Monodromy Representations of Mixed Braid Groups

Chitrabhanu Chaudhuri, Saswati Mukherjee

We explicitly describe unitary representations of mixed braid groups on the cohomology of Abelian branched covers of $\mathbf{CP}^1$ . We show that the image of the representation is generated by complex reflections and relate it to the multivariate Burau representation.

Unitary and Nonunitary Representations of the Heisenberg-Weyl Lie Algebra

Andrew Douglas, Hubert de Guise, Joe Repka

We examine unitary and nonunitary representations of the Heisenberg-Weyl Lie algebra $\mathfrak{hw}_n$, with particular emphasis on tensor products of unitary representations and on indecomposable nonunitary representations. In the unitary setting, the irreducible representations with nontrivial central character are the Schrödinger representations, as classified by the Stone-von Neumann theorem. Although tensor products of these representations are considered in the literature, we give a detailed Lie-algebraic analysis and construct explicit unitary intertwining operators, including the case where the central characters sum to zero. In the nonunitary setting, we consider a natural realization of $\mathfrak{hw}_n$ as a subalgebra of the real symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n+2}(\mathbb R)$ and prove that every finite-dimensional complex irreducible representation of $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n+2}(\mathbb{R})$ remains indecomposable upon restriction to $\mathfrak{hw}_n$. This yields a large natural family of finite-dimensional, nonunitary indecomposable representations of $\mathfrak{hw}_n$.

An introduction to representations of p-adic groups

Jessica Fintzen

An explicit understanding of the (category of all smooth, complex) representations of p-adic groups provides an important tool not just within representation theory. It also has applications to number theory and other areas, and, in particular, it enables progress on various different forms of the Langlands program. In this write-up of the author's ECM 2024 colloquium-style talk, we will introduce p-adic groups and explain how the category of representations of p-adic groups decomposes into subcategories, called Bernstein blocks. We also provide an overview of what we know about the structure of these Bernstein blocks including a sketch of recent results of the author with Adler, Mishra and Ohara that allow to reduce a lot of problems about the (category of) representations of p-adic groups to problems about representations of finite groups of Lie type, where answers are often already known or are at least easier to achieve. Moreover, we provide an overview of what is known about the construction of supercuspidal representations, which are the building blocks of all smooth representations and whose construction is also the key to obtain the above results about the structure of the whole category of smooth representations. We will, in particular, focus on recent advances which include the work of the author mentioned in the EMS prize citation as well as a hint towards her recent joint work with David Schwein.

Kronecker coefficients and Harrison centres of the representation ring of the symmetric group

Jia-Cheng Sun, Chi Zhang, Haoran Zhu

We present a computational approach to studying the structure of the representation ring of the symmetric group in dimension six. The Kronecker coefficients and all power formulae of irreducible representations of $S_6$ are computed using the character theory of finite groups. In addition, considering direct sum decomposition of tensor products of different irreducible representations of $S_6$, we characterise generators of the representation ring $\mathcal{R}(S_6)$, show that its unit group $U(\mathcal{R}(S_6))$ is a Klein four-group, and related results on the structure of primitive idempotents. Furthermore, we introduce the Harrison centre theory to study the representation ring and show that the Harrison centre of the cubic form induced by the generating relations of $\mathcal{R}(S_6)$ is isomorphic to itself. Finally, we conclude with some open problems for future consideration.

Tropical representations and valuated matroids

Jaiung Jun, Kalina Mincheva, Jeffrey Tolliver

We explore several facets of tropical subrepresentations of a linear representation of a group over the tropical semifield $\mathbb{T}$. A key role in the study of tropical subrepresentations is played by two types of modules over a semiring: weakly free and quasi-free modules. We also investigate subgroups of $\text{GL}_n(K)$ for $K=\mathbb{T}$, $ \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, and automorphisms of weakly free modules and tropical prevarieties defined by tropical linear equations. As an application of our results, we provide an intrinsic description of tropical subrepresentation via certain quasi-free modules, and prove that a tropical subrepresentation is equivalent to a valuated matroidal representation.

Moduli of representations of one-point extensions

Arif Dönmez, Markus Reineke

We study moduli spaces of (semi-)stable representations of one-point extensions of quivers by rigid representations. This class of moduli spaces unifies Grassmannians of subrepresentations of rigid representations and moduli spaces of representations of generalized Kronecker quivers. With homological methods, we find numerical criteria for non-emptiness and results on basic geometric properties, construct generating semi-invariants, expand the Gel'fand MacPherson correspondence, and derive a formula for the Poincare polynomial in singular cohomology of these moduli spaces.

The Bicha Louca (Crazy Fag) Character and the Construction of a Network of Actorial Work in Brazil during the Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985)

Alberto Ferreira da Rocha Junior

The article proposes the existence of an actorial network that created a character-type of the male homosexual, which could be called the bicha louca (crazy fag). Actors such as Nestor Montemar, Raul Cortez, Ítalo Rossi and Emiliano Queiroz participated in this network, contributing to the theatre being a space of visibility for the LGBT population and of resistance to the moral and political repression in the period of the Brazilian civil military dictatorship (1964-1985).

Joiking life narratives. The performance of indigenous self-perception in Sami life stories

Nicola Renzi

The Sami are the only indigenous population formally recognized in the EU, nevertheless, this significant acknowledgment came only in relatively recent times, after centuries of forced assimilation policies and thanks to crucial fights for self-determination and identity recognition. This article intends to offer an analysis of two cases of Sami life narratives orally transmitted as joiks, musical expressions traditionally sung a cappella and characterized by a highly descriptive value. The focus is to present, through a set of transdisciplinary approaches, intimate and social perceptions of indigeneity and the related narrative outcomes which may take place in the peculiar empathic relationship established between the narrator-performer and the audience. Lawra Somby’s Im manne gåarkah and Niiles-Jouni Aikio’s Ieš joiks will respectively direct the study through 1) the author’s individual life experience and perception of the colonial assimilation and the consequent language loss and 2) a rare case of self-joiking, an acoustic self-portrait or musical autobiography which through both verbal and musical components aims at the narration and interpretation of a Sami’s own life experience.

The Digital Sublime and Fragility in the Time of COVID-19 and the Eco-crisis: The Dynamics of Becoming

Hanna Helavuori

The narrative of self-control and self-governance was unexpectedly shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic. Face-to-face encounters were minimized and social distancing was encouraged to avoid spreading the disease. The Finnish mainstream theatre machine began calculating economic losses with neoliberal logic. Self-employed artists, on the other hand, created “digital public spaces” negotiating new forms of digital presence and interaction rituals. This article explores the embodied experience of COVID-19 and how this new materiality can impact forms of performative and political sensibility. COVID-19 and social distancing are material-bodily processes which also have broader cultural, political, and theoretical consequences. These themes will be evaluated using a posthumanist feminist and new materialist theoretical framework.

Fiction and Reality in the Theater, based on the Ideas of Vilém Flusser

Ernesto Gomes Valença

The article discusses the relationship of tension between fiction and reality in contemporary theater, based on the concept of performative theater and in relation to the philosophy of Vilém Flusser, using examples of recent staging and based on the analysis of renowned researchers. The notions of fiction, reality, intellect, and conversation in Flusser's philosophy are mobilized to suggest that contemporary theater is a kind of differential performative intellect, configuring not a representation but an expansion of reality itself.

Kontynuacje i migawki: Wspomnienia o Lechu Raczaku (1946-2020)

Jana Pilátová, Pavel Štourač, Biljana Golubovič et al.

Lech Raczak (1946–2020) is remembered by Jana Pilátová, professor at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU), and his students. A well-known theatre director, theatre scholar, playwright, and lecturer, for them Raczak was primarily a teacher and a friend. Pilátová remembers the Prague visit of Teatr Ósmego Dnia (The Eighth Day Theatre), under his leadership, not only as an important artistic event, but also as a lesson in organisation and economics. Having collaborated with Raczak for decades, she found meetings with him inspirational, and she also saw how contacts with him opened others to new creative and personal opportunities. Today, the authors of the reminiscences are active in his areas of interest, continuing his work. Pavel Štourač has founded a theatre group: the Continuo Theatre. Biljana Golubovič has researched Balkan rituals and offers art therapy in crise. Martin Frys has overcome his physical limitations and works as a therapist, carrying out his own program for approaching oneself and the theatre. All texts show Lech Raczak as a creative artist and expert educator, but above all as an empathetic person.

Almost representations of algebras and quantization

Louis Ioos, David Kazhdan, Leonid Polterovich

We introduce the notion of almost representations of Lie algebras and quantum tori, and establish an Ulam-stability type phenomenon: every irreducible almost representation is close to a genuine irreducible representation. As an application, we prove that geometric quantizations of the two-dimensional sphere and the two-dimensional torus are conjugate in the semi-classical limit up to a small error.

Hitachi at MRP 2019: Unified Encoder-to-Biaffine Network for Cross-Framework Meaning Representation Parsing

Yuta Koreeda, Gaku Morio, Terufumi Morishita et al.

This paper describes the proposed system of the Hitachi team for the Cross-Framework Meaning Representation Parsing (MRP 2019) shared task. In this shared task, the participating systems were asked to predict nodes, edges and their attributes for five frameworks, each with different order of "abstraction" from input tokens. We proposed a unified encoder-to-biaffine network for all five frameworks, which effectively incorporates a shared encoder to extract rich input features, decoder networks to generate anchorless nodes in UCCA and AMR, and biaffine networks to predict edges. Our system was ranked fifth with the macro-averaged MRP F1 score of 0.7604, and outperformed the baseline unified transition-based MRP. Furthermore, post-evaluation experiments showed that we can boost the performance of the proposed system by incorporating multi-task learning, whereas the baseline could not. These imply efficacy of incorporating the biaffine network to the shared architecture for MRP and that learning heterogeneous meaning representations at once can boost the system performance.
