Responsive Parenting and Friendship Quality in Adolescents: Interpersonal Communication Skills as a Mediator

Aaliya Hana Mahirah, Marselius Sampe Tondok

Existing knowledge indicates that responsive parenting significantly influences the quality of friendships among adolescents. However, previous research has not fully elucidated the dynamics within the relationship between responsive parenting and friendship quality. This study seeks to investigate the role of interpersonal communication skills as a mediator in relationships between responsive parenting and friendship quality. It involved 150 respondents aged 12-20 years (Mage = 16.87; SD = 2.51), comprising 50 early adolescents, 50 middle adolescents, and 50 late adolescents. Measurement of the three variables utilized scales: the Parental Responsiveness Scale subscale, the Interpersonal Communication Scale, and the McGill Friendship Questionnaires-Friend's Functions. Hypothesis testing using mediation analysis reveals that interpersonal communication skills mediate the relationship between father/mother's responsive parenting and friendship quality. These findings suggest that positive interactions between parents and adolescents through responsive parenting serve as models for adolescents in their peer relationships by enhancing interpersonal communication skills. The limitations and directions for further research are discussed.

Negative Air Ions (NAIs) as cognitive rehabilitation therapy for cerebral palsy patients

Ammara Rafique

Background: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that affects motor movement but can impair cognitive skills, muscle coordination, and many other functions. An environment rich in negative air ions (NAIs) is beneficial for improving alertness, anti-depressant effects, memory, productivity, psychological health, and well-being by inducing alkalinity in the body. Despite several findings, there are no evidence-based studies considering the use of NAIs for the rehabilitation of CP-inflicted patients. Objective: To evaluate the effects of NAIs on the cognitive functions of CP-inflicted patients. Methodology: This study was conducted from February 2021 to April 2021 at Al-Umeed Rehabilitation Association (AURA), Karachi, Pakistan after obtaining ethical approval. CP-inflicted participants who voluntarily participated in the study were randomly allocated to the control and intervention groups. Both groups continued their regular therapies, but the intervention group also received thirty-one structured sessions of a 40-minute exposure to 10000 NAIs/cm3 for 6 weeks. Five Lumosity games were selected to assess cognitive performance using paired t-tests. Results: NAIs significantly improved information processing (p<0.001), selective attention (p<0.01), spatial fluency (p<0.01), and spatial reasoning (p<0.01). This improvement in cognitive functions may be due to enhanced activity of the brain regions likely the cerebral cortex, prefrontal cortex, and parietal lobe as well as the neurotransmitter serotonin. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that NAIs can augment the cognitive functions of CP-inflicted patients. NAIs can benefit as a progressive, non-pharmacological, economical, and effective cognitive rehabilitation therapy for CP-inflicted patients after going through second and third-phase clinical trials.

Editorial: Prioritising Consistent Research Training in Counselling and Psychotherapy Courses

Jane Marsden

With one focus area of the draft national standards dedicated to counsellors and psychotherapists undertaking research, an article on the research preparation offered by 90 accredited Australian training courses aptly recommends clearer and more consistent guidelines (Beel & Purvis, 2024). Exposure to research methodology and production would ensure that graduates are equipped with a minimum standard of research literacy which is essential for evidence-informed practice, professional identity, and the credibility of the profession. Volume 12 (2) of the _Psychotherapy and Counselling Journal of Australia_ (PACJA) also includes two reviews on under-researched topics: a systematic literature review on the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on adult mental health (Al Barak, 2024) and a scoping review on the impacts of self-harm scars on psychosocial functioning, quality of life, and recovery in people with histories of self harm (Linington, 2024). Two Practice Reflections showcase evidence- and theory-informed practitioner wisdom; one outlining eight steps to softening corrosive self-criticism (Pearson & Wilson, 2024), the other on developing an autobiographical narrative with older clients to enhance ego integration (Roser, 2024). Two final articles highlight the variation of therapeutic practices available in Australia. Firstly, "Gudu-Guduwa: Healing Disconnection Through Incorporating Bush and Animal-Assisted Therapies Into Therapeutic Practice: A First Nations Reflection" (Stawiarski, 2024) explores Indigenous approaches to bush therapy and equine-assisted therapy as well as connection with ancestral Country and healing when connection to Country is severed. Secondly, an art-based autoethnography study used a mixed methods research design to measure improvements in an international tertiary student's distress (Lai & Andrews, 2024).

Influence of COVID-19 pandemic on social media addiction: Investigation among university students

Kuntay Arcan

The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible influence of COVID-19 pandemic related variables on social media addiction. The sample comprised 394 university students. Personal Information Form, COVID-19 Information Form, COVID-19 Pandemic Burden Form, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Brief Form, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and Coronavirus Anxiety Scale were utilized to gather online data of voluntary participants. It was observed that social media usage increased among the majority of the participants (74.6%) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, social media addiction scores of the participants were associated with longer social media usage, lower GPA, being young and female in addition to emotion regulation difficulties, pandemic burden, and COVID-19 anxiety. These findings revealed that several factors which were caused by COVID-19 related global health crisis posed risk for social media addiction symptoms. When the possibilities which include this health crisis may not quit in the short term and similar problems may repeat in the future were taken into consideration, it was concluded that deeper examination of the roles of pandemic related factors such as COVID-19 anxiety and burden for social media and other addictions, would be required.

Gender specificities of attitude towards disease in children and adolescents with chronic somatic disorders

Hanna V. Kukuruza, Olena O. Kyrylova

The article defines the specificities of attitude towards disease in children and adolescents, both male and female, with rheumatoid arthritis that is a chronic disorder. We have analysed the awareness of adolescents as for their disease, their openness towards perception of new information as well as their motivation for fighting the disease. We have studied psychological reactions of the adolescents in terms of the disease and defined types of attitudes towards it. We have found that girls are characterized by the highest level of anxiety due to their disease, although they are active in their fight with it, and the harmonious type of attitude was reliably registered more frequently. Boys expressed the highest level of guilt. They were characterized by a deliberate position as for their trust towards doctors. In their cases, ergopathic and sensitive types of attitude were most expressed.

Segregation and Analytical Discourse Lacan announces modern segregation as an ineluctable horizon linked to the emergence of the subject of science. This gloomy perspective is uttered, however, by carefully placing a position of analytical discourse against which it can make objection. The writing of the four discourses allows displaying this logic and crossing it with certain works of Foucault.

Abstract This paper examines the main objections that Freud’s work has faced, from the birth of psychoanalysis to this day, in order to show how they generally follow each other, without for that reason having ever achieved a true rebuttal of either the theory or the practice of psychoanalysis, and rather testify to the time’s difficulty to take on Freud’s findings. In that light it is shown how the subversion of the conceptions of sexuality, the discovery of the unconscious, and, today, the non-reduction of the real to the material on the part of psychoanalysis, constitute the basic facts around which the most widespread resistances to the Freudian work gravitate. Keywords: effectiveness, resistances, science, sexuality, unconscious.
