Preserving the House of the Saint: Religious and Secular Practices of Heritage in the Medina of Casablanca

Chiara Lutteri

The Dar Rabbi Haim Pinto is a small place of Saint veneration located in the medina of Casablanca. It is situated near a recently renovated area known as the “Triangle of Tolerance”, which comprises a synagogue, a mosque, and a church. This portion of the Old City has been heavily patrimonialized in the last decade and now encloses two museums which host Jewish objects. The Dar Rabbi Haim Pinto, located in the same area, has not attracted institutional attention. It remains a shared space of veneration and preserves religious objects in a form of insider-led practice of conservation. This article interrogates the different trajectories of religious heritage in the medina of Casablanca, highlighting how State-led projects of patrimonialization have resulted in a form of secularization of Jewish heritage. The study of Dar Rabbi Haim Pinto illustrates how rituality and faith can constitute different forms of motivation for the preservation of Jewish heritage in Casablanca and foster community resilience and transmission. The contribution is based on ethnographic and museological fieldwork within the Dar Rabbi Haim Pinto and in the surrounding urban area, coupled with semi-structured interviews with the guardian of the Dar and other members of the Jewish community of Casablanca.

Influence of Judaism on Zionism and the Power of Israeli Orthodox Jewish Political Parties

Nejc Krevs

The article outlines the importance of Judaism for the existence and development of the ideology of Zionism, which played a key role in the creation of modern state of Israel. The Jewish national movement was based on the direct relationship between nation, religion and land. Without Judaism, such a vivid political involvement of the Zionists would not have been possible. They initially developed their ideas in Europe, and in 1948, their dreams came true in the land of Zion and Jerusalem. The article also presents the political influence of religious orthodox parties in Israel. These have strong power, especially the following two parties: UTJ (United Torah Judaism) and Shas. They are both parties of Orthodox Jews from different political background, but always with desire to participate in the right wing government, which in recent years has been led by the Prime Minister and leader of party Likud, Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu. By shedding light on the influence of religious parties, the paper also indicates the wide socio-political significance of Orthodox Jews in Israel. Their number is increasing year by year, which also affects the balance of power in the 120-member parliament, the Knesset.

Images of Jews in the Tradition of Slovenian Folk Prayers »Mary’s Dreams«

Irena Avsenik Nabergoj

The article is a partial presentation of a more comprehensive study of the images of Jews in Slovenian folk prayers, which have emerged over the centuries in similar, mostly poetic forms in all Slovenian regions. It is based on the observation that the motif of the Jews as Jesus’ tormentors appears in most folk prayers based on the Gospel story of Jesus’ passion, so that in this genre of prayers we can talk about their negative stereotypes. The most characteristic and most common »passion genre« of Slovene folk songs-prayers is described as »The Golden Lord’s Prayer«. This sometimes also includes the motif of »Mary’s dreams,« that is, Mary’s dream vision of the terrible suffering that awaits her son Jesus; but some prayers of the »Mary’s Dreams« genre also consist of independent units. Since no one in previous research has noticed the extremely frequent occurrence of the stereotypical motif of the Jews as tormentors of Jesus in Slovenian folk prayers, the article breaks new ground in this area. In the search for reasons for such frequent anti-Jewish depictions in Slovenia, it relies on the broader context of anti-Judaism in Europe in the centuries from the High Middle Ages onwards. It is particularly related to similar negative stereotypical representations of Jews in the Poljanski manuscript from the turn of the 18th to the 19th century which develops a thoughtful narrative of the life of Jesus based on the Gospels, the works of some Church Fathers and a medieval mystical tradition. As a comparative analysis has shown, Poljanski manuscript, which comprises more than 700 large-format pages, is a more or less literal translation of one of the Baroque editions of the monumental meditation on the life of Jesus Das grosse Leben Christi by the German Capuchin Father Martin von Cochem (1634–1712). This meditation had more than 300 editions and was also a source of translations in Slovenia.

[POR] SERMÕES SETECENTISTAS PORTUGUESES DE AUTOS-DA-FÉ // PORTUGUESE SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY SERMONS PREATCHED AT AUTOS-DA FÉ

Paulo Drumond Braga

PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Portugal, Inquisição, sermões, autos-da-fé   --   This paper aims to study the 14 sermons preachead in portuguese autos-da-fé during the XVIIIth century and published. Their authors sought to demonstrate the truths of Christianity and the errors of Judaism, criticizing the blindness of the Jews, obstinate in their non-acceptance of Christ as the Messiah. They aimed primarily at the New Christians who allegedly judaized. They ended up functioning less as auxiliary mechanisms for the sincere conversion of new Christians and more as propaganda, justifying the existence of the Inquisition.   KEYWORDS: Portugal, Inquisition, sermons, autos-da-fé.

Andrzej Mrozek

The babylonian judaism, that has formed the babylonian gemara to the mishnah, came into contact mainly with the syriac christianity. The syriac language, which were used there belongs with mandaic and aramaic of the babylonian talmud to the same group of the eastern aramaic dialects. undoubtedly this situation has facilitated contact and exchange of ideas between jewish and local christian communities. both the jewish synagogues and the syriac churches were using the same text of tanakh, which was translated into syriac probably in the judeo-christian circles. Thus has the jewish community known the syriac text of the new testament? If so, then in which version: Diatessaron, Peshitta or Vetus Syra of the new testament? an important source of information about the relationship between jewish and christian communities are apocrypha – some developed in the common literary circles. In addition, the syriac patristic literature, on the one hand, shows the influence of judaic exegetical techniques or at least its literary motifs on the christian literature. on the other hand, it reflects the growing conflict between religions. some features of this literature could have some influence on the development of the babylonian gemara topics related to jesus, mary and christians. Thus, the syrian christianity was an eyewitness to the gradual detachment of christianity from judaism, even in the third century and the disappearance of judeo-christianity.

La pensée politique de Yeshayahou Leibowitz

Jean-Marc Joubert

Yeshayahou Leibowitz is better known as a scientist, a theologian of Judaism and a great polemicist than as a political theorist. This paper seeks to demonstrate that he has developed a systematic and original thinking on important realities such as the nation, the land and the State. His reflections on these topics led Leibowitz to a serious but limited Zionist engagement, which was not conditioned by his religious convictions.
