The Value of Finance Journals

Douglas Cumming

I present data from SCImago, 1999-2024, on factors that affect the valuation of finance journals. The SCImago data show some interesting facts; for example, in 2024, Finance Research Letters, valued at \$16.5 million, was four times more valuable than the Journal of Financial Economics (\$4.1m), five times more valuable than the Review of Financial Studies (\$3.3m), and over seven times more valuable than the Journal of Finance (\$2.3m). The data show that quality, as proxied by citations, positively affects journal value, and this value increase is heightened by citations from policy documents; similarly, the absence of quality, or a greater percentage of uncited documents, negatively affects journal value. The data indicate that the creation of the Elsevier Ecosystem of networked finance journals significantly enhances journal value. Further, a greater percentage of female authors positively impacts value. I discuss policy implications and suggestions for future work based on the evidence presented.

Beyond Citations: Measuring Idea-level Knowledge Diffusion from Research to Journalism and Policy-making

Yangliu Fan, Kilian Buehling, Volker Stocker

Despite the importance of social science knowledge for various stakeholders, measuring its diffusion into different domains remains a challenge. This study uses a novel text-based approach to measure the idea-level diffusion of social science knowledge from the research domain to the journalism and policy-making domains. By doing so, we expand the detection of knowledge diffusion beyond the measurements of direct references. Our study focuses on media effects theories as key research ideas in the field of communication science. Using 72,703 documents (2000-2019) from three domains (i.e., research, journalism, and policy-making) that mention these ideas, we count the mentions of these ideas in each domain, estimate their domain-specific contexts, and track and compare differences across domains and over time. Overall, we find that diffusion patterns and dynamics vary considerably between ideas, with some ideas diffusing between other domains, while others do not. Based on the embedding regression approach, we compare contextualized meanings across domains and find that the distances between research and policy are typically larger than between research and journalism. We also find that ideas largely shift roles across domains - from being the theories themselves in research to sense-making in news to applied, administrative use in policy. Over time, we observe semantic convergence mainly for ideas that are practically oriented. Our results characterize the cross-domain diffusion patterns and dynamics of social science knowledge at the idea level, and we discuss the implications for measuring knowledge diffusion beyond citations.

Is Journal Citation Indicator a good metric for Art & Humanities Journals currently?

Yu Liao, Li Li, Zhesi Shen

Probably Not. Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) was introduced to address the limitations of traditional metrics like the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), particularly its inability to normalize citation impact across different disciplines. This study reveals that JCI faces significant challenges in field normalization for Art & Humanities journals, as evidenced by much lower correlations with a more granular, paper-level metric, CNCI-CT. A detailed analysis of Architecture journals highlights how journal-level misclassification and the interdisciplinary nature of content exacerbate these issues, leading to less reliable evaluations. We recommend improving journal classification systems or adopting paper-level normalization methods, potentially supported by advanced AI techniques, to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of JCI for Art & Humanities disciplines.

A Quantitative Approach to Estimating Bias, Favouritism and Distortion in Scientific Journalism

Raghavendra Koushik, Hector Zenil

While traditionally not considered part of the scientific method, science communication is increasingly playing a pivotal role in shaping scientific practice. Researchers are now frequently compelled to publicise their findings in response to institutional impact metrics and competitive grant environments. This shift underscores the growing influence of media narratives on both scientific priorities and public perception. In a current trend of personality-driven reporting, we examine patterns in science communication that may indicate biases of different types, towards topics and researchers. We focused and applied our methodology to a corpus of media coverage from three of the most prominent scientific media outlets: Wired, Quanta, and The New Scientist -- spanning the past 5 to 10 years. By mapping linguistic patterns, citation flows, and topical convergence, our objective was to quantify the dimensions and degree of bias that influence the credibility of scientific journalism. In doing so, we seek to illuminate the systemic features that shape science communication today and to interrogate their broader implications for epistemic integrity and public accountability in science. We present our results with anonymised journalist names but conclude that personality-driven media coverage distorts science and the practice of science flattening rather than expanding scientific coverage perception. Keywords : selective sourcing, bias, scientific journalism, Quanta, Wired, New Scientist, fairness, balance, neutrality, standard practices, distortion, personal promotion, communication, media outlets.

Trends of Pink Slime Journalism Advertisement Expenditure and Spread on Facebook from 2019-2024

Christine Sowa Lepird, Lynnette Hui Xian Ng, Kathleen M. Carley

Pink slime journalism is a practice where news outlets publish low-quality or inflammatory partisan articles, claiming to be local news networks. This paper examines the spread of pink slime sites on Facebook using public posts from Pages and Groups. We evaluate the trends of sharing pink slime sites on Facebook and patterns regarding the advertisements purchased by the parent organizations of the pink slime news networks. Our analysis discovers that while the number of pink slime posts on Facebook pages have decreased over the years, advertising dollars have increased. The increase in advertising dollars influences an increase in Facebook group posts. Further, the advertising expenditure increases during election years, but contentious topics are still discussed during non-election years. By illustrating the patterns and themes from US election years of 2020, 2022, and 2024, this research offers insights into potentially dangerous journalism tactics, and provides predictions for future US Presidential Elections.

"This could save us months of work" -- Use Cases of AI and Automation Support in Investigative Journalism

Besjon Cifliku, Hendrik Heuer

As the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) expand, more researchers are studying their adoption in newsrooms. However, much of the research focus remains broad and does not address the specific technical needs of investigative journalists. Therefore, this paper presents several applied use cases where automation and AI intersect with investigative journalism. We conducted a within-subjects user study with eight investigative journalists. In interviews, we elicited practical use cases using a speculative design approach by having journalists react to a prototype of a system that combines LLMs and Programming-by-Demonstration (PbD) to simplify data collection on numerous websites. Based on user reports, we classified the journalistic processes into data collecting and reporting. Participants indicated they utilize automation to handle repetitive tasks like content monitoring, web scraping, summarization, and preliminary data exploration. Following these insights, we provide guidelines on how investigative journalism can benefit from AI and automation.

Jatkuvasti kehittyvällä digitaalisella aikakaudella sosiaalisen median rooli yritysten, erityisesti mikroyrittäjien, viestintästrategioiden kehittämisessä on tärkeämpää kuin koskaan.

More Inclusive and Wider Sources: A Comparative Analysis of Data and Political Journalists on Twitter (Now X) in Germany

Benedict Witzenberger, Jürgen Pfeffer

Women are underrepresented in many areas of journalistic newsrooms. In this paper, we examine if this established effect persists in the new forms of journalistic communication, namely social media networks. We use mentions, retweets, and hashtags as measures of journalistic amplification and legitimation. Furthermore, we compare two groups of journalists in different stages of development: political and data journalists in Germany in 2021. Our results show that journalists identified as women tend to favor other women journalists in mentions and retweets on Twitter (now called X), compared to men. While both professions are dominated by men, with a high share of tweets authored by men, women mention and retweet other women more than their male colleagues. Female data journalists also leverage different sources than men. In addition, we found data journalists to be more inclusive of non-member sources in their networks compared to political journalists.

Making AI Intelligible: Philosophical Foundations

Herman Cappelen, Josh Dever

Can humans and artificial intelligences share concepts and communicate? 'Making AI Intelligible' shows that philosophical work on the metaphysics of meaning can help answer these questions. Herman Cappelen and Josh Dever use the externalist tradition in philosophy to create models of how AIs and humans can understand each other. In doing so, they illustrate ways in which that philosophical tradition can be improved. The questions addressed in the book are not only theoretically interesting, but the answers have pressing practical implications. Many important decisions about human life are now influenced by AI. In giving that power to AI, we presuppose that AIs can track features of the world that we care about (for example, creditworthiness, recidivism, cancer, and combatants). If AIs can share our concepts, that will go some way towards justifying this reliance on AI. This ground-breaking study offers insight into how to take some first steps towards achieving Interpretable AI.

Catholic Media in the Hands of Laics: Case Study of Vatican Communication Chiefs’ Twitter Activities

Tereza Zavadilová

The shape of religious media communication changed dramatically because of the opportunities given by digital media and by the process of the secularization, structural changes in religious organizations, and the challenge enabled by the huge loss of credibility in the eyes of the world. We can observe certain dynamics in the professional approach of official Catholic media, especially those based in the Vatican. Its on-line project Vatican News has provided news service since 2017, now in almost forty languages. In the spirit of continuing the reform of the Roman curia, for which the founding of Secretary for Communication (now dicastery) was the “pilot” area, Pope Francis appointed the first layperson to lead any office of curia in 2018, and journalist Paolo Ruffini became the prefect. A few months later, one of most famous experts on the Vatican, also a lay person, journalist Andrea Tornielli, became editorial chief of the Dicastery for Communication. Other personal changes continued soon. The goal of this article is to analyse the initiative that Ruffini and Tornielli took in their office during six months after their appointment. The quantitative content analysis of both their Twitter accounts, closely connected with the newscast produced by Vatican News, is the scientific method used in this paper. There were detected new journalistic genres in the social media space (e.g., short video, editorial, story), vast popularity of Pope Francis, and success of his own Twitter activity (he obtained even tens of thousands of followers) or, contrarily, the omission and inconsistency when introducing uneasy themes (abuse crisis in the Catholic Church, ecology or economy) to the public. There was also the surprising realization that Ruffini is more popular in the Twitter milieu than Tornielli.

Adolescentes y culto al cuerpo: influencia de la publicidad y de Internet en la búsqueda del cuerpo masculino idealizado

Carlos Fanjul Peyró, Lorena López Font, Cristina González Oñate

This article presents the results of a research aimed at studying whether the vision of advertising images of defined masculine models influences the corporal perception of male adolescents and how they find in the Internet a reinforcement of this ideal of beauty. As study methodologies, in order to analyse the influence on body perception, an experimental study was conducted with 552 adolescents using techniques of viewing ads and surveys and content analysis to assess the information offered by the Internet on issues related to achieving a muscular body. The results show the remarkable influence of viewing of defined bodies in male adolescents and the unconscious use they make of the Internet to seek information and recommendations in this regards.

Active participation and student journal in Confucian heritage culture mathematics classrooms

N. Karjanto

This article discusses an effort to encourage student-instructor interactive engagement through active learning activities during class time. We not only encouraged our students to speak out when an opportunity arises but also required them to record their active participation in a student journal throughout the semester. In principle, any activities which constitute active learning can and should be recorded in a student journal. These include, but are not limited to, reading definition, theorem, problem, etc.; responding to questions and inquiries; asking questions; and pointing out some mistakes during class time. Despite an incentive for this participation, our experience teaching different mathematics courses in several consecutive semesters indicates that many students resist speaking out publicly, submitting empty journals at the end of the semester instead. Students' feedback on teaching evaluation at the end of the semester reveals that many students dislike and are against the idea of active participation and recording it in the journal. This paper discusses the reason behind this resistance and provides some potential remedies to alleviate the situation.

Collective Strategies with a Master-slave Mechanism Dominate in Spatial Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma

Jiawei Li, etc

How cooperation emerges and persists in a population of selfish agents is a fundamental question in evolutionary game theory. Our research shows that Collective Strategies with Master-Slave Mechanism (CSMSM) defeat Tit-for-Tat and other well-known strategies in spatial iterated prisoner's dilemma. A CSMSM identifies kin members by means of a handshaking mechanism. If the opponent is identified as non-kin, a CSMSM will always defect. Once two CSMSMs meet, they play master and slave roles. A mater defects and a slave cooperates in order to maximize the master's payoff. CSMSM outperforms non-collective strategies in spatial IPD even if there is only a small cluster of CSMSMs in the population. The existence and performance of CSMSM in spatial iterated prisoner's dilemma suggests that cooperation first appears and persists in a group of collective agents.

Rookie: A unique approach for exploring news archives

Abram Handler, Brendan O'Connor

News archives are an invaluable primary source for placing current events in historical context. But current search engine tools do a poor job at uncovering broad themes and narratives across documents. We present Rookie: a practical software system which uses natural language processing (NLP) to help readers, reporters and editors uncover broad stories in news archives. Unlike prior work, Rookie's design emerged from 18 months of iterative development in consultation with editors and computational journalists. This process lead to a dramatically different approach from previous academic systems with similar goals. Our efforts offer a generalizable case study for others building real-world journalism software using NLP.
