Fourier-Invertible Neural Encoder (FINE) for Homogeneous Flows

Anqiao Ouyang, Hongyi Ke, Qi Wang

We present the Fourier-Invertible Neural Encoder (FINE), a compact and interpretable architecture for dimension reduction in translation-equivariant datasets. FINE integrates reversible filters and monotonic activation functions with a Fourier truncation bottleneck, achieving information-preserving compression that respects translational symmetry. This design offers a new perspective on symmetry-aware learning, linking spectral truncation to group-equivariant representations. The proposed FINE architecture is tested on one-dimensional nonlinear wave interaction, one-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky turbulence dataset, and a two-dimensional turbulence dataset. FINE achieves an overall 4.9-9.1 times lower reconstruction error than convolutional autoencoders while using only 13-21% of their parameters. The results highlight FINE's effectiveness in representing complex physical systems with minimal dimension in the latent space. The proposed framework provides a principled framework for interpretable, low-parameter, and symmetry-preserving dimensional reduction, bridging the gap between Fourier representations and modern neural architectures for scientific and physics-informed learning.

Consistent model selection in a collection of stochastic block models

Lucie Arts

We introduce the penalized Krichevsky-Trofimov (KT) estimator as a convergent method for estimating the number of nodes clusters when observing multiple networks within both multi-layer and dynamic Stochastic Block Models. We establish the consistency of the KT estimator, showing that it converges to the correct number of clusters in both types of models when the number of nodes in the networks increases. Our estimator does not require a known upper bound on this number to be consistent. Furthermore, we show that these consistency results hold in both dense and sparse regimes, making the penalized KT estimator robust across various network configurations. We illustrate its performance on synthetic datasets.

Architectural design principles of a University Campus that create an educational atmosphere

Diah Cahyani Permana Sari, Mokhamad Syaom Barliana, Rr. Tjahyani Busono et al.

Architectural design holds a pivotal role in shaping the development of university campuses. This study critically examines the extent to which the architectural plans of four campuses correspond with the conceptual framework of an educational campus. The evaluation of design quality is crucial, as it significantly influences both academic and non-academic environments, thereby contributing to the overall enhancement of higher education quality. Adopting a mixed methods research (MMR) approach, the initial phase employs the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to establish the Priority Design Principles for Educational Campuses. Subsequently, the quantitative phase focuses on formulating a decision-making model to assess the quality of the educational atmosphere through the application of a fuzzy logic system. The findings of this research reveal that the top three design criteria, identified as having the highest priority, serve as the basis for developing a comprehensive model to evaluate campus designs grounded in the educational campus paradigm. These three key criteria functions as benchmarks for determining whether a campus’s architectural design satisfies the essential standards of an educational campus. An empirical assessment conducted across four university campuses indicates that only the campus design of Malikussaleh University falls short of meeting the educational campus design criteria. In contrast, the remaining three universities have successfully adhered to the principles underpinning the educational campus concept.

Complex revitalization of historically formed industrial territories in Kyiv in post-war recovery

Nellya Leshchenko, Daryna Gulei

The article is aimed at considering revitalization as a complex renewing method and a component of the complex process of restorative-reconstructive transformations of the historical urban environment. The effectiveness of complex revitalization with the involvement of various restoring and renewing methods has been proven. It allows at different system levels to revive and improve the quality of heterogeneous in terms of historical and architectural value and destruction of the historical urban environment, which usually includes the historically formed industrial territories. Such heterogeneity of the historical urban environment, reinforced over the last year by the devastating consequences of the war, today is characteristic of Kyiv and many cities of Ukraine, and therefore the proposed methodology is extremely relevant. The analysis of the experience of revitalizing former industrial territories of Lodz, as the most successful among the cities of Poland – the country with the closest historical, cultural, and architectural ties to Ukraine, is extremely valuable for pre-project studies of neglected and ruined historically formed industrial territories of Kyiv. The proposed concept of revitalizing degraded former industrial territories in Podil and on Radyshcheva Street in Kyiv has demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Analysis of Mythological Elements in the Seven Houses of the Narrators' Scroll and Its Comparison with the Shahnameh

Samanehsadat Shahid Hoseini, Hasanali Abaepour Esfadan, Vahid Rooyani

Narrative scrolls are one of the very rich sources of Iranian culture and literature, which in the form of mythological and epic stories contain mythical concepts, forgotten customs, linguistic points, and so on. In the narration scrolls, due to the emphasis on the stories of the heroes of Sistan, there is usually no mention of Esfandiar Haft Khan, but instead of Rostam Haft Khan, two Haft Khans are also mentioned for his descendants, Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh, which is remarkable. Researchers in the present study are looking for answers to the following questions: First, are Haft Khan Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh based on the model of Haft Khan Rostam and Esfandiar? And secondly, what are the mythological points in these seven readers that the researchers were unaware of? The results show that Faramarz and Jahanbakhsh's Haft Khans are based on the pattern of Rostam and Esfandiar Haft Khans, and mythological points such as the existence of the "eagle" as a Jupiter and the presence of a wolf representing the soldier in the Mehr ritual indicate the rich mythological background of these seven Khans. But in addition to mythological issues, scrolls can also be examined from the perspective of storytelling, especially the ancient scroll of Ferdowsi Shahnameh (Sedaghatnejad) pays more attention to characterization and causal relations and details of the story and the image of mental and physical states.

Contrastive Representations for Label Noise Require Fine-Tuning

Pierre Nodet, Vincent Lemaire, Alexis Bondu et al.

In this paper we show that the combination of a Contrastive representation with a label noise-robust classification head requires fine-tuning the representation in order to achieve state-of-the-art performances. Since fine-tuned representations are shown to outperform frozen ones, one can conclude that noise-robust classification heads are indeed able to promote meaningful representations if provided with a suitable starting point. Experiments are conducted to draw a comprehensive picture of performances by featuring six methods and nine noise instances of three different kinds (none, symmetric, and asymmetric). In presence of noise the experiments show that fine tuning of Contrastive representation allows the six methods to achieve better results than end-to-end learning and represent a new reference compare to the recent state of art. Results are also remarkable stable versus the noise level.

Fine and hyperfine splitting of the low-lying states of $^9$Be

Mariusz Puchalski, Jacek Komasa, Krzysztof Pachucki

We perform accurate calculations of energy levels as well as fine and hyperfine splittings of the lowest $^{1,3}\!P_J$, $^{3}\!S_1$, $^{3}\!P^e_J$, and $^{1,3}\!D_J$ excited states of the $^9$Be atom using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and report on the breakdown of the standard hyperfine structure theory. Because of the strong hyperfine mixing, which prevents the use of common hyperfine constants, we formulate a description of the fine and hyperfine structure that is valid for an arbitrary coupling strength and may have wide applications in many other atomic systems.

Fine gradings and automorphism groups on associative algebras

Adrián Rodrigo-Escudero

First we prove that any inner automorphism in the stabilizer of a graded-simple unital associative algebra whose grading group is abelian is the conjugation by a homogeneous element. Now consider a grading by an abelian group on an associative algebra such that the algebra is graded-simple and satisfies the DCC on graded left ideals. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the grading to be fine. Then we assume that one of these necessary conditions to be fine is satisfied, and we compute the automorphism groups of the grading; the results are expressed in terms of the automorphism groups of a graded-division algebra. Finally we compute the automorphism groups of graded-division algebras in the case in which the ground field is the field of real numbers, and the underlying algebra (disregarding the grading) is simple and of finite dimension.

Insights From A Large-Scale Database of Material Depictions In Paintings

Hubert Lin, Mitchell Van Zuijlen, Maarten W. A. Wijntjes et al.

Deep learning has paved the way for strong recognition systems which are often both trained on and applied to natural images. In this paper, we examine the give-and-take relationship between such visual recognition systems and the rich information available in the fine arts. First, we find that visual recognition systems designed for natural images can work surprisingly well on paintings. In particular, we find that interactive segmentation tools can be used to cleanly annotate polygonal segments within paintings, a task which is time consuming to undertake by hand. We also find that FasterRCNN, a model which has been designed for object recognition in natural scenes, can be quickly repurposed for detection of materials in paintings. Second, we show that learning from paintings can be beneficial for neural networks that are intended to be used on natural images. We find that training on paintings instead of natural images can improve the quality of learned features and we further find that a large number of paintings can be a valuable source of test data for evaluating domain adaptation algorithms. Our experiments are based on a novel large-scale annotated database of material depictions in paintings which we detail in a separate manuscript.

Editor JFDE

Welcome to this new issue of our Journal of Façade Design and Engineering. We are very pleased to be able to release a new issue under the current global circumstances, to keep supporting research and the engineering of new technologies, materials, and methods for the design of our envelopes. This special issue features a wide range of topics, stemming from research activities of members from the European Façade Network (EFN). The EFN seeks to advance and promote façade design and engineering at a European level and beyond, through inclusive collaboration between European Research centres, Universities, and alumni, resulting in skills and knowledge transfer in education, research, and development. Consequently, this special issue showcases a selection of research experiences presented at two scientific events sponsored by the EFN. The first scientific event was the Conference “FACADES19” held in Lisbon on November 22nd, 2019, which was organised by Dr. Daniel Aelenei from the Department of Civil Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology. The second scientific event refers to a special “EFN session“ hosted at the Façade Tectonics 2020 World Congress, held online in August 2020. This session within the larger congress was coordinated by Daniel Artzmann, Mikkel Kragh, Annalisa Andaloro, and Ulrich Knaack. The selection of the papers from both events was based on their relevance to the scope of our journal and went through the double-blind peer review process of the JFDE. We thank all supporters and contributors who made these events a success and especially the authors of the articles compiled in this issue. The Editors in Chief, Ulrich Knaack Tillmann Klein

IMHO Fine-Tuning Improves Claim Detection

Tuhin Chakrabarty, Christopher Hidey, Kathleen McKeown

Claims are the central component of an argument. Detecting claims across different domains or data sets can often be challenging due to their varying conceptualization. We propose to alleviate this problem by fine tuning a language model using a Reddit corpus of 5.5 million opinionated claims. These claims are self-labeled by their authors using the internet acronyms IMO/IMHO (in my (humble) opinion). Empirical results show that using this approach improves the state of art performance across four benchmark argumentation data sets by an average of 4 absolute F1 points in claim detection. As these data sets include diverse domains such as social media and student essays this improvement demonstrates the robustness of fine-tuning on this novel corpus.

Fine properties of functions of bounded deformation -- an approach via linear PDEs

Guido De Philippis, Filip Rindler

In this survey we collect some recent results obtained by the authors and collaborators concerning the fine structure of functions of bounded deformation (BD). These maps are $\mathrm{L}^1$-functions with the property that the symmetric part of their distributional derivative is representable as a bounded (matrix-valued) Radon measure. It has been known for a long time that for a (matrix-valued) Radon measure the property of being a symmetrized gradient can be characterized by an under-determined second-order PDE system, the Saint-Venant compatibility conditions. This observation gives rise to a new approach to the fine properties of BD-maps via the theory of PDEs for measures, which complements and partially replaces classical arguments. Starting from elementary observations, here we elucidate the ellipticity arguments underlying this recent progress and give an overview of the state of the art. We also present some open problems.

On the Fine Interior of Three-dimensional Canonical Fano Polytopes

Victor Batyrev, Alexander Kasprzyk, Karin Schaller

The Fine interior $Δ^{\text{FI}}$ of a $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $Δ$ is a rational subpolytope of $Δ$ which is important for constructing minimal birational models of non-degenerate hypersurfaces defined by Laurent polynomials with Newton polytope $Δ$. This paper presents some computational results on the Fine interior of all $674,\!688$ three-dimensional canonical Fano polytopes.
