs may be a suitable alternative to the ‘either‐or' outcomes observed in Wales that fostered sustained stakeholder conflicts instead of joint production of knowledge and understanding. Rise and Fall of a Global Symbol: Frames of the 2‑degree limit in German News Media 2009–2014

Markus Rhomberg, Jonas Kaiser, Dennis Lichtenstein et al.

Mass media are considered to be a forum for the formation of public opinion on climate politics and an important influencing factor for political decision-making. Against this background, this paper deals with the 2‑degree limit, the international political objective to keep global warming below 2 degrees, and analyses the representation and interpretation of the issue in German media during the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in 2009 (COP 15) and in the following years until 2014. It asks how the debate on 2 degree has developed during the Post-Copenhagen era, which public speakers and frames are shaping the debate, and how the discourse has changed over time. Based on a content analysis of 10 print and online media outlets from 2009 to 2014, the study establishes the following findings: 1) the 2‑degree limit was most prominently discussed during COP 15 but then lost media attention; 2) an interplay of media attention and political engagement seems to influence the decreasing attention for 2 degree and thus the development of the debate in German media; 3) the accessibility of the 2‑degree limit is the dominant frame in mass media reporting and addresses potential measures to keep global warming below 2 degrees and possible consequences in case of failure.

Culture in the Media: the Representation of Culture in "Jutarnji List"

Marko Pavlovski

In today's picture of the widely circulated print media a famous assertion is that culture as a subject is decreasing in relevancy, as seen by the amount of pages dedicated to the cultural section and informations on cultural events, especially those of international importance, in the entire content of the most widely read newspapers. The aim of this paper is to show the presence of cultural themes in one of the most popular daily newspaper published in the Republic of Croatia, Jutarnji list. The research will cover the content of this daily for a period of one year (January 1st 2013 to 1st January 2014), to show the presence of cultural themes in it. I suppose, because of a prior knowledge of the materials, that notifications on events in culture at home and abroad will reside outside pages dedicated to the cultural section, so it will be necessary to examine the contents of whole numbers. Furthermore, I will compare the representation of various artistic genres, the presence of film art compared to the amount of articles devoted to literature, and I will devote particular attention to the content dedicated to the non-commercial aspects of a particular genre, for example the amount of information about events in the poetry scene, promotions or group exhibitions of young filmmakers at home and abroad.

Print versus digital in Norwegian newspapers

Tore Slaatta

The conversion of newspapers from print to digital is not taking place in a simple and direct way. In Norway at least, digital news distribution is still developing on the basis of the print media order. But at the same time, it is increasingly becoming a diversified and strategically nuanced logic of online news distribution. What is remarkable in the Norwegian situation is the stability in the high number of outlets and annual sales. It is argued that the Norwegian subsidy system is the most important cause for the high and stable number of newspapers. Indirectly, it also seems to support the development of a competitive market for the development of digital strategies. There is a high rate of innovation in the Norwegian media system, and this article looks into the different digital strategies in different types of newspapers and shows the emergence of a complex pattern of digital news distribution in the Norwegian media order.
