Balıklı: On the Edge of Time and Everything

Güneş Duru

This paper examines the findings from recent excavations at Balıklı, a lesser-known Neolithic settlement located on the Central Anatolian Plateau, with the aim of questioning established models of Neolithization in the region. In contrast to long-term and architecturally stable settlements like Aşıklı Höyük, Balıklı represents a shorter-term and more flexible occupation. This contrast reflected in differences in architecture, duration of occupation, and modes of subsistence, suggests that Neolithization in Central Anatolia did not follow a singular, linear trajectory but instead involved multiple strategies, timings, and social organizations. The study contributes to a reassessment of the geographic and cultural diversity of the Neolithization process in Central Anatolia.

Addressing and Redressing History in Simone Leigh’s Sculptures

Myrto Charvalia

In her multifaceted work, Simone Leigh (b. 1967, Chicago) explores the history of the African diaspora, examining topics such as the elusive legacy of enslavement, the indelible effects of colonialism and the forced migration of Black people. In this article, I focus primarily on her ceramic and bronze work which I read as a reimagined genealogy of Black subjectivity. In regards to her approach, Leigh addresses history and exposes quotidian, therefore banalized, “scenes of subjection,” to echo Saidiya Hartman’s eponymous book. After delving into the controversy surrounding her main medium of expression, ceramics, I emphasize in this article the use of the archive both as a source of inspiration and a way to redress history. I also provide an analysis of her installation Last Garment (2022) as a therapeutic showcase or a “critical fabulation.”

Podobe starosti v slikarstvu Ivane Kobilca

Subtitling Arabic dialogues in Netflix’s The Crown into English: treatment of cultural challenges

Linda S. Al-Abbas

This study examined the translation strategies used in subtitling Arabic dialogues in Netflix’s The Crown into English with specific reference to idioms, slang expressions, and offensive language and taboos. The data, which included Arabic examples of the specified categories along with their English subtitles, were collected and qualitatively analyzed according to different typologies of equivalence proposed by previous studies, including those by Vinay and Darbelnet (2004), Baker (1992) and Díaz Cintas and Remael (2021). The findings revealed that in translating idioms, paraphrasing was the most utilized strategy that successfully delivered the literal meaning but fell short of capturing the negative connotations of the expressions. For slang expressions, the subtitler opted for omission and using equivalents with less expressive meanings. When translating offensive language and taboos, the expressions were either softened or omitted to minimize their negative impact on the audience, especially those concerning British royalty. Expressions related to non-royals, however, were translated literally. This study can help subtitlers and translation students enhance their skills in rendering culture-specific expressions, including idiomatic, slang, and offensive expressions. It is recommended that translators strike a balance between adapting expressions to resonate with the target audience while maintaining the authenticity of the original dialogue.

An Analytical Study of Assimilation in English Reading Texts

Mohammed Alasadi

Abstract This study is concerned with analysing of assimilation as an English co-articulated phenomenon in a selected reading course assigned for Iraqi students in order to enhance the Iraqi ESL learners understanding of variety of English reading skills as well as phonology which is one of the bases of effective and successful reading. The aim of this paper is to help students overcome their problems through reading, listening and fluently pronouncing assimilated words in connected speech of English utterances for successful interaction and minimizing the Iraqi ESL students’ foreign accent. The collected data are the soundtracks of 14 reading passages taken from “Intermediate-Select Readings” /Second Edition by Linda Lee & Erik Gundersen as a second year reading textbook at the College of Languages / University of Kufa. The study analysed the data under scrutiny and found that the reciprocal assimilation is not as it is defined as adjacent sounds having mutual influence on each other to produce a third new fused sound, some features are copied just by one of them. It was also revealed that germination mostly occurs in complete assimilation when consonants in sequence are homorganic (the consonants have two features in common, manner of articulation and phonation). Since manner of articulation feature is existed in both sounds, the third place of articulation feature is copied automatically from the adjacent sound. Keywords: Assimilation, Germination, Voicing, Place, Manner, Regressive, Progressive

Corvi, Alberto

Three interesting drawings by the sculptor Pompeo Marchesi (1783‑1858), which are kept at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, have been recently discovered within the framework of a comprehensive investigation of the artist’s graphic production. In these sheets the sculptor sketched out the first ideas for the colossal monument to Cesare Beccaria located on the grand staircase of the Brera Palace in 1837. The discovery of these sketches made it possible to retrace the development of the statue’s design pointing out Marchesi’s allusions to and influences on ancient statuary as well as the art of Canova and Thorvaldsen.

Diversifying the genomic data science research community

The Genomic Observatories Network, Rosa M Alcazar, Maria Alvarez et al.

Over the past 20 years, the explosion of genomic data collection and the cloud computing revolution have made computational and data science research accessible to anyone with a web browser and an internet connection. However, students at institutions with limited resources have received relatively little exposure to curricula or professional development opportunities that lead to careers in genomic data science. To broaden participation in genomics research, the scientific community needs to support these programs in local education and research at underserved institutions (UIs). These include community colleges, historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, and tribal colleges and universities that support ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically underrepresented students in the United States. We have formed the Genomic Data Science Community Network to support students, faculty, and their networks to identify opportunities and broaden access to genomic data science. These opportunities include expanding access to infrastructure and data, providing UI faculty development opportunities, strengthening collaborations among faculty, recognizing UI teaching and research excellence, fostering student awareness, developing modular and open-source resources, expanding course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), building curriculum, supporting student professional development and research, and removing financial barriers through funding programs and collaborator support.

Engaging Patients in Smoking Cessation Treatment within the Lung Cancer Screening Setting: Lessons Learned from an NCI SCALE Trial

Randi M. Williams, Ellie Eyestone, Laney Smith et al.

Offering smoking cessation treatment at lung cancer screening (LCS) will maximize mortality reduction associated with screening, but predictors of treatment engagement are not well understood. We examined participant characteristics of engagement in an NCI SCALE cessation trial. Eligible LCS patients (N = 818) were randomized to the Intensive arm (8 phone counseling sessions +8 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)) vs. Minimal arm (3 sessions + 2 weeks of NRT). Engagement was measured by number of sessions completed (none, some, or all) and NRT mailed (none vs. any) in each arm. In the Intensive arm, those with ≥some college (OR = 2.1, 95% CI = 1.1, 4.0) and undergoing an annual scan (OR = 2.1, 95% CI = 1.1, 4.2) engaged in some counseling vs. none. Individuals with higher nicotine dependence were more likely (OR = 2.8, 95% CI = 1.3, 6.2) to request NRT. In the Minimal arm, those with higher education (OR = 2.1, 95% CI = 1.1, 3.9) and undergoing an annual scan (OR = 2.0, 95% CI = 1.04, 3.8) completed some sessions vs. none. Requesting NRT was associated with more pack-years (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 1.1, 3.5). Regardless of treatment intensity, additional strategies are needed to engage those with lower education, less intensive smoking histories, and undergoing a first scan. These efforts will be important given the broader 2021 LCS guidelines.

Lack of Association between Inhaled Corticosteroid Use and the Risk of Future Exacerbation in Patients with GOLD Group A Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

S. Shin, D. Kim, Sang-Heon Kim et al.

Background: As most clinical trials have been performed in more symptomatic and higher-risk patients, evidence regarding treatment in patients with Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) group A chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is limited. We assessed the distribution of inhaler treatment and sought to investigate the association between inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use and future exacerbation in GOLD group A COPD patients. Methods: Patients with GOLD group A COPD who received maintenance inhalers were identified from a multicentre, prospective cohort in South Korea. Patients were categorized as group A when they had fewer symptoms and did not experience severe exacerbation in the previous year. Development of moderate or severe exacerbation during the 1-year follow-up was analysed according to baseline inhaler treatment. Results: In 286 patients with GOLD group A COPD, mono-bronchodilator (37.8%), dual-bronchodilator (29.0%), triple therapy (17.5%), and ICS/long-acting beta-2 agonist (15.4%) were used. Compared to patients without ICS-containing inhalers (N = 191), those using ICS (N = 95) were more dyspnoeic, and more likely to have asthma history, lower lung function, and bronchodilator response. During the 1-year follow-up, moderate or severe exacerbations occurred in 66 of 286 (23.1%) patients. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, ICS-containing inhaler use was not associated with the development of exacerbation, even in the subgroup with a high probability of asthma–COPD overlap. Conclusion: Although about one-third of patients with GOLD group A COPD were using ICS-containing inhalers, use of ICS was not associated with a reduction in the future development of exacerbation.

Euclid preparation. XXVII. Covariance model validation for the 2-point correlation function of galaxy clusters

E. Fumagalli, A. Saro, S. Borgani et al.

Aims. We validate a semi-analytical model for the covariance of real-space 2-point correlation function of galaxy clusters. Methods. Using 1000 PINOCCHIO light cones mimicking the expected Euclid sample of galaxy clusters, we calibrate a simple model to accurately describe the clustering covariance. Then, we use such a model to quantify the likelihood analysis response to variations of the covariance, and investigate the impact of a cosmology-dependent matrix at the level of statistics expected for the Euclid survey of galaxy clusters. Results. We find that a Gaussian model with Poissonian shot-noise does not correctly predict the covariance of the 2-point correlation function of galaxy clusters. By introducing few additional parameters fitted from simulations, the proposed model reproduces the numerical covariance with 10 per cent accuracy, with differences of about 5 per cent on the figure of merit of the cosmological parameters $\Omega_{\rm m}$ and $\sigma_8$. Also, we find that the cosmology-dependence of the covariance adds valuable information that is not contained in the mean value, significantly improving the constraining power of cluster clustering. Finally, we find that the cosmological figure of merit can be further improved by taking mass binning into account. Our results have significant implications for the derivation of cosmological constraints from the 2-point clustering statistics of the Euclid survey of galaxy clusters.

Headache service quality evaluation: implementation of quality indicators in primary care in Europe

B. Lenz, Z. Katsarava, R. Gil-Gouveia et al.

Background Lifting The Burden (LTB) and European Headache Federation (EHF) have developed a set of headache service quality indicators, successfully tested in specialist headache centres. Their intended application includes all levels of care. Here we assess their implementation in primary care. Methods We included 28 primary-care clinics in Germany (4), Turkey (4), Latvia (5) and Portugal (15). To implement the indicators, we interviewed 111 doctors, 92 nurses and medical assistants, 70 secretaries, 27 service managers and 493 patients, using the questionnaires developed by LTB and EHF. In addition, we evaluated 675 patients’ records. Enquiries were in nine domains: diagnosis, individualized management, referral pathways, patient education and reassurance, convenience and comfort, patient satisfaction, equity and efficiency of headache care, outcome assessment and safety. Results The principal finding was that Implementation proved feasible and practical in primary care. In the process, we identified significant quality deficits. Almost everywhere, histories of headache, especially temporal profiles, were captured and/or assessed inaccurately. A substantial proportion (20%) of patients received non-specific ICD codes such as R51 (“headache”) rather than specific headache diagnoses. Headache-related disability and quality of life were not part of routine clinical enquiry. Headache diaries and calendars were not in use. Waiting times were long (e.g., about 60 min in Germany). Nevertheless, most patients (> 85%) expressed satisfaction with their care. Almost all the participating clinics provided equitable and easy access to treatment, and follow-up for most headache patients, without unnecessary barriers. Conclusions The study demonstrated that headache service quality indicators can be used in primary care, proving both practical and fit for purpose. It also uncovered quality deficits leading to suboptimal treatment, often due to a lack of knowledge among the general practitioners. There were failures of process also. These findings signal the need for additional training in headache diagnosis and management in primary care, where most headache patients are necessarily treated. More generally, they underline the importance of headache service quality evaluation in primary care, not only to identify-quality failings but also to guide improvements. This study also demonstrated that patients’ satisfaction is not, on its own, a good indicator of service quality.

Interpersonal violence and other social-structural barriers associated with needing HIV treatment support for women living with HIV

M. Erickson, K. Shannon, Flo Ranville et al.

Women living with HIV (WLWH), experience disproportionate rates of violence, along with suboptimal HIV health outcomes, despite recent advancements in HIV treatment, known as antiretroviral therapy (ART). The objectives of this study were to: (a) describe different types of support needed to take ART and (b) investigate the social and structural correlates associated with needing support for ART adherence among WLWH. Data are drawn from Sexual health and HIV/AIDS: Women’s Longitudinal Needs Assessment, a community-based open research cohort with cisgender and transgender WLWH, aged 14+ who live or access HIV services in Metro Vancouver, Canada (2014–present). Baseline and semi-annual questionnaires are administered by community interviewers alongside a clinical visit with a sexual health research nurse. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression using generalized estimating equations and an exchangeable working correlation matrix was used to model factors associated with needing supports for ART adherence. Among 276 WLWH, 51% (n = 142) reported needing support for ART adherence; 95% of participants reported lifetime gender-based violence and identified many interpersonal, structural, community, and clinical supports that would facilitate and support ART adherence. In multivariable logistic regression, participants who were Indigenous (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.70, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.07–2.72), or otherwise racialized (AOR: 2.36, 95% CI : 1.09–5.12) versus white, experienced recent gender-based physical violence (AOR : 1.54, 95% CI : 1.03–2.31), lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (AOR : 1.97, 95% CI : 1.22–3.18), and recent illicit drug use (AOR : 2.15, 95% CI : 1.43–3.22), had increased odds of needing support for ART adherence. This research suggests a need for trauma-informed, culturally safe and culturally responsive practice and services for WLWH along the HIV care continuum to support ART adherence. All services should be developed by, with, and for WLWH and tailored according to gender identity, taking into account history, culture, and trauma, including the negative impacts of settler colonialism for Indigenous people.

Adherence to the ABC (Atrial fibrillation Better Care) Pathway in the Balkan region: the BALKAN-AF Survey.

M. Kozieł, S. Simovic, N. Pavlović et al.

INTRODUCTION The Atrial fibrillation Better Care (ABC) pathway provides a useful way of simplifying decision-making considerations in a holistic approach to atrial fibrillation management. OBJECTIVES To evaluate adherence to ABC pathway and to determine major gaps in adherence to ABC pathway in patients in BALKAN-AF survey. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this ancillary analysis, patients in BALKAN-AF survey were divided into groups: "A (Avoid stroke)+B (Better symptom control)+C (Cardiovascular and comorbidity risk management)"-adherent and non-adherent "A+B+C" management.  Results: Of 2,712 enrolled patients, 1,013 (43.8%) patients with mean (SD) age of 68.8 (10.2) years and mean CHA2DS2-VASc score of 3.4 (1.8) had "A+B+C"-adherent management and 1,299 (56.2%) had non-adherent-"A+B+C" management. Independent predictors of increased "A+B+C"-adherent management were: capital city [odds ratio (OR) 1.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.46, p = 0.02], treatment by cardiologist (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.08-1.66, p = 0.01), hypertension (OR 2.20, 95% CI 1.74-2.77, p <0.001), diabetes mellitus (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.05-1.57, p = 0.01) and multimorbidity (the presence of two or more long-term conditions) (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.43-2.38, p <0.001). Independent predictors of decreased "A+B+C"-adherent management were: age ≥80 years (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.48-0.76, p < 0.001) and history of bleeding (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.33-0.75, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Physicians' adherence to integrated AF management based on the ABC pathway was suboptimal in our study. Addressing the identified clinical  and system-related factors associated with non-adherent-"A+B+C" management using targeted approaches is needed to optimize treatment of AF patients in the Balkan region.

Parameter study for the burst mode of accretion in massive star formation

D. Meyer, E. Vorobyov, V. Elbakyan et al.

It is now a widely held view that, in their formation and early evolution, stars build up mass in bursts. The burst mode of star formation scenario proposes that the stars grow in mass via episodic accretion of fragments migrating from their gravitationally-unstable circumstellar discs and it naturally explains the existence of observed pre-main-sequence bursts from high mass protostars. We present a parameter study of hydrodynamical models of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) that explores the initial masses of the collapsing clouds (Mc = 60-200Mo) and ratio of rotational-to-gravitational energies (beta = 0:005-0:33). An increase in Mc and/or beta produces protostellar accretion discs that are more prone to develop gravitational instability and to experience bursts. We find that all MYSOs have bursts even if their pre-stellar core is such that beta 1 scale as a power-law with the stellar mass. Our results confirm that massive protostars accrete about 40-60% of their mass in the burst mode. The distribution of time periods between two consecutive bursts is bimodal: there is a short duration (~ 1-10 yr) peak corresponding to the short, faintest bursts and a long duration peak (at ~ 10^3-10^4 yr) corresponding to the long, FU-Orionis-type bursts appearing in later disc evolution, i.e., around 30 kyr after disc formation. We discuss this bimodality in the context of the structure of massive protostellar jets as potential signatures of accretion burst history.

Clocking the assembly of double-barred galaxies with the MUSE TIMER project

A. D. Lorenzo-C'aceres, P. S'anchez-Bl'azquez, J. M'endez-Abreu et al.

The formation of two stellar bars within a galaxy has proved challenging for numerical studies. It is not yet clear whether the inner bar is born via a star formation process promoted by gas inflow along the outer bar or whether it is dynamically assembled from instabilities in a small-scale stellar disc. Observational constraints to these scenarios are scarce. We present a thorough study of the stellar content of two double-barred galaxies observed by the MUSE TIMER project, NGC 1291 and NGC 5850, combined with a two-dimensional multicomponent photometric decomposition performed on the 3.6 μμm images from S^4G. Our analysis confirms the presence of σ-hollows appearing in the stellar velocity dispersion distribution at the ends of the inner bars. Both galaxies host inner discs matching in size with the inner bars, suggestive of a dynamical formation for the inner bars from small-scale discs. The analysis of the star formation histories for the structural components shaping the galaxies provides constraints on the epoch of dynamical assembly of the inner bars, which took place >6.5 Gyr ago for NGC 1291 and >4.5 Gyr ago for NGC 5850. This implies that inner bars are long-lived structures.

Full inversion of solar relativistic electron events measured by the Helios spacecraft

D. Pacheco, N. Agueda, A. Aran et al.

Context. The Parker Solar Probe and the incoming Solar Orbiter mission will provide measurements of solar energetic particle (SEP) events at close heliocentric distances from the Sun. Up to present, the largest data set of SEP events in the inner heliosphere are the observations by the two Helios spacecraft. Aims. We re-visit a sample of 15 solar relativistic electron events measured by the Helios mission with the goal of better characterising the injection histories of solar energetic particles and their interplanetary transport conditions at heliocentric distances 30 min) injections. The values of mean free path range from 0.02 AU to 0.27 AU. Conclusions. The inferred injection histories match with the radio and soft X-ray emissions found in literature. We find no dependence of the radial mean free path on the radial distance. In addition, we find no apparent relation between the strength of interplanetary scattering and the size of the solar particle release.

Nuno Crespo
