Current state and development trends of international services markets

A.O. Kravchenko, A.O. Simakhova

Services refer to transactions between a buyer and a seller without the transfer of any physical goods or merchandise using resources, experience, skills, ingenuity and intelligence. This mainly involves the use of resources, experience, skills, ingenuity and intelligence. The main types of services include civil services, real estate, leasing, commercial services, personal services, and repair and maintenance. The purpose of the article is to analyze the formation of the current state and outline the main trends in the development of the global services market. To achieve this goal, the article uses general scientific methods of synthesis and analysis, comparison and generalization. The service industry creates value that is mostly intangible and includes such sectors and activities as recruitment, accounting and consulting, legal services, customer service, training and development, and knowledge and data. Companies and individuals operating in this sector focus on using knowledge, information and expertise to provide services and/or transform goods for businesses, the public sector, and individual customers. Over the past century, the service sector has expanded rapidly to become the largest sector of the economy in most developed countries. The expansion of the services industry is the result of increased knowledge, rapid technological growth, and the development of fast communication and infrastructure that have occurred in recent decades. The article outlines the risks to the development of the services market: regulatory barriers, economic instability, and the need for continuous technological improvement. For the effective development of the global services market, it is necessary to adapt business strategies to the latest trends and challenges of the global market. The author establishes that states and international organizations should promote the creation of favorable conditions for the development of the service sector by improving legislation, attracting investment and developing infrastructure. Such a comprehensive approach will help to achieve stable growth of the service sector and ensure its global competitiveness.

ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY FOR MANAGING MARKETING ACTIVITIES OF OPEN SOCIO-ECONOMIC SYSTEMS THROUGH THE FORMATION OF SECURITY CONDITIONS FOR FUNCTIONING

Мирослав Криштанович, Дмитро Міщенко, Вероніка Чала et al.

The article identifies the features of the formation of an adaptive strategy for managing marketing activities of open socio-economic systems operating in a changing market environment. The need for a balanced approach is proven, which combines measures to improve marketing processes with the formation of security conditions for the enterprise's activities. For the purpose of in-depth analysis, the feasibility of using the method of forming complex assessments is substantiated, which allows quantitatively assessing the contribution of each component of the adaptive strategy, taking into account the probability of risks and potential benefits. The effectiveness of the expert analysis method is also established, thanks to which experts' assessments of the real suitability and flexibility of the developed strategy in conditions of market instability were obtained. The study characterized the main elements of the proposed adaptive strategy: direct and indirect forms of response to market challenges, hard and soft management mechanisms, and permanent and promising tools for ensuring the security of functioning. Based on the integration of comprehensive assessments and expert opinions, it is proven that the developed strategy not only provides a higher level of consumer satisfaction and growth in financial indicators but also contributes to the formation of sustainable reputational capital. At the same time, the possibilities for effective resource allocation and targeted prevention of possible crisis situations are expanded. Thus, it has been established that the proposed methodology for assessing and building an adaptive strategy for managing marketing activities of open socio-economic systems, which covers both quantitative indicators and an expert approach, is an effective tool for increasing the flexibility and security of the functioning of enterprises in modern conditions.

A Method to Measure Neighborhood Quality with Hedonic Price Models in Three Latin American Cities

Marco Aurélio Stumpf González, Diego Alfonso Erba

Location effects play a crucial role in the real estate market, encompassing aspects of accessibility and neighborhood quality. While traditional measures exist for accessibility, evaluating neighborhood quality can be a complex task. Understanding these elements is essential for accurately estimating property values, whether for commercial or tax purposes. Recently developed methods based on web scraping and automatic detection using artificial intelligence have proven effective but require substantial human and financial resources, often unavailable in small cities. As a solution, this study proposes and evaluates a simpler mechanism for assessing neighborhood quality using Google Street View images and a scoring system in a human-centered approach. Based on image interpretation, a set of weights is assigned to each point, resulting in a micro-neighborhood quality assessment. This study was conducted in three Latin American cities, and the resulting variable was integrated into hedonic price models. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The novelty of this study lies in applying a method based on quasi-objective criteria and adapted to cities with limited technological resources.

Agent Bain vs. Agent McKinsey: A New Text-to-SQL Benchmark for the Business Domain

Yue Li, Ran Tao, Derek Hommel et al.

Text-to-SQL benchmarks have traditionally only tested simple data access as a translation task of natural language to SQL queries. But in reality, users tend to ask diverse questions that require more complex responses including data-driven predictions or recommendations. Using the business domain as a motivating example, we introduce CORGI, a new benchmark that expands text-to-SQL to reflect practical database queries encountered by end users. CORGI is composed of synthetic databases inspired by enterprises such as DoorDash, Airbnb, and Lululemon. It provides questions across four increasingly complicated categories of business queries: descriptive, explanatory, predictive, and recommendational. This challenge calls for causal reasoning, temporal forecasting, and strategic recommendation, reflecting multi-level and multi-step agentic intelligence. We find that LLM performance degrades on higher-level questions as question complexity increases. CORGI also introduces and encourages the text-to-SQL community to consider new automatic methods for evaluating open-ended, qualitative responses in data access tasks. Our experiments show that LLMs exhibit an average 33.12% lower success execution rate (SER) on CORGI compared to existing benchmarks such as BIRD, highlighting the substantially higher complexity of real-world business needs. We release the CORGI dataset, an evaluation framework, and a submission website to support future research.

Supporting decision-making processes in the assessment of water-related risks: a review of models and methods [Supportare i processi decisionali nella valutazione del rischio idraulico e geologico: una rassegna di modelli e metodi]

Caterina Caprioli, Chiara D’Alpaos

The whole world is experiencing the impact of climate change, with an increase in the severity and frequency of water-related hazards and risks at different territorial levels. Consequently, enhancing territorial resilience and reducing these risks have emerged as one of today’s biggest challenges. Within this context, policymakers and planners need robust and transparent decision-making tools to effectively solve and rapidly respond to water-related hazards. This paper reviews the literature on these issues with the aim of providing a systematic overview of the current assessment of water-related hazards and risks. This review can afford an in-depth understanding of the role of evaluation methods in supporting policymakers in the design of cost-effective risk management strategies. We first provide an overview of the procedures for the assessment of hydrological and hydrogeological hazards and risks. We then identify gaps in current evaluation methods, particularly in terms of the economic consequences of these risks. Finally, we list the criteria from the literature that can be successfully adopted to assess water-related risks and to evaluate mitigation actions and interventions. Our findings reveal that significant advances are still needed to improve the robustness of the evaluation of the economic and financial impacts of water-related risks. The study can offer some important insights into decision-making and management processes for water-related risks, as well as a guide for future research focused on the multidimensionality of these issues.

Exploring the Future Metaverse: Research Models for User Experience, Business Readiness, and National Competitiveness

Amir Reza Asadi, Shiva Ghasemi

This systematic literature review paper explores perspectives on the ideal metaverse from user experience, business, and national levels, considering both academic and industry viewpoints. The study examines the metaverse as a sociotechnical imaginary, enabled collectively by virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies. Through a systematic literature review, n=144 records were included and by employing grounded theory for analysis of data, we developed three research models, which can guide researchers in examining the metaverse as a sociotechnical future of information technology. Designers can apply the metaverse user experience maturity model to develop more user-friendly services, while business strategists can use the metaverse business readiness model to assess their firms' current state and prepare for transformation. Additionally, policymakers and policy analysts can utilize the metaverse national competitiveness model to track their countries' competitiveness during this paradigm shift. The synthesis of the results also led to the development of practical assessment tools derived from these models that can guide researchers

Characteristics of the Board of Directors and Corporate Financial Performance—Empirical Evidence

Van Chien Nguyen, Thi Ngoc Thuan Huynh

The objectives of the research are to investigate the characteristics of the Board of Directors on the financial performance of the enterprise using sample data from 52 construction and real estate enterprises listed on the Vietnam stock exchange in the period 2006–2020. Using typical regression methods such as pooled OLS, FEM, REM, and assessing the defects of the research model, the FGLS method is selected. At the same time, due to the existence of endogenous phenomena and the nature of interdependence among enterprises in Vietnam, research using the instrumental variables two-step generalized method of moments (IV-GMM) is conducted in order to correct for cross-sectional dependence, autocorrelation, endogeneity, and heteroskedasticity in the analysis. Research results suggest that board size, female board members, meeting frequency, and board members’ education have a positive influence on financial performance. Moreover, as the independence of the Board of Directors increases, the business efficiency decreases. The research also found a positive relationship of tangible fixed assets, and a negative relationship between capital structure choice, firm size, and corporate financial performance. Finally, we propose some implications for enhancing the financial performance of Vietnamese firms.

Municipal Housing Stock Management in Poland from a Public Management Perspective

Muczyński Andrzej

This paper identifies the management of municipal housing stock as an area of public management in an urban municipality, taking into account the legal, institutional and market conditions in Poland. In order to achieve this aim, the author examined relevant literature and pertinent legislation and employed an analysis of source (organizational) documentation on the management of municipal housing stock in provincial capital cities. The paper begins by discussing the essence, distinctive characteristics and concepts of public management as a sub-discipline of management sciences. Subsequently, it outlines the specificity of public management in a municipality as a local government unit. Against this background, the author goes on to identify the management of municipal housing stock from the standpoint of public management in an urban municipality by formulating its definition in a broad and narrow sense, followed by a synthetic characterization of this management in a functional and institutional approach, considering its basic organizational models. The research demonstrated that the management of municipal housing stock is subject to progressive marketization and tends to be shaped by such public management mechanisms as hierarchy, market and network. These mechanisms cause this management to operate in practice in a hybrid system.

Limits and perspectives of Neighbourhood Sustainable Assessment Tools (NSATs) in sustainable urban design [Limiti e prospettive dei Neighbourhood Sustainable Assessment Tools (NSATs) nella progettazione urbana sostenibile]

Francesca Abastante

This paper aims to investigate the role of sustainability protocols at the neighborhood scale (Neighborhood Sustainable Assessment Tools) as possible tools to support the measurement of sustainability to implement effective design strategies for the built environment. Despite that cities and the built environment are at the forefront of achieving the complex goal of sustainable development, there is still a gap regarding what are the most appropriate ways and tools to measure and monitor the performance of urban transformation projects in terms of sustainable development. This difficulty is particularly evident when considering the sustainability paradigm in its Triple Bottom Line acception, which includes social and economic aspects in addition to environmental ones. In fact, while there are many established methodologies to measure the environmental performance of projects, the same cannot be said for the measurement of social and economic aspects, especially from an integrated perspective. Based on these premises, the present research analyzes three of the main NSATs at the European level, comparing them in terms of evaluation model and responsiveness to the main spheres of sustainability in order to trace limitations and perspectives.

COVID-19 Demand Shocks Revisited: Did Advertising Technology Help Mitigate Adverse Consequences for Small and Midsize Businesses?

Shun-Yang Lee, Julian Runge, Daniel Yoo et al.

Research has investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business performance and survival, indicating particularly adverse effects for small and midsize businesses (SMBs). Yet only limited work has examined whether and how online advertising technology may have helped shape these outcomes, particularly for SMBs. The aim of this study is to address this gap. By constructing and analyzing a novel data set of more than 60,000 businesses in 49 countries, we examine the impact of government lockdowns on business survival. Using discrete-time survival models with instrumental variables and staggered difference-in-differences estimators, we find that government lockdowns increased the likelihood of SMB closure around the world but that use of online advertising technology attenuates this adverse effect. The findings show heterogeneity in country, industry, and business size, which we discuss and is consistent with theoretical expectations.

A real-time algorithm for human action recognition in RGB and thermal video

Hannes Fassold, Karlheinz Gutjahr, Anna Weber et al.

Monitoring the movement and actions of humans in video in real-time is an important task. We present a deep learning based algorithm for human action recognition for both RGB and thermal cameras. It is able to detect and track humans and recognize four basic actions (standing, walking, running, lying) in real-time on a notebook with a NVIDIA GPU. For this, it combines state of the art components for object detection (Scaled YoloV4), optical flow (RAFT) and pose estimation (EvoSkeleton). Qualitative experiments on a set of tunnel videos show that the proposed algorithm works robustly for both RGB and thermal video.

Evolution of Relationship Between Housing and Rental Prices and Inter-Urban Differences in China Under the Context of the Simultaneous Rental and Sales Markets Policy

Wu Guancen, Li Chen, Niu Xing et al.

This research analyzes the relationship between housing and rental prices in 26 first-tier and second-tier cities in China before and after the policy of simultaneous rental and sales markets. The PVAR model and monthly panel data of these cities from June 2010 to December 2018 were employed. The study found that, before the policy of simultaneous rental and sales markets took effect, the housing and rental prices were relatively independent of each other, whereas the rental market in second-tier cities is affected more considerably by the sales market. After the enactment of the policy on simultaneous rental and sales markets, rental prices have a positive effect on housing prices, with this effect being more obvious in second-tier cities. The rental prices with the first-order lag have a significant negative impact on current rental price in first-tier cities. Considering the features of the housing market in different cities, the implementation of the simultaneous rental and sales markets policy needs to be more targeted and attention should be paid to preventing simultaneous irrational growth, both on the sales and rental markets.

“Should i stay or should i go?”: a multiple-criteria group decision-making approach to SME internationalization

Miguel S. M. Rosário, Fernando A. F. Ferreira, Amali Çipi et al.

Due to domestic markets’ current economic conditions, companies increasingly feel that they need to become actively involved in international trade. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) typically face financial and intellectual constraints during internationalization processes. This means that decision makers must consider a wide range of different variables before deciding to internationalize firms. This study sought to integrate a well-established problem structuring method (i.e., cognitive mapping) and a multiple-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) technique (i.e., Decision EXpert (DEX)) in order to develop a decision model suitable for the identification and assessment of variables influencing SME internationalization capability. Using data collected during face-to-face meetings with a panel of experts (i.e., SME entrepreneurs and chief executive officers (CEOs)), a constructivist method of evaluating SME internationalization capability was created and tested using real data. The results confirm that the dual methodology adopted facilitates the development of a robust evaluation model that can improve decisionmaking processes in the context in question. Specifically, the proposed model identifies product features as the most important factor in SME capability for successful internationalization. In addition, internal factors are significantly more relevant than external factors. The integrated use of cognitive mapping and DEX provides decision makers with a well-informed perspective on SME internationalization capability. We know of no prior research reporting the use of these two methodologies in the SME internationalization context.

C^3Net: End-to-End deep learning for efficient real-time visual active camera control

Christos Kyrkou

The need for automated real-time visual systems in applications such as smart camera surveillance, smart environments, and drones necessitates the improvement of methods for visual active monitoring and control. Traditionally, the active monitoring task has been handled through a pipeline of modules such as detection, filtering, and control. However, such methods are difficult to jointly optimize and tune their various parameters for real-time processing in resource constraint systems. In this paper a deep Convolutional Camera Controller Neural Network is proposed to go directly from visual information to camera movement to provide an efficient solution to the active vision problem. It is trained end-to-end without bounding box annotations to control a camera and follow multiple targets from raw pixel values. Evaluation through both a simulation framework and real experimental setup, indicate that the proposed solution is robust to varying conditions and able to achieve better monitoring performance than traditional approaches both in terms of number of targets monitored as well as in effective monitoring time. The advantage of the proposed approach is that it is computationally less demanding and can run at over 10 FPS (~4x speedup) on an embedded smart camera providing a practical and affordable solution to real-time active monitoring.

A variational Bayesian spatial interaction model for estimating revenue and demand at business facilities

Shanaka Perera, Virginia Aglietti, Theodoros Damoulas

We study the problem of estimating potential revenue or demand at business facilities and understanding its generating mechanism. This problem arises in different fields such as operation research or urban science, and more generally, it is crucial for businesses' planning and decision making. We develop a Bayesian spatial interaction model, henceforth BSIM, which provides probabilistic predictions about revenues generated by a particular business location provided their features and the potential customers' characteristics in a given region. BSIM explicitly accounts for the competition among the competitive facilities through a probability value determined by evaluating a store-specific Gaussian distribution at a given customer location. We propose a scalable variational inference framework that, while being significantly faster than competing Markov Chain Monte Carlo inference schemes, exhibits comparable performances in terms of parameters identification and uncertainty quantification. We demonstrate the benefits of BSIM in various synthetic settings characterised by an increasing number of stores and customers. Finally, we construct a real-world, large spatial dataset for pub activities in London, UK, which includes over 1,500 pubs and 150,000 customer regions. We demonstrate how BSIM outperforms competing approaches on this large dataset in terms of prediction performances while providing results that are both interpretable and consistent with related indicators observed for the London region.

A Taxonomy and Archetypes of Business Analytics in Smart Manufacturing

Jonas Wanner, Christopher Wissuchek, Giacomo Welsch et al.

Fueled by increasing data availability and the rise of technological advances for data processing and communication, business analytics is a key driver for smart manufacturing. However, due to the multitude of different local advances as well as its multidisciplinary complexity, both researchers and practitioners struggle to keep track of the progress and acquire new knowledge within the field, as there is a lack of a holistic conceptualization. To address this issue, we performed an extensive structured literature review, yielding 904 relevant hits, to develop a quadripartite taxonomy as well as to derive archetypes of business analytics in smart manufacturing. The taxonomy comprises the following meta-characteristics: application domain, orientation as the objective of the analysis, data origins, and analysis techniques. Collectively, they comprise eight dimensions with a total of 52 distinct characteristics. Using a cluster analysis, we found six archetypes that represent a synthesis of existing knowledge on planning, maintenance (reactive, offline, and online predictive), monitoring, and quality management. A temporal analysis highlights the push beyond predictive approaches and confirms that deep learning already dominates novel applications. Our results constitute an entry point to the field but can also serve as a reference work and a guide with which to assess the adequacy of one's own instruments.
