Design, validation, and reliability of the Bangor rugby assessment tool for evaluating technical and tactical skills in rugby union development pathways

George C. Lowe, George C. Lowe, George C. Lowe et al.

IntroductionPlayer profiling is fundamental to effective talent identification and development strategies. However, whilst anthropometric and physiological profiling is customary practice, effective evaluation of technical and tactical skills in team sports has arguable been overlooked, largely due to a lack of suitable measurement tools. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to design, validate, and test the reliability of a novel observational instrument for assessing technical and tactical skills in rugby union.MethodsThe Bangor Rugby Assessment Tool (BRAT) was developed via the following three stages: (1) completion of a targeted literature search and expert focus group to inform initial item content; (2) Bayesian structural equation modelling (BSEM) to examine instrument factor structure; and (3) establishment of instrument reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC).ResultsResults demonstrate excellent model fit (PPP = 0.511) and strong validity for both the technical and tactical factors. ICC values ranged from moderate to excellent, demonstrating good reliability (0.79).DiscussionThe assessment tool offers a valid and reliable measure of technical and tactical aptitude within rugby union, whilst maintaining the requisite practical utility valued by practitioners.

A big data approach to mitigating the MAUP in measuring excess commuting

Cehong Luo, Yujie Hu, Fahui Wang

Abstract Excess commuting, defined as the inefficiency resulting from spatial mismatches between residential and employment locations, poses significant challenges for urban planning and transportation systems. This study uses big data from individual vehicle trips collected in Tampa, Florida, to quantify excess commuting more accurately than traditional zonal approaches. Through the application of Linear Programming (LP) and Integer Linear Programming (ILP) models, this research measures minimum and actual commuting patterns across different spatial scales—census tract, block group, and individual trip levels. The findings reveal a clear scale effect associated with the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), as smaller spatial units consistently yield shorter minimum commuting distances and times and the ILP model at the individual trip level yields the least. By directly analyzing actual trips rather than simulated data, this approach provides a more precise and realistic assessment of excess commuting. The results underscore the values of methodological improvements and individual-level data in refining our understanding of excess commuting and supporting more efficient urban planning and policymaking.

Twenty years after the first explorations of mobile phone datasets, this article looks at the potential and limitations of geolocalised individual data from mobile phone datasets in order to capture the behavior of a population of cruise tourists stopping over in Normandy. We present here a new methodological protocol adapted to changes in the spatial and temporal resolutions of mobile phone data sets provided by the Flux-Vision Operator Orange, following the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (2018, European Union). Using anonymized mobile phone datasets, our method reveals spatiotemporal clusters of visitors, identifying a target population of cruise passengers, as well as their movements during their stopover in Normandy. We have also observed a cruise effect on the most attractive areas visited by this category of tourists, through preferential flows and the main durations of the majority of visits to the region over a 24-hour period. There is still some uncertainty as to the precise identification of the heritage and tourist sites visited in each of the major tourist areas identified. This uncertainty means that we need to cross-reference tourist data with mobile phone datasets (ticket offices, overnight stays, websites, booking platforms, social networks, etc.).

Examining the synergies between industry 4.0 and sustainability dimensions using text mining, sentiment analysis, and association rules

Mohamad Ali Saleh Saleh, Mutaz AlShafeey

The transformation to Industry 4.0 has significantly revolutionized manufacturing and production processes, raising important questions about their impact on sustainability. This study aims to explore the interplay between Industry 4.0 and the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. The methodological approach includes advanced text-mining, sentiment analysis, and association rule-mining techniques to examine 6,759 abstracts from the Scopus database. The text mining highlighted frequent keywords related to Industry 4.0 and the three sustainability dimensions, characterized by “economic growth,” “circular economy,” “social responsibility,” “education 4.0,” “energy efficiency,” and “waste management.” Sentiment analysis revealed a predominantly positive perspective, with 2,608 positive sentiments out of 2,761 in the economic dimension, 1,604 out of 1,728 in the social dimension, and 1,352 out of 1,527 in the environmental dimension. The association rule mining uncovered the associations between Industry 4.0 and each sustainability dimension. The highest support was observed between Industry 4.0 and economic sustainability, with a support value of 0.444, confidence of 0.855, and a lift of 1.060. These findings highlight the role of Industry 4.0 in promoting resource efficiency and reducing waste through circular economy principles and advanced manufacturing technologies. For the social dimension, the analysis revealed a strong association with Industry 4.0 (support: 0.430, confidence: 0.831, lift: 1.030), emphasizing its role in enhancing worker safety and job satisfaction by automating hazardous tasks and creating new high-tech job opportunities. In the environmental dimension, a significant association was found (support: 0.380, confidence: 0.827, lift: 1.024), showing Industry 4.0′s contribution to sustainability through optimized energy consumption and emissions reduction as the integration of big data and IoT enables real-time monitoring of environmental impacts. The rule combining economic and social aspects with Industry 4.0 (support: 0.219, confidence: 0.87, lift: 1.078) highlights the interconnected nature of these dimensions, suggesting many studies consider economic and social dimensions together in the Industry 4.0 context.

The Diversity and Distribution of Sponges in Three Different Islands at the Makassar Strait, Indonesia

Nurul Magfirah Sukri, Windra Priawandiputra, Tri Atmowidi et al.

Graphical Abstract   Highlight Research • Approximately 3978 sponge individuals were collected and grouped to 137 morphospecies, with 120 of these have been identified intothree classes, 17 orders, 40 families, and at least 70 genera. • Sponges in the Makassar Strait showed significant differences based on individual abundance data. • Pannikiang Island had the greatest abundance and diversity of sponges, and the lowest found in Gusung Toraja. • The sponge composition of the three islands indicated that neighboring islands do not guarantee high similarity.     Abstract Sponges are an important and dominant component of marine benthos which are threatened due to global environmental degradation. To establish appropriate conservation policies, the diversity and distribution of sponge must be understood. Meanwhile, the availability of sponge diversity and distribution especially in the Makassar Strait, is still lacking. This study aimed to investigated the diversity and distribution of the sponges composition in coral reef ecosystems on three less-explored islands in the Makassar Strait (South and West Sulawesi provinces, Indonesia). Sponge assemblages were sampled at a depth of 5 m using Underwater Photo Transect method, with a total area of 15 m2 at each site. We recorded a total of 137 morphospecies of sponges (N = 3978 individuals), 59 of which were restricted to Barrang Caddi, 39 to Gusung Toraja, and 92 to Pannikiang. Only 12 species were shared among all islands. We found ten morphological types of sponge, with the dominant type in all islands was encrusting. Our results showed that Pannikiang island represents the  highest diversity and abundance of sponges, which had the largest area compared to the other islands and is surrounded by mangrove forests. There was a significant difference in species composition between Pannikiang and other islands.

Arctic amplification, and its seasonal migration, over a wide range of abrupt CO2 forcing

Yu-Chiao Liang, Lorenzo M. Polvani, Ivan Mitevski

Abstract Arctic amplification (AA), the larger warming of the Arctic compared to the rest of the planet, is widely attributed to the increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2, and is caused by local and non-local mechanisms. In this study, we examine AA, and its seasonal cycle, in a sequence of abrupt CO2 forcing experiments, spanning from 1 to 8 times pre-industrial CO2 levels, using a state-of-the-art global climate model. We find that increasing CO2 concentrations give rise to stronger Arctic warming but weaker AA, owing to relatively weaker warming of the Arctic in comparison with the rest of the globe due to weaker sea-ice loss and atmosphere-ocean heat fluxes at higher CO2 levels. We further find that the seasonal peak in AA shifts gradually from November to January as CO2 increases. Finally, we show that this seasonal shift in AA emerges in the 21st century in high-CO2 emission scenario simulations. During the early-to-middle 21st century AA peaks in November–December but the peak shifts to December-January at the end of the century. Our findings highlight the role of CO2 forcing in affecting the seasonal evolution of amplified Arctic warming, which carries important ecological and socio-economic implications.

Application of Molecular Probes in Tumor Treatment

Chen Zeyu

Photothermal therapy refers to the addition of targeted drugs with photothermal effects into the patient's body. Through targeting, the drug specifically recognizes tumor cells and accumulates around tumor cells. Afterwards, it is irradiated with a laser of a specific wavelength to achieve a local temperature increase, thereby achieving the effect of killing or locating tumor cells. Therefore, the most important part of this treatment method is the photothermal probe with a targeting effect and good photothermal effect. The existing photothermal probes are mainly composed of inorganic substances, organic small molecules and organic biomolecules. This paper will mainly introduce the development status and prospects of performance of these three types of photothermal probes to introduce photothermal agent development.

Addressing Problems beyond Heritage, Patrimony, and Representation:  Reflections on Twenty Years of Community Archaeology in the Southwestern Maya Lowlands

Brent K.S. Woodfill, Alexander E. Rivas

Collaborative or community archaeology as a methodological approach has a long history and is becoming increasingly common in the Maya world. This article draws from the authors’ experiences on three distinct archaeological projects to discuss the benefits and obstacles we confronted while conducting collaborative research with contemporary Maya communities as well as lessons we learned that can increase the odds of a mutually beneficial partnership. After summarizing the history of the research projects and the expectations for and contributions of the scientific and community stakeholders, we propose several characteristics that were particularly helpful. These include the need for all parties to engage in sincere and sustained dialogue, to be flexible, and to take others in account when making any plans that affect them. Most importantly, we urge archaeologists to collaborate with community endeavors beyond those that are directly related to their research, offering a few examples of how archaeological skills, equipment, and social capital can be used to address a wide range of local concerns beyond patrimony and heritage.

THE PAST AND PRESENT OF THE TRANSYLVANIAN SALT WATERS

Boglárka CZELLECZ, Noémi-Mária SZOPOS

The Transylvanian salt was always in the center of attention from different points of view during different periods. In the past centuries, identifying the location and extent of this resource was the most important issue, since mining and trading were top priority activities. In recent times the formation of the salt deposits is mostly in the attention of the scientists, so salt is a subject of a continuous interest. Waters that get their mineralization by interacting with the salt beds have been less researched. They were in the center of attention mostly in the second part of the 19th century, while in the recent times just a few studies have dealt with this topic. Field observations carried out in 2016 revealed that the number of salt water occurrences at surface decreased over time. By exploring the causes why these sources have disappeared, we succeeded to gather valuable information about the appreciation of the salt waters during the centuries. Until the 14th century all salt products were considered as part of the land, while in the late Middle Ages this perception was replaced with the practice of regalia, the exclusive right of the king over all the salt resources, including the salt waters. The rights that the regalia empowered the kings were not equally applied over time. The most rigurous actions to protect the rights over this resource were applied during the 19th century. This study presents the legal background and regulation of usage of the salt waters in Transylvania from the Middle Ages until the 20th century. A case study is also presented in order to illustrate the rate of disappearance and present situation of the salt sites in the area South of Cluj-Napoca city.

Alternative scenarios for food and non-food uses of Walloon cereals by 2030. Topic. Based on the current uses of cereals grown in Wallonia (Belgium), various scenarios defining possible futures for the Walloon cereal sector have been created. Purpose. These scenarios lay the basis for research aiming at assessing the sustainability of food and non-food uses of cereals. Method. Based on contrasted hypotheses, four scenarios for the uses of Walloon cereals by 2030 have been defined with the support of stakeholders involved in all the steps of the chain. Results. The first scenario, called "Business-as-Usual", extrapolates trends from 15 years before 2010 and up to 2030. In the second scenario, called "Strategic", the current system is optimized from the environmental, economic and social point of view. The third and fourth scenarios break with current trends. The third scenario, called "Localization", considers an increased autonomy and the development of new cereal processing units in Wallonia. The fourth scenario, called "Globalization", focuses on a massive level of cereal export in response to an increasing demand from the global market and deals with high added-value products within Wallonia. Conclusions. Issues such as competition between food uses and non-food uses of cereals and of Walloon dependency on imports are addressed in these scenarios illustrating possible future situations, from food self-sufficiency to dramatic globalization, through the development of new outlets combining the adaptation of cropping practices, consumption, the evolution of habits and the use of new technologies.

Was Marx right after all? A Critical Analysis of the Global Financial Crisis

Elmar Altvater
