The train is a mode of mass transportation that is fast, efficient, and relatively affordable. To support the high demand for this mode of transportation, adequate infrastructure is also needed. The condition of this infrastructure must always be monitored so that the level of security and safety of rail transportation modes can always be in optimal conditions. One important component that requires regular attention and maintenance is the railway sleepers. In this paper, a finite element (FE) model was made of railway sleepers using ANSYS software. From the analysis on the FE model, it can be explored that the deformation and stress that occurs in the railway due to loading. In this study, vibration tests were also carried out on railway based on several types of passing trains. It aims to determine the frequency value based on the type of passing train. This research is the initial stage of a series of studies on structural health monitoring procedures on railroads.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Central Eastern European cities (CEEc) integrated the globalised networks characterised by hierarchical interactions between cities. This article aims at revisiting the core-periphery and spatial diffusion of innovations paradigms among CEEc within multi-level interurban transnational company networks regardless of CEEc size in 2013. This article contributes to confirm that in spite of presenting less complex economic functions than the large urban centres, medium-sized and small cities, still involved in relations from the communist past, are bottom-up drivers of future innovations. These cities should be targeted by regional policies to reach the polycentric model of urban systems promoted by the European Union.

The need to “renew” the historical building heritage and, therefore, the possibility of introducing innovative technologies and components capable of ensuring its optimal performance pose the difficult question of assessing whether technological intervention for sustainable performance adaptability should be considered a “threat,” while acknowledging that it efficiently helps to safeguard an existing historical building in the long-term and to preserve its cultural value over time. This article presents the case study for the diagnostics, evaluation and maintenance of the Church of S. Giovanni Battista in Florence, designed by G. Michelucci after the catastrophic event of 2015 that partly destroyed its roof.

The production of the detailed design in the public works has been updated several times, even recently through the adoption of the new Public Procurement Law. Two different approaches are still remaining: the centralization of the design activity in charge of the public contracting body or the externalization to private actors. The paper, beyond an investigation of the potentialities and criticalities of these approaches, outlines new scenarios that are progressively taking place. In particular, starting from the emblematic case of the student housing buildings launched in Italy with the law 338/2000, new possible prospects, new contents and models of production of the detailed design are identified.

Settled on the opening mouth of an estuary at the foothills of a mountain, the placement of the city of Hobart takes form in response to the rhythm of the earth’s crust. The multitudes of life forms, accumulations of matter and vital forces harden, fold, become buried, get pushed to the surface and become engaged in new entanglements. The milieu of Hobart, Tasmania, is developed from the foundations of a deeper, older space, the earth, which has a continual presence, a material, physical hum in the background.

The renewed interest for under used sites of historical city centres is addressing a change in design paradigms on existing buildings involving local communities in the process from the very beginning. The paper reports a recent cooperation, named “Anteprima Lab”, between the Department of Architecture (DA) of University of Bologna, the City of Bologna and Urban Center. The action is intended as an enabler of initiatives aimed at enhancing those places assumed as common goods by local communities. The pilot defined the functional and spatial features of an innovative participated environment that follows the socio-political trends characterizing the modern age of Bologna.
