“An Icelandic Driver”: J. Magnús Bjarnason’s Story as a History of Immigrant Hierarchy, Erasure, and Antisemitism in Nineteenth-Century Halifax: A Translation

Jay L. Lalonde

“An Icelandic Driver” is the first English translation of the short story (or novella) “Íslenzkur ökumaður” by the Icelandic-Canadian writer Jóhann Magnús Bjarnason. The story, first published in 1910, offers a unique point of view on turn-of-the-century Halifax, Nova Scotia. While most texts by Icelandic immigrant authors narrowly focus on the experience of their compatriots in isolated rural settlements, this story provides a much richer and more complex portrayal of urban—rather than rural—life. It is inhabited by various immigrants, foreigners, and outsiders, who shape the protagonist’s understanding of his new home. While this portrayal allows for a much more nuanced view, it also reveals a rigid immigrant hierarchy, xenophobia, and antisemitism—all omnipresent and to a large extent internalized by the protagonist.

Christian Adam

There was no 'zero hour' (Stunde Null) in German literature, though nazification and denazification had serious impact on the book market. The paper shows this by looking at bestselling books in East and West Germany before and after 1945. Entertaining books and factual novels were among the most successful books in the Third Reich. Freed of their political time reference, many of the texts from the Nazi era lived on after the end of the war. Both genres consequently left a long-term mark on the book market. Some authors like Karl Aloys Schenzinger were close to the National Socialist Party, others like Ehm Welk were critical to the regime.

Krafta i «Det grønne amt»

Hilde Gunn Slottemo

“Tell Ye Your Children…”: The Twisted Swedish Road to Holocaust Recognition

Klas-Göran Karlsson

ABSTRACT: From a historical perspective, this article analyzes the dramatic political process in the 1990s when modern Sweden left its traditional dissociation from historical orientations by entering into a European context in which the Second World War and the Holocaust were crucial historical landmarks. The political campaign Living History must be understood in terms of recent processes of both nationalization and Europeanization of history. As a conclusion, three problems of the politics of history are discussed: a competing European historical focus on communist crimes against humanity, a simplistic and reductionist political use of Holocaust history, and a difficult but necessary discussion of the potential lessons of history in general, and of Holocaust history in particular.

In this article the concept of negotiation of identities is explored and its functioning is demonstrated on an excerpt from Niemi's Mannen som dog som en lax (2006). Negotiation of identities is grounded on the notions of discursive construction of identities utilizing the dialogic scheme of the positioning theory (Davies & Harré), and of identity as embedded in social context and societal sites of power. Identity is then not only understood as a certain position resulting from the interplay between various processes of positioning based on imagining and narration, but also, as a position that is inevitably subjected to and involved in generating, exchange and reproduction of capital and power (Bourdieu). The notion of negotiation of identities is in this article illustrated by an example from Niemi's novel that can be perceived as a discursive space for legitimation and empowering of the disadvantaged identity options of multilingual individuals in Swedish Tornedalen.

Grenzenlose Visionen. Die Fehmarnbeltregion im Transitkorridor Hamburg-Kopenhagen

Dirk Keil, Karl Löfgren

The authors analyse regional integration in Europe in the case of the emerging Femern Belt Region, which is mainly based on the building of a permanent traffic link crossing the Femern Belt. Beyond that, there are only few further common denominators. Therefore the project of region building appears as a rather difficult one. To achieve coherence within a new emerging cross-border region appears a challenge to the re-gions actors. This paper asks how these actors operate and interact across borders with the context given. It takes its point of departure in theories on network governance and new regionalism. Empirically, this paper focuses on a group of decision-makers within the field of local and regional administrations, which are actively involved in cross-border cooperation. Methodologically, the paper is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with eleven actors in the Femern Belt Region.

Better than Europe - Eurosceptical self-descriptions in Norway and Switzerland

Jochen Hille

In Norway and Switzerland the majority of the people rejected EU-integration in several referenda. The emotionality and the enormous mobilization that took place in the debates on integration cannot be sufficiently explained by economic and political reasons. Instead, the main resource aiding this eurosceptic mobilisation for lies more inreactivating deeply rooted descriptions of the national self and those of the ‘others’. Carving out these collective images, this paper compares how the major eurosceptical actors of Switzerland and Norway describe their actions as meaningful in their iconography and narrations. Eurosceptics perceive themselves mainly as defenders of the national community and its nation-state, which are regarded as warm, natural, close, just, efficient, peaceful and democratic, while an integrated Europe is perceived as a distant, cold and bureaucratic super-state EU.
