The alter-Native psy-ence of Indigenous well-being: Relational expressions of self and expansive attributions of personhood

Joseph P. Gone

Fifty years ago, Congressional passage of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act heralded a new era in U.S. Indian affairs, ostensibly repudiating the long history of federal intrusion, domination, and control of American Indian lives. Since then, self-determination has come to define federal Indian policy, so much so that the term remains in widespread colloquial usage throughout Indian Country. Even as Tribal governments assumed administrative control of their own human services during this time, inequities in the mental health status of Indigenous communities have persisted. In response, American Indian communities have engaged, critiqued, and recast knowledge and expertise in the mental health professions. The result is an “alter-Native psy-ence” of mental health, comprising Indigenous visions of flourishing vitality and holistic well-being. In these enduring views of a good life, Indigenous communities retain esteem for both personal autonomy and capacious relationality. This fusion of regard for exercising agency and freedom alongside regard for fulfilling roles and duties entails a dynamic configuration of selfhood-in-relation to others. Moreover, these others include both human and non-human persons, for whom personhood itself is defined by the capacity to exercise agency, autonomy, and self-determination. In this article, description and illustration of relational Indigenous expressions of self and expansive Indigenous attributions of personhood illuminate diverse forms of well-being that extend well beyond the culturally myopic orientations of the mental health professions. Recognition of these alter-Native modalities of living by the “psy” disciplines harbors potential for Indigenous ''survivance'' and “futurity” in robust anticolonial fashion.

Dev Sanskriti: Interdisciplinary International Journal, published by Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar, continues its mission to serve as a platform for research on interdisciplinary subjects, particularly emphasizing the integration of indigenous ancient Indian science with modern scientific inquiry. Inspired by the vision of the eminent scholar and visionary, Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya, the university remains committed to fostering education and research that blends science and spirituality, nurturing individuals who embody selflessness, compassion, and wisdom. The present volume of the journal includes contributions across various disciplines, covering themes such as Yoga philosophy, Ayurvedic healing, meditation-based emotional intelligence, Vedic consciousness, and media’s role in rural empowerment. The first research article by Ghazale Adampour and Chinmay Pandya examines the awareness of the Patanjali Yoga Sutra among certified yoga instructors in Iran. Through a structured survey of 115 participants, the study reveals a promising familiarity with core concepts such as Chitta Vritti Nirodha and Ahimsa, yet highlights gaps in understanding the broader structure and philosophical depth of the Yoga Sutras. The study underscores the necessity of educational interventions to deepen the comprehension of yoga philosophy among instructors. The second paper, authored by Sreenadh P. and T.S. Dudhamal, presents a case study on fracture healing using Jingini Taila bandage in Ayurveda. The study explores an integrative approach combining Ayurvedic principles with conventional immobilization for metatarsal fractures. The findings suggest that the external application of Jingini Taila alongside oral administration of Lakshadi Guggulu significantly aids fracture healing while minimizing post-cast stiffness, allowing for a quicker recovery period. The third research article by Lalima Batham and Swarnkala Singh explores the Amrit Varsha Dhyan meditation technique proposed by Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya and its role in enhancing emotional intelligence. The study discusses how guided visualization practices within this meditation technique contribute to emotional regulation, empathy, and mental clarity. The findings indicate that Amrit Varsha Dhyan has the potential to foster emotional stability and resilience, making it an effective tool for personal development and psychological well-being. The fourth article by Shilpi Verma and Manorama Nikhra delves into the concept of Prana Tattva as described in the Kaushitaki Brahmana Upanishad. This perspective article discusses the fundamental role of Prana as the life-sustaining force, emphasizing its supremacy over sensory faculties and its connection to self-realization and liberation. The article provides a philosophical and scriptural exploration of Prana as an essential element of existence and consciousness. The final article by Neha Singh and Saumya Gupta examines the role of rural women in community radio, with a special focus on Apna Radio and Gurgaon Ki Awaaz. The authors highlight how community radio has become an empowering tool for rural women, allowing them to take leadership roles, voice their concerns, and drive social change. The article discusses the significance of media in shaping awareness and fostering development among women in rural communities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the reviewers and contributors whose dedication and scholarly efforts have enriched this volume. We hope this issue inspires researchers, educators, policymakers, and professionals to explore and appreciate the relevance of Indigenous Knowledge in contemporary society. We also invite feedback from our readers to enhance the journal’s impact in the field of interdisciplinary research. Enjoy reading and immerse yourself in the wisdom of this volume. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead!

Universal mental health curricula in public schools: Integrating mental health into physical education

Hans Oh, Marco Formigoni

Abstract Mental health problems are ubiquitous, yet public schooling lacks comprehensive mental health curricula. The purpose of public education, in part, is to prepare people to face life and contribute to society. In the same vein as physical education (PE), we argue that a universal mental health curriculum could benefit the entire population. Schools across the globe, including in the United States, are beginning to explore universal mental health curricula, which could yield benefits that reach beyond mental health and wellness, to improve physical health, reduce behavioral problems, and increase academic performance. But the road ahead is marked with considerable economic and political barriers. We argue for incorporating mental health into the PE curriculum to gain traction toward a more comprehensive mental health curriculum.

Background: Depression is a common problem around the world that increases the risk of unhealthy lifestyle behavior. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of depressive symptoms among tertiary level (college) students in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 400 college students in Rajshahi district. Samples were collected using two-stage random sampling. Nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to measure depressive symptoms of tertiary level students. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and its associated factors. A value of p<0.05 was considered as statistically significant in the analysis. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms among tertiary level students was 30.7%, with a greater proportion in urban (40.70%) than rural (21.40%) areas of Rajshahi district. A binary logistic regression model established five main factors of depressive symptoms among tertiary level students in Bangladesh: (1) family members ≤4 (AOR= 2.27; CI: 1.21–4.26, p<0.05); (ii) BMI status [underweight (AOR= 1.70; CI: 1.05–2.74, p<0.05) and overweight (AOR= 5.91; CI: 2.42–14.43, p<0.10)]; (iii) migraine (AOR: 3.35; CI: 1.75–6.43, p<0.05); (iv) existence of chronic disease (AOR= 1.96; CI, 1.04–3.70, p<0.05); and (v) illiterate mothers (AOR= 2.38; CI, 1.16–4.86, p<0.05). Conclusions: About one-third of the tertiary level students were suffering from depressive symptoms in Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. Some prevention programs like school-based counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal approaches, and family-based prevention strategies should be taken for preventing depressive symptoms of adolescent students; our findings would help for this purpose.

Pankaj Singh Chandel, Chirayu Vats, Umakant Indolia

Understanding Indian cultural and ritual perspective of India has been important aspect of the sociologists and culturists. Perspective on Indian culture can be availed through understanding of Yagya as it is the basis of Indian culture. Survey by Nielsen Corporation has shown the proud feeling of Indians towards their culture while Wiber J Scott indicated that Indian students studying in America had gone to a level of ‘difficult situation’ towards understanding their culture and spirituality. Hence, the present study aimed to find understanding-level of youth (18-40 years) towards contemporary scenario of Yagya. The survey-questionnaire (self-prepared, Google form) was circulated through digital platforms. 566 participants had responded from the different disciplines and professions. 96.99% participants were aware of the term ‘Yagya’ or ‘Hawan’ and indicated it as important for health, environment, and spiritual development and for attaining peace of mind too, while 86.21% believed to have Yagya as part of daily life. The study has shown that youth were aware with the general and basic understanding of Yagya used in ceremonial purposes and surprisingly they (58.83%) also felt that it does not belong to one specific community or religion. However, there is also a category of youth (35.86%) that did not agree nor did that know about it (5.3%). It is also important to note that the questionnaire was circulated through social-media platforms and sharing of link was of personal interest, the majority of participants were familiar with Yagya, hence, such cross sectional study with wider population would justify the present research attempt.

Mental ill health in the elderly: medical students’ social representations in the United Kingdom

Bruno Medeiros, Juliet Foster

Objective This study aims to explore medical students’ social representations of mental ill health in older adults. Method It comprises an exploratory and qualitative investigation based on the theory of social representations. Two focus groups with pre-clinical medics (group 1, N=4; group 2, N=4) and 10 individual interviews with clinical medical students were conducted. Thematic analysis at a latent level explored meanings and differences between groups. Results Three overarching themes reflect participants’ representations of mental health problems in later life – mental ill health in old age, polarisation of care, and challenges to care. Primary health care appears as an important strategy to overcome barriers to mental health care in the community. Nevertheless, disqualifying representations, stigma and organization of services constitute the main challenges to quality mental health care in later life. Conclusion This paper highlights the need to address cultural and organizational barriers to promote quality care.

Sistema de Classificação de Pacientes Pediátricos: construção e validação de categorias de cuidados

Ariane Polidoro Dini, Fernanda Maria Togeiro Fugulin, Maria De La Ó Ramallo Veríssimo et al.
