Visual Insights into Agentic Optimization of Pervasive Stream Processing Services
Boris Sedlak, Víctor Casamayor Pujol, Schahram Dustdar
Processing sensory data close to the data source, often involving Edge devices, promises low latency for pervasive applications, like smart cities. This commonly involves a multitude of processing services, executed with limited resources; this setup faces three problems: first, the application demand and the resource availability fluctuate, so the service execution must scale dynamically to sustain processing requirements (e.g., latency); second, each service permits different actions to adjust its operation, so they require individual scaling policies; third, without a higher-level mediator, services would cannibalize any resources of services co-located on the same device. This demo first presents a platform for context-aware autoscaling of stream processing services that allows developers to monitor and adjust the service execution across multiple service-specific parameters. We then connect a scaling agent to these interfaces that gradually builds an understanding of the processing environment by exploring each service's action space; the agent then optimizes the service execution according to this knowledge. Participants can revisit the demo contents as video summary and introductory poster, or build a custom agent by extending the artifact repository.

Work climate and economic performance in sustainable companies
Anastasia-Cristiana Dumitru, Bucharest University of Economic Studies
This research aimed to investigate the relationship between work climate, sustainability practises and perceived
economic performance in sustainable companies, focusing on the impact of Environmental, Social, and
Governance (ESG) initiatives. The main objective is to assess how workplace climate influence economic
performance and how sustainability practices contribute to employee satisfaction. The study uses a quantitative
methodology based on a questionnaire consisting of 15 questions distributed to employees of sustainable
companies. The collected data were statistically analysed using SPSS software, with correlation and linear
regression tests to validate the hypotheses. Three main hypotheses were tested in the study: (H1) the positive
relationship between a favourable work climate and economic performance, (H2) the contribution of
sustainability practises to improving work climate, and (H3) the correlation between involvement in ESG
initiatives and employee satisfaction. The results indicate a significant correlation between a positive work
climate and perceived economic performance as well as a correlation between the implementation of ESG
initiatives and employee satisfaction. This research contributes to the understanding of how sustainability
practises can influence both employee satisfaction and overall business performance and provides guidance for
improving organisational strategies in sustainable companies.

Optional participation only provides a narrow scope for sustaining cooperation
Khadija Khatun, Chen Shen, Jun Tanimoto
et al.
Understanding how cooperation emerges in public goods games is crucial for addressing societal challenges. While optional participation can establish cooperation without identifying cooperators, it relies on specific assumptions -- that individuals abstain and receive a non-negative payoff, or that non-participants cause damage to public goods -- which limits our understanding of its broader role. We generalize this mechanism by considering non-participants' payoffs and their potential direct influence on public goods, allowing us to examine how various strategic motives for non-participation affect cooperation. Using replicator dynamics, we find that cooperation thrives only when non-participants are motivated by individualistic or prosocial values, with individualistic motivations yielding optimal cooperation. These findings are robust to mutation, which slightly enlarges the region where cooperation can be maintained through cyclic dominance among strategies. Our results suggest that while optional participation can benefit cooperation, its effectiveness is limited and highlights the limitations of bottom-up schemes in supporting public goods.
Cross-Cluster Networking to Support Extended Reality Services
Theodoros Theodoropoulos, Luis Rosa, Abderrahmane Boudi
et al.
Extented Reality (XR) refers to a class of contemporary services that are intertwined with a plethora of rather demanding Quality of Service (QoS) and functional requirements. Despite Kubernetes being the de-facto standard in terms of deploying and managing contemporary containerized microservices, it lacks adequate support for cross-cluster networking, hindering service-to-service communication across diverse cloud domains. Although there are tools that may be leveraged alongside Kubernetes in order to establish multi-cluster deployments, each one of them comes with its drawbacks and limitations. The purpose of this article is to explore the various potential technologies that may facilitate multi-cluster deployments and to propose how they may be leveraged to provide a cross-cluster connectivity solution that caters to the intricacies of XR services. The proposed solution is based on the use of two open source frameworks, namely Cluster API for multi-cluster management, and Liqo for multi-cluster interconnectivity. The efficiency of this approach is evaluated in the context of two experiments. This work is the first attempt at proposing a solution for supporting multi-cluster deployments in a manner that is aligned with the requirements of XR services

Ransomware: Analysing the Impact on Windows Active Directory Domain Services
Grant McDonald, Pavlos Papadopoulos, Nikolaos Pitropakis
et al.
Ransomware has become an increasingly popular type of malware across the past decade and continues to rise in popularity due to its high profitability. Organisations and enterprises have become prime targets for ransomware as they are more likely to succumb to ransom demands as part of operating expenses to counter the cost incurred from downtime. Despite the prevalence of ransomware as a threat towards organisations, there is very little information outlining how ransomware affects Windows Server environments, and particularly its proprietary domain services such as Active Directory. Hence, we aim to increase the cyber situational awareness of organisations and corporations that utilise these environments. Dynamic analysis was performed using three ransomware variants to uncover how crypto-ransomware affects Windows Server-specific services and processes. Our work outlines the practical investigation undertaken as WannaCry, TeslaCrypt, and Jigsaw were acquired and tested against several domain services. The findings showed that none of the three variants stopped the processes and decidedly left all domain services untouched. However, although the services remained operational, they became uniquely dysfunctional as ransomware encrypted the files pertaining to those services
A Framework for Web Services Retrieval Using Bio Inspired Clustering
Anirudha Rayasam, Siddhartha R Thota, Avinash N Bukkittu
et al.
Efficiently discovering relevant Web services with respect to a specific user query has become a growing challenge owing to the incredible growth in the field of web technologies. In previous works, different clustering models have been used to address these issues. But, most of the traditional clustering techniques are computationally intensive and fail to address all the problems involved. Also, the current standards fail to incorporate the semantic relatedness of Web services during clustering and retrieval resulting in decreased performance. In this paper, we propose a framework for web services retrieval that uses a bottom-up, decentralized and self organising approach to cluster available services. It also provides online, dynamic computation of clusters thus overcoming the drawbacks of traditional clustering methods. We also use the semantic similarity between Web services for the clustering process to enhance the precision and lower the recall.
Partially Trusting the Service Mesh Control Plane
Constantin Adam, Abdulhamid Adebayo, Hubertus Franke
et al.
Zero Trust is a novel cybersecurity model that focuses on continually evaluating trust to prevent the initiation and horizontal spreading of attacks. A cloud-native Service Mesh is an example of Zero Trust Architecture that can filter out external threats. However, the Service Mesh does not shield the Application Owner from internal threats, such as a rogue administrator of the cluster where their application is deployed. In this work, we are enhancing the Service Mesh to allow the definition and reinforcement of a Verifiable Configuration that is defined and signed off by the Application Owner. Backed by automated digital signing solutions and confidential computing technologies, the Verifiable Configuration allows changing the trust model of the Service Mesh, from the data plane fully trusting the control plane to partially trusting it. This lets the application benefit from all the functions provided by the Service Mesh (resource discovery, traffic management, mutual authentication, access control, observability), while ensuring that the Cluster Administrator cannot change the state of the application in a way that was not intended by the Application Owner.
NCAA Exit Interviews and Surveys: Academic Experiences of College Athletes
Molly Harry
Institutions are required to conduct exit interviews and surveys (EIS) with departing athletes, however, these instruments are currently an untapped data source for further understanding the college athlete experience. This study examined 17 FBS institutions’ exit interviews and surveys with 528 athletes, focusing on athletes’ academic experiences. Analyses revealed that EIS questions pertaining to educational experiences focused on the following areas: academic services, overall academic experiences, time demands, coach support of academics, and faculty support. Athletes in this sample expressed overall positive academic experiences and gratitude for the academic services provided. Additionally, the majority of athletes noted few issues with time demands, strong coach support for their academic progress, and positive faculty interactions. These findings challenge some of the current literature noting negative educational experiences and opportunities for college athletes. Implications and recommendations for the field are discussed.

Myles Brand’s Collegiate Model and the Post-Amateurism World of College Sports
Welch Suggs, Jennifer Lee Hoffman
One of Myles Brand’s key contributions as president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association was the development of what he called the “theoretical model of college sports.” In this paper, we present the theoretical antecedents of the collegiate model in the histories of both sport and higher education. We go on to articulate the definition of the collegiate model of sport as Brand presented it iteratively in public comments. Finally, we situate the relevance of the collegiate model as a policy prescription in twenty-first century college sports.

Factors Influencing Conative Loyalty in Anthropology Museum Tourism
Jing Jing Zheng , Hua wen Shen , Ka Yin Chau
et al.
Although the concepts of loyalty, service quality and customer satisfaction have frequently been discussed by scholars, their connections with emotional factors have rarely been investigated in the field of museum tourism. The Anthropology Museum of Guangxi focuses on unique ethnic minorities, which is used as a case study in this paper. The key question is whether visitors are driven by certain emotional factors. This paper examines the relationships among the factors that influence visitors’ emotional attachment, satisfaction, conative loyalty and perceived quality. Structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is used to model the relations among these four constructs, which include formative and reflective constructs. The structural model was tested on a sample of 184 visitors to the Anthropology Museum of Guangxi, and empirical study of the conceptual model supports all of the paper’s hypotheses. The results show positive influences among emotional attachment, visitor satisfaction and perceived quality, which may indeed affect visitors’ conative loyalty to a specific museum. The practical applications are suggested based on the finding that emotional attachment plays an important role in predicting visitor loyalty.

Scheduling Optimization of Heterogeneous Services by Resolving Conflicts
Sotiris Skaperas, Nasim Ferdosian, Arsenia Chorti
et al.
Fifth generation (5G) new radio introduced flexible numerology to provide the necessary flexibility for accommodating heterogeneous services. However, optimizing the scheduling of heterogeneous services with differing delay and throughput requirements over 5G new radio is a challenging task. In this paper, we investigate near optimal, low complexity scheduling of radio resources for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) when coexisting with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services. We demonstrate that maximizing the sum throughput of eMBB services while servicing URLLC users, is, in the long-term, equivalent to minimizing the number of URLLC placements in the time-frequency grid; this result stems from reducing the number of infeasible placements for eMBB, to which we refer to as "conflicts". To meet this new objective, we propose and investigate new conflict-aware heuristics; a family of "greedy" and a lightweight heuristic inspired by bin packing optimization, all of near optimal performance. Moreover, having shed light on the impact of conflict in layer-2 scheduling, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) emerges as a competitive approach for conflict resolution, in addition to the well established increased spectral efficiency with respect to OMA. The superior performance of NOMA, thanks to alleviating conflicts,is showcased by extensive numerical results.

Rio de Janeiro residents’ perceptions of the 2016 Olympics in the pre-games period
Deborah Moraes Zouain, Paola Lohmann, Kaarina Virkki
et al.
Between 2014 and 2016, Rio de Janeiro hosted two mega sport events
– the Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cup and
the Olympic Games – which generated changes in the city. This study
sought to analyse Rio residents’ perceptions in the lead-up to the latter
games. A quantitative survey was conducted face-to-face with a sample
of 404 residents, exactly one year before the Olympics. The data
indicated that the residents found the pre-game period troubling
because of uncertainties regarding the city’s desired Olympic legacy.
Residents’ routines were impacted by either traffic issues or media
reports that generated expectations and apprehension. The preOlympic period was marked by protests, concerns about overspending,
construction delays and fears about the mega-events’ success.
However, residents’ perceptions included clear expectations regarding
the event legacy’s implications for tourism businesses and the
destination’s visibility, as well as lasting improvements affecting
tourism and sport activities
