I Live in Vaccarizzo.

Federica Benatti

I live in Vaccarizzo is a Social Transformation Lab that the BRIT team facilitated from January to May 2019. The aim was to experiment with Otto Scharmer’s Theory U as a method to activate the repopulation in Vaccarizzo di Montalto (CS), a small village of 500 inhabitants of the Silane Apennines. Participants analyzed their current social system and co-designed the future scenario they wanted for their community. They generated four prototypes focused on the enhancement of the mountain, the care of the public spaces of the village, the creation of entertainment places for teenagers and the promotion of recipes and typical products of Vaccarizzo. This path has ignited so much energy in the community that in the following two years, despite Covid, cleaned the woods from garbage, planted flowers in the flower beds, reopened the post office, has established a community cooperative that has transformed the ACLI Circle in À Putiga, a minimarket run by three young local people.

Automatic Modeling and Object Identification in Radio Astronomy

Richard Fuchs, Jakob Knollmüller, Lukas Heinrich

Building appropriate models is crucial for imaging tasks in many fields but often challenging due to the richness of the systems. In radio astronomy, for example, wide-field observations can contain various and superposed structures that require different descriptions, such as filaments, point sources or compact objects. This work presents an automatic pipeline that iteratively adapts probabilistic models for such complex systems in order to improve the reconstructed images. It uses the Bayesian imaging library <tt>NIFTy</tt>, which is formulated in the language of information field theory. Starting with a preliminary reconstruction using a simple and flexible model, the pipeline employs deep learning and clustering methods to identify and separate different objects. In a further step, these objects are described by adding new building blocks to the model, allowing for a component separation in the next reconstruction step. This procedure can be repeated several times for refinement to iteratively improve the overall reconstruction. In addition, the individual components can be modeled at different resolutions allowing us to focus on important parts of the emission field without getting computationally too expensive.

Perspectives of Sound: Promoting Social Inclusion Under the Principle of “Access for All” in Museums

Yi Zhang, Raffaella Trocchianesi

It is predictable that the employment of sound in museums is inevitable for a multitude of different reasons. The contemporary museum’s emphasis on experience and participation has urged a transformation of its cultural paradigm. Multi-sensory experiences that mix auditory, visual, and tactile elements have become increasingly common in museums. Meanwhile, new demands have been placed on the museum experience as it begins to extend beyond the museum itself. It is appropriate for designers to develop a more holistic perspective on the audience’s connection to the exhibits and cultural content, which should also include consideration of sound content. This research examines inclusive construction in Lombardia museums through the perspective of sound. Inclusion is the starting point that sound can be engaged with, and sound contains other potentials to explore.

Do-It-Yourself Design in Times of Oil Crisis: From Nomadic Furniture to Metamobile (1973–74)

Sofia Nannini

This paper explores some of the consequences of the 1973 oil crisis on Western industrial design. Between 1973 and 1974, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, designers reacted to the uncertainty caused by the energy crisis with an unprecedented fascination for do-it-yourself solutions. This article discusses Victor Papanek and James Hennessay’s Nomadic furniture (1973–74) and Enzo Mari’s Proposta per un’autoprogettazione (1974), produced by Dino Gavina within the Simon International Metamobile series in the same year. The scope of this essay is to understand to what extent this sudden surge of interest in DIY furniture design, in the USA and in Italy, can be explained within the historical framework of the 1973 oil crisis.

Disruptive Ideas for Outer Space Through Design. How Design Can Play a Strategic Role Beyond the Earth

Annalisa Dominoni

The newly emerging discipline of space design is aimed both to enhance the research into well-being in outer space — increasing the comfort of the astronauts — and to generate innovation through the cross-fertilization between living in space and living on earth — intersecting different areas of knowledge and fields of applications that can be taken from space and translated to earth, and vice-versa, in space jargon, spin-offs and spin-ins. Space is a very stimulating world to explore for a designer who wants to deal with the new, the unknown, and who can imagine more suitable environments, extra-terrestrial habitats, and objects, which do not belong to our daily life experience on earth, but which could be very suitable, useful, and also beautiful, for a new generation of people who will inhabit and perform them. This paper presents the disruptive role of sensory design for space through a case study that acts as a bridge between science, technology and beauty thanks to the capacity to predict new behaviours, gestures and scenarios in conditions never experienced before by the human being.

LRS Bianchi-I Transit Cosmological Models in f(R,T) Gravity

Siwaphiwe Jokweni, Vijay Singh, Aroonkumar Beesham et al.

A locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi-I model is explored both in general relativity and in f(R,T) gravity, where R is the Ricci scalar and T is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Solutions have been found by means of a special Hubble parameter, yielding a hyperbolic hybrid scale factor. Some geometrical parameters have been studied. A comparison is made between solutions in general relativity and in f(R,T) gravity, where in both the theories, the models exhibit rich behaviour from stiff matter to quintessence, phantom, then later mimicking the cosmological constant, depending on some parameters.

Online learning during COVID-19 pandemic as perceived by the students of Graphic engineering and design

Ivana Tomić, Ivan Pinćjer, Sandra Dedijer et al.

In this work we wanted to determine how students of Graphic engineering and design perceived online learning a year after the transition from traditional to online classes. The goal was to better understand problems, challenges, and good sides of online learning in this study field, and determine factors that impede knowledge transfer. The students' responses were collected via an anonymous online survey, which consisted of a series of questions that covered: conditions in which online classes are attended, communication channels, problems and how they are dealt with, understanding and motivation. The biggest challenges for our students were to sustain their attention and concentration during classes despite the distractors in their environments, and to keep their motivation despite the lack of direct interaction, social isolation, and too much computer time. Their technological and digital literacy were of great use in adapting to the online platforms and applications, as well as in solving technical problems that prevented them from following the classes. Even though online courses allow students to be more flexible and potentially combine work and study, most of our students do not think that their attendance and engagement in the studies increased in the last period. It is also undisputed that our students were dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety and that their emotional state highly influenced their perception of online learning. Hence, we firmly believe that apart from making online courses more engaging and interactive, it is of utmost importance to find a proper way to motivate and psychologically support students in the online learning environment, especially in times that require a high degree of resilience.

How to Create Engaging Experiences From Human Emotions

Maura Mengoni, Silvia Ceccacci, Luca Giraldi et al.

There are several situations where the success of a product or a service depends on people’s emotional reactions while interacting with it. Feelings depends on the personal reaction to the values it offers. Therefore, it is not possible to presume that all persons will share the same reactions. An important challenge that designers have to face is to measure such feelings at every digital and physical touchpoint encountered by the customer and in which an experience takes place. In this context, the present research proposes an emotional-sensitive system able to measure the customer’s emotion and behavior and responsively adapt the experience to generate an individualized human-system interaction. It enables a continuous flow between analysis and reaction at every touchpoint of the customer experience. The paper illustrates the implementing technological framework, developed by EMOJ, an Italian startup leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and several applicative use cases.

Redesigning Public Street Lighting Using Photometric Method

Ade Gafar Abdullah, Muhammad Aziz, Muhammad Nur Huda

Street lighting with LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology is currently the main option of public lighting in almost every country. Even though LED technology is a less costly selection, there needs to be well planned in an attempt of acquiring high efficiency. The photometric approach was tested in this study in order to redesign the existing approach used in street lighting in Indonesia. The redesigning process was carried out using software namely DIALux on two different schemes; one with homogeneous luminaire and the other one with the non-homogeneous luminaire. The results of this study showed that the most significant factors in redesigning street lighting covered types of the lamp, pole distance, pole height, and proper lighting angles which could affect the illumination value on both the main road and the sidewalks. In addition, it has also been proven that a homogeneous approach using LED lamp lighting promoted uniformity as well as optimum illumination.

A novel design algorithm for multifunctional drawing table

Yuqi Guo, Weimiao Kong, Yuming Liu et al.

At present, although computer graphics and three-dimensional modeling design are becoming more and more popular, manual mechanical drawing, as one of the basic skills necessary for designers, still cannot be ignored. Therefore, the drawing table is one of the necessary tools for engineering designers. There are many types of drawing desks on the market, but the large multi-function is single, there are various defects, or multiple functions cannot be coordinated and used together. For example, the existing drawing desk only has the function of adjusting the elevation angle, and cannot be adjusted quickly and conveniently during use, which brings great trouble to the user. At the same time, although some drawing tables have added storage tables and storage devices, drawing tools and practical books are still placed on the desktop, and the height of the tables and chairs cannot be adjusted, which will be very inconvenient for different people to use. It is precisely for the above reasons, in order to make the most of the drawing table and play its due role, the product design concept of "multi-functional and practical drawing table" is proposed.

Lean Condition Procedure for Utilization of Silica from Rice Husk as Zeolite Precursor

Winarto Kurniawan, Hirofumi Hinode

Rice husk is rich in Si that makes it applicable as Si source for zeolite synthesis. However, the conventional method to use rice husk as a zeolite precursor has some drawbacks, which are: Si recovery method that involves burning and causing air pollution and carbon resources loss; and the use of severe conditions and sophisticated apparatuses which are not suitable for rural application where rice husk is mainly produced. In this paper, a method to prepare rice husk as zeolite Si source via a non-combustion process was proposed. Furthermore, its utilization as a zeolite precursor via moderate condition was also investigated. Si was recovered directly from rice husk using a sodium hydroxide solution. Si was successfully recovered from rice husk, and the optimum condition for recovery was found to be 1 N of NaOH and 16 hours of contact time. The application of the recovered Si for zeolite precursor at moderate condition was successful, and it was able to produce a product rich in zeolite P and zeolite X depending on the condition. Among zeolites synthesized in this experiment, the sample prepared by treatment time of 15 hours showed the highest cation exchange capacity, which makes it a promising material to be used as an ion-exchange agent.

Swarm Robotics Target Searching Strategy Based on Extended Bat Algorithm

Nur Aisyah Syafinaz, Dwi Pebrianti, Luhur Bayuaji et al.

A swarm robotics system can consists of at least two or up to hundreds or thousands number of robots. To build a system that is able to perform target searching task, it needs a robust algoritm and communication strategy. A wrong strategy can lead to unsatisfactory performance in which the swarm robots would unable to move efficiently and arrive at the target position precisely. This work aims to develop a new method for target searching strategy for swarm robotics system by adapting Extended Bat Algorithm (EBA) to the system. EBA is the low level hybrid algorithm of Bat Algorithm (BA) and Spiral Dynamic Algoruthm (SDA), and therefore its exploration and exploitation method is better than BA and SDA. EBA had proven its ability to solve general mathematical problem, however, for swarm robotics system application, its performance and effectiveness still needs to be comprehensively investigated. The investigation result shows that EBA can prove its potentiality to develop the best target searching strategy to the swarm robotics system with 5 number of iterations within 49 seconds. This is found to be the lowest number of iterations in the shortest of time. The accuracy is 99% to arrive at the desired location. Hence, the proposed EBA method is able to perform a target searching task for swarm robotics system.
