Outside the Palaces: About Material Culture in the Almoravid Era

The material legacy of the Almoravid dynasty is evident in a limited number of public and military works promoted by the authorities, reflecting their policies on territorial expansion and urban planning. Other aspects, such as its integration into the Mediterranean economy, its ideological spread, and the vitality of its productive sectors, are well represented through coinage, inscriptions, and sumptuary arts. However, understanding everyday material culture beyond aristocratic circles remains elusive. This paper explores the influence of the Almoravid period on al-Andalus’s material culture, identifying antecedents and impacts on later periods. We analyze artifacts from the Albalat site (Romangordo, Cáceres, Spain), contextualized in the first half of the 12th century, comparing them with contemporary and earlier examples across the Almoravid empire. Emphasis is placed on ceramics, highlighting their diverse nature with inherited traits from the Taifa period, and innovations that persisted into Almohad culture, considering the role of production centers in disseminating these models. The transition from Almoravid to Almohad is also examined through everyday items like a casket adorned with bone inlays, representing a link in Andalusian ivory handicraft evolution. This analysis aims to deepen understanding of Almoravid heritage in the Iberian Peninsula.

The effect of social and cultural background on conducting entrepreneurial activities: Comparative study of overseas returnees and local entrepreneurs in Korean arts and culture industry

Few empirical studies exist which investigate the effect of cultural identity on entrepreneurship via comparison between overseas returnees and local entrepreneurs. Hence, this study aims to explore the similarities and differences between the two groups with different social and cultural backgrounds in conducting their entrepreneurial activities. This study adopts a qualitative inductive approach and offers both theoretical and policy implications. The key findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the two groups’ developing their arts and culture start-ups with different backgrounds. Hence our contributions are twofold: we address existing theoretical gaps by underlying the thought process of a new variant of entrepreneurs succeeding in a challenging environment with different social and cultural backgrounds; and we identify the ongoing change of people with different social and cultural backgrounds during the journey of entrepreneurship.

Wystawa Wielkopolska plastyka gotycka (1936) na tle czasowych ekspozycji sztuki średniowiecznej w okresie międzywojennym

Wystawa Wielkopolska plastyka gotycka, zorganizowana w 1936 r. w Muzeum Wielkopolskim, była jednym z najważniejszych wydarzeń kulturalnych międzywojennego Poznania, dotąd nigdy niepowtórzonym w takiej skali. Odnalezione materiały archiwalne (wycinki prasowe, fotografie i dokumentacja) umożliwiają analizę samej ekspozycji oraz jej społecznego odbioru. Źródła te pozwalają również na rekonstrukcję procesu organizacyjnego oraz układu przestrzennego wystawy. Stanowią punkt wyjścia do refleksji nad nowymi perspektywami, jakie wystawa wniosła do badań nad gotycką sztuką Wielkopolski, oraz do uchwycenia jej wyróżników na tle innych prezentacji sztuki średniowiecznej w okresie międzywojennym. Przyjęta w artykule perspektywa metahistorii sztuki, koncentrująca się na paradygmacie narodowym, pozwala osadzić wystawę w szerszym, ideologicznie nacechowanym i nasyconym nacjonalistycznymi treściami dyskursie toczącym się w ramach historii sztuki w XX w.

Une émulation autour du livre photographique en France à partir des années 1980

The rise of photographic publishing in France appeared at the time of the emergence of photographer associations : the Faut Voir agency (1982-2000) and the bar Floréal collective (1985-2015), themselves producers and distributors of photographic books. This analysis allows us to understand the relationship between several uses of photography and the role of publishing, based on a few exemplary achievements.

La cultura de segregación en la videocreación orientalista: hacia la cuestión del cuerpo femenino y la geometría de poder en la obra de Shirin Neshat

La obra de Neshat, desde varias perspectivas teóricas, merece un estudio pormenorizado. Mi intención en este estudio es, a propósito de dos de sus videoinstalaciones, Zarin (2005) y Munis (2008) de la serie Mujeres sin hombres (Zanan bedun-e mardan, 2004-2009), examinar la visión de la artista al orientalismo y a las geometrías del poder. Forma parte del marco teórico de este estudio una relectura al contexto histórico del orientalismo, además de las teorías de los espacios generizados en una intersección con los estudios de la representación en las artes visuales. La pregunta principal de esta investigación es cómo la estética elegida por Neshat responde al potente imaginario orientalista, a la vez que a las coordenadas espaciales y arquitectónicas de la cultura de segregación. Se ha observado que la estética de los casos de estudio contiene un método latente de arqueología de medios, implicando desaterrar memorias y nociones del imaginario, a fin de provocar una nueva lectura y posición para el sujeto femenino que representa.

Designing and Conducting a Liberal Arts Course with Problem-Based Learning : A Case Study of ‘Great Speeches That Changed World History,’ an Open Class of S University

This paper describes a case study of ‘Great Speeches That Changed World History,’ a liberal arts course offered in the second semester of 2022 at S University. It aims to design and conduct the course as student-centered with Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The four steps of PBL, ‘meeting the problem → exploring the solution → resolving the problem → presenting and evaluating the solution’ were adapted for those of ‘planning a speech → lectures, discussions, and research → writing a speech and making PowerPoint slides → speech presentations and peer reviews.’ First, students were introduced to the problem of a ‘speech,’ which was designed as an ‘ill-structured, complex, real, and related-to-the-curriculum’ PBL problem. Then they decided on the purpose, topic, audience, and place of their speeches. The second step of exploring the solution consisted of the teacher’s lectures and the students’ subsequent discussions where they explored the topics of their mock speeches. For the third and fourth steps of PBL, students participated in a team project activity where they practiced and presented their mock speeches. Peer reviews helped students concentrate on other teams’ presentations and elicited integrative understanding and secondary learning from them. A survey on PBL’s effectiveness, conducted after 15 weeks of the course, showed that students understood the class materials better when engaging in a team project and responded positively to peer reviews. They also thought their team project helped them achieve the course objectives. In conclusion, PBL was an effective method to plan a student-centered course. Students got engaged in class actively and positively with PBL, which ultimately helped them achieve the course objectives.

Política(s) do acervo no teatro de marionetas em Portugal hoje

O artigo descreve várias modalidades de conservação e preservação do acervo das companhias de teatro de marionetas. A partir da descrição de estudos de casos que pertencem ao repertório teatral em atividade em Portugal hoje, podemos identificar traços comuns que visam valorizar quer os espólios antigos, quer contemporâneos. A marioneta antiga ou tradicional é tratada como um objeto de memória identitária, valorizado igualmente enquanto património material e imaterial, e é salvaguardada enquanto objeto cénico e museológico. Os acervos contemporâneos são marcados por uma nova perceção da marioneta enquanto objeto estético e artístico, e são expostos ou reutilizados em atividades de extensão para a comunidade.

A Case Study on the Development and Utilization of the Shared Index for the Optimization of Liberal Arts Curriculum at College

The purpose of this study is to clarify a concept of the shared index developed by University A to optimize the liberal arts curriculum in colleges. The development of the ‘shared index’ is originated from the recognition of the issue of how to apply basic liberal arts subjects of a major. A researcher embodied the concept of the shared index by referring to previous studies dealing with the problem of curriculum optimization, and then calculated the shared index of subjects organized as liberal arts curriculum in colleges. The shared index is calculated as a combination of ‘shared level’, which shows how commonly certain subjects are organized in the curriculum by various departments and divisions, and the ‘probability of students’ selection’, which indicates the probability of students taking certain courses. As a result of calculating the change in the shared index before and after reorganization of the liberal arts curriculum, the shared index of liberal arts subjects on the basic nature of a major rose by 0.07. This study presents quantitative indicators that can be taken in account, in addition to the content characteristics of courses in the liberal arts area regarding the basic nature of a major.

A Study on Factors Affecting University Students' Life Adaptation through Music Liberal Arts Education -Focused on Music Interest, Education Satisfaction, and Stress Coping Strategy-

The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence life adaptation by using music interest, education satisfaction, and stress coping strategies as major factors among university students participating in music subject-based liberal arts classes. The subjects of this study were 96 male and female university students from A University in region C in Korea. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, frequency analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using the SPSS program. As a result of multiple regression analysis, first, factors affecting university students’ adaptation to life were identified as gender difference, instructor satisfaction, and problem-solving-centered and avoidance-centered behavioral stress coping strategy factors. Music interest was not significant. Second, the study showed that the higher the instructor satisfaction was among the students, the higher was the students’ adaptation to life. Third, the study also showed that the higher the problem-solving-centered stress coping strategy was, the higher the students’ adaptation to life. It further confirmed that as the avoidance-centered behavior of students decreased, there was a significant positive effect on their level of life adaptation. Through the results of this study, we can see that we need to review and operate the music liberal arts curriculum through effective intervention and planning, and to establish differentiated liberal arts education goals using various music activities in order to improve university students’ adaptation to school life. In addition, we should conduct continuous research on music liberal arts education from multiple perspectives for effective music education class design, stress coping and alleviation, and the educational satisfaction of our students.

“Working the art world from within”

Focusing on an internationally little-known artistic scene in Paris, the essay addresses the text-based works of artists such as Lefevre Jean Claude, Philippe Cazal, Claude Rutault, and Philippe Thomas. To what extent is their turn to ambiguity and literary methods at the end of the 1970s shaped by their sociopolitical environment? In what way can it be understood as a link between first-generation institutional critique and 1990s relational practices? Can the motif of a critique “from within” be read socially in their works – as a strategy of artistic self-positioning? Offering an alternative to a reading via the lens of literature and language philosophy, the essay understands these works as network-based, as interlinked with the local and international structures of a competitive art field.

La literatura camerunesa en lengua española: una base para la adquisición de las competencias socioculturales en la enseñanza del E/LE

Resumen: Hoy en día observamos que la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera en Camerún va más allá de la adquisición de los saberes. Es en este sentido que hay oportunidad de tomar en cuenta los aspectos socioculturales en relación con el medio ambiente de los aprendices para mejor alcanzar los objetivos del programa oficial. Uno de los objetivos es formar un ciudadano arraigado en su cultura y abierto a la de los demás. En este contexto, la literatura camerunesa en lengua española puede difundir las realidades socioculturales de Camerún y constituir una base para la adquisición de las competencias socioculturales. Este artículo ofrece un análisis de los contenidos socioculturales en la producción de los autores cameruneses en español y luego propone un método didáctico para su implementación.

Through increasing differentiation of skills and globalization, it has become necessary to continually update knowledge and competences to ensure an individual’s life development and self-fulfilment. To ensure that the Republic of Moldova maintains its high standard of living and social cohesion, it is necessary to further enhance the citizens’ high level of qualification and to draw less educated people into the modern society. Responding to the rapid economic and social changes, lifelong learning aims to actively deal with the dynamics of changing the environment and to take advantage of new opportunities in the social, cultural and employment contexts. The development of the informational society and the widespread diffusion of information technologies give rise to new opportunities for learning and establish new challenges and practices regarding the way how teaching and learning should be organized and carried out.

A Comparative Study of the Foreign Students’ Perceptions Regarding Synchronous and Asynchronous Online Classes in a Liberal Arts Writing Course

This study aimed to find more effective ways to conduct online classes by comparing the foreign students’ perceptions regarding synchronous and asynchronous classes in a liberal arts writing course. While asynchronous online writing classes ran in the first semester, synchronous classes ran in the second semester of 2020 at A university. The survey of satisfaction, which included the perceptions of the foreign students, was given to students studying Korean at the intermediate and advanced levels after each semester. As a result of this survey, we learned that the difference in the style of the student’s online classes did not affect their perception of the teaching contents, nor their perception of their instructors. However, students perceived synchronous classes more positively than asynchronous classes. In particular, there was a significant difference when it came to interactions. For instance, the advanced students were more positive about the synchronous classes regarding their concentration levels, their “sense of presence,” and their overall understanding of their instructor’s feedback. However, both levels of students were positive about the asynchronous classes when it came to their management of the learning process. Through this study, we confirmed that the synchronous class is suitable for liberal arts writing courses, which implement writing practice and feedback. However, additional materials, such as prerecorded lectures, should be provided according to the students’ Korean level and other considerations.

КУЛЬТУРОЛОГІЧНИЙ ВИМІР УКРАЇНСЬКОГО МЕДІАПРОСТОРУ У ВЗАЄМОДІЇ З АМЕРИКАНСЬКОЮ МОДЕЛЛЮ НОВИННОЇ ЖУРНАЛІСТИКИ

Мета статті – визначити вплив американської новинної журналістики на сучасний стан медіапростору в Україні в культурологічному аспекті. Методологія дослідження полягає у використанні культурологічного підходу, який включає аналіз змін українського суспільства і трансформацію новинної журналістики. Репортерські методи застосовувалися для сприйняття і інтерпретації новин і новинної роботи журналіста. Аналітичний підхід допоміг виявити вплив американської моделі новинної журналістики на духовну культуру України. Метод моделювання був застосований для прогнозування майбутньої моделі української новинної журналістики в медіапросторі. Порівняльний аналіз використовувався при зіставленні американської та української моделей новинної журналістики. Наукова новизна полягає у тому, що вперше досліджено культурологічний аспект впливу американської моделі новинної журналістики на сучасний український медіапростір та спрогнозовано майбутню модель української новинної журналістики в медіапросторі. Висновки. Доведено, що з поширенням свого впливу медіакультура виходить на новий рівень у співпраці із засобами масової інформації. Масова культура і постмодерністський дискурс ЗМІ стали атрибутами й сьогоденної української культури. Входження жанру новин у нову фазу розвитку дозволяє кваліфікувати їх і як підсистему, що виступає об’єктом впливу культури суспільства, і як її суб’єкт. При цьому ЗМІ є каналом, що впливає на культурні пріоритети та зміни в менталітеті. А генезис української новинної журналістики як підсистеми культури додав їй нові якості, які мають ознаки автономізації, закритості і генералізації.

Este trabalho é um convite ao leitor para pensarmos juntos o movimento cultural hip-hop como forma de arte contemporânea e ferramenta de ensino e transformação social e os processos criativos do rap e os conceitos que envolvem suas construções, junto do seu possível deslocamento para campo da educação. É neste contexto que se apresenta o conceito que envolve o ato de Rimar-Educar-Pesquisar, articulando o rimador – aquele que cria música, realiza improvisos, versos e poemas, transmite a mensagem e também a recebe – o educador – aquele que ensina e aprende de forma conjunta, utiliza a pedagogia científica e empírica – e o pesquisador – aquele que utiliza-se de sua experiência, vai a campo, busca dar profundidade ao seu conhecimento, investiga, vasculha e coleta dados, através de leituras, entrevistas, e outras técnicas para buscar aquilo que precisa. Neste sentido se articula, através do hífen o Rimador-Educador-Pesquisador.

Laras concept and its triggers: A case study on garap of jineman Uler Kambang

<p class="IsiAbstrakIndo"><em>Laras</em> is one unresolved aesthetic concept and <em>gendhing garap</em> models as the triggers have not been identified yet either. This paper is a case study which discusses a case of <em>jineman garap Uler Kambang pélog lima,</em> the first winner of <em>Sindhèn Idol</em> contest 2012, which is considered to have the most qualified performance to meet <em>laras </em>criteria. The purpose of this research is to figure out the <em>laras</em> concept construction and identify the <em>gendhing garap</em> models as its triggers. <em>Laras</em> concept reconstruction within the aesthetic framework of Javanese <em>karawitan</em> and identification of <em>gendhing garap</em> model are discussed based on concept of <em>garap </em>in Javanese <em>karawitan</em>. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method. The results show that <em>laras</em> is a beautiful, delicate, and deep <em>karawitan</em> sense containing elements of <em>mat, lega</em>, <em>betah, adhem, ayem, tentrem, jinem, sengsem, and marem</em>. The triggering <em>gendhing garap</em> models include: <em>garap</em> of <em>leres, rempeg</em>, <em>greget-urip</em>, and <em>sarèh-sumèlèh</em>.</p>

O artigo defende que um período recente, situado ao redor da década de 1970, produziu uma descontinuidade forte na história do pensamento, inaugurando uma mudança ainda em curso. Caracteriza-se então esta mudança, em seus eixos principais. Como exemplo das possibilidades que ela inaugura, apresentam-se as implicações da sua política e da sua epistemologia para a teorização do juízo, da subjetividade e da experiência estética. Entre os temas abordados, estão o impacto sistêmico da “revolução mundial” de 1968, o aumento do interesse pelo “popular”, a quebra do cronótopo do “tempo histórico”, os conceitos de self-cause, a deslegitimação epistemológica do determinismo, as novas descrições do self (em suas implicações para a teorização da experiência estética) e as implicações da atomização democrática para o juízo estético e político.

Názory obyvatel Plzně na projekt Plzeň – Evropské hlavní město kultury 2015 rok poté

The article discusses the resident´s attitudes towards the Pilsen – European Capital of Culture 2015 project. The evaluation was made more than half a year after the end of the event. Based on the survey, whose respondents were residents of the city of Pilsen, three thematic issues were verified. They involved 1) respondents relation to culture and arts, and their possible changes due to the ECoC events in 2015, 2) the general benefits and impacts of these events and 3) the long-term legacy of the ECoC 2015 or at least of some events that the project started. Also the supply of cultural events in the city was assessed. Results clearly confirmed positive residents´ attitude towards the project. They also show benefits observed by respondents that were not seen only in the field of culture, but also in others. Most mentioned were: increased tourism, higher and better supply of culture and arts, and its greater public support. Also such benefits as changed image of the city as well as improved environment were often observed. On the other hand, most of the respondents did not believe in long term effects of the project and also their opinion was biased by their general attitude towards the culture. Overall the opinion of city residents confirms that originally identified positive view of the ECoC has not changed in time too much.

Algunas consideraciones sobre un supuesto anfiteatro ilicitano

En 1775 una campaña de excavaciones en l‘Alcúdia (Elche, Alicante) descubrió restos romanos de entidad entre los que creyeron ver «vestigios de un Amphiteatro». La noticia fue publicada en la Gazeta de Madrid en 1776 y recogida por Alejandro Ramos a mediados del siglo XX, y recientemente ha vuelto a considerarse probable la existencia de un anfiteatro ilicitano, si bien los restos entonces mencionados podrían corresponder a una estructura elipsoidal todavía visible a poniente de l‘Alcúdia y difícilmente vinculable a un edificio de espectáculos.
