Improving AGI Evaluation: A Data Science Perspective
John Hawkins
Evaluation of potential AGI systems and methods is difficult due to the breadth of the engineering goal. We have no methods for perfect evaluation of the end state, and instead measure performance on small tests designed to provide directional indication that we are approaching AGI. In this work we argue that AGI evaluation methods have been dominated by a design philosophy that uses our intuitions of what intelligence is to create synthetic tasks, that have performed poorly in the history of AI. Instead we argue for an alternative design philosophy focused on evaluating robust task execution that seeks to demonstrate AGI through competence. This perspective is developed from common practices in data science that are used to show that a system can be reliably deployed. We provide practical examples of what this would mean for AGI evaluation.
Physical, Empirical, and Conditional Inductive Possibility
Balazs Gyenis
I argue that John Norton's notions of empirical, hypothetical, and counterfactual possibility can be successfully used to analyze counterintuitive examples of physical possibility and align better with modal intuitions of practicing physicists. First, I clarify the relationship between Norton's possibility notions and the received view of logical and physical possibility. In particular, I argue that Norton's empirical, hypothetical, and counterfactual possibility cannot coincide with the received view of physical possibility; instead, the received view of physical possibility is a special case of Norton's logical possibility. I illustrate my claims using examples from Classical Mechanics, General Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics. I then arrive at my conclusions by subsuming Norton's empirical, hypothetical, and counterfactual possibilities under a single concept of conditional inductive possibility and by analyzing the types and degrees of strengths that can be associated with it.
Philosophical Foundations of Law’s Relationship with Mathematics: Is Law Having Mathematical Certainty?
Murat Bayram
Mathematics is often given as an example of the precision and perfection of reasoning. The success achieved through the methods of mathematics has encouraged the use of mathematical techniques in various fields and among thinkers. In particular, the logical axioms, which are the indisputable truths about mathematical concepts, have been applied in the field of law with the success seen in the natural sciences. Logic has often served as a tool for law, helping it achieve its purpose. Lawyers use logical techniques to address deficiencies in legal practice. In this regard, logical techniques are considered to provide mathematical certainty in law. Positivists and natural law theorists approach mathematical certainty differently. While the positivist approach focuses on the purely axiomatic dimension of mathematics, the natural law perspective emphasizes the a priori domain. In this context, we discuss whether the synthetic a priori plane of mathematical propositions is valid for legal rules. By examining the historical development of logic and mathematics, this study explores their influence on the mathematical certainty of law and its relationship with legal concepts and the world of existence. This study also aims to evaluate the ontological domains of mathematics and law from a philosophical perspective. The main objectives of this study are to evaluate the ontological relationship between mathematics and law and to examine the extent to which mathematical precision can be applied in the field of law.

Enhancing Contrastive Learning Inspired by the Philosophy of "The Blind Men and the Elephant"
Yudong Zhang, Ruobing Xie, Jiansheng Chen
et al.
Contrastive learning is a prevalent technique in self-supervised vision representation learning, typically generating positive pairs by applying two data augmentations to the same image. Designing effective data augmentation strategies is crucial for the success of contrastive learning. Inspired by the story of the blind men and the elephant, we introduce JointCrop and JointBlur. These methods generate more challenging positive pairs by leveraging the joint distribution of the two augmentation parameters, thereby enabling contrastive learning to acquire more effective feature representations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort to explicitly incorporate the joint distribution of two data augmentation parameters into contrastive learning. As a plug-and-play framework without additional computational overhead, JointCrop and JointBlur enhance the performance of SimCLR, BYOL, MoCo v1, MoCo v2, MoCo v3, SimSiam, and Dino baselines with notable improvements.
Can a Machine be Conscious? Towards Universal Criteria for Machine Consciousness
Nur Aizaan Anwar, Cosmin Badea
As artificially intelligent systems become more anthropomorphic and pervasive, and their potential impact on humanity more urgent, discussions about the possibility of machine consciousness have significantly intensified, and it is sometimes seen as 'the holy grail'. Many concerns have been voiced about the ramifications of creating an artificial conscious entity. This is compounded by a marked lack of consensus around what constitutes consciousness and by an absence of a universal set of criteria for determining consciousness. By going into depth on the foundations and characteristics of consciousness, we propose five criteria for determining whether a machine is conscious, which can also be applied more generally to any entity. This paper aims to serve as a primer and stepping stone for researchers of consciousness, be they in philosophy, computer science, medicine, or any other field, to further pursue this holy grail of philosophy, neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

Professional Resilience of Specialists in Helping Professions: Analysis of Domestic and Foreign Studies
A.A. Osintseva, V.A. Kapustina

The article is devoted to the review of national and foreign studies in professional resilience. The analyzed researches demonstrate that it is typical for foreign psychological science to consider professional resilience as a set of resources that allows a specialist in a difficult situation to provide himself with psychological well-being, which requires the skills of taking care of himself and his psychological state, providing self-help and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. The data of foreign empirical studies of professional resilience of specialists in helping professions have shown a correlation between professional resilience and emotional burnout, psychological well-being, self-compassion, and creative thinking. Also, researchers note the need for the formation of professional resilience in the educational process and labor activity. National researchers consider resilience mainly as the ability to manage functions and processes (coping, recovery) based on the internal resources of the individual, external and internal protective factors in difficult conditions in order to adapt to them and restore life satisfaction.

Why people judge humans differently from machines: The role of perceived agency and experience
Jingling Zhang, Jane Conway, César A. Hidalgo
People are known to judge artificial intelligence using a utilitarian moral philosophy and humans using a moral philosophy emphasizing perceived intentions. But why do people judge humans and machines differently? Psychology suggests that people may have different mind perception models of humans and machines, and thus, will treat human-like robots more similarly to the way they treat humans. Here we present a randomized experiment where we manipulated people's perception of machine agency (e.g., ability to plan, act) and experience (e.g., ability to feel) to explore whether people judge machines that are perceived to be more similar to humans along these two dimensions more similarly to the way they judge humans. We find that people's judgments of machines become more similar to that of humans when they perceive machines as having more agency but not more experience. Our findings indicate that people's use of different moral philosophies to judge humans and machines can be explained by a progression of mind perception models where the perception of agency plays a prominent role. These findings add to the body of evidence suggesting that people's judgment of machines becomes more similar to that of humans motivating further work on dimensions modulating people's judgment of human and machine actions.
The Review and Translation of the Autobiographic Section of Sheikh Alî al-Bistâmî Musannifak’s Work Named “Tuhfa-i Mahmûdî/Tuhfa al-Vuzara”: A Classical Resume Sample
Ümit Karaver, Mohammad Taghi Hosseini
Sheikh Alî al-Bistâmî Musannifak (d. 875/1470), one of the outstanding scholars of his century, spent part of his maturity period in Khorasan after his childhood and youth. Later, he migrated to the land of Rum (Anatolia) and held scientific, military and administrative duties. Musannifak, who came to the Ottoman world at the beginning of the Hijri 860’s, made an effort to introduce himself and established close relations with Grand Vizier Mahmûd Pasha (d. 878/1474). The author dedicated his work Tuhfa-i Mahmûdî/Tuhfa al-vuzara, a work of political advice, to Mahmûd Pasha. This Persian work, completed in Edirne on Thursday, 12 Cemaziyelevvel 861/7 April 1457, is the first work the author wrote when he came to the Ottoman world. The author, who was in search of patronage and seems to have been trying to show off his career, also talked about his family, teachers, ijazets, journeys and books in the eighth chapter of the work consisting of ten chapters. This part, which includes Musannifak’s autobiography, is an interesting example of a biography from the classical period. The section, which can be viewed as analogous to a CV presentation to the prospective employer in today’s terms, has not been the subject of significant scholarly work. In our article, the relevant material has been corrected, translated, and examined from different perspectives.

The impact of employees' pro-environmental behaviors on corporate green innovation performance: The mediating effect of green organizational identity
Zujie Cheng, Banggang Wu, Xiaoyu Deng
et al.
Employees' behaviors, as well as the employees' pro-environmental behaviors (PEB), affect the company in many dimensions. Although green innovation performance (GIP) has become an important measurement of a corporate's green development, research investigating PEB from the employees' perspective remains scarce, especially in emerging markets. Therefore, in this study, we developed an original framework to explore the effects of employees' PEB on corporate GIP and examined the underlying mechanism by conducting a survey in China. The results of the empirical analysis showed that employees' PEB increases corporate GIP by positively influencing green organizational identity (GOI). In addition, we also proved how leaders' PEB positively influences GIP, whereas innovation resistance (both technology resistance and resource resistance) has a negative effect on GIP. This study attempted to contribute to theoretical research and practical decision-making in the field of green organizational behavior.
The General Theory of General Intelligence: A Pragmatic Patternist Perspective
Ben Goertzel
A multi-decade exploration into the theoretical foundations of artificial and natural general intelligence, which has been expressed in a series of books and papers and used to guide a series of practical and research-prototype software systems, is reviewed at a moderate level of detail. The review covers underlying philosophies (patternist philosophy of mind, foundational phenomenological and logical ontology), formalizations of the concept of intelligence, and a proposed high level architecture for AGI systems partly driven by these formalizations and philosophies. The implementation of specific cognitive processes such as logical reasoning, program learning, clustering and attention allocation in the context and language of this high level architecture is considered, as is the importance of a common (e.g. typed metagraph based) knowledge representation for enabling "cognitive synergy" between the various processes. The specifics of human-like cognitive architecture are presented as manifestations of these general principles, and key aspects of machine consciousness and machine ethics are also treated in this context. Lessons for practical implementation of advanced AGI in frameworks such as OpenCog Hyperon are briefly considered.

Reinforcement Learning Under Moral Uncertainty
Adrien Ecoffet, Joel Lehman
An ambitious goal for machine learning is to create agents that behave ethically: The capacity to abide by human moral norms would greatly expand the context in which autonomous agents could be practically and safely deployed, e.g. fully autonomous vehicles will encounter charged moral decisions that complicate their deployment. While ethical agents could be trained by rewarding correct behavior under a specific moral theory (e.g. utilitarianism), there remains widespread disagreement about the nature of morality. Acknowledging such disagreement, recent work in moral philosophy proposes that ethical behavior requires acting under moral uncertainty, i.e. to take into account when acting that one's credence is split across several plausible ethical theories. This paper translates such insights to the field of reinforcement learning, proposes two training methods that realize different points among competing desiderata, and trains agents in simple environments to act under moral uncertainty. The results illustrate (1) how such uncertainty can help curb extreme behavior from commitment to single theories and (2) several technical complications arising from attempting to ground moral philosophy in RL (e.g. how can a principled trade-off between two competing but incomparable reward functions be reached). The aim is to catalyze progress towards morally-competent agents and highlight the potential of RL to contribute towards the computational grounding of moral philosophy.
Theodorus' lesson in Plato's Theaetetus (147d1-d6) Revisited-A New Perspective
Luc Brisson, Salomon Ofman
This article is the first part of a study of the so-called 'mathematical part' of Plato's Theaetetus (147d-148b). The subject of this 'mathematical part' is the irrationality, one of the most important topics in early Greek mathematics. As of huge interest for mathematicians, historians of mathematics as well as of philosophy, there had been an avalanche of studies about it. In our work, we revisit this question, for we think something is missing: a global analysis of Plato's text, from these three points of view simultaneously: history, mathematics and philosophy. It is what we have undertook through a new translation, a new interpretation of the mathematical lesson about irrational magnitudes and a novel interpretation of the whole passage from these three points of view. Our guideline is considering Plato's writings seriously, not as some playful work. This simple rule is indeed surprisingly constraining, but it allows us to get a rare direct glance inside pre-Euclidean mathematics, in contradiction with the 'Main Standard Interpretation' prevailing in history of mathematics as well as in history of philosophy. This study had been divided in two parts for editorial reasons. In the present article, we propose an analysis of the first part of this 'mathematical part', Theodorus' lesson. In the second article (Brisson-Ofman (to appear)), we present the sequel of the lesson and a philosophical interpretation of the 'mathematical part' within the framework of the entire dialogue. Both articles form a whole. They are both aimed to an audience without any particular mathematical background, and require only elementary mathematical knowledge, essentially of high school-level. Some more delicate points are nevertheless developed in the Appendices.
Cosmocracy and Culture in Valerian Muraviev’s Works
Anastasia G. Gacheva
The article deals with the concept of culture as a cosmocracy, which is put forward in the works of Valerian Muraviev, one of the leading representatives of the 1920s cosmism. It presents the evolution of Muraviev’s view on the phenomenon of culture from the early articles to the philosophical mysteries “Sophia and the Centaur” and “The Culture of the Future.” The connection of Muraviev’s constructions with the projective philosophy of Nikolay Fedorov, the ancestor of cosmism, with the idea of the antientropical essence of culture, which is characteristic of the representatives of cosmism, is shown.
Role Stress and Turnover Intention of Front-Line Hotel Employees: The Roles of Burnout and Service Climate
Biyan Wen, Xiaoman Zhou, Yaou Hu
et al.
High turnover rate represents one of the most significant challenges the hotel industry faces. High turnover rates mean labor shortages, resulting in high costs of recruiting, staffing and training. Turnover also has a negative impact on service quality. Scholars continue to search for the root causes of turnover and propose solutions. To further understand employees’ turnover intention, this study reveals the role of stress on hotel front-line employees’ turnover intention through the mediation of burnout. Moreover, the study examines the moderating effect of service climate on the underlying mechanism that links role stress with turnover intention. Using a sample of 583 questionnaires from front-line hotel employees in South China, this study reveals that role stress as a four-dimensional construct (i.e., conflict, ambiguity, qualitative overload and quantitative overload) has a statistically significant impact on burnout, which leads to turnover intention. Burnout completely mediates the relationship between role stress and turnover intention, that is, employees under role stress do not resign immediately unless they experience high levels of burnout. In addition, service climate moderates the influence of role stress on burnout, suggesting a moderated mediation relationship. The study contributes to the organizational management literature by confirming the four dimensions of role stress and demonstrating how role stress impacts employees’ turnover intention. Furthermore, the critical effect of service climate is further investigated. Theoretical contributions and managerial implications are discussed based on the findings. the study also investigates the moderating effect of service climate on role stress (challenge-hindrance stressors) and burnout.
Omissions in verbal sentences ( as in Sahih Bukhari )(ظاهرة الحذف في الجملة الفعلية (دراسة نحوية دلالية في صحيح البخاري
Memoona Aman, Dr.Faizan Ur Rahman
"Arabic language is one of the most developed languages of the world. It has a number of grammatical phenomenon, Omissions is one of them. Omission of any part of a sentence creates ambiguity to fully understand its meanings.
Due to this phenomenon Arabic has a specific cause when viewed in the light of Semantic analysis. This study deals with the phenomenon of dropping or omission of the part of a speech. In article under review, I have explained as to how an omission becomes requirement of the text to reflect a particular meaning. I have chosen semantic study of three basic parts of verbal sentence that is Verb, Subject and Object to unveil this phenomenon in Sahih Al Bukhari. This clearly explains the significance of omission of words in the sayings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
